Grey screen boot up with progress bar every time

The machine been behaving oddly for the past two days, every time I boot up, I get the grey screen with the apple, circle and progress bar. The machine will load but it takes 15 mins+ every single time. Any idea if its hardware or software related?

I don't think it's the shift key, when the laptop is fully booted, everything works great. It's just the boot-up part that it taking 15 mins, like I don't think so, when the laptop is fully booted, everything works great. It's just the boot-up part that it taking 15 mins. I believe leroydouglas is right about it booting into safe boot mode every time. The HD spins really fast at that during the boot up and I'm in the midst of backing up my essential data.
I will try to repair with Disk Utility next. Suggestions are welcomed! Thanks!

  • Booting up with progress bar

I was running Spotify earlier today with a completely dim screen to save battery. The battery died and I just plugged it in and tried to wake it up. I saw the screen for a few seconds and then it went black. Trying to brighten the screen did nothing and neither did pressing the power button. So I decided to hold down the power button and restart. When I did, I got the apple logo with a spinning wheel and a progress bar under it. It's been sitting like that for over an hour with the progress bar not filling at all. What should I do? Should I let it sit like that and see if it fills eventually? Or try to reset the pram?

Try restarting your MacBook Pro in recovery mode (holding down the command + R keys while restarting) then run disk utility on your hard drive to repair it. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1782

  • Opening macbook pro from sleep after some hours, login screen is blurry with progress bar?

I just got my first 13'' MBP three days ago.  Both last night and the night before I closed the lid to put it to sleep overnight for about 7 hours whilst plugged into the AC as to not drain unnecessary power. In the morning when I opened the lid it was on the login page but the screen was blurry and there was a progress bar on the bottom of the screen. My sister has had a MBP for a few months but this has never happened to her. The problem only lasted about 30 seconds but is it normal? Am I maybe doing something wrong?

Did you quit out all of your applications prior to letting the MBP sleep over night?
If concerned, you can either call AppleCare or return the MBP.  You have 14 days from the date of purchase to return and/or exchange w/no questions asked.

  • Gray Boot Screen with progress bar & SMC Issues

    Hi All,
Over the last few days I've experienced the grey boot screen with progress bar three separate times after the finder froze and I was forced to manually reboot my imac. Previously I have only seen this during a Firmware update.
I am also concerned about the Finder freezing. It has been happening when I've been trying to access any of my external hard drives at random intervals (connected via usb, and f800). I am concered that my SMC controller might be failing as these drives are testing fine on other computers and in drive test programs. Also, the f800 drives have been self unmounting.
I had my internal drive replaced by apple a few weeks ago, could they have somehow damaged the smc controller unintentially? Or is this simply a Snow Leopard hiccup? (I'm running 10.6.2). I'm really starting to get annoyed with having to hard reboot or constantly reset my SMC. Any ideas before I take it in to a store?
    Thanks!

I have found other users have this same problem when using windows. My setup worked fine until I did a windows update. Now apple partition is inaccessible. Guess the windows update whacked the apple partition. Apple should have a workaround. Bad Windows!

  • IMac 24 won't start up, grey screen with progress bar, then shuts off

My computer froze all my applications yesterday. When I went to restart it a grey screen came up with the progress bar at the bottom. It would advance about 1/3 and then the progress bar would start over. It would advance about 1/3 again then the computer shuts off. It does the same thing trying to start it up in safe mode. I started it with my snow leopard disk and it will allow me to restore the computer with time machine (which we have), but I wasn't sure if I should try something else before that. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

    Hello:
I would try restoring as an approach to eliminating some software glitch. However, you might also have a hardware problem (not good news).

  • Mac frozen at boot-up screen with progress bar

I was running windows 7 on boot-camp and when i shut off my computer by pressing and holding the power button and then turning it on again and letting it boot to mac os x by itself. It turned on started to boot but a progress bar popped up under the cog wheel and it was taking a while so i shut it off by holding the power button and tried to turn it on again. I turned it on the same thing happened except this time the progress bar disappeared when it was less than 1/10 loaded and the cogwheel kept on turning for the next 15 minutes. Now every time it turns on it does that and won't boot up mac os x. Iv tried to hold the shift key while it boots and tried to boot it up by holding the options key (didn't work...), oh and windows 7 still works in boot-camp. Can i get some help please?

I have asked that your post be moved to the intel forum, you do not have a G5.

  • Help - Grey wheel with progress bar on start up and then Macbook Pro turns of.

