Grep styles and bullet points

Is there a way of using GREP styles to insert bullet points on text after a specific heading has been detected?
I am working on a brochure where many of the pages will have a features section, so am reluctant to manually overide paragraph styles. The "FEATURES:" heading will always stay the same, the text within the bullet points will change.
At the moment I have the following layout...
FEATURES:
test1
test2
test3
test4
What I am hoping to achieve is this...
FEATURES:
test1
test2
test3
test4
I haven't used GREP styles before but from looking round it seems the most obvious feature to use, so if anyone has an alternate solution that'd be great.

Header should be a paragraph style on it's own.
Use a hard return not a soft return for a new paragraph http://indesignsecrets.com/dos-and-donts-of-text-in-indesign.php
Bullet should be a separate paragraph style.
Apply that style to only bullets
Set a Character Style for your Bullets, which can be applied through the Bullet paragraph style.

  • Need some hand-holding and bullet point direction

ok, i need some help. We shoot our church services on Sony PDW-700 HD XDCAMS. We shoot in 420 HQ (whatever that is). Once we finish shooting the service, we pull the source video off of the XDCAM disk using the Sony XDCAM transfer utility. I believe we end up with a .mls file. We then edit the source and send it to compressor and then to DVD studio pro and it gets burned to a standard DVD. What we end up with is a video with artifacts in it. What I mean by artifacts is wavy lines around the edges of movement.
What I need to know, from step 1 to step whatever, is HOW to get the source from FCP to DVD w/out artifacts. It seems that we should be able to produce a DVD that looks better than ours and w/out the wavy lines around the edges of moving objects.
What I'm looking for is something like this:
When we open FCP, are there any preferences we need to have set before we import our source or will FCP adjust our project settings to match our source?
When done editing, do we need to do anything special when we send it to compressor?
Once in DVDSP, what do we need to be doing to make sure it comes out looking it's best.
I realize I am asking a lot here, but we're not novices. We understand things like the format of our media, etc. We're looking for a list or bullet point process to get from Media to DVD and have it look it's best.
    Thank you
    Cliff

If you have any doubts regarding the format you shot,
look in the Browser, control-click the media file, and select Item Properties > Format.
That will tell you exactly what FCP thinks you're using.
Note that if Field Dominance is None, your clip is progressive.
In the future, you should ask your camera crew to shoot progressive.

You may want to simplify the workflow by setting your sequence up first.
Before you create any sequences, choose menu item > Easy Setup,
and choose one of the XDCAM presets.
    • Chose Sony XDCAM HD
    • Choose HDCAM HD 1080i60 VBR
    • Choose framerate 20.97
Once you do this, all new sequences will have that format.
If you've set your sequence up correctly, dragging a clip to the sequence will not produce this:
For best performance, your sequence and external video should be set to the format
of the clips you are editing. Change sequence settings to match clip settings?
If you click yes, you are not transcoding. You are setting the sequence format to be the same
    as what you shot.
The bottom line is that when you set the sequence to match the footage,
you should be able to play the footage without rendering. Of course,
once you start editing and adding transitions, rendering may become
necessary. Check out the note on rendering to ProRes 422 in this article:
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/ex1_sd_outputyoung.html
Although he's talking about going from XDCAM EX to a PAL DVD,
most of the principles apply. In particular:
    • Set Rendering preferences to ProRes 422, i.e.
Sequence Settings > Render Control > Render > Codec
    • Do your HD edit.
    • When it's time to convert to SD (step 2 in the article) create a new sequence
with the settings NTSC Anamorphic. This will preserve the nice wide-screen look
of the original footage even when played on an SD DVD.
    • Step 4 of the article: choose NTSC anamorphic.
If your footage was shot interlaced, choose field dominance lower (even).
The compressor is NTSC, and the frame rate is 29.97.
In the advanced compression settings, note that it should be 16:9,
and Progressive if you're shooting or converting to progressive.
Check out the last section of this article:
    http://www.lafcpug.org/features/featurekeeping_thejob.html
where field dominance is discussed in more detail.

