Green LED under left speaker grille

Hello,
I noticed there is a tiny green LED that is visible under the left speaker grille on my MacBook Pro 17".
It is not visible from directly above, but is quite visible from normal typing position in an office.
The light shines from a single hole in the left speaker grille (the array of perforation holes from which the sound comes) next to the keyboard.
The hole is in row 4 from the front (front means the part of the Mac closest to me when typing) and column 15 from the right. I am average height and it comes into view and disappears if I move my head forward toward the Mac and back within a range of 10cm.
It is not the caps lock light, rather it is a very tiny bright green LED. It isn't ugly, though it does distract my eye.
Perhaps it is a RAM logic related light, or something related to the microphone, the ambient light sensor. What is it, and can it be turned on and off?

Hi Matt, I read your post some time back and wondered myself. I have seen the light after I took the top cover off for other reasons. Last night it dawned on me what it was. There are two, one is on the other side under the right grill. They are optical sensors that control the back lighting for the keyboard. During the day, put your hands over the two grills. The screen will darken and the keyboards back lighting will come on.
Hope this ends the mystery.
Cheers,
Glynn

  • How can I clean stuff that got under the speaker grille?detergent particles

Well I spilled some laundry detergent near the Macbook Pro, and some of the particles got under the speaker grille. It's mainly a cosmetic problem because everything still works perfectly fine, but I was just wondering if anyone have any suggestions on how I can get all the detergent particles out from under the speaker grille... I tried vaccumming them out, but no luck.
    -Thanks

    Welcome to Apple discussions!
No ideas, but I would be concerned about it. You might want to read the ingredients list on the detergent box and see what they are. Detergents can contain a variety of caustic chemicals like sodium carbonate. It's humid in Sugarland and the humidity could get to those fine grains and stick them to the I/O board and whatever else is in there. Over time, no telling what it might do to the traces. So there could be trouble on down the road. You might want to consider having the computer opened up and the particles removed by a professional, particularly if you are under warranty. Apple doesn't cover accidental damage, but possibly your homeowner's policy might.
    Good luck!

  • Left speaker grille slightly raised..

I tried searching for anything related to this, but as many keywords that I've tried, nothing really matched up.
I got my Macbook Pro in August. I want to say around September-October is when I noticed that the left side speaker grille (just above where headphones can be plugged in) was slightly raised up in the middle. If I try to push it down, it gradually comes right back up. Nothing else on that side is raised, just about an inch in the middle. I do not recall doing any sort of activity that would possibly make this side raise like this, since I keep it on my desk. It's not like I can see the inside of my computer, so it's not like it's this outrageous opening where particles could get inside. It's just sort of there, and I'm kind of getting annoyed/worried with it.
Any help or advice with this? I could post a picture in the next couple of hours if anyone needs a visual.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
If you got your MBP in August, then it should still be under warranty. I would call Apple or take it in to an Apple Store and ask about this. The problem with a bulge is that it could press on your display when you close the computer and possibly cause damage. This makes it more than just a cosmetic problem.
I have read various problems with warping, although nothing quite like this. But it shouldn't be doing it at all. I would consider it some sort of a flaw in the manufacturing process that should be fixed under warranty.
There is a screw on the side of my MBP in the vicinity of the headphone jack that engages a tab on the upper case. It may be that for whatever reason, the screw on yours is not engaging the tab and therefore allowing the grill to bulge up. But Apple would have to look at it and see what's wrong.
    Good luck!

  • I am getting resound from left speaker, what to do

i am getting resound from left speaker, what to do

Omnidirectional michrophone is placed under the left speaker grill in MBP.
That may be the reason why you are getting the echo.
    Using an headphone may help.

  • Apple TV green LED flashes rapidly

According to the ATV setup guide if the front green LED is flashing rapidly, there is a problem.  I've detached all the cables from the ATV and found a micro-USB cable, which I connected to the ATV and my Mac.  In iTunes in the left pane where the playlists and other options are located, only my iPad shows up as a device.  Going to Prefs there is no tab for ATV.  Under the Devices tab only the iPad shows up.
Other commets here have suggested restoring but it seems that since my Mac doesn't even "see" the ATV, there's nothing to restore to or from.
The USB cable works on my camera but it took a little elbow grease to get it inserted completely.
This is a Gen 2 ATV, two or so years old.  Connected to a late 2012 Mac Mini running OSX 10.9.1, with iTunes version 11.1.3 (64 bit).
Is there anything further that I can look into before committing it to a repair shop or buying a new one?
    thanks,
    -Tod

        •    Check that you have correctly followed the instructions for your model of Apple TV.
        •    If not already, try using a powered USB port.
        •    Repeat the process but this time try connecting the cable while iTunes is closed.
        •    Repeat the process with another cable.
        •    Try restoring the Apple TV on another computer in another location.

  • My S750 has died (pulsing green LED). Any recommended replacements?

