Greens from my Nikon D800 are way over saturated and too bluish  14 bit NEF

Greens from my Nikon D800 are way over saturated and too bluish 14 bit NEF uncompressed files. I have no problem with raw files from other cameras is there a setting I am missing somewhere?

Hi,
I have been shooting my D800 for over a year now, and I have not observed what you are discussing, particularly in outdoor, natural light situations.
I have downloaded your NEF, and imported it into Aperture (3.4.5).  I notice two things right away:  1) you are using Uncompressed NEF, 14 bit recording;  and 2) you seem to have a custom White Balance.  The former should be of no matter, but would be interested if you have been able to discern any advantage over Lossless Compression, 14 bit?
However, the important concern is with the Custom White Balance impact on the rendering of NEFs in RAW in Aperture.  I am planning to do a study of this, and am wondering if you could test your resutls in similar shots with Auto White Balance rather than any preset (yours or the camera standard presets)?
I by practice only shoot Auto White Balance (and RAW), but recently I have found benefit to using a preset WB when shooting video since that result will not be modifiable later on the computer.  After doing this, I have sometimes forgotten to reset the WB to Auto before again shooting stills in RAW, and the resulting difference vs once reset has been curious.
While it is well known that Picture Controls when used and shooting RAW will likely result in wide differences between the Camera Preview and Aperture's first rendering, I am less certain what the dynamics of White Balance settings and first rendering in Aperture.
Thanks for the test image and chance to discuss this.

  • Cannot open a raw file from my Nikon D800,,,i have downloaded every and i mean every version of raw

i am up to raw 8.3,,still getting an error message,,,frustrated,,,but still shooting in Tiff,,,would love to see a raw file open

Unreadable on my computer. I also use a D800, so I know my computer can read them.
Opening it up in a binary editor, I see the magic words "Nikon Transfer 1.1", which you've already been asked about twice.
You need to update this software, or use something else. Old versions of Nikon Transfer are known to corrupt recent Nikon cameras' files.
    Read these:

for info on updating or disabling it.
You will need to download the raw files from the cards again, once you've fixed the problem.
Personally, I stick my cards in a card reader and use Adobe Photodownloader, which is part of Bridge (which comes with Photoshop).

  • DNG doesn't recognize raw files from my Nikon D800

When I open DNG (v 7.1.0.354) and go to the folder my raw files are in the files are "grayed out." The files came from a Nikon D800. I want to use the files in Photoshop 5 (v 12.0 x64.) The camera raw plug-in currently inside Photoshop 5 is v 6.0.0.205.
    Advice ?

Your camera is on the list of supported cameras for the latest DNG converter. It is also on the list of supported cameras for Camera Raw 6.7, which was the last update for Photoshop CS5. I cannot confirm that support because I don't have a D800. Is the DNG converter that you have the release candidate or the beta version that was out at one time? You might check for the latest updates and see if that makes a difference. I would also recommend that you update to Camera Raw 6.7.

  • Can't open NEF files from my Nikon D800

I am running Mac OX 10.6.8, Photoshop 13.6.1 x64, Camera Raw 7.1.0354 and Lightroom 4.4.
Now Camera Raw and Lightroom won’t open raw files from my Nikon D800. Why is this!??!?
My iMac is model year 2006 and can't be upgraded to Mavericks (thank you Apple!)

1.— First, be glad your machine can't run the extremely buggy Mavericks OS.
2.—Did you mean Photoshop 13.0.6 ?  There's no such thing as Photoshop 13.6.anything.
3.— The current version of ACR is ACR 8.4.  You should ALWAYS update to the latest version.  Once a camera model is supported, it will be supported in all subsequent releases of ACR.
Beside new camera support, each ACR update contains any number of unannounced, unheralded bug fixes, improvements and enhancements.

  • I have LR2 but not able to access nef files from my Nikon D800

Unable to access nef files from my Nikon D800.

You need Lightroom 4.1 or later (the current version is 5.7.1 but will not run on Windows Vista or XP and certain Mac operating systems, if that's an issue)
You could also download the FREE Adobe DNG Converter version 7.1 or later and convert your RAWs to DNG and import those into your Lightroom 2.

  • Will Photoshop Elements 11 and Lightroom 4 support conversation of RAW files from a Nikon D800?

I'm currently using Photoshop Elements 9 and must convert RAW files from my Nikon D800 to .dng files before processing using a added converted.  I'm considering upgrading to either Elements 11 or Lightroom 4 but want to know if either of these programs will support the nikon D800 RAW files without having to go through this extra cumbersome step.   Additionally, if I do go with Lightroom 4, will the transition be easy or difficult and what problems might I encounter?