  • GREP Styles and Changing Ligatures

    Hello,
I have been using InDesign since it came out, and have great results. However, I am brand new to GREP, and was wondering if a script could be made/written(?) by me (a person who does not understand script), to do the following:
I have tons of copy, regularly, with a number of different ligatures in it. One (of the many, the fi ligature) causes the client to cringe. Is it possible to change this ligature by - turning off - the fi ligature only? Because I am out of the old school, I appreciate ligatures, and tight kerning.
I realize, I could just turn off ligatures, but, would rather not.
    Thank you,
    Lain Kennedy

A character style whose only property is no ligature, used as a GREP nested paragraph style, is certainly the best approach. However, if the ligature appears in many different paragraph styles, it might be possible to change them all in one operation by creating a paragraph style that duplicates (not based on) [No Style] - that is with no properties set - and create a GREP nested style for it that applies the no ligature property to fi. Then set each paragraph style to be based on this no-fi-ligature paragraph style.
I haven't tested this to see if this really works. Character styles are supposed to supersede paragraph styles, but perhaps not in this scenario.

  • Font's showing apostrophes and bullet points as wierd i symbol

Hi i'm having an issue in which the fonts Dax, Din and Bliss show a strange symbol when entering apostrophes or bulletpoints i have checked preferences the language is set to english. the font worked fine on CS5 and we are now on CS5.5 any help would be greatly appriciated.
The image below shows what its doing.

    Hello,
We have been having similar Issues as above.
We are getting font character "Glyphs replacing other characters"
    Specs of the machines
    Mac OsX=10.5.8
    ID version=ID-CS5 ver 7.0.3
    Acrobat Distiller version = 8.0
Suitcase version=12.1.7 (We do not use suitcase anymore thinking this was the issue, we place the fonts into the Indesign CS5 font folder)
Fonts we have had this issue with
    Sabon LT Std.
    Garamond MT Regular
    Fairfield LT STD
    TimesLT Std
    Palatino LT Std
    Minion Pro Regular
    Verdana Italic
    Times New Roman PS
Characters that have been causing the issues.
    io, il, hn, SY
The characters they are replaced with.
    Ú Ÿ Õ Š Ỳ §
We run font cache cleaners such as Font Nuke, Font smasher and we even created our own from information found in other places where all the font cache's hide as well as suitcase's.
We tend to catch this issue in out PDF files we are actually but it does show up in the Indesign file, but you can close indesign and then reopen it and the issue is gone.
This lead us to believing it was a system font cache issue.
We process many jobs on a given day via 3 different machines that are setup to create PDF files.
We have a Process in place that before every job we clean the font cache and restart the machine.  Now I do not know if people are following this procedure all the time but we do have this issue appear like every 3 weeks when we get more work going thru the workflows.
I am looking for other Solutions to what this could be, would upgrading to cs5.5 help solve this issue? Could it be Indesigns Preference file getting bashed as well?  How can I better search for these characters.
We have been finding new characters it has replaced so its not always the same characters one time it was
    joŸ =john
joÚ =john this was the latest.
    Thank you for any responses.

  • Grep Styles/Nested Styles from the end of the paragraph

    Hi -
It appears that grep styles, and nested styles only allow you to apply styles from the beginning of the paragraph until the match.
I'd like to be able to apply styles from the END of the paragraph going back.
This would allow me to apply a non-breaking character style to the end of a paragraph to control "runts". You could make the last two words of a paragraph non breaking, or set a 15 character threshold.
This wouldn't work for all cases, but I'm working with centered, non-justified text, so it should work fine. If the feature were there.
I'm sure there are other things one could do with it as well.
    There's a good discussion, and a MANUAL work-around on

I used your suggestion and reviewed the tutorial again.

    Thanks again.

  • Lost GREP styles

I had created a whole liste of GREP-styles and suddenly I realize they have all disappeared. Perhaps this happened when synchronizing the parameters, or by installing Indesign 2014. Does someone know where the user-created GREP-styles are stored? I could try to get them via my Time Machine.

GREP styles are document-level attributes that you should be able to load from a previous document. Saved GREP queries for Find?Change, however, are stored as part of the user preferences. You should find a folder named Find-Change Queries in your profile or library in the same path where the InDesign Defaults preference file is stored for each version. You can copy the entire folder to a new version, or only selected queries. for more information, see Replace Your Preferences

  • How to copy the bullet point format/style from MS Word to Pages?

