Green Screen the easy way

We were in San Francisco today down at Pier 39, a very popular tourist attraction that has many appeals to locals as well.
We were walking from Fisherman's Wharf to Pier 39 and we came across a big green board, angled slightly, and perfectly lit by the mid day sun. I thought it might be fun to take a few photos of people walking past the board and try to key them out when I got home. I believe that is why the board is there. I sat back quite a ways away and used a ISO 200, f5.8, 1/640 sec shot using a 120mm focal length (240 on a 35mm camera)
Here are the pictures:
I took the photos into Premiere Pro and used Ultra to key out the green, and applied a garbage matte to each pic. Pretty easy, I have keyed out the blue sky before, but a green screen lit by sunshine was a new experience.

Yes, there are a lot of buttons. But when you stop to think about what they are, you realize you don't use them all the time. Certainly not while you are shooting. And the reason there are lots of buttons, I think, is because people hated using a menu, so the things that get changed most have buttons.
Let's take the most common button/wheel. The menu button is your friend. You will get to know it pretty well. But you set it up at the beginning of the shoot and seldom go back to it unless something changes, like you want to change the type of video you are saving or the number of photos in a burst. Things like that. You really won't do that as much as I do, because I am still experimenting.
The quick menu button gets used, but still, only when something changes. Not so much while you are shooting.
Pretty much, you turn on the camera that is already set to shoot RAW using full Manual including manual focus, you adjust your aperture and your shutter speed (each has its own wheel) in order to get the on screen exposure meter to go to zero (or a step below), you zoom to where you want to be by turning the lens, you focus and press the shutter button.
Not exactly point and shoot, but I want full control. You may prefer to use one of the program modes. Some people do. Especially run and gun types.
OK, so now you have taken some pictures and you set the camera on the tripod or GorillaPod, use the Wireless button to connect your phone to your camera.  That is a handy button but it isn't like you are pressing it very often.
ISO and White Balance. I pretty much set ISO at 200 and leave it there unless I can't get to the numbers I need with f stop and shutter speed. White balance? OK, that's a different story. There are those days when you are in the sun, in the shade, in the sun, in the shade. On those days the WB gets a bit of a workout.
However, keep in mind you probably have a few settings you use the most often. A sunny day with ISO 200 shooting 16:9 instead of 3:2 or 4:3 because you will be using it for a video. That would make a good preset for one of the buttons you don't use very often. Like the WiFi button perhaps. Using the menu for that is probably sufficient, especially since you don't have a smartphone yet.

  • Is green screen the right way forward?

Hello, I'd appreciate any feedback on this, if anybody has any suggestions. I want to film a subject in a long shot as if they're standing in a large white expanse of nothingness. Should I film them against a heavily lit white background and then extend the whiteness around them in post, or should I film them against a greenscreen and key out the offending colour. I have access to shake, so are there any issues I should be thinking about while filming against green. The actors will all be wearing black dinner suits, I heard this is bad for absorbing some of the green. I'm very new to the whole colour keying thing, so any info will be gladly taken.

Now that you mentioned that you are shooting on the dvx, I would definately recommend using white background. 3 chip cameras are a bit more difficult to key than other mediums like HD or film. You will see some hard lines around your edges, and if there are fly-aways (loose hairs), forget about it. Any movement of the subject will be more detectable on greenscreen as opposed to shooting on white.
I just cut an 8 minute art video that was all shot green screen on the dvx. it worked well, but there were definately some difficult areas.
    Shoot on white!

  • The easy way?

I must admit that this has saved me hours of time and ultimately brought me out of Flash retirement.
    My question is this.
When creating a portfolio with thumbnails as buttons that change a larger image to what the thumbnail displays. Am I doing this right by creating several pages just to make an image appear for each individual image? Seems like allot to me and wondering if there is an easier way to accomplish this.
Also wondering if I should optimize the jpegs in Catalyst?
To see it working its located it www.smakdigital.com
    Thank you.

    Hi Osiris,
    >> I must admit that this has saved me hours of time and ultimately brought me out of Flash retirement.
    Glad to hear it!
    >> Am I doing this right by creating several pages just to make an image appear for each individual image?
Pretty much, yes.  Here are two ways to improve on your approach, however:
Place the thumbnails into a Data List.  This makes it less work to edit things like item spacing/layout, or the selection highlight, since you don't have to do it once per thumbnail image.  To display a different full-size image depending on which list item you clicked, create a series of "On Select" interactions using the "When a specific item is selected" option.
Put your image gallery into a custom component and have one state in the component for each image.  This keeps your list of top-level application pages/states clean, so that if you later decide to add other screens such as contact info, info page, etc., they're not all mixed in alongside your image-specific states.

