Green static or sparkles with aTV.

I just got an aTV for Christmas and have it hooked up to a Vizio LCD 1080p HDTV through a 5.1 surround receiver.  I also have a blu-ray player and DirecTV receiver run through the same receiver via HDMI.  Initially, I had the aTV plugged directly into the back of the LCD to try it out and had no issues.  When I got it hooked up through the receiver, I noticed green static or sparkles in the picture (especially noticeable in the black areas.  There was no static with the blu-ray or DirecTV, just the aTV.  I played  around with the video settings and when the aTV was set to 720p, the static was gone.  As of now, I must either sacrifice sound quality or picture quality to get rid of the static.  I shouldn't have to settle.  Any ideas?

Well, I tried a brand new cable just to be sure and it didn't solve the problem. I'm having a hard time believing it's the receiver since all the other components are fine. The blu-Ray and the satellite box have no issues. I've unplugged the cable from the back of the blu-ray and plugged it into the aTV and the static is there. That tells me that the problem is in the aTV. I have updated the software. Is there anything else I can try?

  • Getting green screen/no video with ATV- Onkyo AVR

Problem:  When I turn on AppleTV, I get a solid green screen on my television display. Apparently it is only a problem with the video signal, as the audio still works.
I have just started experiencing this problem.  For the past 2 years, it has worked fine.  I turned on ATV to listen to music the other day and there was the green screen.  I changed nothing prior to this.
    Setup:
ATV Gen 3   -->   AVR Onkyo TX-NR609  -->   LG LED LCD Television (47”)
Troubleshooting shows that the ATV works fine when plugged directly into the LG TV HDMI port, so I’m assuming that rules out the ATV box itself and the HDMI cable.  Also, the HDMI cable works fine when used with another component (DVD player).
When the green screen is displayed, I can play a YouTube video from my iphone via Airplay and hear the audio but not see the video.
DirectTV and DVD player work fine through the AVR and TV.
When ATV is initially turned on, the Apple logo is displayed for a few moments, then disappears and the green screen appears.
I have tried resetting ATV.  I have turned off entire system and turned it back on.  I have the latest firmware on the LG TV.
Any idea what I can do to fix this?   Thanks.

    Change the Apple TV resolution:
Press and hold the Menu and Up button on your Apple Remote for six seconds.
The Apple TV will automatically cycle to the next resolution at approximately 20 second intervals.
Press Play on the Apple Remote to keep the current resolution or Select to manually cycle to the next resolution.
Try a different HDMI port on the receiver, if this has not been tried already.
Contact Onkyo for assistance, their may be a firmware update for the receiver.  Although this would not explain why it worked previously and now is not working properly.
Also, see if there is a way to reset the receiver to a factory "out of the box" state to clear up any settings issues on the receiver that may be causing the issue.

  • Green / static screen with iDVD playback?

I get a green static screen (sound is okay) when I burn discs from iDVD 7.1.2 on to DVD Rs.  This green/static screen happens when I play back on my iMac and on a Blue Ray DVD player.  I've disabled the "sleep" function that was an issue on earlier iDVDs.  I have a 2 year old iMac.  How do I fix this?  Thank you.

    I could have guessed.
    • Memorex a notorious problem maker - I only use Verbatim (More organic dye in this = Better)
    • DVD+R is a more modern type - but works on fewer DVD-Players (Blu-Ray-players seems to be more picky) - I use DVD-R (only)
    • As You don't mention Burn Speed - My guess is that You've not done nothing to it so if You use x16 DVDs then iDVD tries to burn it as this = Many Burn Errors = Play's badly or on fewer players
    • Keep NTSC from Camera to final DVD = Better than changing in iMovie or iDVD - if You must do this use JES_Deinterlacer (free and gives near top result - alt. costs astronomical and gain in view barely visibly.
    • Best Performance - most often are not - I only use Pro Quality (only for movies < 45 minutes in total (menu included) - Best Performances can do better)
iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (version 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1) and iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST (but not always for short movies e.g. up to 45 minutes in total)
    • Best Performances
(movies + menus  less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD (Can be best for short movies)
    • High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6)
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
Menu can take 15 minutes or even more - I use a very simple one with no audio or animation like ”Brushed Metal” in old Themes.
    About double on DL DVDs.
    • 16 x 9 = OK - I've done too
    • SL-DVD - Yes 100% only DL became a coaster (disaster) to me
    • Size - 3,78Gb - DOESN'T Guarantee anything - iDVD Only Cares about DURATION - Movie time PLUS Menu Time (Menu can be 15 minutes or even more). I have movies on 500Mb that DO NOT FIT and on 50Gb that fit's nicely. Only Duration !
Also important is - free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk - I never go under 25Gb free space to let iDVD and Mac OS work OK. Free space on other hard disks of NO Importance as this use for temp. files can not be addressed elsewhere.