    Hi everyone,
I'm trying to make the swap from Mac Word to Pages but the one thing that frustrates me so much to the point of not using Pages is the bullet point system.
In Word the set spacings are exactly how I want them - whereas in Pages, everything is tighter - there is less space between the margin and the point, the point and the text etc.
I've painstakingly inserted all the spacings from Word into Pages and saved it as a "style" but it just reverts back to the default positioning when I open up a new document and select my saved style.
Any ideas / a magic tool to just copy the style from Word? It's such a shame because Pages is a much slicker programme than Word and I really want to use it but as a student, bullet points are my world.
    Thanks,
    James

Hi Peter, thanks for your reply.
Yeah I get the font and formatting for the text copied no problem when copying but I'm talking about from scratch in a new document, I insert a bullet point and even when selecting my saved style, it just reverts back to the default.
I agree, massive pain. It is the only thing stopping me from making the full switch now iCloud Drive is getting close to Dropbox.
Am I a misguided fool for thinking there's a patch or modification of some description that can copy the default bullet spacings from Word and create a new style following them in Pages?
    Thanks, James

  • My muse website, when uploaded, jumbles quotation marks, bullet points and apostrophes to appear as • and â€? Why?

My muse website jumbles quotation marks, bullet points and apostrophes to appear as ’.
Its fine when I preview in browser, only once it's been uploaded do the marks become jumbled. Why?

Thanks Zak..The server host said that the jumbled marks are appearing as binary code while the rest of the text is appearing as "text".
They believe that the problem may be occurring at the FTP. The server host is configured to host binary and unicode.
They advised me to upload a zipped folder containing the site and they will try and open it at their end. Also, not sure if this is unique
to Adobe font kits. Its from Adobe Font kit.

  • Numbered List and Bulleted List w/ Custom Style Sheet

    Hi,
I am a new user to RoboHelp 7, and must say I find it useful
but also painful to use. Currently I’m trying to solve
something that feels like a bug in RoboHelp 7, but before I give in
and accept defeat I wanted to check with the forum.
I have FrameMaker 8, and import the files to RH where I use
    them to create WebHelp projects.
    Here’s a short procedure:
    1. I Import my files with a predefined style sheet matching
    the FM styles.
    2. I also check the Convert to HTML list option and set all
numbering and bullet styles to User defined.
    - After import RH does the usual thing and creates a bunch
of style sheets on its own
    3. I select all the files from the Topic List pod and apply a
new custom style sheet. This enables me to have one style sheet for
all the HTML files with the right layout and formatting
    4. I generate the output, and RH uses the new style sheet
    reference
The resulting HTML files shows that the output is not the
same as the generated HTML shown in RH’s HTML editor view
    - Editor view: <li class=”style”>
    - Browser view: <li>
    6. If I make a change (e.g. add a space) and save the HTML
file, and generate the project again the HTML is correct in the
    browser
One could argue that it’s not a big problem; however,
with a large project this is starting to look more like a nightmare
Does anyone know of this problem, and if so can it be fixed?
    Kind regards,
    Jon

Is this the time when I get really angry at Adobe for creating the worst FrameMaker/RoboHelp integration ever? No! However, I must admit that I'm amazed that they are unable to solve an important feature as conversion of lists from a FrameMaker document to a RoboHelp WebHelp project. When I say conversion I mean a clean conversion with minimal interference from RoboHelp that allows me to use CSS to its full extent.
Here's the problem, and this was also the problem with RoboHelp 7 and FrameMaker 8. BTW, I use standalone versions (not TCS 1 or 2).
Figures: First image depicts FrameMaker 9's Paragraph Designer and the Autonumber format for a paragraph named VizNumbered. Second image depicts the RoboHelp 8's conversion setting.
FrameMaker uses Autonumbering in front of paragraphs to create lists. This means that you in RoboHelp need to manage two formats, the autonumber and the paragraph style.
RoboHelp does of course not (by default) use Autonumbering in front of paragraphs because a RoboHelp WebHelp project is HTML based, and list tags in HTML can perfectly handle any formatting of text etc.
RoboHelp will convert, when "Convert Autonumber to HTML List" is selected, the Autonumber in FrameMaker to a list tag (LI). By default this will generate a list with a lot of margin, font and other CSS properties that tries to simulate the way the list is laid out in the FrameMaker document. In addition to the list tags it will convert the FrameMaker paragraph to a P tag which it inserts within a list tag. The issue you will experience with this is that indentations with the paragraph tag does not align properly between line 1 and 2. At the same time the WebHelp project will not look the same in IE, Firefox or Chrome. That is, Chrome and Firefox will look the same, and IE different. IE has the WYSIWYG feel, but it does not comply well with W3C standards (i.e. using P tags enclosed by LI tags is not a good idea ...).
Selecting "Convert Autonumber to RoboHelp List" does something similar, but is not recommended at all!
So, here's the big question. How can I make sure RoboHelp understands that I ONLY need to define a list tag with a CSS class attribute attached to it?
Today I basically only get the following:
    <li><p class=""></p></li> or,
    <p class=""></p>
What I want is the following:
    <li class=""></li>
Can this be solved with today's versions, can anyone help me, or do I have to wait for the Adobe development team to realize this and to fix it?

