Greenscreen in Imovie HD 6.03

Okay, maybe I'm stupid, but i can't find anything in the menus regarding "masking" or "compositing".
I shot an actor against green screen, and now i wanna start messing with it.
Am I completely out to lunch?

Colin,
"Am I completely out to lunch?"
No, not completely.
But you will need some third party plugins to do it.
Gee Three offers in their Slick Volume 4.
http://www.geethree.com/slick/V_04.html
Stupendous offers one as well.

  • How to fit greenscreen in imovie '09

    Hi!
i am using imovie '09. i'm trying to use the greenscreen function and everything works well except for 1 thing.
So there is a small greenscreen in the screen that i am filming. but i want to adjust the size of the video that is playing on the greenscreen. because the picture you are seeing now is only a small part of the original footage (the footage in the greenscreen is the same size as the footage containing the guy. it is only showing the footage there where the green screen is.. Does anyone know how to resize is to excactly fit the greenscreen window?

If you just want a title hanging in mid-air, I would just drag the Centered title over the entire project (the entire clip will turn blue to show where the title is). Highlight the text to change it, then click on *Show Fonts* where you can change the color. Choose a light gray and it will look like a watermark.
Another way to do this is to import a still image over your entire project and set the opacity to low, which gives a watermark or ghost effect.

  • Best datafile management practices for iMovie

I work across two different machines (my desktop and my laptop) on iMovie Projects.  My desktop has nearly all of my video stored on a 6TB external drive, but when I travel and want to bring along a project with me on a  portable 2 TB drive.  And then when I return, I want to be able to move the updated project back to my desktop and the 6 TB drive.
I will want to also be able to bring along all of the related event files so I can add or change video content, if need be.
One of the problems is variious resources tend to disappear (music from my iTunes libary and video clips and or pictures from Aperture)
So my question is what is the best approach to this problem.
    Suggestions?

You are asking really good questions.

Is file management using Final Cut Pro any easier?  How large is the learning curve for Final Cut Pro?
File Management is quite similar in Final Cut Pro X, but you have additional options. The paradigm of Events, Projects, and Archives is the same. You have more ability to use keywords, and more ways to search through your events. You can also rename clips for your convenience. You can't rename clips in iMovie without messing up the date metadata.
The learning curve is fairly large for Final Cut Pro. The basic interface is similar to iMovie, but at every stage you have many options and much more control. At minimum, you would want to get a good book on FCP, and you might invest in some of the video training that is available from Ripple Training or Larry Jordan.
If all you need is to make simple movies of 25 minutes or less, iMovie may be plenty. If you need more, the Final Cut Pro X is a great product.
It might be analogous to going from iPhoto to Aperture and Photoshop. It is doable, but some training helps.
Here are some of the key differences...
    1) iMovie uses Apple Intermediate Codec as the editing codec. Final Cut Pro uses ProRes 422 as the editing codec. (There are also more exotic flavors like ProRes 444, for the times when you need alpha channel in your video).
Apple Intermediate Codec is OK for iMovie, because in iMovie, you will only render a clip once, and the render is done when you Share your project.  Final Cut Pro is capable of making much longer movies with complex effects. You might do multiple renders on a clip, so it is important to have a codec that maintains high fidelity to the original even through multiple renders. ProRes 422 that codec. In addition, Apple Intermediate Codec uses a 4-2-0 colorspace while ProRes uses a 4-2-2 colorspace. I am not an engineer, but this means potentially more accuracy and more colors available.
    2) Final Cut Pro makes it easy to edit with multiple camera angles. Think of a rock video where there is a music track and you cut seamlessly between a wide angle shot, the lead guitar, the singer, and the drummer. This is easy in FCP. It is possible in iMovie, but only with a lot of manual effort.
    3) You have a lot more control over color managment in FCP.
    4) You have a lot more control over audio in FCP. In addition to built in sound editing capablilities, you have all the synthesizers from Logic Pro available to you as well.
    5) In your editing, you have a lot more capability in FCP.
    6) In essence, you can do everything you can do in iMovie, but a lot more, and with a lot more control.
    7) In addition, Final Cut Pro will import your iMovie Project and Events, if you like, and you can contiue editing them in FCP. However, you can contimue to edit them in iMovie as well. And if you do it correctly, it does not take up much more space on your hard drive. In other words, you will have a Final Cut event with a hard link to your physical clips, and you will have an iMovie event with a hard link to the same physical clips. It will look like 2 separate events, but you only use up the space of one event. The only downside of doing this is that you will be editing in Apple INtermdiate Codec.
    8) You can do simple greenscreen in iMovie. In FCP you have full control over making a compositing key and using it as you like.
    9) You can do simple speed changes in iMovie (fast or slow motion). In FCP, you have infinite control over the speed changes and you can select from 4 different modes of blending the frames so they look smooth.
I could go on and on, but that should give you an idea.
Here is the Help manual for FCP, if you want to browse around.