Yup.... just like countless others.... my horribly designed S750 has died the same way so many others have; no power... pulsing green LED. Tech support told me that they do not repair them and they do not sell them any more. A call to the Creative sales department confirms. So even though I could get a replacement at Newegg.... these things clearly are lemons.... and I'll never buy Creative again. That being said.... any replacement 7.1 systems out there? I would like to keep my speaker setup (my two rears are ceiling mounted) and just replace the amp and the sub. I assume that I could get a non-computer 7.1 amp and sub and make it work? Any info GREATLY appreciated.... Wazoo

Fair enough.... but do please understand the frustration of a customer base that feels it has been left high and dry with a $500 lemon on their hands. However, no harm, no foul. Anyways.. back on topic. As I'm trying to salvage my seven S750 speakers which are mounted to my ceiling and walls, I'm looking for an audio receiver that will take 7.1 analog audio inputs from my (yes... its true..) Creative Audigy 2 ZS sound card. I found the Yamaha RX-V66 on Amazon for $366 which, from reading the manual, takes 7.1 analog inputs. Anyone have any experience with this or similar products? In addition, I would prefer to use my existing wiring as pulling that up would be a real pain. Problem, of course, is that the wire connected to my speakers terminate with a mini-plug as it is the cabling which came with the S750. Home Theatre receivers, such as the RX-V66, have two-wire speaker posts for speaker output. Anyone ever see any miniplug to speaker wire adapters out there.... or will I just have to bite the bullet and re-wire?Thanks in advance for any input.....Message Edited by wazooda on 06-25-2007 10:10 PM

  • Z1 ASF Scuff and Speaker Grill

Hello, I have had my z1 for awhile now and a few days ago I put it in my pocket and it received a large scuff, id say 90% of the screen is affected. I think it's poor build quality I can see why they left it off the Z2.
I know it will require a new digitizer, and was wondering how expensive it will be to get fixed? As if it's too much I may as well pay for an early upgrade. Also the speaker grill fell off I'm assuming it's under warranty, as the adhesive is appalling. It fell off by using the phone in water, which is a massive design flaw. I can state that even with it falling off, my device is still waterproof and sees water on a daily basis.

  • My left speaker is no longer working after update

I just got my iphone5s, the speakers both worked before I updated the phone now the left speaker does not work. How do I fix this?

Your iPhone only has one speaker. It's to the right of the lightning port. The grill on the left covers a microphone.

  • When I plug my iPod into speakers or earphones, the left speaker or earphone doesn't work

When I plug it into speakers, the left speaker doesn't play anything at all. When I plug it into my earphones, the left earphone plays really low music, static, and REALLY loud bass. My speakers and earphones both work fine with other devices. Any advice?

    - Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so. There is a little switch in the headphone jack that disconnects the speaker when the headphone jack is inserted.
Try the following to rule out a software problem
    - Check also Settings > General > Accessibility > Hearing. Make sure that the sound balance is not set all the way to "R".
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Seems you have a bad headphone jack.

If not under warranty Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one for this price. They do not fix yours.

  • Sound only plays in Front left speak on Windows 7 with Xfi Extreme Music??

I have Xfi Extreme Music (SB0640). In installed the lastes drivers for windows 7 (<a rel="nofollow" href="http://forums.creative.com/t5/forums/postpage/board-id/#]Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi series driver 2.8.003 [/url]), When I run a speaker test all 6 speakers work, however when I use media player, media center etc. Only the front left speaker works.
Do I need to install creative Alchemy?
Console Launchers does not load on boot
    Any asistance will be appreciated
    Thanks in advance

NRe: Sound only plays in Front left speak on Windows 7 with Xfi Extreme Music? You will need to have the Creative Console Launcher which will let you have CMSS-3d or Creative Multichannel Surround Sound. You can find the newest version for your card here......

Honestly though, dont bother with just that. Get Daniel K.'s X-FI support pack which is updated with the newest drivers and applications for your card. Plus, he tweaked those with fixes for installation/integration? under operating systems other than XP.
    That can be found here.......

And the link is still good.

  • New 27" i7, left speaker blown, any ideas?

    Hi Everyone,
This is my first post, but I'm a longtime lurker
I fretted and worried over the arrival of my beautiful new 27" iMac, hoping it wouldn't suffer any of the issues I've been reading about on the forums. I breathed a sigh of relief when it came last Tuesday (2 days early) with perfect glass, perfect pixels, quiet hard drive, etc. I loaded all of my software from scratch, brought over all of my files, started up Final Cut and was ready to go.
Then I noticed wacky audio. It seems something is wrong with my left speaker. Even the slightest amount of bass makes the speaker put out horrible "vibrating and rattling" noises, sounds like the speaker is blown. Sounds bad across all programs (not isolated to Final Cut) but headphones sound fine. Opened up System Preferences and moved the balance all the way to the right, everything sounds perfect, but if I move the balance to the left it is very very noticeable.
I looked around on the message boards, found someone with an older iMac with the same problem, someone had suggested trashing audio preferences and zapping the PRAM, I did both of those. No luck.
I have an appointment tomorrow morning at the Genius Bar, we'll see what they say. I want them to fix +this machine+, not give me a new or refurb. Two months ago I took my 18 month old 17" MacBook Pro in to replace the graphics card (under warranty) and they ended up giving me a refurb (though they said previously they wouldn't). I had had a dead pixel and a small scratch on the top of the case and suddenly both of those items had disappeared! So that was happy for me in the end.
So, does anyone out there have any advice to give me before I lug my iMac to the Apple Store tomorrow morning? Are they likely to want to give me a new unit or fix this one? Any magic words I should say to the Genius (besides please)? Anyone else out there have any experience with this same problem?
Any thoughts, ideas or moral support would be appreciated! Thanks!

