  • Boot/Loading Screen Issue - suspecting MBR (MacBook Pro 11,3)

    Recap:
Bought MacBook Pro 11, 3 at release - decided to install windows 7 64bit via BootCamp. Ended up with quite a few problems, decided to abandon task, went back to BookCamp to restore the partitions. Thought all was well, but I have one little issue.
When I enter my password to pass through to the loading screen, my screen glitches for a second - basically loading the a smaller (1/4 size) image of my desktop, then flashes to full screen and continues to operate normally.
Can anyone please tell me what's going on with my MBR reports?

Thoughts? What can I do to restore the MBR?

generally, when you hear the apple beep codes you wont be able to boot up as usual.  It may be an indication of ram that is ready to fail.  Bring it in to Apple to be on the safe side.

  • Green screen at startup on Macbook pro retina

On startup, the Apple logo appears, then the gray screen changes to teal (turquoise) for just a flash and back to gray, then continues to desktop. Is there anything to worry about? This has only happened for the the last week or so.

You're not the only person having similar problems after updating to 10.9.3... a lot of users have experienced pink, red, yellow, etc., screens. It doesn't seem to cause any problems, however, and is probably nothing to actually worry about. I've had it in the past on previous releases of OS X but it didn't affect my computer usage.
I know that it looks annoying, but I don't think that there's really anything that can be done right now. You'll just have to wait for 10.9.4 to come out or, if it really bothers you, you may want to try a re-install of 10.9.3 and see if that 'fixes' anything. If you're still under AppleCare, you could take the machine into the genius bar at your local Apple Store (make an appointment first!) or to an AASP.

  • Macbook Pro 2008. My screen stayed black and is unresponsive.

Macbook Pro 2008. My screen stayed black and is unresponsive and sleep light is on. I shut down and then restarted and nothing happened on screen but sleep light came on and is solid.

It could possibly be the video card, or the logic  board.  You could try a smc reset if you have not done s yet.   smc reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
I had an issue similar to this, and there was a bad logic board, hard drive and video card.
You might want to bring it in to the Apple store, they do the diagnostic for free and give you a repair price.
They offer a flat repair rate, which they fix what ever is wrong as long it was due to liquid damage.
The repair cost me about 1/3rd the price of a new machine and the machine has been fine ever since.
It's worth getting it checked out.

  • Having issues with 13" MacBook Pro. Running very slow and blank screen and sleep mode.

Bought my MBPro summer 2009. About a month / 6 weeks ago it began to run extremely slow at points. Now it is running poorly and getting very slow on a daily basis, to the point where it will not open applications, documents or even web pages for in excess of 5 minutes. I'm beginning to lose patience!
Also at the exact same time of these performance issues occuring, my MacBook Pro will not awaken from sleep mode when the lid is closed. Showing a blank dark screen and having to hard reset in order to boot up my system again and get it running.
What is the best solution in order to resolve these issues?
    Your help is greatly appreciated.

Did you run Disk Utility>First Aid?  If so what were the results?  This is a copy of mine, note that the bottom line says:  The partition map appears to be OK:
    Ciao.

  • Problem with startup - "black & white" matrix screen in macbook pro 2008

Hi guys, i am desperated to get some help for my macbook pro 2008 model. I couldn't start my OS at all by using safety mode or any other mode. If the mac just restarted itself without progressing to the main screen. If anyone know what is the problem (hardware or software etc...), please let me know.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
This looks like a GPU or display problem.

  • MacBook Pro 2008 not turning on, no sign of power and screen remains black

    I have a MacBook Pro 2008.
It was working fine until when one morning i wanted to turn it on as usual only to find out that it can not power on.
When i press the power-on button, i can hear the hard disk spinning but no display, the screen remains black like not getting power.
No beep sound when tried to boot without RAM installed.
The battery and the Charger worked fine when tested with another computer.
The RAM works fine when tested with another Computer too.
What could be wrong with my computer, i hope it is not the board that is dead.
How can i overcome this problem?

    Op Charles,
You can try a SMC reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Follow directions for a battery that applies to your machine.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1365
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1367
You can check these as well
It sounds as thogh the the GPU may be dead, you can take it in to an Apple Genius (make an appointment) they will disgnose it for free and give you your options.
    Good Luck

