Grey screen lockup after re-install.

I've got an Aluminum PowerBook G4 that just had a hard drive failure. I've purchased a new Samsung drive and installed it with no problems. Next, I booted from my OS X 10.3 install disks and partitioned the drive. The install went smooth with no errors of any kind. After the reboot at the end of the install I get to the gray apple screen and the wheel spins for about 20 seconds and then locks up completely. I then ran disk utility to verify the disk and permissions with no errors to be corrected. I've also cleared the PRAM a few times with no success. Anybody out there got any suggestions?

Hello Again pegasusroscoe!
As you previously had Jaguar 10.2.x installed, was this an Upgrade installation to Panther 10.3.x?
To install, did you use a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs?
The discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on them.
If you did not use those type of discs, that may explain why the install was unsuccessful.
Additional info in these links.

, Hello and thanks for posting on the HP support forums.  First thing you may want to try is the Windows Update Troubleshooter. If that fails then what you will want to try is rolling back the operating system to the previous operating system until drivers are released for Windows 10 on the HP support site for your system. Thanks again for the post and have a great day.

  • 2010 MacBook wont boot past grey screen, even after a new hard drive and install CD.

Hey guys, I received a 2010 Macbook last year as a gift (no warranty). It worked fine untill a few days ago. It wouldn't boot past the grey apple logo. I took it in to an Apple store and they said it was a bad HDD. Since I didn't have much stored on it, and I have everything backed up to my desktop, I got a new, larger capacity HDD and replaced it with no issues. I started the Macbook with the OSX Leopard install CD, but it didn't identify the HDD, and now it won't boot past the grey screen.
Any ideas? Is it the motherboard?
    Thanks a lot!

Leopard is done for, call Apple via phone and order the 10.6.3 white retail disks and use those.

  • Repeatedly getting stuck on spinning wheel and grey screen, even after multiple re-installs of the OS

Ok, so running Lion on a MacBook, (2010 i think) and the OS got corrupted(stuck on spinning wheel and grey screen on boot)
Tried to repair the disk via disk utility using an install CD, no go, couldn't repair, so, did a clean install.
New install went fine, computer worked for about 3 days and then stuck on the spinning wheel again.
suspecting physical damage to the harddrive, I installed the OS to an external, and booted from there. Worked for a couple days and then stuck on the spinning wheel.
I have repeated the process 5 times now, each time it works for a little and then craps out again.
    What's going on?
as a note, when I say it gets stuck on the spinning wheel, I have left it for 12 hours trying to boot to no avail.

The Apple Hardware Test doesn't always detect all errors.
Next time you get the gray screen/spinning wheel, try booting into the Safe Mode to see if it will boot.
Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • New hard drive, get grey screen when trying Leopard install

We installed a new hard drive ourselves in my G4 older Mac Mini ~ 120 GB, with a video tutorial and photo guide, and this seemed to go very well ~ took less than an hour. The Ram was also upgraded to 1gb (the max available) right before the hard drive (I paid to have this done, shouldn't have, I realize now, since that is easier than a harddrive install, I think). I upgraded the hard drive because the computer seemed to be failing, very slow etc.. The shop that installed the Ram told me they thought I needed a new hard drive.
After the install seemed to go fine, I am trying to install Leopard and am having trouble.
So this is a brand new hard drive with nothing on it, no operating system. I turned on the computer and got one gray screen with something in the middle of the screen ~ a small box, can't remember.
Then I put in the Leopard disc, the fan came on and was noisy for a minute, and now it is compleltey quiet. But all I get is a new gray screen with Apple in the middle, nothing else. Any clues what to do next? I'm hoping there is nothing wrong with our hard drive installation. I'm not even sure how to get the disc out of the computer right now.
    Please help! Thanks!

