Green Screen MPB Mid 2009 model HELP

Hi, I bought my MBP January 2010, and have had no problems with it until this morning.  It was in sleep mode over night and when I turned it back on the screen on the MPD began to flicker and now there is a series of fuzzy green lines through out the screen.  I am running an external display and it is displaying perfectly.  There are two graphics cards installed; NIVIDIA GeForce 900M and NIVIDIA 9600M GT. I have switched between both cards and there is no change, which would lead me to believe that the graphics cards are not the problem (as stated in previous threads)
Does anyone know what the problem might be, and if it was a design flaw at the manufacturing stage am i entitled to a free repair, bearing in mind that the MBP is now 2.5 years old

It could be the display, it could be the cable.  Bring it to a genius bar for a free diagnostic test and they should be able to determine what the exact problem is and the costs involved.  Unless you have Apple care, I doubt that any repair will be free.
Ciao.

  • Macbook pro 15" mid 2009 model display "freeze", please help!!!

I have a Macbook pro 15" mid 2009 model which all of a sudden startet "freezing" everytime i restart it, opens spesific programs, etc, and it is really starting to bug me! Sometimes it takes me 15 minutes to start the computer, and then freezes for another 5 minutes when i try to start i.e word.
I currently have the Mac OS X 10.6.8 (snow leopard).
Could this be fixed by a software update of some sort? If not, how can i fix it (if possible at all)?
    Thanks!

You have provided some good basic information, but I'll need more in order to address our question.
    1. When did you notice this problem? Relatively recently, or have you been having this problem for a while?
    2. Can you correlate the problem with the installation of new software? Which software?
    3. How much RAM do you have? If it's 2gb, that's probably not enough - 4gb is ideal for your unit.
    4. Do you update your MBP with software update? Have you updated your browser and plugins?
    5. Have you cleaned your MBP? Recently, an increasing amount of users have seen improvement by getting dust from your unit.
    6. What programs cause you to freeze, or this happen with all applications? What happens when you notice the freeze? Do you see a spinning wheel? Does the display freeze? Be as specfic as possible.
I realize this is a detailed homework assignment, but answer as completely as you can. This is an answer to your issue - it's just a matter of narrowing things down.

  • Airport not available on MacBook Pro 15 unibody mid 2009, PLEASE HELP!!!!

Ok, so I just recently put in a new hard drive and battery by myself, since my original MacBook Pro hard drive became "corrupted" most likely due to a parallel desktop software I was using. Anyway so I finally install everything on the new hard drive and airport is not working. The icon is NOT EVEN THERE on the menu bar. I go into Network and the only thing I've got is Ethernet and Firewall. I've tried the "+" thing, and it didn't work. I then went into "Assist Me" , then "Diagnostics" and the airport option is greyed out, so is the external modem. Oh, and the operating system is Snow Leopard  OS X 10.6.3. Has a 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor.
I also deleted the "SystemConfiguration" Folder and found something interesting. The "com.apple.airport.preferences.plist" was never there and when I reboot, the "com.apple.network.identification.plist" also disappeared. I had to drag it back into the folder from the desktop where I put a copy just in case something weird happened, which it did.
I checked System Profiler, clicked on AirPort and it gives me stuff under "Software Versions", so I'm guessing it's acknowledging that THERE IS a card and can give me all the information for it, but I can't get the mac to use it. I reset the PRAM AND SMC and still nothin.
So, I figured it must be hardware, right? So I open the mac like i did when I installed the new hard drive and battery, and I CANNOT FIND THE DARN AIRPORT CARD. On the mid 2010 models it's with the bluetooth card at the top and I've tried looking online for ANYONE, who has tried to get to the airport card on the mid 2009 model for the MacBook Pro 15 unibody. And found nothing. I think it's in the clutch, but I'm too scared to touch that area. Does anyone else have any ideas or have I covered all my bases?
I REALLY DO NOT want to go to Apple. I don't have AppleCare and don't have the money to have them poke around and tell me the same thing I already know. And I spent way too much on this computer to not be able to use it to full capacity. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!

  • What is the right charger for a MacBook Pro 13"  mid 2009 model?

What is the right charger for a MacBook Pro 13" mid 2009 model? I have two chargers for two different Mac and don't know which is  thankswhich. I'm really looking for specific details such as voltage/watts and all the rest to idenify my charger.  A link to where to web page where I could purchase the correct charger would also be very useful. Many thanks.
All help much appreciated. THANK YOU

Both power adapter I have are different (at the magnet end) from the one in link.
Earlier adapters have T shaped connectors, which Apple later changed to the L shape, presumably to make them more abuse-proof. Either one is fine and the one you are using will not damage your Mac.
Retina MBPs and new MBAs use a completely different MagSafe 2 connector which will not fit (without an adapter).