  • To those of you suffering with ATV

This is my story that might help some of you...
My colleague and I each bought an Apple TV two weeks ago and had very different experiences.
I plugged mine into my network and it worked immediately, syncing with my Alu iMac on 10.5.4
    His, however, was another story.
We spent a whole week experiencing all the issues mentioned in this forum...
Sync then disappears, Invisible, port3689 error and so on
We went through all the usual stuff and still no luck until I went around there on Saturday determined to make the frickin thing work beore my colleague lost the plot.
His imac is a bit older than mine, the white intel one, by the way.
He had upgraded to 10.5.4, iTunes7.7, etc etc
I went through everything, router settings, etc etc then it started to click into place
Downloaded Bonjour browser and saw that there was a TCP entry for Itunes-ATV but not one for the ATV itself (on my system there were two TCP entries) so i reasoned that the problem was the Bonjour service
Also, no ping on ATV IP address from iMac.
I reasoned that the Bonjour service has been corrupted by a previous version of iTunes so even though he was on 7.7 we cleared it out completely, downloaded it again and fresh installed and reboot, all the while with ATV on ethernet to router.
On reboot and itunes restart there it was in the devices list, whoop! and indeed there were two TCP entries on Bonjour browser, and it started to sync, I then unplugged the ethernet and it also continued on wireless.
At time of writing, 24hrs later, even following a power cut, it is still on the devices list and syncing, my colleagues is considerably happier with life.
I think a previous version of iTunes or upgrade corrupted his Bonjour services and, try everything else as we did, it was never going to work unless that was resolved.
I hope this is of some help to some of you who are struggling with ATV. I really think that most of what is said about these issues are red herrings, for those that have tried everything else, I am convinced Bonjour service is at the root of the problem.
Good luck, because it's a great bit of kit when it is working and I am really enjoying mine.
And come on Apple, I shouldn't have to be resolving my friends technical support issues with your products!
    Cheers
    Vin

I just wanted to respond to this thread one more time to note that everything seems to be working fine for me, now. I put all the suggestions here to use, but I went well beyond that, because things still weren't working.
My computer was constantly locking up, with the Dock freezing and the Time Capsule not doing its thing. After running Tech Tool and Disk Warrior, things still weren't right on my G4, and much the same on my wife's iMac.
I took the somewhat drastic step of reinstalling the original Leopard OS on both computers, then did all the updates to the latest versions. I reconfigured the wireless network with Time Capsule, too, but it still wasn't working right. Further digging around the Apple Support site led me to a very recent Airport update that I didn't know about, and that my Software Update didn't recognize. After installing this update (June 2008), the Time Capsule seemed out of commission for good, but it churned and churned, finally showing a green light. I then used the Airport Utility and set up the Airport Express, and all was finally well.
Now, the ATV syncs like it should, fairly quickly, and my wife's iMac is able to access the 'net at normal speeds.
I don't know absolutely what fixed everything, but I think the Time Capsule (Airport) update was crucial in my case, and I don't think it hurt to reinstall Leopard on both computers (which would also reinstall iTunes, for those who were considering doing that, as suggested by Vincent.
I really hope others who are having troubles will reach a similar level of success. ATV is such a neat device, and it really should be so much simpler to get it to work.

