Grey Screen Crashes/In 4 different languages

I've been experiencing frequent grey screen crashes and I have to re-install the system software to restart my machine. What are the reasons for this crash? I need direction to solve this problem.
Machine does this while using Adobe CS, InDesign mostly.

  • Grey screen restart in several different languages

My ibook G4 (2005/6) greys out. My friend's computer did the same thing and replaced the airport card and sorted the problem. My apple dealer told me it was logic board? My airport card isn't easily found as the puter is older.
    what do I do.

Hi wickovski, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Grey screen restart in several different languages
That is a Kernal Panic, your dealer may be right. See if it does it trying below.
Could be many things, but it's best to start with these two steps, which may fix it also...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Tiger Mac OS X Install disc , then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, *you must select your language first.)*
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
Safe Boot... holding Shift key down at bootup. Safe Boot is a special way to start Mac OS X 10.2 or later when troubleshooting.

Have you booted off the Install Disk by holding the *d key* down at boot-up, (not the c key), and run the extended Apple HW Test? Some Install disks require holding the Option key at bootup to select the AHT. Some Macs came with separate AHT CDs.
Here's the list and downloads for AHT...

  • After install, many grey screen crashes

I'm getting many system crashes with the grey screen telling me to reboot in about 4 or 5 languages. I originally installed on my 80gb ATA drive which I had my 10.4.x system loaded. After install, it would not start from that drive. I restarted with the install disk and installed Leopard on a smaller drive (18gb SCSI). Once up and running on the 18gb drive, I am experiencing many crashes. I've zapped pram, run disk utility to repair the disks and permissions and still can't keep it running after a period of time. I have tried to reinstall on my 80gb and the install crashes (once with 16 minutes to go).
    Any ideas?????

  • Premiere Elements 8 Grey Screen/Crash

When I attempt to open a saved or new project I get a blank grey screen.  I've been using this program for years and only recently (a few months ago) this has happened.  Also, when I attempt to open organizer it crashes.  I've uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times with no luck.  I'm using an HP Pavilion Slimline w/Windows Vista Home Premium OEMAct.  I've updated my latest NVIDIA driver and do not have MacFee security.  I'm not much of a tech guy so I'd be greatful for any help.  Any other suggestions?

    1. Preview Files. Are you on Vista 32 or 64 bit? In my Windows 7 64 bit, I would go to Libraries/Documents/Adobe/Premiere Elements/8.0 and, in the 8.0 Folder, empty out the Adobe Premiere Elements Preview Files Folder. Do you find such a folder on you computer hard drive?  I am in 64 bit.  I was able to find those files and clean them out.  They were pretty much empty since I recently re-installed the program.
    2. Conformed Audio Files. Here I would go to Libraries/Documents/Adobe/Premiere Elements/8.0 and, in the 8.0 Folder, empty out the Media Cache Files Folder. Do you find such a folder on your computer hard drive? The only two folders in the 8.0 folder is "Preview Files" (now empty) and "Encoded Files" (empty as well)
    3. Conformed Video Files. Here I would go to Local Disk C\Users\Owner\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Common\Media Cache and clean out the Media Cache Folder. - Found these files and cleaned out a significant amount of files.
After that we will be going after the Premiere Elements 8.0/8.0.1 settings file
    Local Disk C
    Users
    Owner
    AppData
    Roaming
    Adobe
    Premiere Elements
    8.0 Folder
and in the 8.0 Folder is the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file that we delete. If that does not work, then we delete the whole 8.0 Folder in which the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file exists. Be sure to be working with Folder Option Show Hidden Files, Folders, and Drives active so that you can see the complete path. - Found file and deleted both the Prefs and then went back and deleted the entire 8.0 folder.  I started up the program and the same issue occured.  I went back through these instructions and the 8.0 folder and Pref file had reappeared - not sure if that is supposed to happen?

  • Grey screen on shut down

Every once in a while when I go to shut down my Mac Pro, it doesn't quite shut down, but instead I get a grey screen that is in several languages, and says to hold down the power button and restart the computer. After I do I get a note that the OS had quit. Everything seems fine after the restart. THis happened about a month ago, but I attributed it then to a laser keyboard and mouse that had been giving me trouble. When I replaced them, the problem stopped, but it happened again last night. Does anyone know what might cause this problem and is it something to worry about.

    Kernel panic.
I'd refer to an FAQ and work through all the steps.
Heat, hardware, RAM, and more common with Leopard but can be triggered by software.

  • Grey screen troubles ??

I have since a couple of weeks the typical grey screen crash happening ...
I thought the last update to Mac OS X.7.3 would have resolved the poblem but today I had it even only while playing Itunes with just mail open
I did the checked the disk permissions and repair many times but all seems ok or it repairs some minor issues ... but all seems pretty ok and still the grey screen keeps coming back
any one having the same thing happening ??

Hello, and thank you. But my iBook won't start up in Safe Mode either. I tried it once and it was at the Mac OS X start up for about an hour. I tried it again and it went to the blue screen again. I'm trying it for a third time, but I'm not positive it is going to work.
update: The third time I tried to start it up in Safe Mode, it stayed at the Mac OS X start up screen. It's been that way for about thirty mintues.
When I move the cursor over the Mac OS X window thing, the cursor turns to the rainbow wheel thing, and when it's not over the Mac OS X screen, it's the regular black arrow.

  • My mac pro crashed. Apple genius people said to reinstall snow leopard. I did and it failed to start after i installed. I started with the power button, tried to install upgrades, and now I get only a grey screen with spining wheel.

How can I restart a mac pro that shows only a grey screen with a spinning wheel. I reinstalled snow leopard (10.6.3) over 10.6.8 because apple genious people said I had problems with my library files after a time capsule crash. I reinstalled but when done I got only a blue screen. I restarted with the power button and tried to insall 10.6 combined upgrades. I got an error message that it could not install because of an error. When I powered down and tried to restart, I get only a grey screen. My optical drive does not open so I can't restart from another source.

Restart, holding down the mouse button. That should eject the disc. Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC.  Then, pop in the install disc, restart with it in again, select your language, and, when the menu bar pops up, select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. select the boot volume and repair the disk.

Shut down your computer and disconnect all peripherals (keyboard & mouse if pertinent) from your computer.  Now reboot.
If the Mac starts up normally, shut it down again and then plug in one of the peripherals (keyboard or mouse first) and start up your computer again.  If it does so successfully repeat the process, adding one peripheral at a time until your Mac acts up.  At that point, disconnect the last peripheral you added, reboot your Mac and search the peripheral vendor's website for an updated driver.
If no driver exists or the problem remain after installing the new driver, try a different cable or a different port on your Mac.
If none of the above works, again disconnect all peripherals from your Mac, hold down the "shift" key to start up in "Safe Boot" mode.
If the Mac starts up correctly, restart without pressing the "shift" key.
If your computer still does not start up properly, shut it down and restart it while holding down the Apple+Option-P-R keys; keep holding "all 4 keys" down until you hear the startup sound "twice."
If none of the above work Disconnect all peripherals from your computer. Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk.
(If Disk Utility cannot repair, you will need a stronger utility (3rd party) - Diskwarrior or Techtool PRO)
    Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751 and restart your computer.
    Remove any 3rd party ram.
Reinstall Leopard - This will install a "fresh" copy Leopard without archiving old system files but leaves the rest of your files in place.
If you still want to restore your computer to factory level...
Start up from your install disc, go to Disk Utility and select the disk and click erase - to securely erase data click Security Options and Erase Free Space which will entirely wipe your disk, overwriting it with zeros so that no data is recoverable.
To restore read the instructions in the Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard - Installation and Setup Guide  PDF

  • Computer won't boot, crashes on Grey screen

I'm using OS Maverick on a PowerBook and my computer crashed while using Safari. On start up it goes to a blank grey screen. I used target to take off all my data. I've created a USB boot disk and it's still crashing on start up. I've tried every start up I can find online, Any suggestion?

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a boot failure is to secure your data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since your last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
         a. Boot into the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    b. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    c. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
Sometimes a boot failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 3
If you use a wireless keyboard, trackpad, or mouse, replace or recharge the batteries. The battery level shown in the Bluetooth menu item may not be accurate.
    Step 4
If there's a built-in optical drive, a disc may be stuck in it. Follow these instructions to eject it.
    Step 5
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to boot, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can boot now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
If you've booted from an external storage device, make sure that your internal boot volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
    Step 6
Boot in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you boot in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, your boot volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 6.
If you can boot and log in now, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the boot process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 7
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select your startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then reboot as usual.
    Step 8
Reinstall the OS. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Step 9
Repeat Step 6, but this time erase the boot volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer your data from a Time Machine or other backup.
    Step 10
This step applies only to older Macs (not current models) that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery. Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery, if there is one, is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a boot failure. Typically the failure will be preceded by loss of the settings for the startup disk and system clock. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
    Step 11
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

  • Mac book air crashed, when restarted it gets stuck on grey screen

I was using my MacBook Air (mountain lion osx) this afternoon as normal when the screen froze on me as if the computer had crashed. After a minute or two I decided to restart it by holding down the power button. The air turned off and back on, and got the the grey screen with the apple symbol as if it was re-booting but has been stuck there ever since?.
Any idea what's happened and how to resolve please.

    Please help

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a startup failure is to secure the data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since the last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to start. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
         a. Start up from the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.” The article refers to starting up from a DVD, but the procedure in Recovery mode is the same. You don't need a DVD if you're running OS X 10.7 or later.
    b. If Step 1a fails because of disk errors, and no other Mac is available, then you may be able to salvage some of your files by copying them in the Finder. If you already have an external drive with OS X installed, start up from it. Otherwise, if you have Internet access, follow the instructions on this page to prepare the external drive and install OS X on it. You'll use the Recovery installer, rather than downloading it from the App Store.
    c. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    d. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
If the startup process stops at a blank gray screen with no Apple logo or spinning "daisy wheel," then the startup volume may be full. If you had previously seen warnings of low disk space, this is almost certainly the case. You might be able to start up in safe mode even though you can't start up normally. Otherwise, start up from an external drive, or else use the technique in Step 1b, 1c, or 1d to mount the internal drive and delete some files. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation.
    Step 3
Sometimes a startup failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 4
If you use a wireless keyboard, trackpad, or mouse, replace or recharge the batteries. The battery level shown in the Bluetooth menu item may not be accurate.
    Step 5
If there's a built-in optical drive, a disc may be stuck in it. Follow these instructions to eject it.
    Step 6
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can start up now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
    Step 7
If you've started from an external storage device, make sure that the internal startup volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
Start up in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know the login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you start up in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, the startup volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 10. If you ever have another problem with the drive, replace it immediately.
If you can start and log in in safe mode, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then restart as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the startup process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 8
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select the startup volume, then run Repair Disk.
Then restart as usual.
    Step 9
If the startup device is an aftermarket SSD, it may need a firmware update and/or a forced "garbage collection." Instructions for doing this with a Crucial-branded SSD were posted here. Some of those instructions may apply to other brands of SSD, but you should check with the vendor's tech support.
    Step 10
Reinstall the OS. If the Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Step 11
Do as in Step 9, but this time erase the startup volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically restart into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer the data from a Time Machine or other backup.
    Step 12
This step applies only to models that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery: all Mac Pro's and some others (not current models.) Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery, if there is one, is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a startup failure. Typically the failure will be preceded by loss of the settings for the startup disk and system clock. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
    Step 13
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

  • I upgraded my Macbook from 4.8 to Snow Leopard 6.3 now it keeps crashing and grey screen of death

Hi everyone i have a Mac Book   2.16GHz   Core 2 Duo, 4GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.  Prior to upgrading my macbook worked like a dream.
I upgraded to 6.3 then straight up to 6.8, had lots of problems with the computer screen going blue, the Mac refrshing itself and me having to type in my passowrd to discover all the applications had shut and my work lost.  Then i started to get the Grey screen of death, resulting in having to hold down the power button to switch off.  Yesterday i got the grey screen and on rebooting i kept getting the grey screen.  So i thought 6.8 might be an issue so i reinstalled 6.3 without doing any software updates.
I have started to get the same problems.  Only this time i can't open word or excel either.  whenever i run disk utilities i keep getting the same extensive list of repairs.  Here they are in case anyone can help.  And below is the last system diagnostic report.  Any help would be gratefully apprecaited.  It doesnt appear to be any particular program that is causing the problem, i thought it was safari but i have stopped using that.  THANK YOU
