Grey progress bar when booting up loop
When I boot up my computer, the grey progress bar below the apple logo appears. It gets to the very end of the bar and then my computer shuts off. When I turn it on again, the same thing happens. Is there any way to fix this?
Windows doesnt do the same system checks that OS X does, so thats why you wont get the issue witthin Windows.
After you replace the drive, you should be able to put it in an enclosure and then migrate the data over to the new drive.
As far as your Windows partition. You may be able to use Winclone (www.twocanoes.com) to image and restore it. I don't know if it will work though when the drive is connected externally.

Deep Sleep - Is it normal to show a grey progress bar during boot?
I've just downloaded the Deep Sleep widget from Axionic Labs. So far, it works wonderfully.
I really like the idea of Deep Sleep. No power consumption, quick boot and same state it was before Deep Sleeping.
However, I noticed that when I power my MBP on (after Deep Sleeping) it shows the grey boot screen with a grey bar below being filled. Actually, it's several small grey bars being filled.
Is it normal to show those grey bars when your MBP is booting after a deep sleep?

Progress bar when booting after Yosemite install
I Updated my MacBook to the Yosemite. Everything seems to work fine with the exception of booting......When I turn it on it shows me a gray screen with the apple logo and a progress bar like it's loading something. It never did that before.
Is this his normal with Yosemite ???

Since a few days, whenever I reboot my MacBook Pro, there is a progress bar underneath the Apple logo.
It takes aprox. 5 min now to boot (very slow!), not that normal I guess.
I already tried to repair the hard drive with the disk utility, but it failed. I ran a hardware test also, but everything seems to be alright.
Anyone with some solutions, or experience with this?
Btw, there appears to be a "lost+found", and "damages files" folder on my harddrive now..

My Mac Pro restarted several time last night due to power outages during a storm.
Now when I boot it there is a progess bar under the spining wheel on bootup.
Boot process takes longer then usual as well.
How can I fix this?Almost seems like it is stuck in a loop of starting to Safe Boot. Try resetting the PRAM and SMC.

Macbook Pro get grey progress bar and shuts down
Hello All,
I have a macbook pro and I faced this issue out of nowhere. After shutting down the system last time, when I started the system, I could hear the apple chime, apple logo appeared with grey progress bar below it. The bar will progress to 1/3 or so and it will disappear and after few seconds laptop will shut down. I tried few times but same things was happening again and again.
After going through few support forums, I booted by pressing D to run the Apple hardware test. It wouldn't do anything at all. Apple hardware test was stuck at pass number: 1 with elapsed time of 7 seconds. All retry were the same as the first one.
I rebooted the laptop and pressed command + R and entered in recovery mode/recovery disk. I clicked on Disk utility and select Macintosh HDD and started disk verification. I got hundreds of errors/warning, saying Missing thread recode (id = XXXXXXX) and it suggested to repair the disk. I tried to repair the disk but after similar message, pop window appeared with message that disk cant be repaired. I exited out of it and went back to recovery menu.
I selected Reinstall OS X Mountain Lion and went through steps and at the point where I have to select my HDD, there was just one option and I couldn't select it. It gave message that This HDD is locked. I can't start in safe mode, and can't reinstall OS X
I believe this is because of my hard drive might have crashed. can anyone help?

If your machine is under AppleCare or warranty you can take it to them.
If you can user service your machine, you can opt to try to see if a new drive will work and install it yourself, or have a local geek do it for you. -
After waking from sleep, my Macbook Pro shows grey progress bar
I have the mid 2012 Macbook Pro (13 inch). When I leave it open and let it fall asleep after the time I have chose, it wakes up again fine.
But if I choose the sleep from the Apple in the menu bar or SHUT the lid, when I wake it up, it shows the grey progress bars and takes about 3-4 minutes before it is responsive again.
Any advice? I'd just like it to sleep normally. It's a bit embarrassing to have to wait that long if I'm trying to show off how cool my laptop is

Thanks for any help!This was added to all 2012 model MBPs as part of some bs Euro power saving standard. By default, when on AC power, the system has to sleep for 14400 seconds before this deeper hibernation state happens. When that happens, the system takes a while to resume to normal operation. There is a workaround for this and it is available on this site, but I urge you to call AppleCare and complain about this issue yourself please because without a lot of complaints about it, Apple won't fix it. The workaround is to simply issue a command in a Terminal prompt that disables this option from happening, but it's not a fix by any means.