  • Mid 2009 MacBook help please :)

Hi, I have got an Apple MacBook, a mid 2009 model, which seems to freeze every so often, and when it does it it will not un-freeze so i have to turn it off using the power button, which is extremely annoying when i am doing work, as it will loose any un saved data, and could potentially break something.
I was wondering if it was because i have quite alot of things running at the same time which may take up alot of processing power? It Has a 2 GB ram in it, and has windows 7 which has been installed using boot camp if that would affect anything.
I am fairly new to Mac, and was wondering if anyone here could help with my problem
Oh, and im not sure if its supposed to, but it gets very hot when its been on a while.
    Thanks.

  • Will  2x2GB PC2-5300 work in a 2x2GB PC2-6400 slot for a 2.13 ghz mid-2009 model?

    Will  2x2GB PC2-5300 work in a 2x2GB PC2-6400 slot for a 2.13 ghz mid-2009 model?
I bought some Ram online, but had no idea if id work. I havent received the Ram yet so what would be the consequences if I put that ram in?

If by chance it should work, the 5300 series RAM is slower than the 6400.
This would affect the overall performance (or make it worse) if it works at all.
I'd not bother. Check with the crucial.com or macsales.com site for quality
RAM and match the computer specs with the proper capacity RAM specs.
Poor or improper RAM can also create a situation where 'kernel panics' arise.
Cheap or bad quality can work awhile (if within specification) yet fail under load.
    Good luck in this matter...!

  • Mag safe adapter for macbook pro 15 inch mid 2009 model

is it safe to  use a 60 watts mag safe adapter for my macbook pro 15 inch mid 2009 model. i went to istore to have a battery replacement and they advice me to change my 60 watts mag safe to 85 watts because it is not compatible.....

    use the 85w charger.
"Power adapters for Intel-based Apple notebooks are available in 45W, 60W, and 85W varieties. Although you should always use the proper wattage adapter for your Apple notebook, you can use an adapter of a higher wattage without issue.
For instance If you have a MacBook (13-inch Late 2009) that normally uses a 60W adapter, you can also use an 85W adapter with that computer. You would not use a 45W adapter with that computer; it would not provide enough power for that MacBook. "

  • New ssd install in MBP 5,3 (mid 2009 model)

    Hello,
New to ssd installing and terminology used in some of the discussion forums I have been reading!
About to install my new ssd and have a few questions before starting.  (ssd is a crucial M500 480gb)
I'll try to be a blunt as I can because I tend to ramble on.......
    1. Do I upgrade/downgrade efi? (Read in other discussions)
    2. Do I enable/disable trim? (Read in other discussions)
    3. I am currently running 10.6.8 and wanted to purchase the newest OS possible to install.  I've read of a few issues of ML and the battery drain issues.  Is it best to just stay with my 10.6.8 for now?
    4. I also purchased an 8gb ram upgrade over the current 4gb ram to do at the same time.  Don't I have to reset something once I power the MBP back up to recognize the ram?
    5. I purchased an external case to put the (currently in the computer) hdd in once I take it out.  I planned on installing the ssd, putting the current hdd in the case, and migrating only my contacts, iTunes library, iPhoto library, and my flip videos from it.  I have the original install disc from my MBP-can't I just install it onto the ssd from the DVD drive? (I hear of people installing the OS from USB-is there any disadvantage/advantage to this over my install disc?). I'm just wondering if it will give me the option of installing from the DVD drive once the ssd is installed and blank.  ??
    6. Is there anything else I should consider migrating to my new ssd?
    I think that's it.  Thanks!!

This maybe too late, but here it goes:
    1. Do I upgrade/downgrade efi?
    - do not mess about with that. I have a mid 2009 MacBook Pro and am running 2x SSD drives inside without a problem. Only look in to EFI upgrading if the Negotiated Link Speed in System Information (Under Sata) is not reported as 3 Gigabit but rather as 1.5, once you install the SSD
    2. Do I enable/disable trim? (Read in other discussions)
    - some people report advantage from trim being enabled. I've personally noticed lockups during shutdown so keep it off. Typical SSD these days have grabage collection, but it is up to you in the end of the day.
    3. I am currently running 10.6.8 and wanted to purchase the newest OS possible to install.
    - don't purchase anything and download Mavericks for free, battery life will improve
    4. I also purchased an 8gb ram upgrade over the current 4gb ram to do at the same time.  Don't I have to reset something once I power the MBP back up to recognize the ram?
    - the mac will recognise the ram anyway. You should however rest SMC see: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    - yes by inserting the Disk in to the optical drive and holding 'C' during startup wil take you to the boot options, where you can format the SSD drive and install the OS
    - advantage of OS on USB is faster install (quicker read speed) and for those people like me who substituted the optical drive for another HDD or SSD.
    6. Is there anything else I should consider migrating to my new ssd?
    - depending on your previous HDD size (and file sizes - looks like you have lots of photos and videos), make sure you watch what files you are bringing over as you can quickly run out of space on the SSD. You can use OmniDiskSweeper for example, to tell you wat files on your disk use the most space etc.
Hope this helps. And I am sure someone else will come up withh more suggestions

