Grey question mark - Internet recovery error 6002F

Hey. I've been having major problems with my Mac book air which was brought in early 2012.
After trying to install mountain lion it's been going crazy. At first there was problems with installing or updating applications, then it wouldn't turn on! Now it's coming up with a grey screen with a question mark in a file. I've read on forums that I should do an Internet recovery by pressing option! However it's coming up with an error code after connecting to wifi and pressing that arrow to go into Internet recovery. It comes up with a ! In a globe saying apple.com/support. -6002F
Someone help? Any ideas. I don't think it's a corrupt hard drive!!

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3516137?start=0&tstart=0
I've seen this issue twice and the resolution differed each time:
Scenario #1 - Required an SSD/HD replacement, the drive had significant directory damage that could not be repaired.
Scenario #2 - One of the RAM DIMMs was failing, as the machine was not a MacBook Air replacing the defective DIMM resolved the issue. In this case with the MacBook Air you can't replace the DIMM as it is soldered to the logic board.
Is this unit under warranty or covered by the AppleCare Protection Plan?

  • Macbook Pro - Folder w/Question Mark; Internet Recovery

    Hello everyone,
I have a 13" Macbook Pro that I purchased (new) in February 2013.
Yesterday I was working on it with an external mouse plugged into one USB, a bicycle light charger plugged into the other USB, and an external monitor connected in that port with the Apple connector, plus the power cord was plugged in. I had Word documents open, an Excel doc as well, plus iTunes running, and I had Chrome open as my browser. I had to quickly leave so unplugged all of them quickly, then closed the cover.
A few hours later when I opened the computer I had no cursor. I gave it a few minutes to "wake up" but nothing happened. I then turned the computer off with the power button. When it came back on I had a folder with a question mark and it was blinking.
In looking through the discussion forums, I tried holding down the Control button. This too me to Internet Recovery. Now I'm at the OS X Utilities and it has four options: Restore from Time Machine, Reinstall OS X, Get Help Online, or Disk Utility.
I back up the computer frequently with T.M. to an external HD, but I'd rather not erase the HD and start over.
I have seen some suggest resetting the PRAM when this issue occurs. As the computer was not dropped, I hope it was more of an overload issue when I unplugged so many things at once and shut it down.
I am definitely not a skilled computer fixer, so wanted to see if anyone with more knowledge could offer the best steps to take.
    Thank you!

The folder with question mark  means your firmware doesn't know what or where is your volume it's supposed to boot from normally.
1: Shutdown the machine by pressing and holding the power button.
2: Press and hold the option/alt key down. Boot the machine.
3: Startup Manager appears and hopefully your boot drive (along with RecoveryHD) appears, select your boot drive and click the arrow.
4: In System Preferences, set your statup disk again. Done.
    Folder with question mark issue
If this fails to work, then do reset the NVRAM and try the steps above again.
If your boot volume fails to appear, then your OS X is corrupt and is not recognized as a bootable option, but it can be fixed.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
The worst thing is your boot drive is dead, lets hope you have backups of your data off the machine.

  • I have installed new hard drive to iMac intel 2007 model and all I get on the screen is a grey question mark, tried system disk and now that's stuck in drive and just spinning around, any help please

Sorry put all question on subject line. As I said fitted new hard drive, but all I get is a folder with a flashing grey question mark. Tried system disk but that is now just spinning around in DVD drive and I can't get it out. Any help with these problems would help

Sounds like the new drive is not being recognized. Could be it's a SATA3 drive with a 6Gb/s transfer rate and needs to be jumpered down to 3. But if the 2007 is 1.5, it may not work at all, even if jumpered down. Other possibility is a not properly secured cable or a cable that's come loose from the logic board.
What is the model of the 2007 Mac? What's the new drive? Did you do the installation or was it done by a shop?
You can find your model here. Look next to Standard Hard Drive:

  • Grey question mark in harddrive window

On my iMac OSX10.4.8, When I open the Macintosh HD window, either from the desktop or the dock, a large, static, grey question mark appears at the top of the window on the mettalic looking window frame, just to the left of the small (spotlight?) search panel with a magnifying glass icon.
Everything seems to be working ok, but there is obviously an underlying problem.
Does anyone have any suggestions about this? All advice gratefully accepted.

I'm not exactly sure of what you are seeing have you tried clicking on the question mark to see what happens? Is there any way you could take a screen shot and post it?

  • Grey Question mark appeared at top left of all windowws

There has suddenly appeared a large grey question mark at the top left of all windows, for example, the main HD window and all the folder windows.
The finder text font is also different to how it was before.
I thought upgrading to Leopard might have fixed it but it is still there.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks everyone.