So i recently bought a Macbook Pro 13 inch (the lower end). While doing my research i found the smartest thing to have a relatively fast macbook was to increase the ram. I bought http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148345 and installed it in my macbook pro. After starting up the macbook, i got to my login screen. However, everytime the computer would try to start up to my account, i would get a blue screen and then be brough back to my login page for the account. I assumed that the RAM was not fitted properly since my research indicated that it was most likely the problem. I re-installed the RAM sticks with more force but to no avail. Then i even switched the RAM sticks while installing to make sure that either one of my new RAM chips was not faulty but after a while, my MBP refuses to start up. I get the grey apple logo, with a spinning wheel and progress bar. The bar goes a quarter length before the laptop shuts off. I then put it in the original RAM sticks, but the same problem. Apple logo, spinning wheel, progress bar and then powers off. Any suggestions or thoughts as to what may have happened? Thank you!

Last night the electricity went out and my power surge protector was not working so my iMac just force shut downed.
So, when the electricity came back i turned on my Mac but it is *Stuck in the Startup/Boot Screen with a Grey Apple Logo,a Empty Progress Bar with stays for 1 or 2 minutes and a small Spinning Wheel which would Spin Forver! I Have tried the SMC and Pram reset but no use, i have also tried to insert my OS X Lion 10.7 Installation disk and it would not load if i hold the C Key in the Startup, I Have Managed to go to Disk Utility Through "Recovery HD"  but the Volume "Macintosh HD" is Greyed out and Unmounted and i cannot repair it. There are some files that i'd like to Recover if there is a way to fix it without deleting files.
    **PLEASE HELP ME FIX THIS!**

  • Splash screen with progress bar and multiple jar files to load

    Hello,
I have been looking to the new features in java 6 for splash screens. I haven't implemented this never before and i was wondering how i could do the following with java 1.5 or 6:
I would like to see a splash screen with a progress bar that "grows" when every jar file has been read.
At this time i call my application like this from a shell script:
    exec "$JAVA_BIN" -Djava.library.path=$LIBRARIES_J3D -classpath xxxx.jar yyyy.jar zzzz.jar ...
where xxx.jar, yyy.jar and zzz.jar are very heavy jars.
So i would like to see in the progress bar 33% 66% and 100% when they are loaded.
I do not know if this is the right forum to ask for this. If no, please point me which would be the ideal one.
Any help will be very useful. Thanks to all!

  • IMac SLOWLY Starts Up With Progress Bar

Just the other day my iMac has started doing something very annoying: It starts up with a white screen and a gray progress bar, and it takes a long time to start. It does this each time I start it now. I have not added any new hardware/software. Any ideas?

That usually only happens if you had to manually force shut it down. See http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964 for details.

I've been having an issue with assistive touch, every time I open an app. the AT disappears the from the screen and I have to turn it off and ON again. Is there a way to fix this?

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

  • Macbook opens slowly with progress bar below the logo

macbook opens slowly with progress bar below the logo, what's happened can it be fixed and how Yosemite OS
    Thanks

The status bar below the Apple logo in Yosemite is not a bug, its a feature. No need for a fix.
The reason why your MB starts slowly shall be answered if we have more info on your MacBook (RAM, version, etc.)

  • CS3 install silent with progress bar ??

Is it possible to install full CS3 with progress bar showing when the program silently installs?
Install works fine using UI mode Silent and Full, but I can't find andy other options?
My problem is when using the silent install of full CS3, shortcuts are available before the installation is finished. Since the installation takes time, users may click the shortcut before the installation is finished, resulting installation fails.
Using the UI Mode Full is dependent on the users, and not accepted by company.
    -Odesti

We too are in the same boat, we need a progress bar so that our users know that we are deploying the application.
I've tried various random switch for the "UI mode" but none work. There must be others than silent or Full.

I'm running OS X 10.7.5 on my MacBook Air, but I cannot download Mavericks. I've tried downloading after a safe boot, but the progress bar and the download hung up. Any ideas?

It can be a long download, so keep trying. My first download was at 3 am Cupertino time and took less than an hour. The second took close to three hours one evening.

  • Why is location arrow on status bar every time i open lock screen even when nothing running

why is location arrow on status bar every time i open lock screen even when nothing running

    Something is using location services...
Go to Settings>Privacy>Location Services. You can see what, if anything, is currently using location services, and what has used it within the last 24 hours.
An open location services arrow means there is a geo-fenced reminder set.
