Grey Screen after login- just did OS update

I am using a 15" MacBook Pro, 2011 model.  I just got it back with a new hard drive and it was working fine for 3 days, then I applied the latest Mac OS update. The update caused a restart and that is where my problem started.  When it restarts, the user logon screen comes up and i enter my user name and password and then hit enter.  It accepts it and then a grey screen comes up and just hangs there.
Any ideas?

If this was a problem with OS X or a thrid party at boot kext file, it likely would show up BEFORE the login screen.
Since it appears after the log in screen, that would suggest it's a problem with a auto-launch of a program after the account is logged into.
This is a new resume feature of OS X Lions and it's a problem obviously because you don't know what program is responsible.
At least with manual launching of programs, if the machine crashes you know what program caused it.
What you do is hold the Shift Key down upon boot, this enters Safe Mode and disables these at launch programs which you then go around and update all your third party software.
Disable the "resume windows" feature in System Preferences or use the free TinkerTool until your problem is resolved.
Apple menu > System Preferences > General >
Uncheck “Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps“
You can look at the Console > System Diagnostic log file for a clue what program is crashing the machine.
Once you discover what it is, use the developers uninstall method to remove the program if there is no update available.
To be systematic on repairing your machine look at this User Tip,
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Once we have some idea of what program is causing your machine to crash then it can be replaced with a new copy or sometimes it's the preference file for it has gotten corrupted or a file it's loading and that causes everything to crash once you log in.
If replacing the program with a new copy doesn't fix it, then it's likely it's preference file has gotten corupted and that's not reinstalled fresh when you reinstall the program, it's carried over from the previous install/use of the program.

  • Mavericks grey screen AFTER login on MBP?

    Hi there,
    I've bought a new MBP 13" Retina w. Mavericks installed (december 2013).
It ran like a dream, but when I tried to login via the guest account (for the guest time), it seemed to not go anywhere - freezing (w. the spinner still circling).
I held down the powerbutton until it powered up.
After this, i get to the login screen (w. mine + guest login), but nomatter if I log in as guest or my normal account i end up w. a blank grey screen after.
I've rebooted many times and tried resetting the PRAM, but with no improvement (as the "start process of the boot" is fine, until after the login).
There are no USB's or external things connected.
Any ideas? I did of course not have full backup :-((
    Thank you in advance!!

Try booting into Safe mode (hold down shift while you start up). This takes five minutes to do a Dsik Utility (Repair Disk) then shows a special login screen and demands your username and password.
You can poke around and make sure things look ok. A few things are slower in safe mode, as only the most essential Drivers are loaded.
When you re-boot into regular mode, the start up may take a little longer as it rebuilds a few more things. Let us knoiw if that helps of not.

  • Adobe content viewer grey screen after login on windows 8.1

we're on Windows 8.1, content viewer is not running, after login it shows a  grey screen with just "Adobe content Viewer" on the upper left, but  nothing working....

I'm sorry Neil, I'm working on a folio on Indesign, if I share the folio from Folio Builder (Indesign) to my account, and then I open adobe content viewer on my iPad, I can see the cover of the folio shared and I can download it.
Instead, with the same account on adobe content viewer (windows 8.1), I see nothing and I can not do any action.

  • 10.5.2 Grey Screen after Login (and never goes away)

I installed 10.5.2 late last night on my January 2008 Mac Pro and since hitting 'reboot' to install the update I haven't been able to use my system.
I get to the Login Prompt, login with my username and password, and then all I get is a grey screen with a spinning colored cursor. It was that way still this morning when I woke up, as well as when I got home from work several hours later.
I have subsequently shutoff my machine several times and it still does it everytime I login.. has anyone experienced similar issues and is there a fix besides re-installing from the restore CD?
    Christopher

I read several threads and tried several things and this is what fixed it.
I was able to boot up into single user mode.
I then tried safe mode.. it took about 10 minutes but I got to the desktop after logging in.
I then ran Software update again and it installed "Leopard Graphic Drivers Update". I then rebooted. Now everything works again! Still a pain!

