Grey Curtain Kernal Panic (w/log) - need help in deciphering

I read a couple of other threads on this event, which happened for the first time yesterday after waking my MBP from sleep. In both threads requests were made for the log(s), but I didn't see any posted. I have both the kernal panic log and the console entries surrounding the time it happened to mine. Can someone give a look at them and give me an idea whether there's something to look further into, repair, or replace.
Many thanks in advance for any assistance.

I didn't see a clue. Understanding crash logs isn’t easy and it’s hard (sometimes impossible) to decipher the cause of the problem. Take a look at Apple’s Crash Reporter document at http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn2004/tn2123.html

  • I have a Kernal Panic and may need to reinstall Tiger

I have a 20" G5 with iSight and now have a Kernal Panic. I'm backing up all of my data and think that reinstalling the OS may take care of my problem. Unfortunately, I have no idea where my original OS install disk is. Any idea how I can get a new one?

Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. What external devices do you have connected? When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices except your monitor, keyboard and mouse. Do you experience the same problems?
To eliminate RAM being the problem, Look at this link: *Testing RAM* @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.
Do you have an Apple Hardware Test disc? Running the Apple Hardware Test in Loop Mode is an excellent troubleshooting step for finding intermittent hardware problems. It is especially useful when troubleshooting intermittent kernel panics. If Loop Mode is supported by the version of the Apple Hardware Test you are using, you run the Extended Test in Loop Mode by pressing Control-L before starting the test. Looping On should appear in the right window. Then click the Extended Test button. The test will run continuously until a problem is found. If a problem is found, the test will cease to loop, indicating the problem it found. If the test fails, be sure to write down the exact message associated with the failure. In some cases, RAM problems did not show up until nearly 40 loops, so give it a good run.

Any help appreciated before I open her up!
I had multiple crashes attempting to post this. Desktop at the point of not useable. GPU temps are between 35 C and 60 C.
Also I can not get computer to crash in safe mode.

Is it possible to add a different card
Not to my knowledge. Whatever card you use would need to have Mac-specific firmware, so don't bother trying a PC card.

  • Need help to decipher hs_err_pid logs.

    Hi,
I have an application that is crashing and can't figure out what the cause is. I noticed these hs_err_pid logs a few weeks ago and noticed that they are logged everytime my application crashes. The application is called Lyrix and is built on a Java JVM. I am not sure of the version. Basically the application converts .rtf files from Lotus Notes into .pdf files and places them in a directory. Can someone please help me figure out what is causing this to crash? The server it is installed on is a multi-threaded machine with 8 procs. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it. Below is the log contents. Any help is GREATLY appreciated!!!!!

  • Having Kernel Panic issues and need help

So about 6 months ago I had a HD crash, I restored it through disk utility and reloaded from my last time machine backup.  Ever since then my computer would turn off randomly and I didn't know why, looked into it a bit more and thought the HD was bad so replaced it with a 500Gb SSD.  When I got that I used a HD clone to copy the drive over and the problem still continued.  I noticed it was when I would try and do something that might be a little taxing on the system like open a big program or stream something with other things open.  All things that might stress the system, but nothing out of the ordinary and never had an issue for the years I had the computer before the crash.  I looked into the issue more and have tried to trouble shoot the issue and this is what I have done/found thus far.
~Replaced HD to a SSD HD with no improvement
~Put new SSD in a totally different MCB and the issues still stand
~Reloaded Mavericks on the HD and it is still happening (Had an issue when trying to erase the HD in recovery, Disk Utility said it could unmount the disk when I clicked the drive, but if I clicked that name of the drive indented under neath it worked)
I have included my latest panic log in hopes for some help.  The new MacBook Pro that I put my HD in I got second hand and said they were having some issues with it, but it only happened when they upgraded to Yosemite.  There was nothing wrong with it previous, so I think I eliminated the possibility of it being a Hardware issue, but not 100% on that. Thanks for the help, Chris

