Grey checkerboard on macbook air

When I plugged in my usb optical drive into my macbook air, it automatically brings up DVD Player but I only see a grey checkerboard, no video only audio

If your MBP came with installation disks, you will need to connect an external DVD drive to it.
It would be helpful id you identified the model/year of your MBA and the OSX.
Ciao.

I want to use the same account for all my apple devices (macbook air, imac and iphone). I can't see how I can amend the iphone account because it is in grey? I also can't remember the password for this account so i can't even delete it and start again?
    Help!
    Thanks

Deleting an iCloud account only deletes it from the Device, not from iCloud.  In iOS 8, the name of this setting changed to "Sign Out" as that is a better reflection of what actually happens.  Your iCloud data remains on the server, available to devices still signed into the account, but the device you sign out of the account on is disconnected from the account, and as a result, the iCloud data from that account is removed from the device.  It will redownload to the device should you sign back into the account.
The only issue you'll run into when you switch between accounts is with my photo stream photos older than 30 days.  When you delete (or sign out of) and account, your photo stream photos are deleted along with the other data from the account in question.  However, unlike other data which remains on the server and can redownload to your device when you sign back in, my photo stream photos only remain in iCloud for 30 days.  When you sign back in, you will only get back my photo stream photos added in the last 30 days (as older photos are no longer in iCloud to redownload).  Like other account data, any my photo stream photos on your other devices signed into the account are unaffected by this.  If you want to keep older my photo stream photos on your device as you change iCloud accounts, save them to your camera roll before deleting (signing out of) the account.

Can anyone help me connect my Macbook Air to a SAMSUNG TV.  When I follow the basic instructions (Thunderbolt to HDMI connection) the screen on my computer goes grey and an error message appears inviting me to press any button to restart the Macbook.  When I do this nothing happens.  Only when I disconnect the computer from the TV does the Macbook allow me to login. The TV does not receive any signal from the Macbook even though I know the HDI port works fine.  Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?  Do I need to enable something on the Macbook?

    An update...
I downloaded Apple's (rather large!) list of software updates today, and I was finally able to recognize my iPod again. I did a restore using the iPod updater from 06-2006, and all seemed to work OK. (I'm afraid to try the new one again!)
Then I tried to re-load my music library from iTunes, and got stuck. It froze up after a while and wouldn't go any further.
When I disconnected my iPod from my computer, I find 2 podcasts and nothing else, though iTunes told me it had transferred 600+ songs. Those 2 podcasts do play fine, and the basic iPod software all seems to be intact.
So -- anyone get through this connection problem and have any ideas to share??

  • MacBook Air stuck on grey screen

My MacBook Air 2011 will not boot, as it gets stuck on a grey screen. Nothing works, not even any keyboard shortcuts.
    What ive tried:
    - Recovery Mode (Wont even change the screen, waited about 5 minutes)
    - Resetting PVC or whatever its called (Just reboots the computer)
    - Safe Boot (trying right now, told that it takes a while)
Taking it back to the apple store is my last resort, and I think im out of my warranty (no applecare).
    Any help?

    I totally understand this issue!
It's happened to me when I can't even move my mouse around. It's stuck on a grey screen and it's driving me nuts. i know this answer. This problem happened to my last night actually.
What I did was leave it be for as long as it needs. My screen was grey for 24 hours. When I woke up in the morning, the screen was back to normal, on the screen I needed to log on with. BY THE WAY, I prayed for my laptop. LOL! I really hope you don't end up with a "hunk" of $1000 dollars on you're desk. Maybe this will take longer than mine did, OR shorter amount of time.

  • Macbook Air won't allow me to erase. Format and Name are greyed out.

I'm looking to sell my original Macbook Air and after going through each step from the OS X Erase and Install tool from Apple Support, everything still remains greyed out, not allowing me to erase.  I've tried restarting with command, R, and I've also tried shutting down and starting up holding the down the option key.  Neither allows me to erase.  Any suggestions?

    Shut down the computer.

  • Macbook Air 11" Overheat Grey Screen.

