  • Why are the subtitles doubled on iTunes movie purchases?

I just bought The Avengers and we've noticed the subtitles (for the parts where people are speaking another language) are doubled on top of each other. It looks like they are part of the movie (as expected) and it looks like the AppleTV is putting them on top of that in a shaded bar across the bottom. I've double checked my settings and Subtitles are turned off, so I wouldn't expect to see them. How do I turn this off?

Summary: Basically whomever put this movie package together screwed up and you can't do anything about it.
    Detailed:
There are 3 typical ways to show subtitles.
    1. Embedded/Overlay text on the video track
    2. Forced subtitle track
    3. Regular subtitle track
Normally they would use either method 1 or 2 but it is wrong to do both.  However, it is a Catch-22 problem.
    - If only method 1 is used, the subtitles are always shown even if you didn't enable subtitles or your video player doesn't support subtitle tracks.  (However, they might not be in your language)
    - If only method 2 is used, and your video player didn't support subtitles then you wouldn't get any subtitles.  If it does support them, which the AppleTV does, then it will always show them regardless of your "Subtitles Enabled/Disabled" setting.
It seems that this movie uses both methods 1 and 2 which is why you see duplicated subtitles.
Method 3 is the track you can control from the Subtitles menu.  If you enable the subtitles, it will show them for all the speaking parts, not just the Russian in this scene.
I hope this help you to understand what is going on but unfortunately there isn't a [legal] way to fix this.

  • Itunes: Movies, TV shows, will Apple be legally required to add subtitles?

Subject says it all. Obama recently signed a Technology Access Bill For Disabled. As an individual with a lifelong severe hearing loss, here's hoping that this will finally force Apple into supporting the deaf community through supplying subtitles with all their movie and TV purchases/rentals.

    Any thoughts?

Chris - all the material supplied by contents providers nearly always do have subtitles already from TV and DVD broadcasts.
That these content providers are unable to supply this from iTunes 99% of the time, suggests that Apple's own system is the blocking point and they need to address this pretty soon or lose their market position.
There are nearly 5 million hits on Google about Apple's failure to provide this so the demand is clearly there. I hope they dont ignore it.

  • Toshiba TL938 fails to show greek subtitles playing movies from USB

    Hello,
the Toshiba media player does play well the videos that are in the usb, but fails to show properly the
    greek subtitles.
Although they are loaded, they characters are shown wrong.
I tried to convert the srt file to UTF-8 but it made no difference.
Any suggestions of what i could still try /

    *Problem solved.*
It seems that selecting only UTF-8 on notepad ++ was not enough.
I had to choose the character set but also to choose the option to convert it to UTF-8.
Finally subtitles work without a problem.

  • Where is the subtitle option in iTunes 12.0.1

Where is subtitle option in iTunes 12.0.1?

    Hi Swaroop11,
Happy New Year!  Below is the section of the iTunes Online Help manual that explains how to access the subtitle options in iTunes 12.  Click on the link for complete details.
Play movies, TV shows, and other video - iTunes Help
    http://help.apple.com/itunes/mac/12/#/itns3118
    Play a video
Start playing a video: Double-click it.
Control video playback: Move the pointer anywhere over the playback window to make the controls (Play/Pause, Volume, and so on) appear.
Use subtitles and alternative audio tracks
Some videos feature subtitles, closed captioning, and alternative audio tracks (for example, tracks in other languages).
To change audio and subtitle settings while a movie is playing, do either of the following:
Choose Controls > Audio & Subtitles > [option].
Move the pointer over the movie until the controls appear, click the Subtitles button , and choose an option.
Videos purchased from the iTunes Store can be viewed only in iTunes and QuickTime Player.
This information for iTunes 11 is very simlar for iTunes 12:
iTunes for Windows: Closed Captioning and Subtitles - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-is/HT202795
Captions and subtitles are available from the Subtitles menu, if the video you're watching includes them. Click the Subtitles button  to view the subtitle options available for your video. If captions or subtitles are available, this button appears in the navigation controls when you move your pointer over the video.
    Setting captioning preferences
To use captions or subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing:
    Click the iTunes menu button.
    Choose Preferences > Playback.
Select "Prefer Closed Captions and SDH."
    Customizing captions and subtitles
To customize the way iTunes displays your captions or subtitles:
    Click the iTunes menu button.
Choose Preferences > Playback > Caption Style.
Select one of the predefined styles, or create your own style by clicking New. You can change the font, size, and color of the text, along with the color and opacity of the background. A preview of your new style displays at the top of the window.
When you're happy with your selections, click OK to save them. iTunes then uses this style as the default style for captions and subtitles for iTunes video playback.

  • Closed Caption Features for iTune Movie Downloads?

While I was glad to see that Apple plans to offer a movie download service with the iTunes Store, I'm still inclined to NOT use the service if there's no assurance that closed captioned/subtitled movies will be available as well.
Will iTunes Movie downloads include captioned media?
Today's DVDs all have features enabling us to turn on captions/subtitles and it's already a shame that Netflix, according to a representative's comment made nearly two years ago, will not provide captioned movies "until the near future"...
I hope Apple takes its hearing-impaired (deaf and hard of hearing) customer base into consideration...and it IS a sizeable customer base.

The question on the minds of the millions of deaf and hard of hearing people is whether Apple will make or enable captioning for their downloadable movies. I blogged about this a few weeks ago at HearingExchange online here: http://www.hearingexchange.com/blogs/?p=93 Apple didn't consider people with hearing loss when they made their iPhone non-compatible with hearing aids and cochlear implant processors. For a technology company, they aren't keeping up with accessibility trends. This is both disheartening and disappointing for people who struggle to participate socially and professionally on a daily basis with the world at large.

how can I get an itunes movie from macbook to apple tv via airplay?

You don't use Airplay.  You set up Home Sharing on both and under the Computers section of AppleTV you'll then find it under Movies (or Rentals if rented), assuming it's in a compatible format.

  • How can i use Ipad's ITunes movies with Samsung 52 inch LED HDTV LN52B750U1F

Hi there and happy holidays!  I have a LN52B750U1F 52 inch TV and for the first time ever want to play iTunes movies from my iPad on the TV.  I tried reading the manual but it is all gibberish to me - I am a tech idiot.  I plugged the USB into both of the USB ports on the TV from the iPad and the TV recognized the iPad and the pictures, but had No Contect for movies / video.  What am I doing wrong?  Thanks!

You can not connect to the USB port on the TV. You need to purchase an AV cable or use a WiFi network and Apple TV to stream the content using AirPlay.
    Here's the HDMI adapter http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD098ZM/A/apple-digital-av-adapter?fnode=3a

How can I put my recently purchased iTunes movies onto my thumb drive and WD my passport external hard drive. My Mac is saying that can't be copied because it is too large for volumes format

[file] is too large for the volumes format
That is usually an indication that the Volume was never Erased or Partitioned for GUID partition table and Mac OS, and is still in a Windows format.
Mac OS X Extended (journaled) has no such file-size limitations