We here on the Catalyst team agree, and are looking into ways of making this simpler in a future version!
    >> Also wondering if I should optimize the jpegs in Catalyst?
You should definitely optimize your images for the web by adjusting the resolution and compression settings.  You can do this within Catalyst, or within the original tool that you used to create the jpegs (e.g. Photoshop's "Save for Web" command contains all the same optimization controls, and then some).
    Hope that helps!

  • TV Tuner - The Easy Way

If you have ever struggled with that age old question, "How do I get a TV Tuner to work reliably in Linux", I found a great solution that really works for me.
It's called the Viewsonic N5 TV tuner/video processor.  I wrote a brief review of this tuner solution for bsdgangster.org.  For those interested, you can read it here:

  • Image objects following each other--the easy way?

I have a series of images that scroll up the screen. There are 35 or so of them and they follow each other like a filmstrip. I have been creating one layer and copying one motion path for each, staggering them in the timeline. This works great, but it's a drag if I decide to change the timing. I then have to go to each one and move it individually.
    Is there an easier way?

well if your images are a fixed size, it should be too hard to work out the offset for each. But you can move the parent group around as you arrange your images, and then move it back to its start position when you're ready to roll (pun intended).
I liked specialcases solution though, seems tricky to set up if you're unfamilar with the replicator but powerful. And once set up it woul dbe easy to replace the images at any later stage.

  • FAQ: How can I make money in the App Store the easy way?

Suppose I have an app, like a game. It's not very good, I didn't really invest anything, there are a lot better ones out there but I want to make money with it. Are there ways I can do this?
Q: Can I pay an "agency" in India, Russia, China or here in the US to load up my reviews with 5-star ratings for me?
A: Yes, because download volume and star ratings both contribute to your overall score, there are people that provide this service and bump your ratings. These are known as "shills". To use a shill, the app has to be free otherwise it would be too expensive to download and rate. In this case, you will provide your app for free but make your money with in-app purchases.
Q: Do I have to actually deliver in-app materials the customer purchased?
A: You have to deliver "something". Apple will screen for this functionality in the app approval process. However, you can just deliver "virtual cash" that promises to be worth something.
Q: Can I make them to pay extra for delivery?
A: Yes and no. The delivery has to work or it will be caught by Apple's app approval process. However, if you deliver virtual cash instead of real money, you can delay delivery of items purchased with virtual cash and then charge more for delivery.
    Q: Can I require pre-requisite purchases?
A: Yes. You can prohibit the use of purchases until other purchases are made first. You do not need to spell out these prerequisite purchases. This is a modified "bait and switch" scheme.
Q: But won't that get me reported to Apple?
A: No, it can't. Apple doesn't allow customers to "report a problem" for either free apps or in-app purchases. With both methods of reporting blocked, the money goes directly to you without question. The customer has no recourse. Trying to report abuse sends the user to a generic ITunes support page on the web.
Q: Are there ways Apple can thwart these techniques?
A: Yes. But they don't. At least not yet. Here are just a few ways:
Apple can require a price for apps that have in-app purchases. First, the shill services couldn't operate because it would be too expensive. Second, it would give the customer a "report a problem" link that would actually do something.
For free apps that offer in-app purchases, Apple could require an in-app purchase before submitting a review or star rating
or Apple can provide a method for customers to report problems with any of the following:
free apps that support in-app purchases
    in-app purchases themselves
    shill schemes
    or unscrupulous developers
Q: Well, Apple hasn't done any of this, yet. Am I OK until they do?
A: Customers can't report problems to Apple, but they can report problems to their state's Attorney General's office. To do that, they'll have to visit naag.gov, look up their officer's website where they can search for methods of reporting there.

For the iTunes store (this is the iTunes Store) forum then you can log out via the Store drop-down menu at the top of the screen :
The 'Sign Out' option will then change to 'Sign In'. Any content that was downloaded by your father's account will remain tied to his account.
It's similar for the Mac App Store, there should be a Store menu at the top of the screen with a Sign Out option on it, which will then become Sign In.