Help Help Help !!!! I have a 2010 11" MBA 128Gb 4Gb RAM running Lion. About 1 month ago whilst attempting to upload a video to youtube (which was going to take about 3 hours) about half way through I came back to the room to find my display had a grey screen with no words or spinning ball on it and the base of the laptop was boiling to touch. I switched it off manually and then switched it back on immediately and it started up no problem.
I attempted to upload the video 10 minutes later but the same thing happened again and the base got very hot. I therefore left the upload and performed it on my imac with no problems.
I use the MBA very occaisionally, mostly for surfing the web, Lightroom, Photoshop and iphoto without any overheating problems at all and certainly no locked out grey screen. Anyway the same thing happened again yesterday so I immediatley trawled the internet forums for any help and others experiences.
From what I have read so far I have not really seen a remedy for this. I am using Google Chrome, something which has been mentioned however others, who have had overheating issues, have had the same issues when using Safari and Firefox so I have elimenated that cause. I am using Lion and not Mountain Lion so I have eliminated that one. I have read about resetting the SMC and PRAM however I have not tried that yet.
I guess I am really asking others who have experienced this if their is an ultimate remedy, or if it as motherboard or fan replacement issue ??
As it is out of warranty I don't want to go down the road of taking it to the local Apple Reseller to be charged stupid money for them to have a look and fob me off with something which you guys and gals may be able to help me with.
    Any idead much appreciated, thanks

  • Macbook Air 2008, LCD display nothing but grey, external display works

    Hi Everyone,
I've got a 2008 Macbook Air running 10.6.8 on a 1.86GHz Intel Core 2 with 2GB RAM and a NVIDIA GeForce 9400M. About a month ago something went wrong with the logic board - the unit wouldn't start up and gave 3 beeps indicating a bad RAM issue. Since the RAM is soldered directly to the logic board and the warranty was way past expired, I figured I'd just replace the board. The replacement was a breeze, albeit time-consuming, and once I got the new board in, the unit booted up fine.
The problem is that now the display isn't quite working right. When it first boots the screen is completely grey - I get no spinning disc, no apple, no question mark, nothing. If I leave it alone, the screen dims once the sleep timer kicks in, but it's just a darker shade of grey. The brightness works too - when you reduce it the screen does dim but there's still no picture. The kicker is that I hooked up my projector to it and I can my desktop as I should. I tried resetting the NVRAM, ran disc utility, and tried running the Apple Hardware Test. The thing with the AHT is that I can't see the screen when it's running so I don't know exactly how it went, but in System Profiler I see that an AHT was run today and the result was "Passed". I don't know if that means no errors came up, or that the errors that did come up weren't problematic enough to fail the test.
I was very careful in replacing the logic board so I doubt any of the internals were damaged in the process but everything seems to indicate a hardware issue here. The screen was working fine before the previous logic board died so I find it hard to believe that both the board and the screen died at the same time. I've read about some people finding the data display cable to be the problem but no amount of fussing with it causes even the slightest change on the LCD display.
Any suggestions of how to diagnose the screen and/or cable without a working display? I just put $300 into this machine in the logic board and I really don't want to spend even more to replace the screen/cable.
    Thanks,
    Kyle

    Hi Marat,
I appreciate the quick response but I doubt the machine is completely toast - it clearly still functions to some degree. I'm trying to assess whether the replacement logic board could be the problem (and how to test this) as well as troubleshooting the issue if it isn't the logic board. I don't feel like getting stuck with a $300 logic board that might have a fried component...

  • MacBook Air stuck in grey screen after ML installation

    Hi everybody,
I have downloaded and installed Mountain Lion on my MacBook Air (2011). After the installation the computer restarted and stuck in the grey loading screen, showing the apple logo and the turning wheel. I've left it alone for hours but nothing happens. This is still the case and I cannot find a way out.
Here is what I have tried so far:
    - Reload and reinstall ML via recovery mode (twice). Recovery mode shows me that 10.8 is installed, by the way
    - Restart without peripherals connected
    - Reset PRAM and NVRAM
    - Disconnect all cables and let the computer rest
    - Diagnose and repair hard drive (showed me a message that a Java-related group has a value of 80 but should be 0. Repair was "successful")
    - Safe boot (A bar appears in loading screen but disappears after it is about halfway full and I'm back in grey screen)
Unfortunately none of this worked. I have a Time Machine backup but it is located at the other end of the country (long story) and I can't access it easily.
Do you guys have any more ideas what else I could try? I'd really appreciate it.
    Thanks!

  • TS2570 macbook air : start with grey screen... help !!!

I have a new macbook air (3 months old) and all the sudden when I start it I have a grey screen with a question mark. The relevant Apple support page doesn't take into consideration the fact that you can't put an install disk into a macbook air. Help !

    Thank you for your answer.
Unfortunately, I had already tried this online recovery (it also works if you boot holding the option) but the utility program didn't offer me the possibility to repair (when I selected the disk, this option wasn't available. In fact, I couldn't choose any option at all for my disk).
I had just done the last system update proposed by Apple today. I never had any problem with a mac before and I am really in trouble in my work because of that. How can I try to save the most important files I was working on ? I am in Brazil so there is no Apple store available near my house.
I also have external hard disk, an imac and a macbook but I don't know if I can use any of them for that...