  • Macbook Pro 2008 (4,1) RAM issues

    Hello all
I've had some maddening issues with installing new RAM into my Macbook Pro 2008.
    Machine: MBP March 2008 (4,1) , 2.5Ghz, 2GB RAM, OSX 10.7.5
I ordered and installed a pair of 2GB RAM sticks from Crucial, to replace the two 1GB RAM sticks I had installed, to bring my machine up to a total of 4GB. Since doing that, the machine would kernel panic repeatedly (and sometimes start-up with three beeps, indicating memory issues). After checking repeatedly that they must be the right RAM modules for my machine, I got the sticks replaced by crucial, but afterwards I still had the same issue, so I determined it must be the machine's fault.
This started an arduous process of testing and trying to fix every aspect of the machine I could think of, resetting the PRAM, repairing permissions trying different combinations of RAM modules, running all the Disk-warrior and TechTool repairs and diagnostics (its clean), running the machine with no third-party devices attached, safe-boot mode, booting from an external drive, and eventually re-installing the entire operating system and running off a clean install. In all the cases, if I had the 4GB in, the machine would kernel panic. I can't begin to list all the things and combinations I tried in order to isolate the issue, but it seemed the only thing I could determine would guarantee the machine to lock-up was to run it with the 4GB.
I also ran rember utility for several hours, several times while the 4GB sticks were in (and it found nothing).
There is a curious pattern however.
Placing both the 2GB RAM (total for 4GB) modules inside the machine will guarantee a kernel panic. Placing one 2GB module and one 1GB module (total of 3GB) also guarantees a crash. However, using either of the 2GB modules alone, in either of the two slots, is perfectly acceptable. Isn't that strange?
It's almost as if the machine is allergic to having both slots occupied at once, but that doesn't make any sense because before buying the 2GB modules, it ran with two 1GB modules, one in each slot.
I'm going to try putting back in the two original 1GB modules just to see if it can still run. If anyone has any suggestions of anything I can try to get this machine working with its 4GB, I will be EXTREMELY grateful!
    Thank you,
    Andrew
    Andrew

I tried running from 1GB + 1GB, and it ran fine for a few hours, but upon waking from sleep I got the dreaded 3 beeps. This absolutely never happens otherwise, so I know where the problem lies now. The machine is back onto a single 2GB stick and running fine.
My machine won't run with both slots used. I don't know if that is only a hardware problem, if it could be firmware or even some type of software bug, but that is where the issue is.
The RAM I ordered is the right one for my machine, according to the crucial website, and also to their ram scanning tool. They are 2GB 200-pin DDR2 SODIMM 667Mhz sticks, and I'm quite sure those are the right ones for my machine. I will contact them and point them to this thread and se what they say though.
And remember that in this case, it doesn't work with an older module either. 1GB + 2GB crashes. It eventually crashes if I have both slots occupied.

  • How do I migrate from a 2008 MacBook Pro without a screen to new 2014 MacBook Pro?

How do I migrate from a 2008 MacBook Pro without a video screen to a 2014 Macbook Pro?

Use your backup drive instead. No backup drive, then get a monitor and connect it to your computer. Or take the whole shebang to the Apple Store for help with the transfer. Or you can remove the drive from the old MBP and put it in an external enclosure.

    Jamesandmacbooks,
if by “free” you mean “gratis” (as opposed to, say, “open source”), then there’s only one version of OS X to date that’s gratis, namely Mavericks. You can only download Mavericks if you currently have Mac OS X 10.6.6 or later installed. If you’re still running Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5.something) on your 2008 MacBook Pro, then you’ll need to first purchase the white retail Snow Leopard DVD, install it on your MacBook Pro, and run Software Update to get it to 10.6.8, after which you can download Mavericks gratis from the Mac App Store and install that. Be sure that your MacBook Pro meets all of Mavericks’ system requirements before trying to install it. If you currently run any PowerPC apps, note that they won’t be supported in any version of OS X after Snow Leopard.

  • I want to remove the monitor from my 17" Macbook Pro 2008 to use as an external for my Macbook Pro 15" 2012. How can I convert lvds to Thunderbolt and power the monitor?

I want to remove the monitor from my 17" Macbook Pro 2008 to use as an external for my Macbook Pro 15" 2012. How can I convert lvds to Thunderbolt and power the monitor?

It's almost impossible.  The new iMacs have a Target Display Mode, but it's built to do that.  Without ripping your screen out, finding an acceptable power supply, frame, and whatever electronics to convert a Thunderbolt signal to the screen, the cost will be much larger than buying a cheaper HiDef monitor that runs with an HDMI to Thunderbolt cable to your MacBook 15.  In fact, you can sell your 17" MBP for a lot of money, unless it's broken or something, buying you a really sweet monitor.
By the way, I found your answer by searching this forum.  I would suggest using the search function here in the futuere.

  • Multiple Issues with my Macbook Pro

Jan 2011- Received my Macbook Pro 15 inch (late 2011 version)
Feb 2011- Overheating issue, laptop started running very slowly without any applications open
Feb 2011- Sent it to Apple US, test was run, no issue found by Apple, they re-installed the OS, piece returned back, seemed to be running normally
Early 2012- Major battery issue, battery would suddenly drop down from 90% to 25% in 5 minutes with hardly any applications open
From late 2012 to present- When the laptop is put to sleep (with screen closed) and is opened after half an hour or longer, the mouse cursor remains stuck on the screen after waking it up. The only way to continue using the laptop is to restart it so that the mouse starts moving again. Every time the laptop is woken up after sleep mode, the speed of all running applications comes down noticeably.
Mid 2013- Replaced the Battery for Rs. 8000/- After using it just for two years
Late 2013- Laptop fan runs at a high speed even though there are no applications open on the system, suspected Temperature sensor issue, Activity monitor shows a particular kernel that is taking up a huge amount of CPU load.
I have only faced issues with my macbook pro and it still doesn't end,Is there any way I can ask for an out of warranty replacement or atleast if there is a permanent solution at an affordable cost? Apple as a brand has set a benchmark , it is only fitting that as loyal apple customers we expect products to exceed expectations in terms of performance and longeivity and not pose as a problem at every turn. There isn't any sense in going on spending on a laptop that costs a bomb already!!!