  • Configure Numbered and Bulleted Styles in CSS

I have searched and read a lot of postings re:Numbered and Bulleted styles/lists in the CSS setup and still have no clue how this was changed in the most recent build of RoboHelp HTML or the correct way to apply and get to work.
In X5 of RoboHelp HTML, I had a CSS style sheet with 5 paragraph styles with bullets. I did not create a list - I simply bulleted the style. When I apply one of these styles to a paragraph it adds a bullet.
I upgraded to RoboHelp HTML X8.0.2.208 and my bulleted styles are a total mess. The styles are still in the CSS, but when applied there is no bullet - it adds a number (then I have to click the Bullet icon button on the toolbar to apply a bullet). I have tried to find release notes or some documentation explaining the change and can find none. I have reviewed Peter Grange's site information about lists and multilevel lists, but see no reason why I cannot just apply a bullet directly on a style without using the list or multilevel list.
I guess the issue may be my stupidity on the configuration and use of lists and multilevel lists. Is there any documentation from Adobe that outlines the change that occurred as of this most recent build? I am looking for an explanation of how a list corresponds to a style and how to get the style to work correctly. Ironically, the online help has been no help at all.
As always, thanks to any feedback or direction.
    Michael F Weart

OK - sorry have not posted my solution and it works for me...
This is what I did to create a single level bulleted style using bulleted list:
    (1) Create a MultiLevel List Style called BulletedList
I have only defined Level 1 of the MultiLevel List
For that Level 1 - I DID NOT specify a Paragraph Style
For that Level 1 - I selected List Style of DISC
For that Level 1 - I defined the Edit Style as <x>
Saved this MultiLevel List style with a name of BulletedList
    (2) Created a Paragraph Style called NBullet
Font is set to Arial 10pt
    Spacing/After is set to 6pt
From Indents line - clicked the AutoNumber icon button
This opens the List for Autonumbering dialog and I set the following:
Checked the box for Inherit Numbering Property from Multilevel List
Selected BulletedList from the List Class drop down
    Selected List Level as "1"
Clicked OK to apply and return to Paragraph Style Setup dialog
On Paragraph Style Setup dialog clicked the Format drop down button
    Selected Paragraph formatting
    Defined Left Indentation of .5in
Defined Special Indentation of Hanging .25in
    (3) Clicked OK to save the Paragraph style called NBullet
When I look at the drop down list of styles within a topic, the style name appears as "1 NBullet". Don't let the "1" fool you - when I apply that style the "disc" bullet is applied and NOT a number (it just displays a number in the style name for some reason that escapes me).
I now have my bulleted style back and it works fine.
NOTE:  I do not like to reformat anything, so I set up an NBullet (Spacing After set to 6pt), NBulletSpace (Spacing After set to 12pt) and NBulletLast (Spacing After set to 18pt).
I also set up "bullet continuation" paragraph styles so I can lead with a bulleted line of text and then follow with "additional information" paragraph that aligns to the text in the bulleted lead paragraph line - that paragraph style is NBulletContinue defined with NO autonumber setup and the Format/Paragraph set to Indent/Left .75in (which aligns the text to the text of the bulleted paragraph).
I set up the same paradigm of NBulletContinue, NBulletContinueSpace and NBulletContinueLast.
    =============
Aside from the Style name appearing in the Style list when working in a topic as "1 NBullet", "1 NBulletSpace" and "1 NBulletLast" the formatting works and looks great (and note - the style name when I go into CSS formatting does not have the leading "1").
Also note, if I use the Increase Indent option when working in a topic on the NBullet styled paragraph, the Level 2 bullet list format is applied. I HAVE NEVER and WILL NEVER use the Increase or Decrease Indent functionality (either in Word or RoboHTML).
All of my CSS styles match the naming convention used in my Word template - making it easier to push content back and forth between Word and RoboHTML.
    =============
My approach may be non-standard and may not be within the spirit of this functionality, but it works for me and I get the formatting I need.
One last note on the comment of the "sluggishness of the product" for x8 - I had the same problem and then I applied the two patches that were made available. The difference in the response time was VERY noticeable in a GOOD way. Search for and apply both fixes to RoboHTML x8 and you will see a pronounced difference. I also got my boss to approve ordering a new PC and now there is not sluggishness at all in the performance.
    Thanks to all --

