Grey Apple Start Screen with Grey 'bar' above, half thick, half thin

Hi
iMac G5 1.8 20" crashed, restarted holding power button.
Restarts with Grey Apple start screen and a 1/2 thick 1/2 thin bar above the Apple logo, fans on maximum, no further progress.
Any thoughts people ?
Thanks
Simon

HI Simon,
Have you tried booting from your install disk?
Insert the installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
If you cannot boot from your install disk, try booting in Safe Mode

The disk utility program has found an error and cannot repair it - Disk Utility is not able to repair the drive it has been booted from. You'll need to restart the computer using another disk - this is one reason why I always travel with an emergency DVD and a bootable external drive. Invalid node structure errors are non-trivial; sometimes Disk Utility will repair them and sometimes not. Disk Warrior has been my second line of defence for disk drive problems for years.

  • Gray Boot Screen with progress bar & SMC Issues

    Hi All,
Over the last few days I've experienced the grey boot screen with progress bar three separate times after the finder froze and I was forced to manually reboot my imac. Previously I have only seen this during a Firmware update.
I am also concerned about the Finder freezing. It has been happening when I've been trying to access any of my external hard drives at random intervals (connected via usb, and f800). I am concered that my SMC controller might be failing as these drives are testing fine on other computers and in drive test programs. Also, the f800 drives have been self unmounting.
I had my internal drive replaced by apple a few weeks ago, could they have somehow damaged the smc controller unintentially? Or is this simply a Snow Leopard hiccup? (I'm running 10.6.2). I'm really starting to get annoyed with having to hard reboot or constantly reset my SMC. Any ideas before I take it in to a store?
    Thanks!

I have found other users have this same problem when using windows. My setup worked fine until I did a windows update. Now apple partition is inaccessible. Guess the windows update whacked the apple partition. Apple should have a workaround. Bad Windows!

  • Bootcamp hanging up on Apple start screen.

So I'm fairly new at this but I have spent hours reading up on boot camp issues with no luck. I am trying to install Windows 8.1 pro with boot camp on a mid 2010 macbook pro running mavericks on an SSD. I have a brand new full dvd disk version of Windows 8.1 Pro in an external usb cd/dvd reader.  I have downloaded the windows support software and loaded them onto a flash drive. I run through the steps with bootcamp assistant, which creates a partition and then restarts the computer. If I understand corectly, it should boot up into windows setup, but it just boots to the grey mac start screen with a grey apple logo and freezes there.'
I have shut off the computer and restarted, pressing the option button, which takes me to the boot screen / menu. It then gives me two boot option; the mac osx and a recovery partition option. No Windows or Bootcamp option.
If I select the Mac option, it will boot into osx without any problems. I can navigate to Finder, and see the new Bootcamp partition and I can see the Windows install DVD on the desktop and in Finder.
I then restart again, and press option after the startup tone. Now it gives me four boot options. Two with a hard disk image, Mac OS X and a Recovery partion, and two with a DVD disk image, titled "Windows" and "EFI Boot".
If I click on the Windows option, I get the grey startup screen with a grey Apple logo in the center, where it freezes.
Shut off the computer and restart, and it boots to a black screen with the text, "No bootable device -- insert boot dsk and press any key" and hangs there.
Shut off computer and hold down option key again to get the boot menu / screen.
If I click on the EFI Boot, it takes me into the Windows setup, and everything works fine until I select the Bootcamp partition to install Windows to, and then it tells me that it cannot use the bootcamp partiton (or any other partition) because "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition talbe. On EFI systems, Windwos can only be installed to GPT disks. Windows cannot be installed to this hard disk space. Windows must be installed to a partition formatted as NTFS."
It gives me the option to format the partion, which I did, but seemingly had no effect other than the error message dropping the last sentence. ("Windows cannot be installed to this hard disk space. Windows must be installed to a partition formatted as NTFS.")
I have no idea what to try next. Anybody have any advice?

I have this exact same issue. Its hanging on install, no matter what I seem to do. My system is a late 2009 iMac.
It wont start install of windows from a USB or DVD drive, no matter what I do.
The only fix I can think of, requires reverting to an older system of OSX (snow leopard for instance) which DID let me install windows from a USB (a few years ago). Its only been since my HD died and I installed mavericks, that I can no longer install windows at all.. it just hangs on the apple logo, or gives the error "No bootable device -- insert boot dsk and press any key". I'm hoping that during the new updates to mavericks, my firmware or BIOS has not been altered also with this new mavericks curse that will still block the install for snow leopard. Would this work??

  • My 2011 IMac will not boot up past the White apple logo screen with the whirly circle

My 2011 IMac will not boot up past the White apple logo screen with the whirly circle. I have tried various commands but to no avail. does anybody have any advice?

