Grey boxes in gallery photos

A few of my photos in my Galaxy S4 gallery have suddenly had a grey box cover various portions of the photos. Some are half while others the grey covers almost all of the photo. Anyone know why this has happened and how do I fix it please? thanks for any help you can give.

Hey Adam..........thanks for responding to me. This issue started last week as I was backing up my gallery photos over to Dropbox from my S4. I have not made any changes to my device or plan, nor have I done any updates, downloads or damaged my device. The images in the thumbnails at the bottom are clear and visible, however when I tap the photo it pops up for an instant and then a grey box covers the photo. All my photos are on the SD card- none are in the cloud, which is why I sent them to my dropbox to back them up. It appears that there are about 5 or so of over 700 photos that this has happened to. I am attaching a few of them so you can see the problem. Let me know what I need to do to fix this. Please reply to my email (removed)
Thanks Adam Tim

• Blank grey boxes instead of photo

I restored my photo library because I had blank grey boxes instead of photo in many event folders. I got all blank grey boxes and the same key picture for almost all my photos.

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to rebuild the thumbnails. It can take 3 or 4 goes for this to work

• Why is my preview area showing only greyed out boxes instead of photos?

I am unable to import my photos so they can be seen. Whether I try to import them from the hard drive, camera card, or my desktop (following the tutorial), I do not see photographs in the preview area, only greyed out boxes instead of photos. If I imported 6 photos, I have six greyed out (photo-sized) boxes. The specific photos are there somehow, becuase they are properly named when I scroll the mouse over them, but I see only flat grey, no pictures. As I said, this happens even when I follow the tutorial and import from my desktop.

George,
I appreciate you responding to my inquiry. We (that would be the "royal" we, which would be my husband) finally determined that the monitor was not configured properly. "We" discovered this out after uninstalling and reinstalling Lightroom several times.
To answer your question, I was trying to import both photos taken in JPEG, as well as RAW, both were problematic. I could import no images. It was interesting that I could tell all of the data was coming over (when I floated the cursor over a grayed-out box I could read the data), just not the images.
I have a Nikon D5100. I purchased Lightroom 5.0 just before now(two days ago), and was trying to install and play with it. I upgraded to 5.2 as I was going into it for the first time (it is an automatic question). I knew there was obviously a problem when I couldn't see any images. Particularly when I went into the tutorials -- it just reemphasized that something was wrong. Who ever thinks of how their monitor is configured?????
Thank you for following up. I was very frustrated for many, many hours.

• Photos not downloading to app. Getting blank grey boxes instead.

Hello,
I recently had the need to log out of iCloud to troubleshoot an issue on my iPad Air 2 running iOS 8.1.2.
In the photos app, I've got iCloud Photo Library turned on, most of my photos downloaded fine, however, there are several dozen that are showing up as blank grey boxes. If I tap on one, it goes full screen and a little progress circle appears, then hangs up a quarter of the way competed.
I received a new iPhone 6 Plus the day before yesterday, also on ios 8.1.2, and when I logged into all my accounts on it, all the photos downloaded to it without issue. None were missing or grey.
Anyone have any ideas why these photos aren't downloading properly to my iPad?
I've tried both rebooting and a hard reboot (home+ power).
I really would like to avoid having to log out of iCloud again, or restore the iPad,, since it literally takes 15-18 hours for all my data to sync back to the device, most need ing manual intervention to speed up the process, ie launching apps and letting them stay open until all data is synced, then launching the next app, and so on. For example, my collection of photos has 10,974 images and videos, so that alone takes hours and hours to sync.

Yes, the photos are/were on iCloud.com, in addition to, my iPhone 6 Plus. All the photos, except for the newest images, are backed up in iPhoto. I uploaded my entire photo library into the iCloud Photo Library because of the compression, where 98gigs of photos only take up only 28gigs on my iCloud Drive and 9gigs on my iDevices. Can't beat having all your photos in your pocket.
That being said, I knew there would be issues, as iCloud Photo Library is in beta. Moreover, I have found iOS 8 and Yosemite to be the buggiest and most frustrating software releases I have dealt with since the initial release of OS X, back in 2001.
Sad to say that, "It just works," cannot be used to describe the current state of Apples software.
So, I still have over 10,000 images, loosing 108 images isn't really all that big a deal. I just hope it doesn't continue to happen.
On a side note. I have a lot of issues trying to share images with shared folders. I create and name a shared folder. I add people. Then I open the folder, hit the big plus, select photos, hit done, and nothing happens. Sometimes I can get it started by selecting only one photo. Other times I try it on a different device to get it to work. It only works about 60% of the time. It's so frustrating, I'm looking for alternatives.