  • Remote App on iPad not working with ATV

The remote app on my iPad (1st gen) was working fine with ATV last week. I noticed when using ATV there was a message about updating the ATV to a new version. I skipped the update each time as I just wanted to watch the program. However, we recently had a power outage which caused the ATV to shut down and I'm assuming launched the update as I didn't see the update message last night. However, I'm not able to use my iPad remote app with ATV any longer. When the remote app launches it indicates that it connected and it sees both ATV's. Yet, there is no ability to control the ATV. My iPhone 4S does not have this problem; It still works perfectly. I also have an iPad 2 and 3 and will check that shortly. Does anyone know for sure if the recent updates caused iOS 5.0 users to loose functionality?
    Thanks,
    Jeff

iOS 7.0.3 did not fix the mirroring issue with ATVs and AirServer.  Anyone have an idea what needs to be done?  The only solution we have found is to reboot the iPad.  We don't have the option of restarting the wireless as so many people are on and it would further disrupt classes.

  • Day 2 with ATV, may need advice.

iPhoNettie wrote:Apple Genius-tried syncing thru ethernet cable
I need to know if this is possible with ethernet cable only between ATV/MacPro vs Airport wireless.
I've spent hours with this 32gb ATV to just load and it's been nothing but long hours.
One trick that will not work.
Macpro is mainly using ethernet cable to the wireless access 24/7.
    I leave his airport off.
I'm on day two of the first attempt at using ATV, it has been sitting for a year never used.
This all started yesterday with a members advice using ATP, vs iPhone connected to RXv3900.
    What a Great iDea.
I turned Airport on the MacPro. Not sure why I did. In the end, you need to.
Plug in ATV, and started in last night. Noticing it's Quite slow on Airport.
Discovered there is no real-time status of the load you checked/selected in iTunes to know if it's too much.
Sure enough at present, the 5th time of de-selecting is to make room again.
At 50 something, we have a set logic that's hardened.
If dishwasher is full & ready, do you unload/reload complete to add one item?
    Apparently Apple does.
There maybe an update that is needed.
It's not showing up by default or where to access if there is.
ATV finally finished with 8.5Gb free. I'll see if update is found.
Still very reluctant to do update with ATV actually working.
Getting to the chase here, can ATV & MacPro be direct linked w/ethernet cable?
One test I just tried while ATV was loading again, I shut Airport off on the MacPro.
ATV immediately disconnected from iTunes. Whoops.
My test was to see if ATV would still get through to Mac wirelessly by accessing wifi MacPro is wired to. Nope.
Is this telling me I don't need Comcast's wifi to connect the 2? ATV/MacPro only for loading ATV.
Can ATV connect it's path directly to MacPro's Airport? Skipping Comcast's wifi.
I guess my final question is/ can ATV connect to MacPro with only angry twisted copper wire?
Also, is there any advantage with MacPro on ethernet cable and Airport on at the same time?
I see no results either way.
I hope my versing is with some accuracy.
I'm not up on the latest politically correct lingo.
For sure of one thing, a 1Tb drive is on it's way for a new mission.
For the first time, I'm viewing trailers on ATV, and I have Airport shut off on MacPro.
This is good. I was afraid up to this point.
    Thanks'

Yes they should provided you've registered the AppleTv to sync with iTunes on the Mac Pro account - do you remember setting AppleTV to connect to iTunes by entering a 5 digit code in iTunes from AppleTV?
Yes, I have performed all the loading of ATV by wireless from iTunes from the MacPro.
This simple ethernet connection should just work to sync from previous reports.
This will be great. The main reason is to take ATV to the cabin or shop with no internet access.
This should work if all you're doing is syncing and then putting the AppleTv back where you want to use it.
However, if you want to connect by ethernet all the time, then the direct connection to the Mac Pro will not allow AppleTV to access the internet for various store/photo/YouTube features or to authorise playback of some iTunes Store material/rentals etc, unless you've configured internet sharing over the Mac Pro ethernet port and the Mac Pro is connected to the internet either via it's other ethernet port or wireless.
Thank You, it's not a priority to access these features with ATV.
Your best bet is to have AppleTv connect to a router to see the internet itself and to see the Mac Pro on the local network.
Great, and I really appreciate your quick reply.
    Have a Great Day.