  • Clearing Duplicates the Easy Way

Due to a rookie consolidation move, I've got duplicates of most of my music in my iTunes Music Folder--all in the same file. The duplicates I'd like to get rid of all have a "1" tacked on to them, like this:
    03 She's Lost Control.mp3 (original)
    03 She's Lost Control 1.mp3 (duplicate)
I'd like to clear up space by removing all of those "1" duplicates, but I've got a ton of music to go through and select. What's the easiest way to select and delete duplicates?

Several ways to Clean Up Your Library by Removing "!" or ‘dead links’ within iTunes:
If you move, edit, delete or otherwise change a music file listed in the iTunes Library with a program or tool other than iTunes, you may end up with a "!" in front of the song name. iTunes does not keep track of music file changes made outside of iTunes.

    EASIER:
    Download this: http://ottodestruct.com/iTunes/RemoveDeadTracks.txt
    Rename it to RemoveDeadTracks.js.
    Run iTunes.
While iTunes is running, double click RemoveDeadTracks.js to run the script.
It will remove all the exclamation marked tracks.
One step, no fuss, no muss.
Then, give Otto42 a big 'Thanks' for this one.

  • What is the easier way to edit a captured slide?

I have created a demonstration animation and there are several slides that need a little graphics editing.
So far, I have not found a way to automate the process of editing slides.
The only method I can determine is by selecting "Copy Background", then opening a graphics editor, pasting to a new window, edit accordingly, save the edited graphic background, import into the slide.
Isn't there anyway to edit inline?.. meaning, the background is automatically sent to your choosen graphics editor, you edit the graphic, click save/exit, and the graphics background is automatically updated. That is how Captivate 4's competitors do it.

    Hi Shawn
It really depends on what exactly you need to do. For example, if all you want is an easy way to blot out some words, use a Highlight Box object at zero percent transparency. Then merge it into the background. Or maybe you need an image added in. Add the image separately and merge it.
Last week we needed to render an option button as unselected. In that case I just right-clicked and opened in Microsoft Paint. Duplicated another and overlaid the errant one. Closed and saved. Total update time from start to finish was less than two minutes.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Trim extra spaces (the easy way)

Sometimes, the fields from my resultset will have extra spaces at the end. Is there an easy way to simply trim the space when selecting a value?
For instance, say there is extra space on this Date field, is there no trim-space type function?
    <xsl:value-of select="Date"/>
    Thanks,
    TI

Oh dear. They have lumped XPath 1.0 and XPath 2.0 functions together there, and they don't specify which is which. Chances are you are only using XPath 1.0, so try this link instead:

  • What is the "easy" way to get to 3.1.2?

I've "loved" the Oracle database for many years, and is thrilled with Apex. I no longer work as a DBA, but tries to keep my technical stuff close.
I have an Apex 2.1 installation on an 10g database on Ubuntu 8.10 server. I did the lazy install then, and installed via aptitude (more or less automated install).
I would like to install 3.1.2, but must admit I almost lost courage when I read the requirements.
My Oracle install right now can be discarded, so I wanted to ask: what is the easiest way for me to get 3.1.2 installed on Ubuntu?
Install the latest version of 11g? Run a magic script, that automates all that Oracle exhaustively describes?
    Thanks in advance
    Yours
    /Kim
End note/rant: given that oracle can describe everything in such details, why oh why, not just build an installer around it?! the chances of errors are multitudes greater with all these nitty gritty commands. My SQL Server DBAs routinely updates, installs and patches SQL Server without much of a hassle. Oracle DBAs gets ticks thinking of the testing needed...

Just to be clear, you're probably running Oracle Express Edition, or "XE" based on the fact that you installed it via aptitude and it has APEX 2.1 pre-installed. It may say 10g when you login, but please refer to it as XE in the forums so people know what db they're dealing with.
There is no "easy" way to magically install 3.1.2. You have to follow the install guide to the letter now matter what path you take. Even if you install 11.1, it only has APEX 3.0 pre-installed. Even though I really prefer 11 to 10, I think your best off sticking with XE, especially since there are no licensing issues. For what it's worth, I've suggested that APEX needs a GUI installer (such as Oracle Universal Installer) for several years now since the install / upgrade process can be a bit daunting. Until the community demands it, I don't think it's going to happen, so please, speak up if you think the install process is too hard.

  • Noob creating GUI - The easy way?