  • Grep Styles - Conflicting - "^" not working in lookbehind and more

    Hi,
Still fighting my way in the jungle of paragraph grep styles.
In InDesign CS5 by the way.
I import text from DB and they all come in the same.
I need to use the same paragraph style to all paragraphs.
I really don't want to use find-change since that would mess up the xml holding the data.
    Example-text explanation:
    • All sizes are separated by ", - "
    • …… = tab
    • Not all rows have tab
    • Sizes can be both numeric, letters, contain "/" and "-" and """ and " " (space) and yes indeed a "," comma!! (and every other idiotic combination you culd think of.)
    • When only 2 posts in a row - should be separated by a ", " = (Comma-space)
    • When more than 2 posts i a row - all posts but first and last should be hidden and separated by " - " (space-dash-space)
I have tried numerous combinations to get them all but they always conflict with each other.
    Bugger!
    I really shouldn't be impossible.
Is it possible in Paragraph grep styles to "catch" "any character but these" and kind of make a character-set like [!not this character]   (= [!a|b|c]  )
Is it possible to count the number of posts in a row? ( like... if more than 2 then hide...bla bla)
All sizes are separated by the same ", - " and sometimes I want to hide them, and somtimes I want to use one of them...
Is there any kind of "if-else" thing that can be used??
My original idea was to be able to catch them by using ^-combinations for beginning of paragraph and matching with tha linebreak and tab but it seems as if that don't always work when using positive or negative look-behind-ahead.
    Oh, I'm blabbering. Sorry.
Any hints or pointers would be greatly appreciated.
    /K

  • Using GREP styles for changing characters and colors

    Hello everybody,
I have a question regarding GREP styles. I wish to change each letter of an alphabet in text to a square in a different color. For example: every 'a' in the text change to a yellow ■. I thought GREP styles would be perfect for it so I went to find/change, typed in my requests and InDesign told me it has found no 'a' in my text, which isn't possible. How do I fix it? And the other thing- is it possible to change the color of ■ ? Because i couldn't find the option.
Please excuse me my incompetence, I am a new user of InDesign.
Thanks in advance for your help! : )

First off, it sounds like you want to use find/change with GREP, which is fine, rather than a GREP style, which is part of a paragraph style definition and cannot change the text in any way other than apply a character style to the found string, so would not help here.
The not finding the text makes me think you've limited the search parameters in some way, either by limiting the scope to a selection, or by including a style or format requirement in the find options, perhaps.
In order to do this, I think you are going to need to make use of the "other" category in the change dropdown and select Formatted Contents of Clipboard (which should clue you in that you need to make one of your colored squares and copy it to the clipboard before you run Find/Change). You can do this with either a plain text query or a GREP query, and there is no advantage to GREP in this case unless you want to match several different things and apply the same clipboard content to any of them.
You'll need to run a separate find/change for each colored square. It might be possible to script a chain so it runs in a single operation, but that would also require swapping the colored sqaures on the clipboard which complicates things in this case. You might want to ask over in scripting: InDesign Scripting

  • Bullet points in Captivate 5.5 and 6.0

I have not been able to get adequate support or an acceptable solution to this persistent problem so I'm posting it here hoping for some help.
Image 1 is the original PowerPoint where the bullet points are spaced properly:
Image 2 is taken after presentation has been importaed into Captivate:
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi there,
In Captivate 6 when you import a pptx file (if it is ppt in your case save it as pptx) you will see an option High Fidelity in the PowerPoint Import Dialog. Check that option & import the pptx.
The bullets issue you mentioned here should not happen with High Fidelity import.
Let us know your observations and if your problem is solved.

  • There is no facility of bullet points and tabs space I have seen in the any versions of Adobe Muse

There is no facility of bullet points and tabs space I have seen in the both versions of Adobe Muse while working with paragraph text layouts. Can anyone tell me the about it if there?

It's unlikely Muse will ever have tab stops (since HTML/CSS has no concept of tab stops).
Lists and tables are both highly requested features. It's likely lists will be supported in Muse before tables, not due to prioritization, but due to the fact tables is vastly more complicated and thus more work to design, implement and test.