• My photos in photo stream are just grey boxes

my ipad 4 retina display has recently lost a load of photos from my photo stream , they appear as Grey boxes but they are still all ther on my iPhone 5

Tap Settings > iCloud > Photos
Then switch My Photo Stream OFF then back ON.
Give iCloud a few minutes to re sync the data.

• When working in my photo album in iphoto my photos are replaced with a grey box and an !. I can't see the image on the page.

Lately when I am working in my photo album in iPhoto my images are replaced with a grey box and an ! . I can't see the images on the page. All my photos are high quality. What am I doing wrong?

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

• HT4623 Updated my ipad using 7.0.4 iOS, now my pictures in my photo stream are showing "JPG" in a grey box, how can it view my pictures?

Just ran the 7.0.4 iOS update on my iPad & now I can't view my pictures under the photo stream album, it's showing a grey box with "JPG" where the individual pictures should be, how can I view my photos?

I had the same issue,
Mine was with sync'ed photos, not Photo Stream,
I opened the iPhoto Library Package and removed the iPod Photo Cache. Then resync'ed and everything started working great!

How are you trying?
Just showing a grey box just now even for video.
Videos do not go into Photo Stream.
You can add them to a Shared Photo Stream.

• No Photos, grey Boxes

Imported my photos but c
an't see anything but grey boxes, what should or could I do to resolve this. I
have Lightroom 3

That's usually caused by a corrupt monitor profile. You should recalibrate your screen. If you don't own calibration hardware and are on windows (Macs don't usually have the corrupt monitor profile issue), go into the monitor's properties pane and delete any profile you see associated with the monitor. It is highly recommended to get a monitor calibrator as otherwise you simply cannot trust your monitor at all. Basic ones can be had for under $100 from Huey Pro and Spyder.

• Exclamation boxes instead of photos!

When I click on certain photo thumbs in my iPhoto (version 6.0.1) library the photos will flash on the editing screen for half a second and then seem to be "hidden" behind a grey box with an exclamation point. Older slide shows I've created will play the music to these strange exclamation point boxes, showing no photos.
I did organize my photo files in finder before this started happening, but when I tried to move them back to their original locations to maybe solve the problem it was not successful - no luck seeing the photos in full display in iPhoto. They do display in the finder. Any suggestions on what to try next? I don't want to lose a year's worth of photos...

I did organize my photo files in finder before this started happening
Which explains what's gone wrong. iPhoto has lost the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents. Unfortunately, there is no solution for this problem except to start again.
You should not lose your photos in any case. They should be safe in the Folder called Originals.
To start again, move your iPhoto Library Folder from Home/Pictures to the desktop. Launch iPhoto. It will create a new Library in Home/Pictures. From the folder on the desktop, find the folder called Originals. These are your Pics as they were downloaded from your camera. You can import them to the new Library. When you have competed this task, and are sure that all is working properly, then you can trash the folder on the desktop.
And remember: It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss. Anything you need to do can and should be done via the iPhoto Window.
If you need help doing anything, then you can check the Help or post back here.

• Grey boxes when exporting slideshow.

When I export a slideshow from Lightroom (1.4.1 Windows), using all default settings it doesn't display properly. The pdf files (viewed with Acrobat Reader8) has right number of pages (photographs), however the photos are not showing. Instead I see a grey box (the size the photo should be) with a red diagonal line. Tried all helpfiles, should be straightforward, what am I doing wrong????
Many thanks!

Well known LR bug.
Regenerate your previews before export to slideshow.

• Missing Files Images Grey Box with ?