    Buckminster, welcome to Apple Discussions.
I note that you are using Leopard on a Powerbook G4. This forum is for G4 desktops. You are more likely to get an answer if you post in the Leopard 10.5 forum @ http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=235

  • Blinking folder with question mark! Recovery mode not recognising hard drive!

So today on my MacBook Pro 13" mid 2010, for some reason a CD that I inserted inside the DVD/CD drive didn't come out, and was stuck inside. So I looked up on how to force eject it out, and I saw someone wrote that you can force eject the CD by putting a paper clip inside the hole next to the CD/DVD drive. I did this, and it did not work. After I turned on my MacBook Pro and on the startup I found the blinking folder with question mark! I went through Internet recovery mode, and I found out that it did not recognise my hard drive!
-Do I have to replace my hard drive?
Please help! I'm fairly new with computers :(

That was for very old Mac's and PC's, it's been a long time since any modern Mac had that ability.
CD that I inserted inside the DVD/CD drive didn't come out, and was stuck inside.
Press and hold the power button down to force a hardware shutdown.
Hold the trackbutton down and the option/alt key at the same time, now boot the machine.
The disk should spit out and you should eventually see a row of icons appear on the screen, this is Startup Manager and you can pres the eject key here also to get the cd to spit out.
If you see MacintoshHD (or your OS X boot volume) click it and the arrow underneath and when you get into OS X, head to System Preferences > Startup Disk and set it again. Your problem should be resolved at this point.
If you don't see your OS X boot volume and it shows RecoveryHD only, or holding the option/alt goes to Internet Recovery, then your boot drive is dead or there is some sort of other issue/power /Mac related.
Try a #1 SMC Reset and a #2 PRAM reset and see if that fixes things.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
If not, I then suspect because you couldn't eject the cd that something electrical bad happened to the Superdrive and as a result it also effected the power or something going to the boot hard drive.
The hard drive might still work just fine if it's removed from the machine and a SATA to USB adpater to another Mac.
My advice is to take the machine to Apple for a free hardware evaluation, then decide what you want to do from there.

  • IMac Intel 20" - Flahing grey question mark folder

I would appreciate any help with this one.
I have an iMac Intel 20" (EMC 2133) which froze on me about a week ago. I couldn't get any response and so decided to restart it via the power button. It powered up to the grey screen with the flashing question mark folder. I tried restarting it a few more times throughout the day and a couple of times managed to get it to boot up and log in. On those occasions I quickly copied my important documents onto a portable HDD before the iMac foze again. I also attempted to run disc utilites but it just froze up.
From the grey screen, I initially tried the following:
    1. Inserting the install disc
    - the iMac simply ejects any disc that is entered
    2. Running the iMac in target mode on another mac
    - Does not appear to exist
    3. Running a portable disc drive in target mode with the install disc
    - When starting the iMac holding alt, only the cursor appears
    4. Resetting PRAM and SMC
The HDD was making clicks and squeals so I presumed this would be the problem and took it out to test it. I attempted to run this in target mode in my brother's caddy and it didn't appear. It also didn't appear in Disc Utilities. I then bought a new Seagate Barracuda 1Tb 7200.12 Hard Drive to replace it:
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/1tb-sgate-st31000528as-sata
This has now been installed and I am experiencing the exact same problem.
Does anyone know what could be causing this?
Could it be something to do with the logic board or the RAM?
It seems strange that the 1st HDD would pack up (make dying noises and fail to mount via the caddy) along with something else at the same time. It also seems unlikely that the new HDD could be faulty.

OK, I ran my iMac in target mode from my brother's computer (the one thing I'd not retried since installing the new HDD) and it found the new hard drive I installed OSX from there and its now fine.
However, when I went to insert my software installation discs they were 'auto-ejected'! So it does in fact look like the HDD and the Optical Drive both decide to die together (how thoughtful of them). So that was the problem after all.
Luckily I have a portable DVD drive so I'm at least up and running for now.
We got there in the end. Thanks for everyone's input I'll now look into fixing the optical drive!

I Hv accidenty delete the partation of mac hdd   Then  we are trying to internet recovery  my mac book air shows me error 2003f   Soo whats i do for recovery

    Try OS X Recovery.
Startup your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys.

Read before proceeding >  About OS X Recovery
Macs no longer come with restore discs.