    New updates:
I pulled the SSD out and put it into an external enclosure and was able to fully erase the drive through disk utility.  From there I used the bootable disk that came with the computer which put snow leopard on.  From there I upgrade through the app store to Mavericks, I used the computer all night with no issues or reboots at all, was finally able to run a Hardware diagnostic with nothing showing up there after the extended test.  I am now running Mavericks and am transferring data off my external, but only the essentials such as music and pictures with fresh installs of all applications.  Everything was going great... until about 5 min ago.  As I was transferring about 250Gb of music I opened a browser and had a kernel panic shutdown.  I have included the log, hoping it was just a fluke thing, but don't have any faith at this point

  • MacPro early 2008 kernel panic at startup - need help!

I have a MacPro early 2008 with OS 10.7.5 and I can't get it to restart without getting a kernel panic error. I get it at the grey screen at normal startup, safe mode, and trying to boot from the original install disk. I reset SMC and PRAM and still nothing. Running the extended diagnostics last night turned up no error codes. Any ideas?
Not sure what else to try at this point other than ordering a replacement graphics card which could be a chore to find in itself. Is there anyway to confirm if that is it?
    Thanks!

this is the last one I got before everything stopped.

  • Kernal Panic: iMac 2011: Please help.

    Hi, everyone,
A few months ago, a friend's iMac started to crash during random events. Sometimes while on Facebook, sometimes while just surfing the Internet, and sometimes just word processing. I wrote about it in this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/message/19560212?ac_cid=op123456#19560212
He brought it to Apple Genius at Apple Store here in town. The Genius ran it through a series of hardware checks and a stress test and couldn't recreate the issue. His only advice was "to shut down once in a while."
Sure enough, the panics continued to happen, always for a different reason. I finally suggested to my friend after some tests from the above thread, to do a Erase and Install of the operating system. This seemed to have fix the issue, but sure enough, the panics resurfaced. Yesterday, the machine had four panics in one day. At this point, I think my friend should take it back to the Apple Store, speak with a Genius and ask them to review all these logs. Basically, making sure he doesn't leave the store until they agree to take a real look at the computer. At this point, he has 10 to 12 crash logs. Here is the latest one:

    Lukas

    Hi,
in your output, there is a full collection which is a stop-the-world collection and collects all genenerations of your heap. So it's not just a concurrent mark. This could be caused by a concurrent mode failure or a System.gc() call in your application (which also leads to the output "concurrent mode failure").
Have a look at these two blog entries to see what all this means and how you could try to avoid it:
    http://blogs.sun.com/jonthecollector/entry/what_the_heck_s_a
    http://blogs.sun.com/jonthecollector/entry/why_now
One thing: Are you aware that with the parameter -XX:-DisableExplicitGC
you do allow explicit GCs? Since this is the default, there is no use in setting this parameter. If you want to disable them (which would be worth a try), you have to specify -XX:+DisableExplicitGC.
Now, even if a full collection happens, why does it take to long? One reason I could think of is that you do not have enough physical memory and some parts of your old heap has been paged out to disk. At the collection, it then needs to be paged in which could take a while.
    Nick.

  • Automount floods LDAP Log - need help

I've installed an LDAP server on a linux machine (with debian 5.0.4 on it), so I can share my login/home-directorys among my mac minis.
It took me a while to get everything working, but now I don't know how to fix this problem.
The users home-directorys are provided through a NFS server (also running on the linux machine) and in LDAP I have configured these automount setting:
    objectClass: automountMap
    objectClass: top
    automountMapName: auto_home
In the user entry, there is an associating information about the home-directory f.e. /home/mg.
Everything works fine so far but the logs of my LDAP are flooded with this:

About 4 or 5 logs per second - Is this normal? - What can I do to reduce this traffic?
My slapd is running mit -d acl and there is only 1 client logged on.
Thank you in advance for your help.