  • In imovie, I have greenscreen clip.  First I want to change background to solid color THEN add a picture within picture.  When I try to stack all 3, I get two but not all three.....help!  thanks!

in imovie 10.0.2, i have a green screen clip.  first i want to change background - solid color probably - but then i'd like to also add a picture within picture along side the video....have attempted to "stack" all three, and can get two out of three but not all three....what's the trick?  thanks!

In iMovie you can only do two at a time. So the work-around would be to do the green screen/change background color part. Then Share this. Then import this piece back into an event. Then add the picture in picture.
In Final Cut Pro X, you could easily do what you are describing.
The main reason is that iMovie does all rendering in one pass. Final Cut Pro X allows multiple renders as you go along, so you can do much more complex effects.

  • Imovie green screen

i just relaized i can use the green screen option on my imovie. I went to prefrences and clicked on advance settigns once i did that everything was fine, however when i returned to my imovie and created a new project and clicked on the footage and wanted to select the advance options  itdid not come up, but what is werid is that it is still set to advance options and i am still able to tag my pictures with keywords (an advance option feature) but when i right click or even click on the image only the standard setting comes up... i have no idea what i am doing differently please help

For greenscreen, you would first shoot some footage before a green background and import it into iMovie.
Now, drag some background footage into an iMovie project. Then drag the green screen footage into your project and drop it on top of the background footage at the point where you want it to start. (It doesn't have to be exact, you can adjust it later.) At this point a pop up menu will appear, and you can choose green screen.
    Good tutorial here. http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/imovie_09_stone.html#green%20screen

  • IMovie and Green/Blue Screen

How do I do a green/blue screen effect in iMovie?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi
    a. You either buy a plug-in from eg:
    Stupendous software http://www.stupendous-software.com
    GeeThree http://www.geethree.com
    cf/x. http://www.imovieplugins.com
    Apple http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/ezediapluginsforimovievol1.html
    http://www.imovieplugins.com/fxhome.html
    b. or You count together the cost of the plug-ins then take a look at FinalCut Express
Where blue/greenscreen is standard and You'll get so much more.

  • IMovie '09 on an eMac!

Almost two weeks ago I got my 1.42 GHz eMac to replace my dead 1.0 GHz model, and one of the things I did with this new one was take advantage of the graphics card being able to support Core Image by following this iMovie '09 hack:
    http://broadcast.oreilly.com/2009/09...erbook-g4.html
So far, iMovie '09 is fully functional on my 1.42 Ghz G4 eMac. It does occasionally slow down a bit, but otherwise it works just like it's supposed to, almost as if I were running it on an Intel-based Mac!
I decided to give this a try, having used iMovie '09 at my college's TV studio on the new 24" iMacs we got last summer. I haven't used iMovie '08 that much (I've toyed around with it a bit at an Apple Store), but in some ways iMovie '09 is better than iMovie HD 6 in terms of editing and features (like the ability to select only parts of clips from the event browser to edit in the project, the YouTube uploader, the real-time transitions and effects, better color correction, picture-in-picture and greenscreen already included, etc.), and in a few ways it isn't (like the lack of some fancy video effects, the funky audio editing, not as good title control).
    Any comments?

  • IMovie 11 with chroma-key and watermarks

I'm new to iMovie. I did attempt to find the answers to the questions below here and on the web. Frankly iMovie so far seems to be pain....
setup for my testing purposes only:
    a) borrowed chroma-key movie from the web
    b) borrowed m4p from the web
I wanted to test my ability to use chrome-key and watermarks in making a short clip using 3 products...Screenflow 4, iMovie, Final Cut Pro X.
    Questions and/or statements:
    1) Green-screen:
Screenflow and Final Cut took about 5-10 minutes with zero knowledge of either...Over an hour with with iMovie and never could make it work.
    2) Watermark:
Aganin 5-10 minutes with Screenflow and Final Cut, with iMove it looks like I could have either keying or watermark, but not both.
Screenflow is SUPER simple and cheep (on sale today for $70), I've seem it 50% off...
Final Cut is OUTSTANDING but super costly for what I wanted to do....Really a great product.
Anyway, here I am with a iMovie and so far it looks like it isn't a fit for me...Anyone know if a way to tweek it to make both chroma-key and watermarking work? I guessing it's just me, but the others seemed so simple.
Attached are screen copies of each...in order below are iMovie, Final Cut Pro X, and the output of Screenflow....
I want to thank those that I borrowed these images from...I will not use them beyond my testing....
    Thanks for any helpfull hints...