The guy at the Genius Bar was pretty quick to agree with me that the speaker was blown. I was a little worried because the Apple Store was quite loud, I wasn't sure if he would be able to hear the speaker noise (he said he would take the iMac to the back if necessary).
I knew the "bad sound" only happened when you played music or sound with a little bit of bass, so I planned ahead and created a "Bad Speaker Mix" in iTunes in preparation for my appointment. I pulled about 8 songs that sound particularly horrible on the speaker. The first thing the tech guy did was open up iTunes and start playing random songs, but he wasn't replicating the noise. Then I pointed out the Bad Speaker Mix and that did the trick.
The Genius said that if this was an "in-stock" build, they would just give me a new machine. But, I have a i7 (and a 2 TB drive) so the only option is to have my machine repaired. They didn't have the part in stock, it needed to be ordered. I was allowed to take my computer home, they'll call me when the part has arrived (should be here today or tomorrow). He said the repair will be done in-store and should take a couple of days. He also mentioned that they repair computers 7 days a week, so there's no slow-down in the repair system.
Overall, I was very pleased with the whole experience. The appointment took about 10 minutes, everyone was extremely friendly and explained the repair process quite well. In the end it sounds like I'll only be without my computer for a few days (I was happy to hear they do small repairs like this in the store, less chance of shipping accidents and quicker turnaround time)
Big Ben, it sounds like your speaker problem is a bit different than mine, are you able to replicate it easily? Just keep in mind that these Genius Bar appointments are fast, so planning ahead helps you out!
I'll post again once my computer is all fixed up, good luck Big Ben!

  • Inspire T7700 7.1 + Audigy 2 ZS - NO SOUND IN REAR LEFT SPEAKER

can u help me please? after a new position of my speakers my rear left speaker didn`t work.i try all
i try 2 change this speaker in other position(center, left, right...) all fine ,but when i put in rear left this and other speakers don`t work((((((( what can i do??
    win xp sp 2

Unplug the minijack connectors (orange, green, black, and gray/white) from the subwoofer's amp. Leave them connected to the soundcard. Plug the green connector into the minijact port that's meant for the rear speakers. This should make the sound meant for the front come from the rear instead.
Now play some music or run some tests. Does the Rear Left speaker work? If so, then it's a software problem. You would just have to wait for an update or you could try uninstalling the drivers (run CTZAPZZ.exe on the driver CD; in Drivers directory) and reinstalling them and the updates.
If it still does not work, then it sounds like a problem with the amplifier in the subwoofer. In this case, you'd have to return the speakers for repair.

  • Left speaker loud...right speaker very low or not working?

I noticed this because when I hold the iphone I always cover the left speaker and can barely hear whatever is playing be it a song or phone call. I was wondering if this is something I should go into get repaired or if everyone is experiencing this with the iphone?
I cover the left speaker and barely hear anything at all. I cover the right speaker and the left speaker is fairly loud. I'm thinking my right speaker is just not working...too bad I thought I was in the clear sigh everything else is working fine.

Simply because the right grill is a mic, and the left one a speaker, doesn't make the mic grill soundproof to what's audible from the speaker. If sound leaks out of the right grill then that might simply be audio leaking from the playback of the speaker.
But to say it's not true? It says so clearly in the Apple User's Guide, in the keynote Steve himself made to introduce it, and the support videos all over the Apple website.
Call Apple and look into the issue.

  • My Z10 no longer shows green led (battery full) when charging

    Hi Buddy
I'm just bought and using brand new blackberry Z10 for a month. Everything works fine, I do love the OS, way more better than my old dakota. Especially since I update 10.2.1 now I'm able to install all android application
The problem is, three days lately, I'm no longer see the green led (battery full) even I charge my Z10 a whole night (8 hours). Have try to use another charger, calibrate the battery, do factory reset, etc. But still can't fixed the problem
I know some of you might think its not important, just forget about the green led as long as your battery can long last. But I'm kind of person who always put attention even for small things. And these led problem have ruined my days
    Anyone can help?

I have never seen a green led, the lastest software shows the percentage of the charge under the battery icon, each morning mine shows 100%.

  • Left speaker on macbook pro retina buzzing!?

A slight buzzing sound can be heard from the left speaker on low frequency sounds, its not that loud but is noticable and quite annoying.
Macbook is still under warranty, is it worth taking it into the store or is this not a problem they would consider for repair or for replacement?

Take it in for replacement.  In time, the annoyance will become intolerable.
    Ciao.
