  • Really Important Car/Green Screen Scene

Okay, I'm in my teenage years (so that means low-budget), and I'm making a movie (well, series of short movies, shall I say "series?"). There is a car scene, and I have a green screen. iMovie isn't doing anything for me right now, it won't even let me edit the size of the videos anymore. So, I'm considering buying Final Cut Express HD. Will that let me use the Chroma Keyer Effect (green screen effefct)? Before I made the switch to Mac, I was using Sony Vegas on Windows. That was a 50-100 dollar program that had the green screen effect. I never really used it though. Now, that I'm making my series, I decided to get an iMac. I need to know if Final Cut will let me do everything I need for this car scene. Also, what will I need to know to shoot it. I know I'm going to have to shoot the road passing by, but I don't know if it'll fit the background of the car scene. I'm afraid one will end up being too up close, making everything look bigger. Please help me, I'm just a beginner, and I really want to make it big one day.

    Hi Anthony,
Yes, Final Cut Express has effects for chroma key and green & blue screen. They do essentially the same job except the chroma key effect gives you more detailed controls; it's also more challenging to use. They all work really well, although you will find different people prefer one or the other depending on their experience and what they are trying to do with it.
As Ian mentioned, if you have one of the new Intel iMacs you should wait until the universal version of FCE is released.
As far as what else you need, you will need a green or blue background which could be either fabric or paint. Whether you choose blue or green depends on which color is less likely to be in the other elements of the shot that you are keying, although most people nowdays seem to be using green. I got a Botero fabric green screen from B&H Photo in NYC that was not expensive and it works great. They have many different screen colors & sizes as well as paint.
I recommend that you get a copy of Tom Wolsky's book Final Cut Express Editing Workshop. It's worth every penny.
There are also a number of very good articles on chroma keying on Ken Stone's Final Cut website

  • IMovie 11 green screen - audio of the video in foreground won't play

Elementary teacher. Groups of students are creating movies and adding green screen effects to videos. In more than one group, the audio begins fine, but as the group edits (over the course of a day or two), eventually the audio in the foreground video stops playing. I see the audio waves, but do not hear the audio. When skimming the clip in the event library, the audio is fine. When the clip is reinserted, the audio plays. Nothing is ducked, muted or turned down.
Why are we losing the audio?

Thanks for the suggestion Brad, that makes sense... However, I was hoping there was a "straight" iMovie solution.
I'd prefer to not have to 1) spend any money and 2) use a program to do something iMovie is already supposed to do.

  • IMovie 10.0.8 Event Footage Not Sync'd After Green Screen Conversion

I am using iMovie on a 2013 Late Macbook Pro 13" Retina 2.4 GHz iCore i5, 8GB RAM., Intel Iris 1536 MB.  I record on Canon 1080p 30 fps MXP.  The event footage plays fine with green screen (GS) background.    But when I create a Movie and first add background then event footage and convert to GS to replace GS with picked background, the video eventually gets out of sync with the video.
    Thx

    Hi
YOU need to - in iMovie - Turn on Advanced Tools !
top row menu - with an Apple top left ---> iMovie ---> down to preferences ---> Here select to turn on Advanced tools .
Now it will work when You drop a clip onto another IN a MOVIE PROJECT ! (can not be done in Event's)
Next problem I had - was to get right clip onto the other - what was the Background and What was the Green screen - BUT just test - You only got two ways to try out.

  • How can I use the green screen with iMovie?

Hey guys! I was wondering how does the green screen effect work with iMovie 11? I need to use green screen in iMovie in school for a project and I am trying to troubleshoot the problem.
    Help is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Ben

Record a video against a green screen and import it to imovie.
Then place the green screen footage ON TOP of the background you want and a list should come up. Select green screen. Also, before you do any of that make sure that your advanced tools are selected under preferences in imovie.

  • Does iMovie for the iPad support green screen functionality?

Was wondering if someone could help me out with this  I want to incorporate the use of green screen in my classroom.