  • Sync problems with ATV per HDMI and optical out

Have some sync problems with ATV (actual), TV is connected via HDMI, sound goes over optical cable into DAC (Rega) and then to the amplifier, when using only TV-sound everything is fine, switching to the external speakers brings up a little delay, around 1/10 second. Any chance to fix this?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
I believe this delay is caused by the DAC, I don't think there is anything you can do about this.

  • Synching Internet Radio Stations Playlist with ATV - Doesn't always work!

I'm having some challenges with ATV Take 2 and itunes 7.6.1 to synch a playlist that contains internet radio stations. I can get it to work when I first sync ATV to iTunes, but then within a few hours, the playlist does not remain synched, and when accessed through ATV, it gives a message to the effect that "there are no songs in this playlist". The only way to fix the problem is to re-synch ATV, which is a pain.
Has anybody successfully set up a playlist containing internet radio stations in iTunes and managed to keep it synched in ATV Take 2?

I am having the same problem. This is one of the features that I was really excited about

  • My Wifi turns off when trying to sync Itunes with ATV

I have just brought an ATV and have the up to date software on everything. When trying to sync my itunes library with ATV after 45 mins -90 mins i lose my wifi connection on everything (mac computer, apple tv, iphone) this has not happened before I got the Apple TV and I have always have a strong and perfect connection, even when I am syncing itunes & ATV it is perfect for the first 45 mins.
I have tried resetting the ATV to its factory settings and switching all other devices off when syncing. this hasn't worked.
I would appreciate some help on this and some instructions on how to solve this in dummy form.

without knowing the make/model of your router, then no.
and even then, unless someone here has that specific router, then we can't give you a 100% step-by-step instructions for doing it.

Anyone had static / background crackles with these speakers sometimes its quite loud...disappears for several days then reappears. The first three months I had no problems now this on/off problem.
All the cables are plugged in firmly. Could it be outside interference or something 'loose' inside? Any opinions welcome..Cheers

    1. Make sure you're not distorting.
    2. Make sure you are grounded properly.
    3. Make sure power cables aren't parallel to speaker cables.

  • Can Movies and TV series purchased with iTunes be viewed with ATV?

Yes, they can. You can view them either through Home Sharing via your iTunes library or you can stream them from the iTunes Store buttons on the ATV home menu (Movies, TV Shows).

  • Replace "static" Entitlement banner with "slideshow" Entitlement banner in html implementation of default library v3

I'm currently in the process of updating an existing Enterprise DPS App. I'm using the online "DPS Configurator" to create an updated iOS7-style HTML implementation of the default library (v3). I also want to implement the DPS Configurator's Slideshow entitlement banner. Is there any documentation on replacing the static entitlement banner with slideshow entitlement banner for the custom HTML implementation? Or is it one or the other? If I can incorporate both, do I have to manually replace static with slideshow banner in code (via DreamWeaver) or will it replace when I go to App Builder. I should also mention that this isn't a true entitlement App, I'm just using Ivan Mironchuck's article... Adding HTML banners to non-entitlement apps | Adobe Developer Connection "fake out" technique to include an entitlement banner in the first place on existing v1 of our current app. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your quick reply Derek. My follow up question is how is TopGear Magazine achieving the iOS7 look on their library along with what looks like the slideshow Entitlement banner? Am I over-thinking things here? If I simply want the brighter iOS7 look for my library is Viewer v31 like this right out of the box then?

    My bad?
You're original response was questions/post  about an iMac. Now you've edited it to ask about a Mac Pro?
You can more easily add internal drives in a Mac Pro.
Not too terribly easy to add/replace drives in an iMac.
If younhave questions about a Mac Pro, try posting in the Mac Pro forums.