I remember in Visual Basic it was so easy creating GUI, just point and click, drag, etc. Is there any similar utility for creating GUI for java?

It's worth pointing out that 'click-and-drag' isn't the best way. In Java, components may vary in size between platforms. Even in Swing, components sometimes change slightly in size between releases.
You should take the time to learn how to use the layout managers - it will pay dividends in the long run. I would strongly recommend against using JBuilder's GUI builder until you know how to do it properly by hand. I use JBuilder to assist in building complicated GUIs, but if you don't understand the fundamentals behind the layout managers, the results are likely to be erratic and frustrating.

  • Changing energy saver the easy way

Is there an easy way to set schedules on workstations? If I knew which pref file contained this info I could copy out that file no?

    don't know what "pmset" means, the provided unix commands don't quite cover what I want;
start up weekdays at 7:30 a.m., shutdown everyday at 4:00 p.m.
If I knew which prefs file held that data. I thought it was users/me/library/preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
but moving that file around doesn't seem to do it.
If I change the settings manually on a workstation, when logged in as admin, all users inherit this even though prefs file is in admin's own prefs folder.
coping out the file doesn't do anything though, so I'm either doing the wrong file or something is going on way above my head (no doubt)

  • Gstreamer, the easy way

Since I like to have a way to install all gstreamer packages, I thought others might like to have them all displayed and formatted for a quick installation.
All you need is current and extra repo's
    pacman -Sy gstreamer0.10 gstreamer0.10-a52dec gstreamer0.10-aalib gstreamer0.10-alsa gstreamer0.10-amrnb gstreamer0.10-annodex gstreamer0.10-bad gstreamer0.10-base gstreamer0.10-bz2 gstreamer0.10-cairo gstreamer0.10-cdio gstreamer0.10-cdparanoia gstreamer0.10-dts gstreamer0.10-dv gstreamer0.10-dv1394 gstreamer0.10-dvdread gstreamer0.10-esd gstreamer0.10-faac gstreamer0.10-faad gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg gstreamer0.10-flac gstreamer0.10-gconf gstreamer0.10-gdkpixbuf gstreamer0.10-gnomevfs gstreamer0.10-good gstreamer0.10-hal gstreamer0.10-jpeg gstreamer0.10-ladspa gstreamer0.10-lame gstreamer0.10-libcaca gstreamer0.10-libpng gstreamer0.10-libvisual gstreamer0.10-mad gstreamer0.10-mms gstreamer0.10-mpeg2dec gstreamer0.10-musepack gstreamer0.10-neon gstreamer0.10-ogg gstreamer0.10-pango gstreamer0.10-pitfdll gstreamer0.10-python gstreamer0.10-sdl gstreamer0.10-shout2 gstreamer0.10-sidplay gstreamer0.10-speex gstreamer0.10-swfdec gstreamer0.10-taglib gstreamer0.10-theora gstreamer0.10-ugly gstreamer0.10-vorbis gstreamer0.10-xvid

It depends on the apps that you use. If you use a media player that use it (like listen in community repo), to play a certain file type, you need to have the corresponding plugin installed.  I assume that the advantages are that it's more lightweight and there are probably other reasons (performance?) that I'm not aware of.  Maybe the developers of  multimedia apps find it easier to use gstreamer than the default way.

  • Is there such a thing as "the easy way to access my Time Capsule"??

Ok I'm totally new to Mac and I feel totally daft! I can't seem to figure out how to access my TimeCapsule from wherever I am in the world..... I read guides, I look at the manual but I am still totally lost! Can sameone please walk me through this, step by step, in a EASY way??

Don't feel daft.. the fundamental principle of access from external location is a bit strange..
But there are lots of posts about it.. look up remote access time capsule.
Before I can give you simple info on how to set this up. I need some info..
Does the TC get the public IP on the wan interface?
For this to work in the simplest way.. the TC must be the only router in the network and handling WAN to LAN of your network.
Once you do that. Find out the public IP of the TC.. you will see that on any site that reveals your public ip but it should also be available in the TC.
In the setup of the TC via airport utility go to manual setup disk file sharing.. and check for wan access and give the TC disk a password.
In the Mac you carry around.. from a real internet connection not the one your TC is connected to,
Open finder.. top menu.. go, go to server.
    Type in AFP://ipaddressofTC
You will then be asked for password which you will have to give..
Tell us the info and if it worked.
