Green Screen and Blue Screen Backdrops!!!

Hi,
I am looking at doing some portrait photography. However, the client wants me to change the backgrounds for almost all of the pictures.
I know the lengthy process using photoshop.
I am wondering if anyone knows of a quicker software which will process the images and remove the backgrounds for me?
Also is there a specific type of backdrop colour I'll need?
Many thanks.

> Linda,
> Some of them I can knock out, pun intended, in less than an hour, but some can take 4-5, hence the average. If it's a whole person to knock out, I will often draw a path around everything but leave the hair and any out of focus areas loose. The path will serve as the selection to knock out most of the person. From there I'll make a copy of the file and crop it to just the head or even just the frizzy part of the hair and then run KnockOut, which lets me save out a .psd grayscale mask, which I then load into the original document, align it with the proper layer and use it as the basis for the selection in a Layer Mask. The KnockOut selection is almost never perfect, but it is always better around frizzy out of focus hair than any method built into Photoshop. After loading the selection into the layer mask, I make a copy of that layer, apply the layer mask and then run Photoshop's Matting filter at the bottom of the Layer menu. It's usually Matting>Remove White Matte. That sometimes needs to be backed off somewhat, depending on the color of the hair and what background it's ultimately going against. Of course, it's one thing to lay out all the steps here and another to make it all happen at billboard size.
> My sympathies are with you regarding billable time. Hopefully you can make it up later one on something that takes you less time than you thought. If you come across an image that is giving you trouble, feel free to call me. If I have time, you can upload a file and I'll take a crack at it.
Peter,
Thanks very much for the offer. Great to know if I find myself going in circles over the same problem again. The same photographer is now in Peru and plans to do another exhibit when he gets back. He usually calls me as a last resort due to trying to keep his cost down.
I also appreciate you elaborating on your methods. I work in a similar way as far as starting with a clipping path around all the main areas, then make a larger selection around the hair. I haven't try using defringe though. Nor have I tried Corel's Knockout.
I've experimented every-which-way with MaskPro, Extract, and various channel experiments, all not to my satisfaction though. On the last project I resorted to painting in hair with a small brush, even a custom brush I tried to come up with that mimicked hair around the edges, and also the clone tool.
The next time I do this I thought I might try to develop a better method for painting or brushing hair back in to where it has the appearance of a natural edge.
Again, it is encouraging to know that even someone as talented as yourself, and others here, still struggle with masking hair. I seem to remember a few years back, either Phil or Ashley had a thread going about this topic. I believe the image was a model with long blond hair that was being blown by a fan. The final image was amazing and stuck in my mind as being one of the best masking jobs I had seen.

  • Can Motion 5 replace a green screen and blue screen in the same shot?

Can Motion 5 replace a green screen and blue screen in the same shot? I would like to replace a green screen with one image, and a blue screen with another.

Fox gives a good example for keying green & blue (or any other color)  from the same shot. I'd suggest doing a few things to get better accuracy.
First, the motion keyer always removes the color it detects the most of by default (blue/green). You can override this by setting the Strength parameter to zero, then use the Color sample tool to select the color you want. The advantage is motion will do a good job of targeting only the hue (color) that you want to remove and set an appropriate starting softness.  It also will remove spill based on this color.  Looking at Fox's example movie and the shot, I'd approach the same shot this way:
    Remove the Blue
    1. Apply the keyer and set the strength to zero.
    2. Use the Sample Color tool and select the blue (or other color) to be removed.
    3. Decrease the spill level (if needed). In Fox's example the spill from the blue glasses is going to be minimal, especially compared to the green screen, your shot may need different adjustments. Only de-spilling what you need to will give you more accurate color right away and minimize additional color correction that might be needed later.
    4. Use the Color selection tools (Chroma wheel/Luma bar) to fine tune.  Ideally you want a minimal tolerance, the inner selection, with a nice fall off, the outer selection. Try with the Scrub boxes setting first, then switch to manual if you need more control. Again see Fox's example.
    Remove Green
It's the same as the blue, you could apply the keyed to the same clip or a parent group, at this point it's many user preference.
With these techniques you can remove any color from a shot or create a mask based on a color. BTW, as you are learning to use the keyer I'd highly recommend  having the Color Selection open so you can see the graphs.  These give you real time feedback as you make selections and changes with the Strength, Refine and Color selection tools.  Watch what happens as you make selection or changes, sometimes the problem area is actually in the brightness not the color, or the softness may change  more than the tolerance selection.  Observing what is happening in these graphs will help you figure out wha to change and speed things up.

  • Blue/Green Screen And Multiple Cameras?