  • Help!  Just did the Update (ML 10.8.4) after receiving a new HD since mine crashed last week, and now my Mac won't let me past the log in screen even with correct password.

Help!  Just did the Update (ML 10.8.4) after receiving a new HD since mine crashed last week and the shop didn't update it back to Mavricks which I had previously done...and now my Mac won't let me past the log in screen even with correct password entered. It just spins like I'm logging in and then goes back to the user log in screen.  I did the process where I restarted and pressed control S and created a new user and password, but once created same issue and can't get passed that screen.
Super frustrated and any help is appreciated!

I have decided to dedicate this thread to the wonderful errors of Lion OSX. Each time I find a huge problem with Lion I will make note of it here.
Today I discovered a new treasure of doggie poop in Lion. No Save As......
I repeat. No Save As. In text editor I couldn't save the file with a new extension. I finally accomplished this oh so majorly difficult task (because we all know how difficult it should be to save a file with a new extension) by pressing duplicate and then saving a copy of the file with a new extension. Yet then I had to delete the first copy and send it to trash. And of course then I have to secure empty trash because if I have to do this the rest of my mac's life I will be taking up a quarter of percentage of space with duplicate files. So this is the real reason they got rid of Save As: so that it would garble up some extra GB on the ole hard disk.
So about 20 minutes of my time were wasted while doing my homework and studying for an exam because I had to look up "how to save a file with a new extension in  mac Lion" and then wasted time sitting here and ranting on this forum until someone over at Apple wakes up from their OSX-coma.
are you freaking kidding me Apple? I mean REALLY?!!!! who the heck designed this?!!! I want to know. I want his or her name and I want to sit down with them and have a long chat. and then I'd probably splash cold water on their face to wake them up.
I am starting to believe that Apple is Satan.

  • I just did an update to 6.0 on Lion. Now when I re-open Safari after closing it by clicking the red button  it re-opens to my home page, not all my previous tabs..  prior to the update it would re-open with all my previous tabs, which is what I want.

I just did an update to Lion  10.7.4 with Safari  6.0. Now when I re-open Safari after closing it by clicking the red button,  it re-opens to just my home page, not to all my previous tabs as it did before the update.  I prefer having my old tabs re-open.  How can I fix this?

I've had what I think is the same problem since the most recent software update.  I have Lion 10.7.4 and have updated to Safari 6.0.  The most noticeable difference is that where previously I had two boxes at the top of the Safari window (one to enter URL addresses, one for Google searches), there is now only one box for both functions.  I don't like that as well, but I can live with it.  However, since the most recent software update my "back button" only works about 5% of the time. Most of the time it is grayed out.  So I usually can't get back to previous pages using the back button.  Also, when I've clicked a link that opens a new window (for instance, going through the return process at Amazon, I clicked UPS locator and it opened a new window), where in the past I would have just clicked the red button after I had the information, the UPS locator window would have closed, and I would have been back at Amazon - now if I close the UPS locator window, all Safari windows close.  The Safari application doesn't close, but the Amazon window closes, I'm back to an empty screen, and I have to open a new Safari window and reenter everything.  I'm using a work-around of clicking on History and selecting the description of the window I want to get back too, but that only works part of the time. In the Amazon example, that's what I did once I had the UPS info, but even though I clicked the correct window description, it took me back to the beginning of the return process & I had to reenter all the info.  Of course, that info was easy to reenter, but if I'm in the middle of a complicated process, it's a big problem.  I've filed a bug report; I surely hope the Apple engineers are able to fix this.  I'm used to using the back button function a lot!

