Green Screen and Freezing on G3 iMac CRT

Hi - My son's Snow Slot Load 500mxh G3 iMac has recently developed some problems. It happened not long after updating to Tiger but seems not to be related to that. I installed the firmware upgrade before updating and the install went fine. It was working fine for a few weeks but started freezing up at random times requiring the power button to be held to restart. It would then restart and work fine but over the last couple weeks, the freeze ups have become so frequent that it's basically not worth bothering with. The freeze ups seem to have some sort of mechanical aspect to them - there is an actual flash or flicker or surge type thing as if the power was interupted. I have plugged the iMac into different power sources, etc. to be sure that it isn't somehow something in the houses wiring but that has not effect. In addition, in the last week or so, the screen has taken on a pronounced green cast. At first this problem was intermitent but now is pretty much permanent (it did come on once properly) It still works fine in terms of resolution, positioning, etc., no weird artifacts, just green. Both of the problems persist even if the iMac is started in OS9 or from a CD. I ran the Apple Hardware Diag CD and it gave a clean bill of health on everything....hmmm!
My guess is that it is a hardware problem and the obvious choice would be the video board. I don't want to put it out to pasture since it works great for my son but I also don't want to put bunches of time and $$$ into it swapping out different boards to try to figure the problem. Does anyone know any fairly definitive tests to determine if it is the Video board or, if not, what it is?
Thanks in advace for any help.

both the CRT and at least the High Voltage section of the PAV are likely bad. Right?<</div>
No only the PAV sounds like it's going bad. The fact that the CRT lights up means that it's good. The silver box on the back of the CRT that Apple refers to as the Video Board is part of the PAV. In fact when you replace the PAV you want to keep that same Video Board with the CRT so it involves cutting and splicing of 2 wires.
Let the HV on the PAV die and use an external Monitor<</div>
Most likely it's the flyback transformer on the PAV that is going and when that goes it's usually it's the Anode section that dies.
If I go with one of the options using an external Monitor, do I need to disconnect the internal CRT? I mean, I know that I don't have to disconnect the internal CRT to use an external Monitor but would it be better to?<</div>
Well if the Anode section dies then mute point because the HV will be gone anyway.
Replace the PAV, use an external Monitor<</div>
If you replace the PAV (deadly voltages involved! Also working PAVs are hard to come by) you wouldn't need an external monitor because the internal one would then work. My son has a 700 Snow that I dropped a DVD-ROM from a 500 Graphite into. Had to use Pacifist to get it to work. Hooked up an external LCD. Now he's watching Pirates II in stereo. He also uses it for Garage Band.

  • How do you use green screen and picture in picture in iMoive at the same scene?

I understand how to do green screen and picture and picture... but how do you do it in the same sequence.. so when you are speaking with a background picture and you want to add a picture or a story within that picture... there has to be a way to do that..

That is a great idea! So I just do everything to the clip involving the green screen. Export it to, say my desktop. Then import it back into iMovie. Then I will be able to add a picture in picture? Fantastic! Thanks so much!

  • Green Screen and Photoshop Elements 11?

Hi. I have tried multiple ways to remove the green screen in photoshop elements.  Being new to this program, I've found ways it was done in previous versions that don't appear to be in 11. The MagicWand doesn't get it all out (gotta love hair with green in between ).  Is there an easy way to be able to put a digital background on?
    Thanks!!

It appears I wasn't told the truth today by Adobe when I chatted with their rep on-line. I specifically asked "if Photoshop Elements 11 did Green Screen" and I was told "Yes". They even show it on the packaged version as I saw it in Fry's this morning. But there is no mention of this in the 'features' section on their website. Someone is playing games.
I  then purposely purchased an upgrade to my version 10 to 11 to do green screens and feel I've now wasted $85.
I was wondering why Green Screen Wizard was selling a plug-in for PS Elements 11 if Adobe already had it in there. I guess I know the answer to that one also.

  • How to fix iPad that has a green screen and lags when you try watching videos

How do you fix your iPad when it has a green screen and it lags when you try to watch videos, such as from YouTube?
I tried to watch YouTube on Safari but it does not work, and the app version of YouTube does not work either. When the video is playing, it will start to turn green, and it will lag.
Please, I would really appreciate it if you can help me, because I really want to watch videos again.
    Thank you very much!

First thing to try is to reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider should one appear until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.
If that doesn't help it is most likely a hardware failure. Make an appointment at an apple store to have the device examined by a technician.

  • Is there a way to green screen and do a picture in picture in iMovie

I was wondering if there was a way for me to be able to do a green screen and picture effect at the same time
Or in other words, is there a way to select two of these at once?