  • Grey Screen on start-up - Dad needs help again

    Hello to the mac family,
As a regular 9.2 user, I am stuck once again. I am trying to help my son's roommate at school. I have not seen the computer. I think....
He has a powerbook G-4.... On start up, he just gets the grey screen and the X sign. He is running X.4 (Tiger). The machine is just out of warranty time.
This problem just started. I told him to start up holding down the shift key to get into safe mode. When he holds down the shift key it just starts up and hangs at the grey screen with the X on it. It doesn't go further. Because he lives far away (from college) I am planning to bring my son's i-book disks to the college. My son has an i-book with Tiger.
Will this allow him to get to the utilities and check things from there?
    As I stated I am a 9 user so I can't help too much.
Could someone give us step by step instructions or a link to an article that will help us.
He has disconnected all periphs and plugged into an outlet.
I am floundering and would like to help him. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated..........mGb...........Jim (dad)
I also posted in Powe books in the hopes that someone can help me.

    Hello Allan,
First of all...cool last name (hahahah)
Now for te serious stuff. Thanks for the help.
My son's mother drove to campus and bought the discs for his computer. The computer will start from disk and we get to utilities, first aid. Then we tried to repair. It started the process and after several minutes we got an error message that stated could not complete because of an error.
Next he ws thinking of re-installing even though this was not a great option. As it turns out.... The original install disc can't see the HD as a destination to install to.
He took the computer to an apple store and talked to the "Mac genius bar" Ithink that is what it is called. They told him to try running "Warrior" and see if that can fix things. He is a college kid and I don't know if he can come up with the $$ for Warrior.
What is troubling is that this problem seems to be the direct result of Downloading an update for Quick Time. He did this last night and today the computer wouldn't start.???
I thank you for the links adn will read them carefully now that I am back home. Another odd thinng...I couldn't get the computer to boot in "Safe Mode or the other "fsq?? or whatever that is. I tried holding down apple + S...while booting, but it just starts up to the grey screen and stops. No unix commands show. I am over my head but was trying to help him out. I will post with any progress...Thanks again for the help....mGb.....Jim Sampson
    Allan, the error message was:
Catalog file entry not found for extent
    Volume check failed.
The underlying task reported failure on exit.
Just though this might help. Jim

Youtube won't work in safe mode because it depends on Flash. Flash is a browser plug-in, and plug-ins are disabled. The user interface may seem slower because hardware graphics acceleration is also disabled.
It sounds like your problem isn't manifested in safe mode. That means it was caused by one of two things: (a) a corrupt or outdated system cache that was rebuilt by booting in safe mode, or (b) some third-party software that you installed and that's temporarily disabled in safe mode.
Reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and test again. If the beachballs don't come back, problem solved.
If the beachballs do come back after rebooting, then open the Accounts preference pane in System Preferences and enable guest logins. Log in as Guest (no password needed) and test again. That will tell you whether the problem is due to something in your home folder, or outside your home folder.

  • Need help to decipher "name" variations on Mac

When I first set up my iMac recently, I used only Herschel Hochman to establish the account. By the time Mac was finished with it, I ended up with the following variations depending on what I was looking at:
    1) Herschel Hochman
    2) Herschel Hochman's iMac G5
    3) herschelhochman
    4) Herschel-Hochman.local
    on .Mac 5) hhochman
And, whenever I see the Mac name on the PC as in My Network Neighborhood, it shows up as:
    Herschel Hochma_s iMac G5.
    Here are the specifics:
When I look in System Preferences under,
"Account", in the left pane it truncates my name as
"Hersch...chman" so I don't know what it is.
In the right section is "Name: Herschel Hochman"
and "Short Name: herschelhochman" (grayed out)
Clicking on "Systems Preferences/Sharing", it shows:
Computer Name: Herschel Hochman's iMac G5
Logging in from the PC, for "User Name", I can get connected using 1) 2) 3) of the variations above. I can even login if I leave the apostrophe off of the name???
    ==============================
    As a side note,
On My PC, my username is "Herschel Hochman", Administrator.
If, from the above informtion, the Username on the Mac is "Herschel Hochman", the same as on the PC, it is strange that I have to log in from the PC.
    ==============================
I tried looking in the Help section, but I could not find a logical reason why Apple has to assign a "shortname"?
    AND
Why does Apple give the Mac my name with the extension "iMac G5"? and then leave off the last letter, substituting "_s?
I don't know what all of these names are about. I understand that one cannot easily change these names without having to start all over again (whatever that means). Is there a way to simplfy all of this without affecting my ability to network the computers?
    Thanks
    Herschel