Yes the D800 is fully supported in both applications.
You would certainly benefit in processing your 36mp raw files using Lightroom if you have a 64bit PC or Mac with additional memory (RAM). The Lightroom develop module is where you do all the editing and you get the benefit of the full CS6 raw engine in an intuitive interface.
If you regularly use the Elements Organizer you should understand Lightroom quite easily.
Why not download the free trial of LR4 and test for 30 days.

I am having trouble opening .nef raw files from a nikon d800 in elements 9.
I have tried to update ACR to the latest version but can not tell if this has been successful
I just get the message "wrong type of file"

For the D800 you have two alternatives:
    (1) Upgrade to PSE 11. (2) Download and install the free Adobe DNG converter to convert your raw files to the Adobe universal Raw format and the files will open in all versions of PSE (keep your originals as backups and for use in the camera manufactures software)
Windows download click here DNG Converter 7.3
Mac download click here DNG Converter 7.3
You can convert a whole folder of raw images in one click. See this quick video tutorial:

TRy to close itunes by double tapping the home button then slide up all of the open apps and try again.
another option is to turn off your ipad, logout from your itunes account and try again downloading the movie. If it still gives you error, call apple support and ask for itunes agent to see if there is something wrong with the movie you are trying to download

  • Over saturated and contrast with previews in Aperture 3.4.5

When I import photos from my Nikon D700 I import both RAW and JPEG with RAW as the master. The initial previews are great, but as soon as aperture updates the preview it becomes over saturated with too much contrast. I have tried post import processing with both Aperture and Camera presets with the same result. I have followed other similar threads that go into the technical details of what a preview is, this is fine, but what I want to know is what I'm doing that stops me from keeping the original good preview image. Can anyone tell me exactly where the initial preview was generated adn how to keep it?
    Cheers
P.S. i have temporarily disabled this terrible change by toggling 'P'

Can anyone tell me exactly where the initial preview was generated adn how to keep it?
    Haggy72,
as you have seen the many threads on previews, I am sure, you know already, that the initial preview is the preview generated by your camera. It reflects all raw processing and all effects set in your camera, but it does not show, what the unprocessed raw image is like.
Aperture will create a preview, that is showing excatly, how the raw image will look, without any edits applied.  When you are using the raw as original image file, it is necessary, that the preview (and the thumbnail) will show you the raw image as it is. How else are you to know, what edits will be necessary to create the image you want?
if you want to keep the original, camera generated preview, use the jpeg as original image file. That image is a high resolution version of the preview you like.

  • RAW NEF files imported into Aperture from a Nikon D70 are dark

I imported one roll of images straight from the CF card from my Nikon D70 into Aperture.
I also imported them into Nikon PictureProject. (the current application I use)
All the NEF's in Aperture are darker than the NEF's in PictureProject. Has anyone else seen this issue?
Also, any NEF that I have previously edited and saved in Nikon Capture Editor, do not display any of the changes when imported into Aperture. Interesting that the Finder shows the thumbnail correctly. Has anyone else seen this issue?
    Thanks, Scott K.

I've imported a few of the NEF files I've gotten from my D2X, and for the most part, they look fine. A little darker than when displayed in Adobe Bridge and ACR, but not that much darker. This is probably just the way the image converter is interpreting the RAW data. A couple of minor levels adjustments for me, and they look fine.
As for Aperture not "seeing" the changes made to a RAW file in Nikon Capture. That may be due to the way Capture applies its changes to the file. If when you make a change, Capture simply adds the adjustments to a side car file, etc., and doesn't change the original RAW file (which it should never do), then Aperture is only reading the original RAW data. The side car info is not understood by Aperture. At least not now.
This is pretty much the same way ACR works.

  • The web pages are not centered, they are way over to the right and so not only can I not see the page, I can't see the scroll bar or web address.

It is like the page shrinks up and moves way over to the right hand corner and I can't pull it back. I tried mini and maxi -ing the screen ... nothing works!!!
I cant' move the page down to see what the directions are for this box so I am typing this and hoping for the best. Sometimes the arrows will scroll down and other times not.

    Hi Mike ...
If you haven't tried a different DNS, OpenDNS may help.
Use OpenDNS for better speed, more security, includes anti phishing filters, prevents browser redirects, it's free and Apple suggests it here >  Safari 5.0.1 or later: Slow or partial webpage loading, or webpage cannot be found
Open System Preferences / Preferences then select the Network tab. Click the Advanced tab then click the DNS tab.
    Click +
Enter these addresses exactly as you see them here.
    208.67.222.222
    Click +
    208.67.220.220
    Then click OK.
Quit then relaunch Safari to test.
Mike, empty the Safari cache more often. From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Empty Cache