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a startup failure is to secure the data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since the last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to start. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    a. Start up from the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.” The article refers to starting up from a DVD, but the procedure in Recovery mode is the same. You don't need a DVD if you're running OS X 10.7 or later.
    b. If Step 1a fails because of disk errors, and no other Mac is available, then you may be able to salvage some of your files by copying them in the Finder. If you already have an external drive with OS X installed, start up from it. Otherwise, if you have Internet access, follow the instructions on this page to prepare the external drive and install OS X on it. You'll use the Recovery installer, rather than downloading it from the App Store.
    c. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    d. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
If the startup process stops at a blank gray screen with no Apple logo or spinning "daisy wheel," then the startup volume may be full. If you had previously seen warnings of low disk space, this is almost certainly the case. You might be able to start up in safe mode even though you can't start up normally. Otherwise, start up from an external drive, or else use the technique in Step 1b, 1c, or 1d to mount the internal drive and delete some files. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation.
    Step 3
Sometimes a startup failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 4
If you use a wireless keyboard, trackpad, or mouse, replace or recharge the batteries. The battery level shown in the Bluetooth menu item may not be accurate.
    Step 5
If there's a built-in optical drive, a disc may be stuck in it. Follow these instructions to eject it.
    Step 6
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can start up now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
    Step 7
If you've started from an external storage device, make sure that the internal startup volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
Start up in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know the login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you start up in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, the startup volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 11. If you ever have another problem with the drive, replace it immediately.
If you can start and log in in safe mode, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then restart as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the startup process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 8
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select the startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then restart as usual.
    Step 9
If the startup device is an aftermarket SSD, it may need a firmware update and/or a forced "garbage collection." Instructions for doing this with a Crucial-branded SSD were posted here. Some of those instructions may apply to other brands of SSD, but you should check with the vendor's tech support.
    Step 10
Reinstall the OS. If the Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Step 11
Do as in Step 9, but this time erase the startup volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically restart into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer the data from a Time Machine or other backup.
    Step 12
This step applies only to models that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery: all Mac Pro's and some others (not current models.) Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery, if there is one, is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a startup failure. Typically the failure will be preceded by loss of the settings for the startup disk and system clock. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
    Step 13
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

  • Continuous Apple Start Screen after System Restore

After accidentally deleting a number of folders from Entouage and unsuccessfully trying to restore them via individual file restores, I attempted a full system restore by using Snow Leopard install disk (white, upgrade purchase) and launching from Utilities. Time Machine backup is located on a USB connected 2TB external drive.
The Restore indicates that it was successfully completed; however, upon restart, the white Apple screen appears and continuously 'spins'. I have left it to do this for up to 20 minutes before giving up and hard restarting.
I have tried disconnecting the USB drive on startup, zapping PRAM, running Disk Utility and checking/restoring permissions and verifying disk. When I try starting back up, it does the same thing.
The machine was working perfectly fine prior to restore (except for my erroneously deleted Entourage folders). Help!

You're correct. Reinstall your original OS X then run the appropriate Combo Update.
    I'm running OS X 10.6.6 also.
I did a restore yesterday and had the same issue with the Apple Start screen continually clocking. After researching how others fixed this:
    * I left the restore alone.
    * Booted from my OS X 10.6.3 disk
    * Reinstalled that version of the OS. Received my desktop after the restart.
    * Reinstalled the Combo Update for 10.6.6.
    * Repaired Permissions.
    * For a couple of 3rd party apps, I had to reinstall that app (no biggie).
All was fine and all my apps and data were intact after all of the above.
I have read where others with OS X 10.6.5 or earlier didn't have this issue. Seems to possibly be something with 10.6.6.

  • Splash screen with progress bar and multiple jar files to load

    Hello,
I have been looking to the new features in java 6 for splash screens. I haven't implemented this never before and i was wondering how i could do the following with java 1.5 or 6:
I would like to see a splash screen with a progress bar that "grows" when every jar file has been read.
At this time i call my application like this from a shell script:
    exec "$JAVA_BIN" -Djava.library.path=$LIBRARIES_J3D -classpath xxxx.jar yyyy.jar zzzz.jar ...
where xxx.jar, yyy.jar and zzz.jar are very heavy jars.
So i would like to see in the progress bar 33% 66% and 100% when they are loaded.
I do not know if this is the right forum to ask for this. If no, please point me which would be the ideal one.
Any help will be very useful. Thanks to all!

  • Photoshop CS5 "full screen with menu bar" problem

Hi, I use Photoshop in a Mac computer. In CS4 when I work in "full screen with menu bar" mode, is really a full screen because the workspace go beyond the dock at the bottom. I mean, the dock is overlaping the workspace. In CS5, in the same mode is not really a full screen, the workspace ends above the dock, and the space at the bottom of the screen is wasted. I want to know why they changed that, and if there is a way to fix the problem (Hide the dock is not an option for me. Neither to use standard screen mode, cause that way I can't move the image around when zoomed out)

    The following may work:
    1. Record an action and use insert menu item for:
View>Screen Mode>Full Screen with Menu Bar
                                and
       View>Fit on Screen
    2. Go to: File>Scripts>Scripts Event Manager.
In the event manager dialog choose the settings as below.
Everytime you open a document, the screen mode will go to full screen
    and fit on screen.
If you decide that's a pain, you can go to the scripts event manager and remove the action.
For this to work, the action you recorded has to be in the actions panel.

  • My Mac Book Pro starts up with gray bars and instructs me to restart the sy

I started having problems with my Mac Book Pro last night. It crashed, and instructed me to restart the computer. I've tried the following with the install CD inside the CD ROM Drive:
    1) Restarted it with the OPTION key pressed down
    2) Restarted it with the C key pressed down
    3) Restarted it with the D key pressed down
The extensive Hard Drive test did not detect any problems. I cannot boot from the main HD or the Install CD. I cannot enter safe mode.
On a regular boot up the computer starts up with gray bars and the gray bars fill the screen, the spinning gear appears and more gray bars on the screen. The screen then turns black and then I get the restart message.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Like BSteely, I am curious as to how you ran hard drive tests if you can't boot from the Installer disc? Do you have another bootable hard drive attached?
You might want to try pulling and reseating the RAM and hard drive along with performing an SMC reset. Disconnect any external USB and FireWire devices. You're getting kernel panics during startup which usually indicate a hardware issue.