  • Integrated GPU (or driver) fails on built-in screen only: Mid 2009 MBP 15

    Hello All,
Long time reader, first time poster.  Thanks in advance for your valuable time helping with this strange issue.
    Note:
This MBP uses dual GPU's, but does not feature automatic graphics switching; graphics switching is either accomplished by logging out or launching GFXCardStatus.  GFXCardStatus was not installed prior to this problem presenting.
    Symptoms:
I first noticed this problem recently while on battery power, disconnected from all external devices, when I tried to switch to the integrated GPU from the discreet Nvidia GeForce 9600M.  At this point, I was on Yosemite 10.1 installed fresh from the app store two months previously (reformat done to use the SSD's hardware encryption).  When I logged out, the display went black immediately, but the backlight was still on.  I restarted, reset NVRAM and the SMC, and held option key on startup to attempt simply to get the grey screen, but still had no action on the display except for the backlight.  At that point I hooked the laptop up to my Cinema Display and voilá, I could see the usual login screen.  I immediately switched back to the discreet GPU, and both the built-in and external displays worked properly.  The problem is perfectly duplicable; on the integrated GPU, only the external display is responsive.  With discreet GPU, the built-in display works fine every time.  It had been a long time since I remembered using the integrated GPU.
Console revealed that XPC was unable to find display 0x00001 (invalid address).  A number of other posts have described XPC issues with other MBP's using dual graphics and Yosemite, but all of the other threads described being unable to connect to external displays; this is the first case, to my knowledge, of the XPC problem interfering with the built-in display.
Also, the MBP built-in display works fine when booted into safe mode.  It appears that the MBP is using the integrated GPU when in safe mode.  I reviewed all of my extensions and startup items, and it appeared only that the Realtek wireless drivers were loading a third-party (non-Apple-supplied) kext.  Removing the Realtek extensions made no difference.
I changed Colorsync color profiles for the built-in display using while running on integrated GPU to no effect.  My next step will be to reinstall from scratch and see if the problem is fixed, but given the implied low level of the problem (it appears to be related to the drivers or SMC) I think that fix isn't guaranteed.  With driver files not being available by themselves though, a reinstall may be my only option.  Oh yes: Apple Diagnostics lists no problems.  Permissions repair and Disk Repair have been ineffective.  Also, the OS still lets me drag things over to the built-in display when both the built-in and external displays are active; in Displays preference panes, things look normal except for the fact that the built-in display is all black.
Updating to Yosemite 10.2 made no difference.
    Thanks again for reading!
    Gar

It is most definitely recurring as I cannot reach the OS by any means. Tried resetting the PRAM also, starting via recovery disk also leads to an automatic restart. In all cases the Apple logo can bee seen with the progress indicator running. At one point it stops, and restarts itself. The machine can only be used in target disk mode.