  • IPhone is at a grey screen after flashing for a few minutes

My iPhone is at a grey screen after flashing at the same screen for a couple of minutes.
I can turn my screen on and off, phone functions and siri both work. The screen is just grey, no error messages or anything.
This happened after I was trying to connect to a wifi hotspot and I was typing something into a field when it froze, flashed for a few minutes, and stayed on a grey screen. This has been going on for about an hour and a half.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Brialex119,
If your iPhone is flashing with a grey screen, I would suggest resetting the device and resetting the network settings.  If that does not resolve the issue, then you may need to back up to iCloud and restore it.
Restart or reset your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

iOS: Wi-Fi settings grayed out or dim - Apple Support
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204324
    Restart your iOS device.
Make sure that airplane mode is off by tapping Settings > Airplane Mode.
Reset the network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
This will reset all network settings, including Bluetooth pairing records, Wi-Fi passwords, VPN, and APN settings.
Make sure that your device is using the latest software. To do so, connect your device to your computer and check for updates in iTunes.

  • KDM - Black screen after login

    heya,
I just did an update of my Arch Linux system (Arch64) last night (2009-12-19), and now it appears that KDE won't start. I have KDE-mod installed (KDE 4.4 Beta 1), and the hardware is a Lenovo X200 Tablet PC.
On bootup, it will go to the KDM screen fine. However, if you attempt to login, the screen goes black, and caps-lock doesn't seem to work. Also, going to a console login also seems to go to a black screen as well, caps lock also non-functional. I tried moving my .kde4mod config folder away, still the same thing.
From memory, I think there were some updates to hal (?) or xorg-input (?), but I can't be certain. There weren't any updates to any KDE-mod packages, and there haven't been any changes/updates to that since the KDE 4.4 Beta 1 release around two weeks ago.
I've put up my Xorg.log and kdm.log here:
    http://dpaste.com/135957/
    http://dpaste.com/135958/
I did see mentions of seg-faults in the logfiles, I'm guessing that's the issue?
I saw another thread talking about segfaults in KDE Plasma, however, I assume this is in plasma, and this guy/girl is actually able to login:
    http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=87134
I also saw another thread about a bad upgrade causing problems with GDM here:
    http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=87122
    http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=87123
and that seems to be fixed with a console-kit upgrade. However, that talks about missing buttons in GDM, and nobody there mentioned issues with KDE.
    Any advice?
    Thanks,
    Victor

    heya,
Gosh, should have waited just a bit more. The consolekit update did come through on the mirror I used, however, I also needed to do a reboot .
So now I'm back in KDE. I did notice that a reboot from KDE seems to take quite a while (a couple of minutes, sitting at a blank black screen). Also, a logout seems to cause KDE to hang (black screen, but sits there for a long time...I eventually just had to power-cycle it). Weird.
    Cheers,
    Victor

  • SAP BPC 10.0 Web Client Blank Screen after login

    Hi ALL,
We are using SAP BPC 10.0 Web Client with Adobe Flash Player 13.0.0.214 with IE 9.0 on Windows 7.0.
We face strange error where on only on certain PC, the BPC web client working.. On other getting Blank/Blank Screen after login (with "movie not loaded" on the adobe flash player).. Both PCs are having the same setting.
Even one of PC which previously working, starting this week suddenly getting the same error.. I have created OSS message and got feedback with also share this problem on this forum.
    I have done several actions as mentioned on several SAP notes )1624267, 1664889, 1681147, 1694871, 1752971, 1798336, 1804221, 1806371, 1811218, 1820505, 1918631, 1968584), but still no luck..
If you have the same issue, kindly share..
    Thanks and regards,

Yes .. Compatibility View also checked.. in several PCs, it is working well. both failed and working PCs have the same setting.
Just found another weird: in one working PC, 2 different windows local-admin users login to the same PC for BPC-web and getting different result (1 Ok ; 1 failed) ..seems it is related with the user profile and login-domain servers (we have multiple login-domain servers with load balancing mechanism).
    Thanks and regards,