Sorry to say that I, too, am having trouble with my camera and iMovie. I have an Olympus Stylus-9000, and it doesn't pick up when I try to import to iMovie. I checked the list of iMovie-supported cameras online, and not one Olympus model was there. I guess we're just unlucky...

  • IMovie "green screen" feature has serious problems.

I precisely followed the iMovie "help" instructions to make a green screen effect for what should have been a simple iMovie project... a 10-second video tagline for closing titles on a much more extensive project.
According to iMovie help, it should have been easy (and maybe even fun). It wasn't. Five hours of my life melted away forever. The iMovie "green screen" feature has serious problems. Remember that old Mac advertising campaign that said "It just works"? Well, it doesn't. Shame on Apple and the iMovie development team.

    Folks,
I ran into the same issue (I named it "transparent green screen", I hadn't a better name).
I spent about a week to solve this problem, since I needed it to build a marriage slideshow.
    The tools & Config:
iMovie 09, iPhoto 09, Adobe After Effects CS4
Mac OS X 10.6.2, MacBook Pro 13" 2.26 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB RAM
The Solution for the "transparent green screen":
I created a movie in AE, and put a green background into it. It was the pure green color.
When I imported the movie into iMovie I just got the "transparent green screen", not the real effect.
I some cases, by changing the background images, I could get the green screen to work, but it was kind of random. Which made it harder to solve it.
I thought it could be because of AE, some incompatibility. I went to Youtube and downloaded a green screen video (a woman dancing in a green background). I inserted the video into iMovie, and it worked just fine, all the way.
Then I tried to match the green color I was creating digitally with the Youtube video's green color. It didn't work either. The "transparent" effect was there again.
But when I looked at that Youtube video, I noticed that the green color was not pure. Because that green background was made in the real world, it was not pure, there were some shades of green.
Well, I just replicated that into the digital world. Modified my video's digital green background. From pure green to a gradient green, but very subtle, almost imperceptible. Just to replicate the "imperfection from the real world".
That was it. Solved. Maybe iMovie 09 needs that imperfection to work well. Using "pure greens" might confuses it.
Please do your tests. And let me know your results.
    Regards and greetings from Brazil.

  • How to fix green screen blotches on teeth in imovie 10.0.7

There are green blotches on the individual's teeth from the green screen used.  I need to know how to fix in imovie 10.0.7.

"Did you have spinach for dinner?" ... SCNR!
And such a nice smile, 'priceless' and most probably not to be re-done, right?
sorry, to say, but that reaches the limits of lil' iMovie.
You can not manually adjust the color-key in iMovie, as you can do in FCPX, nor does it offer any 'masking' features as Motion would...
.. FCPX offers a 30d free and fully functional (no watermarks etc) trial ... but then you have to learn how to handle color-key in that pro app ... which is not a beginners task ...

  • Green screen editing in iMovie 10.0.04?

You used to be able to do green screen editing in iMovie, is that no longer the case in 10.0.04?

sure, there's green-screen - but handling is a bit different to previous versions of iMovie =simpler , no need to switchON any 'advanced' things ...

  • Green screen function in imovie 10.0

    Hello Everybody,
in older imovie editions you could unlock advance settings in imovie and then use green screen function for videos.
But now in my new imovie 10.0 i don't find advance settings and so i could not use this function for my videos.
    Could anybody help?
    Thanks a lot in advance.
    Felix

The first step is to create a “connected clip.” When you add a green screen clip to the timeline, simply drag it above the clip you want it to appear on top of. Next, use the Adjustments Bar to set it as a green screen clip. Complete instructions are available here:

  • Is there a way to green screen and do a picture in picture in iMovie

I was wondering if there was a way for me to be able to do a green screen and picture effect at the same time
Or in other words, is there a way to select two of these at once?

    NiCKC17 wrote:
… Or in other words, is there a way to select two of these at once?
    In short : No.
    … but there's a workaround:
create a project with green screen first, export it, re-import it to iMovie, apply pic-in-pic ...
Or, dare the plunge to a professional tool, FCPX …