Next week a number of us are demonstrating Blue/Green Screen filming and editing to members of our video club who are not familiar with the technique.
Originally the person who thought up the idea intended to have 3 groups of people filming a 2 minute script on a "station platform" a la "Brief Encounter".
So far, so good, but then the creator of the idea suggested we should shoot each scene with 2 or 3 cameras to make it look more professional.
I don't like complications when the aim is to demonstrate a technique, but somebody has suggested there will be a further drawback.
When we cut from one camera to another during editing, the angle of the "actors" will alter but the background will not!
This will create the equivalent of a jump-cut.
Has anyone done such a shoot, experienced this problem or found a (reasonably simple) solution?
My idea of a solution is to have one camera in a fixed position! But, then, I am lazy.

    Hi Ian
You know me and my speculations (what You got without enough Know-How)
But I would try to first apply Green-screen effect to one Camera angle
at a time. Then I can get another background for Camera two etc.
Then save these as QT full quality .mov (or rather back to Camera and new tape
feel much safer this way) and re-import then and now prepare
for multi angle cutting. (By putting one Camera on each track. Minimizing size
to 25% and locate each to one separate corner)
Now playback and I will in Canvas see all Cameras in each corner and can by using
transparicy adjuts which one to be seen.
Then as a last action - upscale all to 100%
    Done
But as You see this is me just speculating. I fell for FC-Pro and the MultiCam
    function here. It's fantastic.

  • Creating green screen , blue screen and

    Hi,
I am new to shake , I tried to read the manual as well as the Shake Training book but i just ended up in vain..
all i want is to make a blue and green screen.
    also ..
"to make a person in LA look like walking in New York "
    please help me , thanks!!!!
    imac
    imac

Hmm. Did you get through Apple's tutorials (you mentioned "tried to read..")? The tutorials that come with Shake are very good, at least for me.
Also, I'm not sure I understand what you're trying to do. Are you keying existing footage? Or, are you trying to shoot your own green/blue screen shot with an actor, and then composite over a background shot of NYC?
Basically need those two elements: your well-lit actor against a well-lit green or blue screen (go with green if you're shooting DV), and background footage or an image of NY. Then key your footage and composite in Shake. If your camera is not locked down, that's a whole different thing that I won't get into with you now (so, make sure your camera is locked down on a tripod and not moving, to make things easier).
But for starters you should grab a book on the basics of compositing. Wish I had something to recommend, but again, the Apple tutorials and the Shake book should be enough to get you going in the right direction. Spend some time on the tutorials, commit to them, and you'll be fine.
    Hope this helps-

  • Screen covered with green and blue pixels (visible on dark colors)

    Hello,
I have this tablet since beginning of April, and since few days I've noticed the little dots on the top of the screen.
From far away it looks like dust behind the screen, but by having a closer look, it's like pixels that stay green and blue when the rest of the image is dark. It's very visible when I'm using the tablet with no lights around me. i've tried to restart the tablet, and even when It's loading with the SONY sign, I have that! what should I do ? Did people had that issue before ?
(BTW, The screen is also unresponsive when plugged to charge)

I encounter the same problem. I bought my Z2 tablet 16GB from the Singapore Sony Store. I got it for one month and the same pixel problem appeared.   I send it in for servicing at the Singapore Sony care centre at 313 somerset outlet.. One week went by and nothing happened. The service was bad, no reply from the customer care or technician. They gave me a website so i can check the status of the servicing but all it shown on the page was pending.. one full week and still pending. I had to call them once and asked them what happened, the Sony personal over the line could only say they can check and get back to me. The next day i called again to check if any technician has even start and immediately right after that they called me to go down to collect. Turn out they are giving me a new tablet. And the screen protector was not refund to me as they said that the device was still in the service centre.. had to buy a new one for myself. Such a disappointment in the servicing.. and now the current one i am holding as the same freaking problem.. also i notice the corners of the screen has some yellowish hue.

  • Qosmio F30-117 - green and blue lines on the screen

So my F30-117 has been working well recently until I turned it on and had green and blue lines (sort of like scan lines) overlapping the screen.
I tried to install new drivers from nvidia, but that didn't work, as Vista just picked them up as unknown.
Anyone got a solution? Do you think the graphics card needs to be reseated?
    Thanks in advance!
    - Shayde Zehetbauer.

You can easy determine what the reason is for this.
    Do you know how?
Just connect an external monitor to the notebook and check the picture on it.
If you have the same issue on the external monitor the reason is the graphic card and/or mainboard, if not its an internal display issue.
    Check this!
Furthermore you should only use the drivers from Toshiba. The Nvidia drivers dont have an overheat protection so the graphic chip could be damaged. Its on your own risk.
So try to install the drivers from Toshiba.

  • Flashing blue and green screen

Hi, I upgraded to Quicktime Pro 7 and now no videos, wether .mov, .avi or anything show up in the player. I get sound fine...the visual is just a flashing green and blue screen. Also, this is a product I purchased, and now I am told I can't get support from an apple technician. What kinda support is that?! I can't talk to anyone who will help me troubleshoot?
Thanks to anyone out there that can help me.