Javier's problem is that the system requires a PRAM reset - otherwise systems that start in verbose mode would then subsequently revert to normal startup automatically.
Your problem may be that the new hard drive in your mini is not yet prepared correctly for the MacOS installer to recognise it.
Once you are booted to the installer disk, instead of attempting an install, open Disk Utility in the Utilities menu. If the drive doesn't show up on the left, it is not correctly installed, and you will need to open the system up again and check that it is connected correctly. If it shows up in Disk Utility, you need to partition and format it correctly. To do that, click on the drive in Disk Utility to select it, then click the Partition tab. Under 'Volume Scheme, select a single volume, then click the Options button to bring up the partitioning choices. For a G4 mini, you want to select Apple Partition Map. Click OK to confirm and it will partition the drive and should also format it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Once that is done, you should then be able to run the MacOS installer which will then recognise the drive and allow the install.
For reference, a G4 (PPC) Mac, (including the original minis) require Apple Partition Map partitioning, and Mac OS Extended (Journaled) formatting for a MacOS installer to recognise them.
Intel Macs (including later minis) require GUID partitioning and Mac OS Extended (Journaled) formatting.

  • Grey Screen Freeze after 10.6.7 update

I have 2 iMacs. My wife's is 2008 3.06 Ghz 24" model with Snow Leopard. Just updated to 10.6.7, and on re-boot we entered perpetual grey screen freeze ups. Followed guidance from support article - specifically to remove peripherals (attached were 2 USB devices - HP inkjet printer and WD 500G portable HD used as Time Machine. Also connected to LAN via RJ-45) After re-boot I changed network to airport to access LAN. When I re-inserted ethernet jack the grey screen immediately came up. Tried various combinations and ethernet connect always kills machine. Any ideas? I'm holding off on 10.6.7 update for other iMac.

Because I've had strange problems with past system update downloads, I now always get my system updates from http://support.apple.com/downloads/
I always use the Update Combo version. It installs a fresh set of all previous updates as well as the new one. This gives you a fresh beginning with system 10.6.x. Since I adopted that practice, I've had no more issues with updates.

  • Grey screen hang after 10.5.1 fixed, for now.

It looks like somehow 10.5.1 has broken the ability to boot my USB HD. Upon reboot, it would hang on the grey screen with spinner going. Verbose mode shows a bunch of reports of kernel dependency conflicts and journal errors. Here are some:
kernel[0]: jnl: unknown-dev: flushing fs disk buffer returned 0x5
kernel[0]: Extension "com.apple.driver.AppleACPIPlatform" has immediate dependencies on both com.apple.kernel and com.apple.kpi components; use only one style.
So, just for kicks, I removed the hard disk and installed it in one of my firewire 800 cases. Plug in, power on, booted right up no problem. Also no more kernel or journal errors either.
I tried restarting about 10 times in a row and it's working fine and is not spitting out the previous errors any more.
    Hopefully this will stay working.

I have duplicated this issue. I was running 10.5 on a 500GB USB drive. I upgraded to 10.5.1 with no abnormal errors. On restart I get a grey screen with Apple and a spin underneath. No further boot. Let it go over night. I watched the verbose startup and it hangs just as mentioned above.
When I boot from my internal drive the USB drive mounts and is intact. I have run Disk Utility repairs and no problems have been found. I will try DiskWarrior also.
Unfortunately the drive is SATA and my firewire case is ATA/IDE. So I cannot test the drive as above. I will look into getting a FW case and post those results when I get them.
Any ideas as to a resolution would be appreciated.
    Rick

  • Black Screen Problem after/durning installing MSI Driver CD (ATI 4780 1 GB)

    Hi,
I've recently purchased a your (MSI) Radeon 4870 1GB video card from Newegg. And I've installed it and I have the latest drivers (from windows) for it. But ever time I try and install the MSI CD on my computer the screen goes black (could possibly freeze but I don't know cause the screen is black) when installing it or upon the restart my computer. Do you have a solution for this problem? I've tried pretty much everything I can think of so far. I have SP2 Vista, I've tried to install it with and without anti-virus on also. I know this is the problem because when I go into safe mode and uninstall it my computer works fine again. I also built this computer a couple of weeks ago too FYI. On another note when the MSI CD is not installed the graphic are spectacular and very game that I've tried works at full setting.

Well if its working very well for you, then don't install from the CD.

  • Grey screen normal after update??

I just downloaded the 10.7.2 update, as it was restarting the grey screen remains. It's been there for over 2 hours, not booting up.  Is this normal? How long should I expect the grey screen to remain? Thanks for your help. I'm new to Macs....

No, it's not normal. Force a reboot by holding down the power button until the screen goes dark, then pressing it again briefly. If you still can't boot within a few minutes, try a safe boot (shift key.) If that doesn't work either, boot from your recovery partition (command-R) and either restore from your last Time Machine backup or reinstall Lion. I'm assuming you do have backups of some kind. If not, you may be in big trouble.

  • Grey screen appers on xcode install

I already had xcode on my Mac Book Pro. While i try to open the xcode it asked me to install the update before opening the xcode when i cancel the xcode closes. The next time it installed the update. When i ran my piece of code and executed the project in xcode the machine stuck. After restart i got an apple logo and then a gray screen. Not sure why this happens on Mavricks earlier with Mountain Lion the xcode ran fine.
Also not sure if this is the problem due to installing the package in xcode.
    Please suggest.

    (1) You cannot run the installer program while booted into your primary partition; you must boot into the DVD. Restart the computer while holding down the C key until the DVD boots.
This isn't true. The retail Snow Leopard DVD is designed to start the install procedure while started up normally. When you do this, after performing some checks on the target partition it writes some pre-install files to it before restarting automatically from the DVD. This speeds up the install procedure.
    (2) You cannot install Snow Leopard on this computer from a DVD that came with another computer; you must use, as it were, a free-standing commercial Snow Leopard installer DVD.
The exception is, as Xian Rinpoche correctly surmised, a Mac model released after the currently available retail Snow Leopard DVD became available. The newest Macs require a later version of the OS than what is included on the retail DVD, which is why it won't work with the new i5 & i7 models. (See Don't install a version of Mac OS X earlier than that which came with your Mac for more about this.)
As a general rule, use either the installer that came with the Mac on its grey system discs or a retail disc released after that Mac model was released. You can also refer to this handy chart of the OS version that ships with each Mac model.

  • Blue screen only after leopard install. HELP!!!!

Here is what I did. I installed Leopard on my MacBook Pro and it booted perfectly. I did the upgrade option so I wouldn't lose my editing and graphics software. I decided to upgrade my Dual 867 MDD, which has a Sonnettech 1.67 processor for mirrored drive door macs. This is where the **** has come in. For the first attempt, I installed the upgrade on the system drive with was only an 80gig drive with 14 gigs left. After I came back in from letting the install go overnight, my computer monitor only showed a blue screen and the mouse arrow. i can move the mouse arrow around which is a good sign. I got frustrated and then took out the 80 gig system drive and replaced it with a carbon copy backup drive of 10.4.11. This replacement drive is a 120gig 7200 rpm PATA drive. I then installed Leopard on that drive, got the success checkmark at the end and rebooted. Again, the blue screen came back with a functional arrow. My only guess is that the low end ATI card (the original that came with the Dual 867's) is somehow flipped or reversed, preventing me from accessing the dock and system functions. I don't know of a keystroke that will flip them. Why would the mouse be functional and nothing else? The card has a HDMI port, albeit one of the older ones that is rounded and not square. At this point, I"m stuck on blue screen with roving mouse.I also could not get the install CD to eject, even when holding the eject key during the restart. I finally got it out. After a third reboot, I got the dreaded error message of death stating to restart. Any suggestions?

where can i get migration assistant? will carbon copy not do? my situation is worse now. i don't know why i forgot to go with archive and install and chose upgrade. life is **** for my g4 now. the new situation is that if i choose archive and install or the clean install option, there is an error message at the end saying the install failed and that there is an error with the disc. I have also seen an error message saying the install failed due to not finding the oxford dictionary something. on top of that, i can't reboot into OS9 because leopord alters or deletes an important extension that the sonnettech processor needs. they sent me the new file and once i overcome these failed install issues i can add that new file. oh well. wonder how vista installs are going?

  • Screen Problems after Leopard install.

When I first installed Leopard, I got a black screen full scrolling white text after only 10min of use.
I did a clean install and that problem is gone, but I'm still getting very odd screen problems. The Apple logo and translucent part of the menu bar go away at times and it freezes some times too.
I was wondering if any other iMac G4 users have had these problems... ???

I believe the default settings for labels and text in Finder windows, if that's what you mean, is 12 point. You you can change font size through View Options. Text sizes for menus, etc. is fixed; I don't know what the size is specifically. For Firefox, text size for web pages is specified by the web site generally, but you can change the size Firefox will default to in the Firefox Content preferences.
I hope I've answered the question you were asking. Regards.

  • Imac Grey screen require erase and install

I have erased and rinstalled about 6 times now.  Works fine then eventually falls apart (freezes, safarie quits, then dies) and will not start as ball spinning with grey bar filling then shutdown wh about 1/3 through.  Apple store did 2 of the reinstalls and sold me a back up disk.  This is great as now I can rease and reinstall weekly without much loss.  Also replaced hard drive under apple recall.  But now same problems.  Cannot repair disk as it goes so far and tells me to erase and reinstall.  Not sure but getting close to tossing the machine.  Already spent $600 on repairs with no progress.  Apple store said har drive was fine and we were installing bad software, but we dot havemuch more the basics plus MS office
Anyone else out there have this issue

That ***** you can Easley buy a new hd for about 60$ 1tb for the iMac on eBay or any tech site and replace it.   I don't think apple will do it again u can always try again

  • Grey screen only after start up tone

Have a 2008 Mac Pro, when I start it up, I get the start up tone, then it just goes to a gray screen.  A few times yesterday, the Apple logo would show up with the spinning wheel...even once got the "No Entry" sign.  Is this a power supply issue or a drive issue or something else?  Is there any way to get the info of the drives?

The chime is generated in software after millions of instructions have been executed. It indicates that if an appropriate Boot device can be found, booting is likely.
The gray screen can only occur after the software initializes the display.
The Gray Apple is loaded off a Boot device -- it is not present in the ROM code available at Startup.
In summary, you have progressed far beyond fundamental problems like power supplies. This article address the "No entry" sign:
Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup

  • Imac startup issues- green vertical lines changing to grey screen

Help!  I think my 27" i7 iMac just died!
Yesterday morning, I had a kernal panic while using Safari.  Restarted, ran disk utility twice.  A bunch of "library shoyuld be r- instead of -rw" type errors that could not be repaired were found both times.
After second round of computer restart/disk utility, the computer started displaying green lines running vertically down the grey screen.
After around a minute and a half, the screen became grey only, no green lines- no apple logo.
I attempted to restart holding down the shift key, I saw the startup/repair process "kick in" (the horizontal repair bar running across the bottom of the screen).
Once that was finished, I got about a minute and a half worth of "spinning cursor" and then a pretty blue-lined screen (of death)
(NOTE--bright white lights are flash from camera- not on screen)
I cannot access anything now.  I know that I am running whatever the current version of OS 10.8X is now.
I am stuck- anybody got any ideas?

Look on the bottom of the stand, Apple used to print them there I don't know if they still do or not. Also if you have the original box it's printed on that too.
In addition if you click about this Mac and click the version of OS X installed a couple of times the serial number will appear. In addition you can run System Information and get the serial number there too.
Finally it's not going to do much good to call Apple, you need to take the machine in for repair at your local Apple Store or AASP. I suspect your graphics card has failed.