    In short : No.
    … but there's a workaround:
create a project with green screen first, export it, re-import it to iMovie, apply pic-in-pic ...
Or, dare the plunge to a professional tool, FCPX …

  • Can Motion 5 replace a green screen and blue screen in the same shot?

Can Motion 5 replace a green screen and blue screen in the same shot? I would like to replace a green screen with one image, and a blue screen with another.

Fox gives a good example for keying green & blue (or any other color)  from the same shot. I'd suggest doing a few things to get better accuracy.
First, the motion keyer always removes the color it detects the most of by default (blue/green). You can override this by setting the Strength parameter to zero, then use the Color sample tool to select the color you want. The advantage is motion will do a good job of targeting only the hue (color) that you want to remove and set an appropriate starting softness.  It also will remove spill based on this color.  Looking at Fox's example movie and the shot, I'd approach the same shot this way:
    Remove the Blue
    1. Apply the keyer and set the strength to zero.
    2. Use the Sample Color tool and select the blue (or other color) to be removed.
    3. Decrease the spill level (if needed). In Fox's example the spill from the blue glasses is going to be minimal, especially compared to the green screen, your shot may need different adjustments. Only de-spilling what you need to will give you more accurate color right away and minimize additional color correction that might be needed later.
    4. Use the Color selection tools (Chroma wheel/Luma bar) to fine tune.  Ideally you want a minimal tolerance, the inner selection, with a nice fall off, the outer selection. Try with the Scrub boxes setting first, then switch to manual if you need more control. Again see Fox's example.
    Remove Green
It's the same as the blue, you could apply the keyed to the same clip or a parent group, at this point it's many user preference.
With these techniques you can remove any color from a shot or create a mask based on a color. BTW, as you are learning to use the keyer I'd highly recommend  having the Color Selection open so you can see the graphs.  These give you real time feedback as you make selections and changes with the Strength, Refine and Color selection tools.  Watch what happens as you make selection or changes, sometimes the problem area is actually in the brightness not the color, or the softness may change  more than the tolerance selection.  Observing what is happening in these graphs will help you figure out wha to change and speed things up.

    Hi
I would trash - iMovie pref file - and re-try - sounds like this got faulty.
    • Delete iMovie pref. file. iMovie pref. file resides.
Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD) / Users / "Your account" / Library / Preferences
and is named. (one or more of these)
    com.apple.iMovie.plist
    com.apple.iMovie3.plist
    com.apple.iMovie7.plist
    com.apple.iMovie8.plist
    com.apple.iMovie9.plist
    com.apple.iMovieApp.plist
    and find
    com.apple.iApps.plist
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this/these file/s out on to desk-top.
    Now restart iMovie.
If You run Mac OS X.7 or more - then the Library in the User-account folder is invisibly and need to be set to be viewable. IT IS NOT in the Library on Root level (when opening MacintoshHD - first window = root level)
( It can be done like this: Open Terminal, then enter:
chflags nohidden ~/Library (exactly like this - space included)
Press return, then restart, and it will always be visible until the next major update, when you do the same thing again. )

  • My ipod only goes to the apple screen and freezes then turns off after about a minute. Is this fixable?

My ipod only goes to the apple screen and freezes then turns off after about a minute. Is this fixable?

Try a system reset.  It's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.

  • Green screen and card

    guys,
Ive done this before but i need to key out a green screen and green card what is the best way of doing this with best effect? Would motion or shake be better for this or should i stick with FCP?
    Cheers
    Dan

what you are probably seeing is compression artifacts causing edge chattering. the best, really only solution is to track a mask in to cut the hole rather then trying to key anything. of course if you could go back and reshoot and send the camera into something like a MXO2 and capture to ProRes / uncompressed would of been best, but nothing you can do now. the other problem is probably that the trackers aren't that good - something like mocha can eat thru this pretty easily. you may wind up doing this by hand.

  • Green screen and box locking up sometimes?

    Hi All
Well we have had BT vision for 2 weeks now and are enjoying it but we have had a couple of problems.Sometimes while we are watching TV(freeview)  the box reeboots  and we get the BT vision start screen (blue) with boot count 01 in the bottom left corner. The sometimes we get a green screen and after about 5 minutes it reboots to the start screen. And then this morning it just locked up while my son was watching disney XD (picture frozen) and would not respond at all so I had to unplug the box and power it up again(reboot screen ,starting BT vision) and now it is working fine.Is this to be exspected or do we have a faulty box? Thanks in advance

All software is essentially in development we don't need to call it Beta. My Mac etc as does Windows or phones constantly are updated.
    So it is with BTVision

  • After installing Yosemite my Imac just goes to a white screen and freezes, it has been there for almost 36 hours any ideas as to why it is taking so long?