Actually most - but not all - of the names are easy to change.
Let's start with the one which isn't: your "short name." Without some complex UNIX voodoo in Terminal, that's your User account name and you're not able to change it. If you haven't spent much time setting up your account and importing data into it you could set up a new account, enter the short name you prefer, switch to it, and then delete your current account.
The name appended with "iMac G5" is your network ID name, and easily changed, as are the rest. Apple is simply trying to be helpful by putting a hardware ID tag in there for you - if you don't like it it's history. As for leaving off the "s" I believe that is simply truncation to maintain the best interoperability with older Macs and Windows systems - once again you can change it, but probably not make it any longer.
A true networking guru - which I am certainly NOT - may have more & better info for you. But as far as I know the short name is the only one you're stuck with. Hope this helps.

  • Kernal Panic Issue

I just installed Snow Leopard 10.6 from Apple's Install DVD on a brand new HD (I did this from another Mac via USB)
I then installed that HD into my wife's iMac (2007, model identifier 7.1). I also upgraded the RAM from 2 to 4GB. All seemed to go very smoothly. It booted up perfectly. Just like a new Mac (welcome animation).
I used Software Update and updated system software to 10.6.5, using the Combo update. Rebooted perfectly.

I started changing preferences, adding printers, etc. All was fine.
Then I started getting a VOLLEY of error messages, many of them in a row, necessitating many OK enters. This happened after changing sharing privileges:
"Impossible to use the system extension. The extension system "/System/Library/Extensions/IOPCIfamily.ketx" has not been installed correctly and cannot be used. Try to reinstall it or contact the producer for an update"

Again, this type of message appeared many times about a large number of extensions. It seemed to go away.
Then with the computer shut down, I plugged in a Firewire 800 external hard drive (powered down) to prepare to bring in her data. I rebooted and then I got the following grey screen Kernal Panic message:
panic(cpu0caller 0x55bfa5) "Unable to find driver for this platform ACPI " SourceCsche/xnu/xnu-1504.9.17/iokit/Kernel/IOPlatformExpert.cpp:1389
I keep getting this message, even with the external HD not connected. I put the old RAM back in, assuming the new RAM might be bad. Same problem.
It will not let me start up from Apple System DVD! It kicks out the DVD and shows the grey screen Kernal Panic messagemessage.
I cannot start up using SHIFT key or COMMAND-S key or the COMMAND-V key to use the "fsck -fy" command. Nor can I do a hardware test by holding down the D key at startup. Nor does a PRAM reset help.
    Any help with this?

The initial error you described sounds like the result of a badly performed update:
Frank Cioffi1 wrote:> "Impossible to use the system extension. The extension system "/System/Library/Extensions/IOPCIfamily.ketx" has not been installed correctly and cannot be used. Try to reinstall it or contact the producer for an update"

This is the message you get when the owner/permissions of a kext are not correct (usually when someone manually installs a kext without repairing permissions).
panic(cpu0caller 0x55bfa5) "Unable to find driver for this platform ACPI " SourceCsche/xnu/xnu-1504.9.17/iokit/Kernel/IOPlatformExpert.cpp:1389
I haven't seen this before but it sounds like it is related... the problem is to do with accessing things, (permissions)
What exactly did you change when you say "changing sharing privileges"?
Also when booting from the install DVD make sure it's actually trying to boot from the DVD by ether holding down "c" as soon as you press the power button... or holding down "option" aka "alt" and then selecting the DVD from the boot menu.