My late 2009 27" iMac gets stuck on the grey Apple logo when booting up. It boots correctly when in safe mode. I have tried erasing the HD and re-installing from a USB installer. It says the install is complete, but after restarting it gets stuck on the Apple logo again. This could possibly be an HD failure, but then why does Safe Mode still work and the USB install not work? Any ideas?
1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with "Model Identifier." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Gray progress bar on boot twice now
I've experienced a gray bar on boot twice now. I upgraded to a 2011 MBP and transferred my 500 GB Toshiba SSD from last year's MBP into the new model, into the SuperDrive slot using a MCE OptiBay (I put the existing SSD into the OptiBay since the SuperDrive's SATA channel is 3Gbps and the Vertex III I have on order is 6Gbps and will use the system's primary SATA channel). The drive has worked flawlessly for a year, and Disk Utility reports no errors, but Googling the issue indicates that the gray progress bar appears when fschk is checking the drive. I've noticed that my wallpaper has been slow to appear on both occasions, defaulting to the OS X default for a few moments after I log in.
I'm concerned that my drive is going bad, but cannot find any indication that this is the case beyond the intermittent gray progress bar on boot. At least one time after boot the progress bar occurred after a Software Update (Security and Safari). My system's logs also give me no indication what the problem might me. Both packages have been installed for a couple of yours without issue. Also, both apps produce these errors on normal boots as well. I wonder if the errors have to do with the fact that the applications weren't installed on the OS, rather they were already present after I put the old HD in the new system and "upgraded" the OS in place using the system disc that came with the new laptop in order to have the Sandy Bridge drivers installed.
I was hoping you or someone might spot something slightly more definitive in the logs. The time gaps are definitely interesting to me. I think I'll see if I can turn on verbose logging and get any more telling information. Thanks for your help! -

I tried to update the software overnight, and it was still in the beginning stages of the progress bar when I woke up. When I restarted the process I have to restore the phone, its again stuck in the beginning of the process. Does anyone know how long this should take? The beginning sections seemed to fly by.

Grey progress bar on start, then shut down.
So I have a 27" iMac (mid 2011 I think, but not 100% sure) that's unhealthy.
My wife had been using the machine for a few weeks. At some point it rebooted, and when it did, it got stuck at what looks possibly like a firmware update screen?
When it powers on I get the normal chime, followed by grey screen, followed by the Apple logo, followed by a progress bar.
The progress bar runs until it gets about 1/16th of the way across the screen, then powers off.
- I've reset PRAM/NVRAM and SMC. I know NVRAM was reset because on next boot the screen resolution and default volume changed.
- It doesn't allow be to boot off other drives/volumes (option on start or C), and trying to start in single, verbose, or safe mode doesn't seem to do anything. Or in Recovery mode.
- If I try to start in target disk mode (hold T on start) it will enter that mode. If I try to start hardware diag mode, it tries, but if this system came with a hardware test disc, I don't have it anymore. Then it just proceeds to try booting again.
I'm assuming it's trying to do an EFI update, but that's failing for some reason. I've read that doing a firmware restore will help, but Apple doesn't seem to produce firmware restore disks anymore? I definitely don't see one available for download.
Any thoughts?Do you have another Mac with Firewire to look at the iMac Drive or try to Repair it when it's in t mode?

Progress bar on booting up Yosemite
My iMac (11,2) and old Macbook Pro (4,2) now show a 'progress bar' below the logo when booting up.
Is this normal, or does it indicate something 'wrong' requiring additional tests etc to boot?
If the latter, what should I do?

No Progress Bar when importing from Camera
I just updated to iLife 06, and I noticed when I was importing new photo's into iPhoto 6, that the progress bar does not move. The photo's import fine, but I have no idea of the approximate time it will take, since the progress bar never shows up.
Has anyone else seen this? Is there any pref files I can clean out to see if I can get this feature back?

- BruceWell, I just imported 10 photo's and the progress bar worked. My previous import where the progress bar did not work, had 125 photo's, with two of them locked. I have removed the locked photo's, and removed the regular photo's, and now the progress bar works. I do not know if it was because there was 125 photo's or if it was because I had a few locked photo's, but now it seems to be working.
I will test things out by locking some more photo's and seeing if the progress bar shows up when I import. I also chose to delete the original photo's after importing them.
Has anyone else imported a lot of pictures, and had a few locked on the camera, and noticed if the progress bar works or not?