I have downloaded Yosemite from the App store and I attempted to upgrade from OS X 10.9.5. It is stuck on a white screen with a moveable mouse pointer but that is it. I can't get Command + L to work, so I can see any progress that is being made and I have tried to force boot it twice. Each time I force boot the machine I get a progress bar that goes about half way across and then just a blank white screen. I have read on some blogs that patience is the best procedure for this freeze but I have been waiting for almost 36 hours now and nothing is happening. One thing I want to mention is I have VMWare installed with a virtual machine of 300gigs, could this be the cause of the hangup? My 27inch IMAC is about 3 or 4 years old with a terabyte hard drive and 32gigs of ram. I have unplugged everything from the back except the network cable. Is about 36 hours reasonable for an upgrade? Is there a way to cut my losses and revert back to OS X 10.9.5?

When you start your notebook press F8 to enter Advanced boot options.
Is Repair my computer option available?
If yes choose it and press ENTER. Follow the menu on the screen and when you will see System recovery options try to use System Restore option.
Do you have some important data saved on your notebook?
If not install OS again using HDD recovery option and after 2 hours you will have clean preinstalled OS and everything will be OK again.

  • Green screen and video freezing while maximizing videos playing in iTunes?

After a year-and-a-half of seamless operation, iTunes started malfunctioning yesterday. When trying to play a video (either a TV show or a music video), the video will often freeze when I hit command-F to maximize. The audio keeps playing just fine. Sometimes I'm able to get the video running again by hitting escape and command-F a few times, and by hitting space bar repeatedly to pause and unpause. Before starting to work, iTunes displays a green screen for a half-second.
My system is at 10.5.8 and my iTunes is fully updated. My computer is an aluminum-unibody MacBook Pro 15".
I have tried turning the computer off for a while, reinstalling iTunes, and switching from discrete graphics to integrated graphics, all without any improvement. I doesn't happen every time I play a video or a TV show, but it does happen a majority of the time, and it often takes 10-20 seconds of fiddling to get the video to play.
    Any ideas? I'm stumped.

I've been having the same problem as you Mitlov. This is one of the reasons I always get a bit leery about updating my current version of iTunes, iPhone, or iPod. Something always stops working amongst one or more of them. Two years ago I updated iPod and I remember it took a month before I could get the iPod to work again. If you hear about a fix for this problem (besides just buying Snow Leopard) please post it back in the discussions. There are a lot of people who will benefit from it!

  • 20" Imac has white screen and freezes at start-up

my 20" imac will not start....help...All I get is a white screen and tone at start-up then it stays white. I tried hooking up a bootable firewire drive and pressing the alt/option key at start up nothing. I also tried the command/option/p/r at start up, it will reboot to the same screen. I also tried running the hardware diagnostics at start-up...no response. Computer was purchased on Nov .4 2007, warrenty just expired.
    Help......Please....

I had the exact same problem today. My iMac 20" (iMac 8,1) would't boot any more, staying stuck on a white screen immediately after the normal start-up chime. Nothing worked (no safe mode, no DVD boot, no disk selection icon when starting with alt pressed, no Apple hardware test, no parameter RAM reset, power management chip reset had no effect, no verbose mode, not even open firmware).
I browsed the forums, but what I found didn't help, so I was about to stop trying and have it fixed by Apple. But my son told me he had noticed that after "a long time" (he's 4...), a folder with a flashing ? would appear. I figured that wouldn't happen in case of a severe hardware failure, so I tried one last thing: I hooked up an old PowerBook in target disk mode via Firewire and restarted the iMac. I tried several times (with and without alt pressed), but nothing happened (when pressing alt, a functional mouse pointer would appear, though).
Then I restarted a last time and left the iMac sit there on its white screen for about 20 minutes... and that's when the miracle happened: it finally booted off the target-disk mode PowerBook's system!
I ran Disk Utility, which saw the iMac internal HD as disk2s0 (or something like that), and launched the disk repair process. After about three error-ridden verify-repair cycles, the green ok message finally appeared and the volume mounted as if nothing had happened. I rebooted off the internal disk without a glitch, and I still have to find damaged or lost files.
I guess I was lucky that my HD problem was benign enough to be cured by Disk Utility. But even if that had not been the case, at least I'd have known that the HD failed, and maybe I could have saved some files using recovery software. Whatever the case, if you've got an external bootable drive, it's definitely worth trying before handing your iMac over for (usually horribly expensive) repairs.
    Good luck!