  • Stuck at grey screen after reboot

I seem to be stuck at the grey screen after a reboot of my server. Here are the symptoms and I'm wondering if anyone has experienced them before or has some idea of where to look:
    1) Over the last couple of weeks, I've noticed the entire system freezing up for 10-20 seconds. The spinning pinwheel pops up and when my office is really quite, it sounds like either a fan is starting on the system or a hard drive is spinning up. Note that I've turned off all 'spin drives down when possible' in energy savings.
    2) After the 10-20 seconds, a bunch of disk activity occurs and everything goes back to normal.
I've tried repairing permissions, checking for errors with the drive, etc. I've got two drives striped in Raid 0 (yes, the system is backed up--so I'm not worried about loosing data).
After a recent software update, I had to reboot it, and that's where it got stuck. Could be something there for some time, but my server usually runs for months at a time, unless an update requires a reboot.
Thanks for any help or suggestions!

Could you be more specific about what disks you used to boot with and exactly what programs you ran...
I cannot seem to get it to boot from the "Admin Tools" disk using the "D" key.
Also, when booting from the "Mac OS X Server" disk I can access Disk Utility, but do not see Raid Utility anywhwere.

  • APO main screen after login

    Hi all,
I understand APO is  diff. from R/3 .If so,does SAP APO menu has only functionality in APO, or if the main screen after login has all modules (HR accounting etc)?
    Thanks.

    Somnath
Doesn't SAP Marketing manage to confuse everyone, even those who have been using it for 10 years or more!
Just to help clarify for Sona:
Supply Chain Management (or SAP SCM) is split into three parts:
Planning: which is mainly what us older consultants refer to as SAP APO
Execution: Mostly the ECC part and includes what used to be referred to in modular terms as SD, MM, PP,etc
Collaboration: The old ITS server web-portal stuff with suppliers and customers
The term SCM covers all of the above but requires several different servers and systems to give a complete solution.
Have a look at the SAP website to give you an overview of how this all fits together.

  • Hello my MBP 15" stops at grey screen after apple logo disappears

hello, my MBP 15" stops at grey screen after apple logo disappears, what can i do about this? ive tried booting into safe mode but screen turns blue with black lines also tried resetting NVRAM and PVRAM but still stops at grey screen, also tried using applejack, it shows no problems at all, says my disk volume is ok but the screen still stops at grey during start up, havent tried the installation disk thing because i dont have my installation disk with me

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a startup failure is to secure the data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since the last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to start. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
         a. Start up from the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    b. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    c. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
If the startup process stops at a blank gray screen with no Apple logo or spinning "daisy wheel," then the startup volume may be full. If you had previously seen warnings of low disk space, this is almost certainly the case. You might be able to start up in safe mode even though you can't start up normally. Otherwise, start up from an external drive, or else use either of the techniques in Steps 1b and 1c to mount the internal drive and delete some files. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation.
    Step 3
Sometimes a startup failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 4
If you use a wireless keyboard, trackpad, or mouse, replace or recharge the batteries. The battery level shown in the Bluetooth menu item may not be accurate.
    Step 5
If there's a built-in optical drive, a disc may be stuck in it. Follow these instructions to eject it.
    Step 6
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can start up now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
    Step 7
If you've started from an external storage device, make sure that the internal startup volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
Start up in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know the login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you start up in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, the startup volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 10. If you ever have another problem with the drive, replace it immediately.
If you can start and log in in safe mode, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then restart as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the startup process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 8
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select the startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then restart as usual.
    Step 9
Reinstall the OS. If the Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Step 10
Do as in Step 9, but this time erase the startup volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically restart into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer the data from a Time Machine or other backup.
    Step 11
This step applies only to models that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery: all Mac Pro's and some others (not current models.) Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery, if there is one, is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a startup failure. Typically the failure will be preceded by loss of the settings for the startup disk and system clock. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
    Step 12
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