I have a large document that I am putting in many screenshots. I use the standard format (picture1, picture2, etc), then drag and drop them to my document. This has worked fine overall but yesterday I opened my file and received the error message that files were missing, specificlaly images. If I accept this and look at my document, there are grey boxes with a question mark in the center. What happened? The grey box shows the proper file name, just no image. Show contents shows that I have no files in there, I am at a loss (to fix this and my graphics).
BTW, I did start this from scratch (no templates).

Ok, I too got scared with this problem today! But apparently managed to fix it!
I was designing a photo book in Pages (to later order through iPhoto). I had about 90 high-res photos placed on 80 pages (with some pages having just text). Experimenting with the "PDF pages to JPEG" Automator scripts, my Pages document suddenly displayed grey boxes with a [?] symbol where about half of the images were. I still had about 40 images OK, but the other ones wouldn't display at all.
Opening the contents of the Pages document from the Finder, I was able to confirm that all my photos where inside the document and that they were not corrupted in any way.
I uncompressed the "index.xml.gz" file inside the Pages document and after a little examination, I spotted an odd property on an image entry: sf:corrupt="true"!!! What the ****.... That property was assigned to 43 images, the same ones that no longer appeared in my document.
To be able to edit the index.xml file more easily, I modified Pages' preferences file so that it would not "gz" the index.xml file. See: http://developer.apple.com/documentation/AppleApplications/Conceptual/iWork2-0XML/Chapter02/chapter_2_section5.html
I then re-launched Pages, opened my document with the images still broken, just saved it right away, closed the document from Pages and opened its contents from the Finder. The index.xml file no longer being compressed in gz format, the file was now easily editable. I opened it with BBEdit and removed all instances of sf:corrupt="true". Saved the file, closed everything and reopened my document in Pages. Bingo! All images are back!
Where does that "corrupt" property come from?

• Some sub menus icons are just grey boxes all of a sudden

Recently some of the sub menu icons in Netflix, MLB, and others have been showing up as grey boxes only. When highlighted, the name under the icon is there, but no picture. If I access the item, on the next screen it works perfectly and the picture or jacket photo is there. They have disappeared. Everything else works perfectly. I have an Apple TV, Gen 2.

Thanks for the advise. In the end, I unplugged the Apple TV, waited 5 minutes and then plugged it back in. That seems to have done the trick as the icon pictures are back.

• Weird grey boxes behind type areas

Okay this one's got me scratching my head...
Quark Xpress 7.31 exporting a page containing a news story, several photos and a few ads: Intel dual core PowerMac Tower with 2GB RAM running 10.4.11 and CS3.
We export the page as a .ps file from Quark Xpress using the "Export Layout as PDF" function and fire the file into a Distiller 8 watch folder. Distiller spits out a PDF in the usual way BUT... now all of a sudden we're seeing square 30% grey boxes behind all of the type areas on the page.
The grey areas are precisely rendered to match the text box locations in the Quark Xpress layout, and look as thought the Acrobat 8 application is generating them - almost as though it's a form of markup. It also resembles the effect you get if you took a standard PDF with embedded type and swept a test area with the text editing tool; the area you swept would highlight in light grey... which looks like the effect on-screen - only it's permanently active and cannot be disabled.
If we open the same 'erroneous' PDF on another Mac in our department running the same OS version and Acrobat 8 it looks the same with grey boxes. If we open the same PDF on a Mac running the same OS version and Acrobat 6, it looks fine with no grey boxes at all.
In all instances, the grey boxes do not print if we send them to a proofer or the RIP. It appears to be a display issue only. But it's mighty worrisome come press time... I've also run permission fixes, Onyx, Applejack, etc. to no avail.
Anyone? Could it be prefs related?

What colour space / tint / values are you getting inside the output
preview inside of Acrobat when you click inside these grey boxes?
Jon

• Why do I see grey box w/yellow checkmark on some images?

Why do some of my images in the organizer have a grey box in the upper left corner with a big yellow check mark in the middle of the image? If I click on the image it will say, "Seaching for missing files". What's up? Thanks again.

You probably mean a yellow question mark. That means that the photo is "missing" or "disconnected" from the PSE catalog. That is, the photo no longer resides at the location recorded in the catalog for that photo. Most likely, you used Windows Explorer to move or delete the photo after you imported it into PSE. See this FAQ for what to do:
