Grey screen how to use alternate start up

the info on what my computer has computer is below.
ok so i loaded leopard no problem. the computer is three years old and worked just fine yesterday upon first using leopard. when i booted it from being turned off today i got the gray screen with the apple logo on it, then after 10-15 seconds, the fan revs up as loud as I've ever heard it and it just freezes there.
i've unplugged evertyhing and restarted several times. nada. what i want to try is starting it in some other way... isn't there like a safe mode start or something where i hold down several keys and force it to open in a different way?
and how else can i get it started again before taking it in. the apple care ended last week i would rather try everthing i can think of myself first. if i use the start up disc do i use the leopard one or the tiger that came with it initially?
i have a brand new 24" iMac G5 so this isn't a crisis but i want to use this one as well. what thoughts do you all have.

No such computer. You have an Intel iMac. Intels & G5 are 2 different models.
You will need to repost over in the Intel-based iMac Forums

I have a MacBook Pro bought in dec 2009. Currently has mountain lion osx installed. Worked like a dream until today. Randomly froze, so I restarted it. To find I got a grey screen. It wouldn't start. Also note my DVD drive doesn't work, but mountain lion was installed via App Store anyway.
So here's what I done so far:
tried resetting PRAM - No success
Done disk utility. Disk verified with no errors. I even re formatted disk. - no success starting.
Tried re installing mountain lion via download . It froze halfway installing -no success.
Tried backing up a time machine backup from my USB hard drive. It froze at 1% - no success
Tried booting from safe mode - no success
Tried the command line boot - no success.
    Please someone help!

Sounds like the hard dre has left the building, Died, in the Sh*tter, Gone to the hard drive resting place in the sky.
Buy a new drive connect it to the system with a SATA to USB adapter and see if you can install Mt Lion on that drive connected externally. If you can then the drive inside your system has failed.
Oh Wait!!!! You have the 2009 model. They are known for bad drive to logic board cables. So it may not be the drive itself but the cable going from the drive to the logic board. Do the same as above then if the system runs OK with the new drive connected externally install it in the system and see if it boots. If it does you are good to go. If it doesn't then it is more then likely the cable that hs failed.
I would suggest you also SAVE a copy of that download of Mt Lion and create a USB install drive from it using Lion Disk Maker, once you get your system up and running.

  • How to use alternate payee at the time of P.O

    Hi SAP Experts,
Could you please tell me how to use alternate payee for vendors. At my clients place User wants to make alternate payee for some vendors. I have made Alternate payee as optional entry in vendor master data but i would like to know if i have to make any settings because the user wants to see the alternate payee for vendor when they create a purchase order. Anyone please let me know the detailed steps in defining the alternate payee.
    Kind regards
    Leoni

alternative payee option are available in two ways which are defined in master level at General data (for corporate decisions) or at company code data level (for individual company decisions)
1.You have option to fix one as default always - only one
    2. Alternatively - you have option to select at Doc level - you will be able to define selective few within which u can select at document level.
As payment is linked to Finance level and nothing to do with PO, this will not be available at PO.
    Hope it is clear.

  • Grey screen and clicking sound at start up

Lately when I start up my mac it takes about 6 tries to get it to start. The first few times before it works there is just a plain grey screen and there is a clicking noise being made. Any ideas on what is going on and how to fix this?

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I hope I am not being overly alarmist but I believe your hard disk is set to fail at any moment. Use the computer as little as possible. Get hold of an external firewire hard disk. Connect to the iMac and then boot the iMac from your OS X install disc. Install a fresh copy of Leopard onto the external drive. You can now use the iMac from the external drive only by setting the External drive as the boot volume in System Preferences > Startup Disk.
Now in order of personal value transfer your documents and files across to the external drive. Once you have good backups you should then take a look at Disk Utility (Utilities folder) and see what SMART status the drive is being reported as.

  • ITunes update caused my iPhone to FAIL. I was only wishing to connect to my pc iTunes, then I was told I could upgrade to the latest iTunes for the mobile. Bad idea! I'm abroad, and now I'm stuck in grey screen-- how can I get my iPhone back?