  • Macbook Air - White/Grey Screen with a folder and a question mark

Out of the blue , my macbook air stopped starting up and strted to show me a white/grey screen with nothing but a folder and a question mark . After searching on the internet for solutions and trying to reset my PRAM setting , it still wouldn't boot up . I opened up disk utility and going through internet recovery , I ran the first aid verification on my MAC OS X Base System and it said that it found no problems . I can't restore or erase by the way and i really wouldn't erase my files as I have very important files on my mac . Moving on , I tried to reinstall OS X , but apperently it needs a disk to install OS x on and since none appear , I tried using an USB . After creating a partition and erasing everything on my USB , not happy about that  , it wasn't big enough for the OS . So now I am basically stuck in the mac white screen Limbo .
Any sort of help would be fantastic and please do keep in mind that this is a macbook air and I do not have a place to put DVDs into . All I have read on different forum pages didn't help so i decided that it would be a good idea to create my very own thread . I am not very sure about the Mountain Lion version ,but I am not very sure that it matters .

I just received some horrifying news from Adobe about my production suite.  I just FINALLY learned today that what I've been trying to do for over a week now - CAN'T be done because of compatability issues involving updates of both Adobe & Microsucks Winders!!!  I sincerely hope this is not your problem.  Mine is ALMOST HOPELESS!!  Being in this HOPELESS Obamma economy,,,, leaves NO STIMULUS in which to currently upgrade everything that needs upgraded for me to fully use my INVESTMENT in Adobe Suite - sad, horrible and SICKENING!!!
I just wanted to post this. And again, I truly hope you find a solution. Good Luck!

  • My macbook air's screen is grey! What do I do?!

My macbook's screen keeps on changing color to grey and it's hurting my eyes! What did I do to cause this?....

Great this makes it very easy.
1, back up all of your data using time maching to an external Hard drive, or time capsule.
    2. restart your macbook air while holding down the option key
    3. you should see 2 icons one is named whatevery your macs drive is called (macintosh HD by defualt) and the other is called "recoveryHD" click that
    4. it should take about 30 seconds or so and boot up into Lion recovery mode there are a few options(use safari for support online, disk utility, restore from a time machine back up, reinstall lion via download) select the option to restore from time machine
    5. if you have a time capsule it will prompt you to connect to the network or you can plug in an external hard drive if thats where you backed up
    6. follow onscreen instructions to restore mac..times vary form 40 min to 1 and a half hours depending upon how large your backup is.
    7. it should automaticaly restart and login once it completes.
and that should solve the problem if it is a software issue.
If the problem continues you need to bring it to the apple store and they can fix or replace it, some macbook airs had a similar problem and were free to replace and repair so you might not have to pay for it.

  • Macbook Air 2011 Stuck on grey screen

    Hello All,
I have a 2011 Macbook air running 10.8.1 which won't successfully boot up. I press the power button, (i have to hold it a long time) and then it goes to a grey screen with an apple logo and a slowly filling status bar. Once the bar fills up after about 15-30 minutes, the computer turns off. Has happened maybe 10 times, always the same result.
I tried booting in repair mode, and I decided to reinstall OSX. The software said it would verify my computer with Apple. Despite having a completely legit computer purchased from an apple store, it says there is an error and I should try again. Again I've tried many times, and each time it won't let me reinstall OSX.
I reset the PRAM but it didn't make a difference.
What should I do to reinstall OSX or at least get the computer to a desktop again?
    Thanks!
    P.S.
If it helps, this is a link to an old discussion which was dealing with my computers previous issue of running merely very slow.  Since this is a different problem (I can't even get it to turn on) I created a new discussion.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4386839

Take this Mac to a local Apple Store (make a genius bar apointment first) and they can boot off ethernet and run a program called "MRI" which will run a bunch of tests quickly without loading OS X. This can pinpoint if there is a hardware, RAM or disk problem.

  • Macbook air Lion stuck at grey screen and spinning wheel

    HI
I have a Macbook air with Lion installed.  I pressed the On button, but it gets stuck at grey screen, apple logo and spining wheel.  I then managed to get it to startup in Safe Mode.
How can I find out  what the problem was?
Please could you let me know if there are some simple steps to fix this?
    Thank you in advance.

Please carefully read Gray screen appears during startup, Apple will tell you how to trouble shoot the issue. I suspect your HD has crashed, not a big deal if you have been backing up. However if you haven't then you're probably about to learn a lesson on why backup is critical.