  • Blinking Folder with Question Mark+ No recovery disk

I've been using  an original Mac Mini loaded with 10.5 for a long time, just keeping my music collection for the most part, Not too long ago, I restarted it after is froze up only to find that it now wasn't going to let me in, just give me the blinking folder with a question mark. I've done a lot of looking around and found that the obvious next step is to pop the recovery disk in and find a work around and get back in to sort things out. Unfortunately I seem to have left my disks back home in another state, so I have no access to said disk. What do I do? I don't know anyone who could have disks for OS 10.5 or anything that far back. What should I do? Can Apple help me, or do I have to hunt one down on ebay or something?
Please and Thanks for the help.

Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. They may be able to help. The appointment is free. The hard disk may have died.

  • Internet recovery error code "4403f"

i searched for solution for this issue and no one answer it. and i wish someone well..
so my problem is that i don't have an recovery HD so when i use the internet recovery it gives me ("apple.support" with code 4403F) and stuk ..
plz don't just read my probelm .. find me an answer plz .. thank you very much

tee144..  first that just isn't a nice answer..   Bashing someone for not knowing something is just wrong.  and I was always told if your not part of the solution your part of the problem.
Second..   Alex's post was just about worthless as yours..   Because Googling some words and posting other responses..  ah dah don't mean anything especially when its incorrect
Lastly..  all the other posts on solutions for this PROBLEM - are just wrong and plain shots in the dark.  because it is NOT a firewall or port blocking problem..  period.
I have perfect internet - no firewall..  Spent time on this issue (as I am working on it for a client) by trying several different internet provides at different locations that I own..  result was always the same
So I went further  by checking the traffic with a packet capture..  Apple just is NOT answering back..    the only resolve can come from Apple because my traffic goes out to them and gets no replies..

  • Internet recovery error result: -21 02D. What does it mean?

I was trying to do an Internet recovery due to the frequent freezing in my macbook.
Well, like I said, Internet recovery gave me this result after 30 second or so saying: apple.com/support -21 02D. So, what does it mean ?

It may be a router problem or  a problem was with the type of WiFi protection used.
About OS X Recovery, you must use the WPA or WPA2 on your WiFi for Internet Recovery.

  • Grey question mark at startup on Yosemite?

Aafter installing Yosemite on my 2009 MacBook Pro, a grey folder pops up at the startup and I can't do anything. Any help?
    thank you

    Hi ..
That means your Mac cannot locate a system folder to boot from.
    Shut down your Mac.
Wait about ten seconds then restart while holding down the Option key. That should launch the Startup Manager window where you can select the startup disk.
If you don't see OS X 10.10, the startup disk may need repairing.
Startup while holding down the Command + R keys.
From there you should be able to access the built in utilities to repair the startup disk using OS X Recovery.

  • One Contact Of Several - grey question mark

This contact appears to have been lost due to 6.18.0.106 update.  I have been told this contact has texted me to re-connect but it cannot be viewed.  I also passed through a screen that said Skype is not available at this time", yet I can access my Skype account and other contacts.
How can I re-friend someone whose text messages to me don't show.  Is it because they have first not 're-friended' me so I cannot see anything from them?  Please advise...I have not found answers in the support area for my specific issue with Windows 7 Premium running on my laptop.
    Thanks for your help!!

Will do...sent her another invite before you suggested (forgot to mention) but the text she supposedly sent me has never arrived so I don't see how we can be connected.  As my next best guess is that she is not responding directly to the invitation but sending a message (I am still on her contact list), I will re-send the invitation and ask she respond directly to it.  I hope this works...thaks

Hi and welcome to the Skype Community,
Right-click on that contact on your contact list and select "Re-send contact request". After they have accepted your contact request (again) you should see their online status.

  • White screen with grey folder with question mark?

My Mac froze when I opened iTunes and I turned it off and when I turned it on it was grey an I restarted or and now it's white with grey question mark?? What do I do? I don't want to loose my stuff.

Question (?) Mark, Blinking Folder, or Gray Screen at Startup
These are related but not identical issues. Their causes are outlined in Intel-based Mac- Startup sequence and error codes, symbols. Solutions may be found in:
A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac
Mac OS X- Gray screen appears during startup
In most cases the problems may be caused by:
Problem with the computer's PRAM - See Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM.
Boot drive's directory has been corrupted - Repair with Disk Utility.
Critical system files are damaged or deleted - Reinstall OS X.
The disk drive is physically non-functional - Replace the hard drive.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
The main difference if you are using Lion or Mountain Lion is that you must first boot from the Recovery HD:
    Boot From The Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstall Snow Leopard Without Erasing The drive
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing The Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