While you were on the warranty or if you still have it, you should check out the Apple Store. When you had noticed these problems earlier, you should have immediatly reacted upon them, rather than waiting.

  • Screen tearing problem in Macbook Pro

Hi, I've been having some issues with my Macbook Pro 3.1. For the past few months the screen starts tearing at some specific points in the screen, it's like it's getting cut in three parts. The tearing effect starts a few minutes since booting up. It's very annoying.
Went to a local Apple service and they told me that the repair costs would amount $900 (I'm in Chile). A new (faster) computer costs $2000 so I won't pay that price for a simple screen replacement (that costs $200 for standard PCs). They replaced the video chipset for "free" ($80) since it's in a replacement program.
I don't think that the screen (LCD) is broken, maybe it's just another part/cable that needs replacement. Does anyone know what can be causing this problem?
I made a video in case anyone can help me:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=am5ah0TLLG0
    Many thanks.

IMHO the problem is with the graphics chip in all the 2011 MacBook Pros: 13, 15, and 17" alike. Go to any Apple store, go to any of the new Macs, run iPhoto and start a slide show. You will see tearing of the image on the top 5 - 15% of the screen. Its worst on the 17". Or just move any window back and forth rapidly near the top of the screen. Apple has yet to acknowledge the problem as of this writing. I feel like I'm in "the emporer has no clothes". Really just go to an Apple store, its very easy to reproduce the problem on any of the 2011 MacBook Pros. (not the white one though, and the Air is fine too). Then show it to the genius bar guy.
A friend of mine bought a 15" to show off his photos. He had to return it, and Apple was nice enough to give him his money back. All the Apple resellers and repair here in Taiwan know about this problem, but nobody can fix it. Apple has yet to acknowledge it, or fix it. Hopefully there's a software work-around. Replacing all those motherboards would be expensive. I suspect the Intel 3000 graphics chip, Intel has been trying to do graphics for 10 years, talking a big game but failing to deliver.  Its not the first time Apple has been burned on graphics. I guess they'll just have to make their own GPU's to go with their own CPU's.
Someone suggested try disabling Quartz Extreme using Quartz Debug. I haven't tried it.

  • I occasionally have issues waking my macbook pro up from sleep mode and have to restart the computer. The apple store replaced the sleep part but the problem is still there

I occasionally have issues waking my macbook pro up from sleep mode resulting in my need to restart the computer. I dislike all of my programs opening at once when I do get the computer started becasue it slows the cpu down. The apple store replaced the sleep part but the problem is still there. Note: i never had this problem with snow leopard

I'm not certain but my new MBA 13...when in sleep mode comes back on from a black screen when I simply click on the left mouse button. Also, one time I did a SECURE EMPTY TRASH on files that totalled more than 1GB and it took so long that the fan kept increasing in speed so I pressed on the POWER button and the MBA shut...I was able to boot up with no problem. As a rule, I now only do secured erases for trash bin data totalling 500mb or less...anything above that gets a regular erase (dump).

  • There's a soft white dot on the screen of my new MacBook Pro Retnia

There's a soft white dot on the screen of my new MacBook Pro Retnia That is visible especially when the background is light. It isn't a sharp dot but rather a soft blurred looking dot. Does anybody else have something like this or does anyone know what it is? I'm thinking its s dead pixel but it doesn't look like one that i've seen on other lcd displays.
I set my desktop background to a 50% grey and that's how I found it. Now that I did, i can't stop looking at it. I tried to take a pic of it its in the center of the photo. Its not easy to see on the photo but, its very easy to see on the display. Oh and its not dirt or something on the surface. Not sure if i should go to the genius bar on it. I am worried that it may get worse. Any input is appreciated.

I also had this problem, same make and model and specifications as you have. Brought it into Apple and also called them about. They stated they have not heard of this yet although I find that hard to believe with the # of cases on this being reported. Must have been a bad lot or batch of Retina MBP's that were made and this got by quality control. But they were okay with giving me a new one on the spot.
As you said, doesn't show on darks but on whites; oh boy it sure does and it is annoying on photo editing and documents where white is all you see; about 1.5mm x 1mm big and bright like a little star. Very hard to detect at first unless you have the white background up as wallpaper.
I sent my MBP back for a replacement and told them I did not want a repair on a computer that was less than 3 weeks old. Stuff happens and no one is perfect so long as Apple and their resellers stand by and make amends by issuing new MBP's. I did not buy mine via Apple direct this time, but rather used a authorized Apple reseller and fortunately they agreed to issue a new one. Keeping fingers crossed.