Please help me, I am verging on desperation! I am flying tomorrow, so I was only trying to add some music to my iPhone.
During the process, connected to the latest version of iTunes for Windows, I was asked a seemingly innocent question-- would you like to
update your iTunes for iPhone?  If only I could go back and ignore this question,
But no, I am now stuck in purgatory-- no use of iPhone, at al! -- the upgrade FAILED. Perhaps because I'm in Asia? At any rate,
I was told that I needed to reformat my phone to factory settings (losing all data!) That was the info on the pc. My phone would ONLY display
a phone cord pointing to iTunes (beckoning to connect), but I was connected to the pc already. So I had to click to reformat.
There was no other option, I browsed tha forums, was semi-assured that iCloud would help back me up. I heard about iTools,
but that also proved a dead end.  My phone ended up in this grey screen, where choices are limited. They originally asked if I wanted to connect
with iTunes, but I chose WIFI. I tried many times to "activate" the phone this way, and it always fails. ( I wanted to try activating through
iTunes, but I can't go back to that original option. At times "Connect with iTunes" is only very briefly shown, but disappers before I can select
    it.)
Every time I'm left with the message "Your iPhone (failed) bec. the activation server is temporarily unavailable. Try connecting phone to iTunes"
    But HOW?

    Why did you disconnect it?
You will have to restore it.
Your data is gone if you failed to make sure it was on your computer before updating, as you always should you.

  • Powerbook won;t go past grey screen with apple logo on start up

    Hi
I am getting very stressed, my powerbook g4 won;t go past the grey screen with the apple logo when switched on. I need to sort it ideally without another computer to go through but if that is necessary then I will do it. I have tried the RAM reboot but nothing, there is not even the spinning loading symbol just a grey screen - which it will stay on until I turn it off. Someone please help!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not sure of my OS as I can't turn my comp on, but I am running leopard on it

    Welcome!
First, see if you can boot in Safe Mode, holding the Shift key during startup until you see a message about safe mode. Getting a desktop can take longer because Safe Mode forced some disk checking.s
...I am running leopard on it
Then you should have the install disks. They can be used to boot the computer for repair. Insert the DVD and press and hold the "c" key during startup. That will launch the installer BUT you don't want to reinstall yet. Find the install's Utilities menu and launch Disk Utility. From there you can check the hard drive and make some repairs.
I need to sort it ideally without another computer to go through but if that is necessary then I will do it
That would require that your compute work enough to start in FireWire Target Disk Mode. FWTDM lets your hard drive show up on another Mac as if it were an external drive. You can test by starting the computer and holding the "t" key until you get a blue screen with a big yellow FireWire symbol. Looks like this:
I believe FWTDM's code is in firmware and not on the hard drive , so may let yo uaccess the disk form another computer.

  • Stuck on grey screen with apple logo when starting up?

    Hi,
My Macbook (2009 aluminium unibody (Leopard 10.5.8)) won't boot. When I try to start it up it gives the chime and then gets stuck at the grey screen with the Apple logo and some spinning gear below. I have tried booting with the install DVD and repairing through Disk Utility but this doesn't work. Disk Utility can see the hard drive but none of the partitions on it! This makes me think the hard drive has died.
However, I can still boot to Windows through BootCamp. From Windows 7 I can still see and access files from the Mac partition. So maybe the hard drive is ok and something else needs fixing... SATA cable???
    Other info:
The night before this happened my computer froze when trying to shut down from Windows and I had to force shut down.
The current internal hard drive is only about 4 months old (a bit short for it to be dying already - its a Western Digital 750gb 7200rpm). I replaced the old one as it had stopped working (at least i thought it was the hard drive ). The hard drive I replaced had lasted about 2 years (Seagate 500gb 7200rpm). Maybe the 7200rpm gets too hot?
Any help much appreciated as I really don't want to be reinstalling again.
    Thanks

Boot from the OS dvd and start the install process, but stop immediately after the language selection. (You are not reinstalling.) At this point you will see a Utilities menu. Open Disk Utility, select your start up disk, and click on Repair Disk. When that is done, quit DU and restart.
See if that procedure will let you boot as usual.

  • Grey screen in v9 using Windows 7 64 bit and Serious Error

    Hi,
Whenever I try to create or open an existing project, I get a grey screen with the menu bar at the top.  The majority of the menu selections are disabled.  I also frequently get an error message 'Sorry, a serious error has occurred that requires Adobe Premiere Elements to shut down, We will attempt to save your current project.'
Here's the specs on my system:
Windows 7 Home Premium N 64 Bit OS
    Intel Cpre i5 CPU 750 @ 2.67 Ghz
Installed memory (RAM) 4 GB, 1.99 GB usable
I've had these problems since buying/installing the software earlier this month, however they were intermittant.  I did a complete reinstall this morning and now I get these errors every time.  I should point out that the Radeon graphics card disables control over graphi acceleration.
I need to make a movie for my son's college application this week, so any tips on resolving this would be greatly appreciated.

Another poster recently had an issue where he had 12GB ram installed but windows showed only 8GB usable. He pinned it down to some of his RAM chips not being fully seated in the mother board connectors. As you are also receiving 'usable memory' less than installed memory that may be a good place to start. You can download a free checker here: http://www.memtest86.com/. You can also buy the product on CD, but that's not necessary unless you are unable to create a boot disk from a disk image file.

Really? Want to show me that button or setting that allows that? AFAIK, System Preferences->Security->General->is where you set that when the machine sleeps or screensaver activates. Accordingly, I'm only aware of a hot corner triggering those two options and the behavior remains the same in Lion, even though the prefPane's name is slightly changed.

  • Hangs on grey screen with spinning wheel at start up

Power Mac g4 running tiger hangs on grey screen with spinning wheel (the wheel keeps going tho!) tried resetting the PRAM, PMU, changed the little battery thing on the main board, and starting from tiger dvd and os 9 dvd, dvds just keep ejecting. also tried starting in verbose and safe modes, still the same problem.
I can however access the hd through a network.
    any ideas
    Thanks

The only thing I know is to buy one. Not much help here. I have a collection of OS disks I bought to go along with all the Macs I've had and still have.
You said already that you had reset the PMU, but did you do that according to:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1939
If not, then this may help. The PMU seems to be a miracle part of the OS. You could then plug the HD back in and a miracle will happen. I've read several threads where people kept doing this and all of sudden everything was cured. I think the last one I read, the person recommended holding in the button for at least 15 seconds and then releasing it. I just go by the Apple tech sheets.

  • G5 Grey screen & flashing white square after start-up & unresponsive key.

After pressing the start button on my G5, instead of the usual blue start-up screen I got a grey screen with a small white square with a blue earth-globe, that flashed on & off. This eventually turned into a small folder with a finder face alternating with a ? mark. 10 attempts (over 1/2 hr) at switching on & off got no-where, so I left the grey screen going and after 10 minutes the G5 suddely went into the blue screen loading mode & then my chosen desktop picture. All apps seem to be OK.
I have not had this experience with my 2 year old flat panel G4 & I am wondering if I should do something remedial to prevent this happening again? The question is What? I am relectant to turn the G5 off in case I get a re-run so will leave it to sleep pro tem.
I have had this Mac for about 5 months from new & it has behaved itself until now. I am a novice so would welcome any help.
    Thanks - Terry Wallis.

    Terry,
Personally, I have always put the computer to sleep as I have been told this is less stressful for the hardware than a restart from a cold shutdown. I haven't had any hardware problems with this iMac G3 since new in 2001 so I tend to agree with this practice.
A good FAQ by Dr. Smoke of the X-Lab for OS X maintenance can be found here which dispells many of the maintenance myths that some follow.

  • With DAQmx, how to use AO start trigger for AO/AI synchronization with finite AI sampling

I am a new user to DAQmx and I am trying to synchronize AI (finite samples) with AO in LabVIEW 7.1 using a PCI 6229 card. I want to generate a finite waveform (AO) and, subsequently, collect a finite number of voltage samples (AI). I would like to repeat the AO-AI cycles in a while loop.
Alternatively, I could use an infinite AO generation and collect finite number of voltage samples on AI but always exactly at the same spot of the AO buffer.
Using traditional DAQ and a 6024E card, I used a counter triggered by AO start trigger signal (example attached). I have problems with translating this example into DAQmx.
    Please help!

    Lesley,
Thank you very much for your suggestion. Late last night I actually tried a to use AI start trigger instead of AO start trigger and it worked (since I tried the AI & AO to start simultaneously, it does not matter what triggers what), even in the loop. The devil is in details, as I had to carefully wire the number of data points and what to place inside/outside the loop.
The problem with shared clock is that I need to sample the AI and AO at different rates but using AO and AI clock separately did not seem to affect the performance.
I still want to try to use the AO start trigger (as you suggest) because I would like to delay the AI by a few ms from the AO. Is there a simple way to to that?
I suppose, switching from traditional DAQ to DAQmx requires your brain to be rewired - after playing with it for a couple of days and nights I developed a "feeling" for it. One of the differences was that, in order to use this example in the loop, one has to use 'stop task' inside and 'clear task' outside the loop.
    Thanks again!

  • Grey Screen problem when using latest JREs

We use a Java based viewer supplied by a 3rd party.
Since the Direct3D Pipeline implementation into JRE 1.6 versions we have been experiencing issues with the Applet window appearing grey.
Adding the parameter -Dsun.java2d.d3d=false to the JRE resolves the issue, but we have numerous customers using this viewer & to have to add this parameter for all is painstaking.
I am wondering if there is anything else that can be done.
I also have the same issue on my computer.
It has a ATI Radeon HD 2400 Pro Graphics Card installed with the latest drivers available.
I have included the debug log for your information.