  • FCPX: When applying the keyer to green screen, is there a way to change the resulting color from black to another color (cream, blue, etc)?

Currently working on a project where I shot various video tributes in front of a green screen.  When using the keyer in FCPX, the resulting image is represented by a black background instead of a green one.  I'd like to change that color to blue, tan or something else so that when I apply a picture in a portion of the background, the remaining background looks fine.  More specifically, I plan to put images over the right shoulder of each person in the video.  The image will only take up about 1/4 of the background and the rest of it currently just looks like a black screen.   Thanks in advance for any advice.

Tom now I have another follow-up.  So i have the original green screen with the keyer applied which, emptied the background.  Now I've applied a color generator below that in the timeline and it generates a color.  How do I now go back and add the photo in the upper right corner of the clip?  Ultimatly the goal is to have the subject, with the color backdrop and a photo above their right shoulder.

  • Can you do Green Screen/Blue Screen/Chroma Key on Adobe Premiere Elements 12 for mac?

Can you do Green Screen/Blue Screen/Chroma Key on Adobe Premiere Elements 12 for mac?  If not, what are the alternatives?

    JimbobT
ChromaKey, GreenScreen Key, and BlueScreen Key are not included in Premiere Elements Mac.
Some suggest Videomerge as the alternative. I do not. But Videomerge is not THE alternative.
Instead, I prefer the Difference Matte as a substitute for the 3 absent keying effects. Please check out my blog post on that which includes
    the how to.
    http://atr935.blogspot.com/2013/05/pe11-difference-matte-as-substitute-for.html
The suggestion has met with good results according to the feedback that I have gotten to this.
I am strictly a Premiere Elements Windows user who does not prefer Videomerge even in Windows.
Please review, consider, and let us know the outcome.
    Thanks.

  • When I apply the Key for a green screen, everything blue turns purple. How can I correct?

When I apply the Key to an evenly lit greenscreen, anything blue turns purple. How can I correct this?

There's way too much blue in that green screen
    This is green
Try pulling down the spill level and reducing the spill tint. You're probably going to have to tweak the color selection manually.

  • Special effects... Chroma key  blue/green screen

Hello, im new to Final Cut, My friend is giving me his Final Cut Express HD 3.0 package and Im wondering if I'll be able to use a green screen/blue screen effect with this software, and if not, which software could you recomend.
    Thanks in Advance.

Sorry Edirol if you took umbrage - my comments were intended as a light hearted quip.
As a peace offering, take a look at this old thread where I and others have made a number of suggestions to help new "chromakeyers" - not the least being how to do it on the cheap!

  • Blue screen, or Green screen - which is less problematical

    Setup: Canon HV20, FCP6.1, MBPro 2.33
I have a Blue screen and am considering getting a Green screen. The Blue, being pretty dark, seems to cause problems for the camera, esp. with contrast with the actor that make for tricky lighting.
Just curious if others have this problem and if Green screen carries its own set of problems--too bright, etc.
Also if anyone knows a good place to buy the Green screen let me know.

Elmer, nice to see you here rather than at 2-pop.
The green screens from http://www.eefx.com/ are among the best I've seen.
I'm writing a basic green screen tutorial using one of its 10x9 foam backed products and we got a pretty good key using a HVX200 and some basic lighting.
    You also mentioned the HV20.
Take a look at this tutorial excerpt:

While lighting is crucial, from what I've researched, green seems to be a better election

  • Cropping and Blue Screening - 2 unrelated questions.

    1) When I straighten a still in Canvas by using the wire frame, to make a house level, say, the cropping lines, naturally, move with it. So a cropping line at an angle will give me a slanting top and bottom line. So how can I crop it so that the picture has a square aspect? Is the only recourse to go back to the original site for the picture, GIMP or iPhoto, perhaps, crop it there and re-import the photo into FCE? Or is there a quicker way?
    2) I have added a number of videos above my main video to show, for example, falling snow, and eliminated their black background by Modify - Composite Mode - Screen. Very easy and by no means unusual. So, my question, is, why all the fuss about green and blue screening? Setting it up seems troublesome. A black background for the purpose is much easier to make, and, for that matter, easier to find. I looked down my back yard this morning and this side of the creek are jet black bushes which would seem ideal for such a purpose. This seems such a no-brainer that I think I must be missing something. But it is curious.
    Allosaurus

    1) I shall immediately turn to the garbage matte section in your book - I'm sure I remember seeing one - and work it out from there. And here I always thought a garbage matte was that rug I bought in Cairo.
    2) A black screen. That does give me a thought. When I return to my upcoming masterpiece, " "Orrible Murder at the Castle Doom" I could put one of my granddaughters in a black suit, photograph her against a black background and Voila! a floating head. I wonder if they give out Oscars for original ideas?
    Once more. Thank you.
