Grey lock when I hold option on startup

When I hold down Option on boot up, it loads to a grey screen with a dark grey padlock. Under that is a password entry field then a dark-grey circle with a right pointing arrow. I've tried every password I can think of but it does nothing. When I click enter the password just dissapears.
How do I fix this?
I wish to be able to select which disk I want to boot from when I hold down option.
Thanks in advance

Thanks Linc,
I managed to find another post by the user Don Archibald which solved the problem.
Here is a link to the article: How to Disable a Firmware Password in OS X 10.6 | eHow.com
Pretty much this will work if you are able to boot the HD and have a copy of Snow Leopard.
(I have OSX Lion and the SN disk worked for me).
Put in the disk, open terminal and type 'open /Volumes/Mac\ OS\ X\ Install\ DVD/Applications' then it will open to a folder then select 'Firmware Password Utility' which allows you to re-set the FW password.
Very handy!
Sorry, I'm new to this forum and didn't know how to close the question.
Thanks

There are two choices of selected start up disks:Main HD and Recovery HD, appearance without hold down option key.  On the other hand, it start up normally show apple picture when I hold option key.

    Hi artdiva28
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
First go to *System Preferences > Startup Disk* > select the *Mac OS X 10.5. on Macintosh HD* > click the Lock > hit the Restart button.
Then if the iMac is still having trouble starting up, insert your Install Disk and restart holding the Option key. In Startup Manager select the Install Disk and boot into it, choose your language, skip the Installer and go up on the menu bar to Utilities and open Disk Utility. In Disk Utility select your Macintosh HD and hit the Repair button. Once finished note any errors and what was repaired for future reference. Quit Disk Utility and restart once again holding the Option key boot back into the Macintosh HD and eject the Install Disk.

  • How do I restore my iphoto from external time machine if it isn't appearing when I go back to other dates? I can open the old library when I hold option, but it can't get it to stay.

    Please help.

For TM questions there is a TM forum
In general you launch Time machine and go back in time to the time you want - select the iPhoto library (by default in your pictures folder) and click restore
What is the reason you are trying to restore an older iPhoto library?

  • Why is my mac mini server apparently looking for wireless while I hold option at startup?

Besides the Lion recovery partition on my Mac Mini, I have 2 partitions:  One with Lion and one with Snow Leopard Server that I often boot from in order to test some things.  However, it takes FOREVER at the gray screen while I hold option, until the various startup disks appear.
There is a spinning wheel next to a popup menu button, and the wireless symbol.  The Mac Mini is apparently looking for wireless for some specified time, then finally gives up and says, "Ok, here are your disk partitions."  This is very annoying, and I would like to know what it is, and how to turn it off.  My Mini is plugged into Ethernet.

Are there any Mount points setup or listed in Login Items?
Might try a variation of this from older OSes...
This command adds a delay, in this case 45 seconds, before displaying the Login Window.
defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow StartupDelay -int 45
If the Login Window UI detects that the network servers are available when it starts, it will skip the delay, also if network servers become available before the delay expires, the Login Window UI cancels the delay and displays.

  • Can only boot restored partition by holding option during startup

So I had installed bootcamp previously and I partitioned my hard drive, and then just recently I restored my partition, and ever since then, every time I restart my computer, if I don't hold down the option key, then my computer will still attempt to boot the windows partition, and all it will do is show a black screen that says "No bootable device found". Is there any way to fix this or do I have to hold option every time I restart my computer?

    Hi,
will window updates turn the default booting OS back to Window?
cause i had a firmware locked down my startup options. And my bootcamp isn't successfully installed onto my window.
So i was thinking about this alternative: for once i set my default os into mac os then everytime if i wanna access to windows, i will go through mac then into windows. And at the end of the day after i shut down my window i could still boot up in mac. Is this idea feasible.
    Thanks alot.

  • HT201257 What does -2105D mean when I hold Option D?

In trying to run hardware diagnostics on a Macbook Pro running Lion when I hold down D the laptop just boots normally to the filevault login icons. So I tried Option D to try and get to the internet hardware test. I get the image of the earth with the exclamation mark. Below it says apple.com/support -2105D. I tried googling that error with no luck.

No, you don't have a virus, but if that folder has a flashing '?', it means your Mac can't find its' system:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1440
    or, other possible causes:

Take a look at those and see if any of those suggestions help.

  • I recently created a new iPhoto library, why does it now show 2 iPhoto libraries the same and 1 being my new one when I hold option and open iPhoto at the same time?

I recently created a new iphoto library. It seems now that when I hold down the option key and open iphoto  I now have 2 iphoto libraries (both the same library) as well as my new library which is now my default as I intended but why would I now have 2 listed the same in this box? When I go to finder>pictures there is only the 2!! I hope I am making sense!

Try the following to see if you can get rid of the ghost:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Lion and Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
    Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE 1: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

  • Can't select after holding option on startup

When I startup holding down the option key, the boot selection screen appears but the mouse no longer changes to a pointer so I'm unable to select something. All I see is the animated clock.

Sounds like you have a problem with your hard drive/OS X. I suggest as a start you try this:
Boot from your OS X Installer. Be sure to use the installer for the version of OS X you have installed. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (or Utilities menu if using Tiger.) After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (3.0.3 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.1.1 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Windows partition does not appear when i hold option on start-up

Hi, about a week ago when I was trying to burn a DVD on my windows XP (home edition SP3) i noticed my computer was getting hotter than normal so i shut it off normally (the whole start shut down setup). So after it had cooled down i tried to boot to the windows but the drive didn't show up on start up. I then started up Mac OS X and saw that the drive was still there. I then ran disk utility to repair and check for errors on the windows drive and it came up with no error. I can still access the files and read them from the drive.

Can you please run the following in terminal and post the output in your reply:
diskutil list; echo; nvram -p | grep boot-args; echo

If I remember correctly, Bootcamp needs an NTFS partition for Windows in order to work correctly. This is the default file system for WindowsXP. The Bootcamp assistant tells you during installation that a FAT32 partition already exists and, curiously, gives you the default selection of leaving this intact. You need to ignore that and format using NTFS. If you don't, then Windows wont boot. To convert to NTFS, you will need to run the assistant again and reinstall Windows.
To overcome the problem of data portability between WinXP and OSX, I use a small 30 gig USB external drive formatted using FAT32 as a bridge between the two. Hope all this is useful?

  • Holding C at startup doesn't work

Since the new OS X was ****, I'm trying to format and reinstall Snow Leopard, but when I hold C during startup(with the Snow Leopard CD inside), nothing happens! I see the Apple logo, but nothing else happens. How can I format it then?

Thanks, none of those worked, unfortunately, but CMD+R worked The problem is that I can't install Snow Leopard from that menu though, but I was able to format it. So I think I'll just install linux now.

  • Why my Startup Manager does not appear when I hold the Option key when starting to boot.

I no longer have the Startup Manager appearing when I hold the Option key when starting to boot.
Instead, the system just boots into whichever OS was last selected in the Startup Disk Preference.
How to get back my Startup Manager so that I can boot up from my external hard disk.
    Thank you.

Provide the computer's firmware password. If you don't know what it is, contact the person you got the computer from or Apple.