  • Upgrade or replace mid-2009 MBP for 4 year doc program

    My question:
I'm new to this forum - thanks in advance for your help!
I love my 5 year old MBP, and I loved the one I had for 5 years before it. I assumed I would buy a new one for this doctoral program that starts in 10 days, which I expect will take 3-4 years to complete. I am flummoxed by what Apple has done with the MBP line (SSD drives with tiny storage capabilities, retina displays I worry will prompt massive storage needs as apps upgrade to take advantage of them, and most offensively the soldering of HD and RAM to the motherboard), and really questioning whether any of the machines they are now selling will be useful to me during my 4 years at school. I am leaning toward buying the maxed out version of the last non-retina model while I still can.
Should I upgrade my existing machine (hard drive, OS, what else?) or buy that last MBP model that isn't soldered shut before they discontinue it (and maybe upgrade it anyways)? Will the new machine be significantly better, or even more upgradeable, than my current one?
Concerns that make me hesitate to buy a new machine:
Hard drive size and upgradability: This is by far the biggest issue. My current machine's hard drive is overloaded and I think that's the biggest problem for performance right now. I refuse to pay through the nose for a way-too-small (smaller?!), non-upgradable, hard drive, no matter how fast it loads entertainment apps. This is my only computer and I will not carry around a separate storage drive. The retina machines are not an option for me for this reason (I'm also anxious about the upcoming storage demands for apps with retina capabilities). I made peace with the idea of having a separate external optical disc drive, but that's pretty awkward when I want to watch a movie in bed or on a plane!
What has the MBP lost since 2009?: I think I read something about the current MBP model not having speakers - I love my speakers! They aren't necessary to do my schoolwork, but I love them just the same. What else has disappeared on the MBP since 2009? I'm paranoid that I may have missed other changes since it's been so long since I paid attention to the product line.
Value for the money: If I'm going to spend $1,300+ on a machine I expect significantly better performance. I can't tell if the newer machine with it's faster (though not as fast as the retina machines) processor will be much faster, or much better in general. Buying it basically saves me the trouble of figuring out all of the details for how to upgrade my current machine, which is worth a lot to me. But will the new machine really be better? How so? By how much? Will I be able to upgrade it in the future beyond what Apple offers now (1TB hard drive/512 GB SSD), OSx Mavericks, 8GB RAM, Intel Core i7)? If it is really going to be better or offer more longevity, I'll snatch one up in a heartbeat, because I expect it will be a couple years before those SSDs are big enough to satisfy me. And I'll let Apple max it out for me for $300 because it will save me the trouble of doing so while I'm preparing for school.
Retina second thoughts: Am I crazy for not wanting the retina machine? Maybe I should wait for the SSD to come down in price so one of those machines are more practical (though still not upgradable?!). Or even get one with 512 GB SSD and plan to upgrade in 2 years?
Refurbished option: Should I look for a refurbished non-retina 15" MBP? I like the 13" screen, but think there were bigger upgrade options on the last 15" one.
    About my current machine:
I bought my baby new in 2009 for my master's program and he has been incredibly good to me. My only regret now is that I didn't upgrade to the fastest processor at that time - if I had I wouldn't be posting this because I'd just be upgrading. He started slowing down around 2011 so I upgraded the RAM, OS, and I think even the Hard Drive (80 to 160GB?), and at that time I got a new battery and power cord due to a recall. 10 months ago I took him in because he had become painfully slow and the Genius re-installed my OS, but I have noticed a bit of that slow-down returning lately. Google Chrome, Google Apps, MS Office, and iTunes are by far my most used apps, but I do like to open a million tabs in Chrome at once while doing research. I value his speakers because I love music but I do have speakers at home so maybe speakers aren't necessary? He has been tossed around quite a bit - I bought him a neoprene sleeve back in the day but never actually used it and he's definitely taken some nasty spills without any protection.
    Complaints about my current machine:
Hard drive storage: My biggest issue is that I had a huge surge in data storage (video and photo for a special project) over the past year and didn't take the time to upgrade his hard drive to make space, so now I have a mess of data in a borrowed iPad and multiple external drives. I want to dump all of that onto the same machine, and it easily fits onto a 1TB external drive, but I do not want to keep it there indefinitely. I like having all of my storage on one machine and I am not ready to buy into the cloud beyond Google Apps. Can I upgrade my hard drive to 1TB or even 500MB? How much does that cost, and what else in my machine will be affected by this change? Should I be looking at SSDs? What are the implications for going that route? Where would it go physically and what would I be giving up?
Speed: He is a little bit laggy sometimes, especially when I open a million tabs on Chrome when I'm researching. I don't switch back and forth between a ton of different programs so startup speed doesn't bother me a ton, but he is a little slow there too.
Battery life: It isn't awesome. It's sufficient but waning for sure.
I spilled water on him: This just happened recently and right afterward I noticed that the track pad is a bit buggy now. It is just a little off of what I expect it to be and sometimes refuses to let me navigate. I haven't tried my wireless mouse since that happened but I imagine that will work fine, and I'm hoping it will go back to normal (open to suggestions to fix that for sure!) soon.
Google Chrome crashes: This has been recent. I've had 20+ tabs open and seen crashes somewhat often. I didn't have this problem before.
He runs hot: I think this is worse since the 2011 upgrades, but honestly doesn't bother me as long as he's safe to use.
He runs loud sometimes: I can hear the fans pick up and kick in sometimes when he's working hard, but it doesn't bother me too much.
Glossy screen is obnoxious: I never bought an anti-glare screen cover to deal with this as I had originally planned. And no, I still don't want a retina MBP.
Possible physical damage from rough handling: I have been rough with him over the years without a case and I worry that he is on his way to some type of physical damage that hasn't shown up yet.

    Whygirl,
it reads as though an internal disk upgrade (and possibly a battery replacement) would suffice for you, and those two together would be far less expensive than a new MacBook Pro. Yes, you could install either a HDD or a SSD in place of its current internal HDD. You could look at the Hitachi Travelstar 7K1000 as an example of a suitable 1 TB HDD; SSDs are more expensive per unit of storage than a HDD, but might be worth the extra cost if your apps are disk-bound. (I put a Samsung 840 PRO into my 13-inch Mid 2010 model, and it’s been working well.) Note that Chrome might be responsible for the extra heat (and the extra heat is responsible for the increased volume from the fans kicking in); Chrome isn’t optimized for use on 64-bit versions of OS X, like 10.8.5.