iMovie is designed with a very forgiving green screen feature so you can hang a green bedsheet on a wall and get a decent effect. It is designed for people making home movies. Perhaps for this reason, if you have a perfect green key in iMovie, then iMovie might think you used the green on purpose. It expects some variation. When people are doing computer generated graphics, or creating a green background with Photoshop or Keynote or Powerpoint, I suggest using a gradient between close shades of green, rather than a monochromatic green.
If you need sophisticated control of your keying, get FCPX. I am not familiar with Screenflow.
Also, iMovie does all rendering in one pass. This means it cannot do effects that require a render on top of a render. Say you want a greenscreen effect with a watermark on top. That is two renders. This is easy in Final Cut Pro, but not possible in iMovie without jumping through some hoops.
Also for this reason, longer movies should be done in FCPX. What for iMovie would be an immense job requiring huge resources, FCPX can do by chopping it up into bitesize pieces.

  • IMove

"iMovie HD 6, previously distributed with iLife ’06, is available for download for those who have purchased and installed iLife ’08."
Will iMovie HD 6 still/also be available for those who purchase and install iLife '09? I'm on a G4 iMac and so won't be able to use iMovie '09 (nor '08), even after my upgrade to 10.5.x.

    Hi
Who knows. This is a User to User help forum. Very few Apple people are here
(and if so - they probably are not alowed to tell)
We'll have to wait and see.
Not impressed of iM'09 specifications yet though it seems to lack so much
of what's needed to motivate people to come back.
    • EXPORT BACK TO CAMERA - Can't find that this is repaired (standard in iM6)
    • Expanded TimeLine window - No true TimeLine (standard in iM6)
    • No extra video track - but a Picture in Picture function (needs plug-in in iM6)
    • No Audio-tracks with wave-form - but some enhancement is done (standard in iM6)
    • External Plug-ins - Don't find anything about this (standard in iM6)
    • Video Stabilazion - Used a third party plug-in - But nice (needs plug-in in iM6)
    • Better Color-correction - Don't think so (This made me look into FinalCut)
    • Resizing enlarging - Yes, Shrink - Don't think so (This made me look into FinalCut)
    • Slight rotation (part of deg) - Don't think so (This made me look into FinalCut)
    • GreenScreen - Nice improvment (needs plug-in in iM6)(This made me look into FinalCut)
Still to much important functions lacking - that most of it is standard in iMovie HD 6

  • Reflection when exporting green screen to QuickTime in iMove '09

    I am using iMovie '09.
I am exporting a talking head using QT h.264 with best properties. I have overlayed the talking head on a black card background provided by iMovie. I need to import the quicktime film back into iMovie so I can put Picture in Picture on the black and have transitions. However, the greenscreen exports to quicktime with a flipped image above the head, i.e. a reversed neckline and shoulders making an hourglass figure with the talking head middle. Bizarre. Any suggestions on solving this?

+the latest Quicktime for my old PC (P4 2.0) and all I get is a green screen when playing back Quicktime movies+
I'm assuming you've got XP rather than Vista here. If so, try the "Disable Direct3D acceleration in QuickTime" section from the following document:
Troubleshooting iTunes for Windows XP and 2000 video playback performance issues
(If you've got Vista, click the link through to the equivalent Vista article in the first paragraph, and look for the Direct3D acceleration instructions section there.)

  • Greenscreening bug?

When I try to greenscreen on my iMac with iMovie 11, instead of playing the actual clips (greenscreen background AND greenscreen) it plays a snapshot of the clip BEFORE or AFTER depending where you place the headbar.
Please tell me how to fix these soon!

You have to make sure you drop your video or picture on top of, rather than beside your greenscreen clip.  If you did it right a menu (if you have advanced tools enabled) will appear that will include options for blue and green screen.  If you did it wrong your clip will appear before or after the existing clips.  You need to make sure you are green screen enabled.  I think there is a button in preferences for advanced tool, or something along those lines.  I made my greenscreen out of green construction paper so the quality is not great, but I'm just making stop motion videos for my kid.
    Good luck

  • Why can't we do the things that you can do on Mac iMovie on iOS iMovie

I have an iPad 2 with iMovie installed onto it. I just want to know, why can't we do the things that you can do on the Mac version of iMovie on the iOS version? In the 2013/2014 Mac iMovie udate, they added templates from iOS onto Mac so why can't we get things like maps and globes, new texts, greenscreen and duplication (cloning)?

Same reason you cannot surf the internet without a web browser.
iTunes is the interface for the iTunes store just a Internet Explorer (or whatever) is the interface for the web.
