Grey Screen Ruins My Day

I've been scanning other posts and nothing seems to be quite like the issue I am having.
I use a macbook pro with snow leopard. I bought it in August 2009.
The sequense leading up to the problem: yesterday I used my Sims 3 disk for the first time in months. I had forgotten how SLOW it makes my laptop, but I enjoyed some gaming before Saving and Closing.
I did not remove the disk before closing my laptop. I did not turn off my laptop (as the battery was fully charged)
This morning, I opened my laptop and things worked fine. No "disk noises". Laptop wasn't warm. It took the normal amount of time to wake up. I went online to a few sites. I was in the middle of watching a video on youtube when it froze. I figured it was the internet connection so I turned off my Airport and turned it back on (my usual fix for wonky internet). No luck. When Safari was active I got the spinning rainbow ball. I tried to force quit Safari. No luck. So I held down the power button until the computer forced a shutdown. I walked away and waited a few mintues.
I pushed the power button . . . it did not Chime, but it did buzz and hum as normal. But the grey screen is as far as it gets. I have tried the off & on process about 6 times now, and it's the same thing each time. Short pushes, long pushes. Same thing. HELP HELP HELP!
Notes--I do not hear the disk spinning. I have tried holding down the eject button. I have tried holding down the power button while clicking the trackpad. I have tried pressing Option to see if anything shows up. I did back up my harddrive with in the past 6 months. I did remove a lot of photos and videos after the transferm so I know my HD is not full. (I am a photographer/videographer and I work with a LOT of media)
I have banged my head on the screen---scratch that last one. Anyway nothing is working.
(not sure about the OS X because my COMPUTER WON'T TURN ON)

For a moment I saw the Start Up Apple and the circling white wheel of Boot Up. (Screen remained grey) But then, before I could even get excited the Apple turned into a circle with a bar through it. (not sure what that's called)
But it stopped loading and froze. That was the only result I got--and I can't get my computer to do it again.
Does anyone else have a suggestion??

  • Why have all of my camera roll images suddenly turned to a blank grey screen that says jpg in the middle?

all of my photos in my camera roll suddenly turned to blank grey screens the other day and they all say jpg in the middle of them, i did nothing for this to happen so can't understand why it has. I literally went on my camera roll and they all started changing as i scrolled up. Can anybody tell me why it has done this and what i can do to get all of my pictures back?
    thankyou.

    Here's what I'd try (starting at 1 and if it doesn't work, then 2);
    1. Try opening the images (try taking a picture and see if that opens also)
    2. Try plugging it into computer, check if you can view the photos on that
    3. Check when the last backup was made (hopefully it was recent) and restore from that
    4. Try an alternative itunes manager like copytrans and see can you get access to the images with that

  • Hi, After I try to load either an existing or new project in Adobe Premier Elements 9 I just get a blank grey screen with none of the timeline, etc. boxes on view. This has suddenly happened, one day OK next not! At the top of the screen I get the normal

Hi, After I try to load either an existing or new project in Adobe Premier Elements 9 I just get a blank grey screen with none of the timeline, etc. boxes on view. This has suddenly happened, one day OK next not! At the top of the screen I get the normal Pre icon, File, Edit, Clip, etc.
I am planning on purchasing Premier Elements 13, would it be better if I bought a new program rather than download an upgrade, just in case the upgrade doesn't load properly due to the error with my existing program?
If I the deleted Premier Elements 9 on my PC would I lose all my existing videos that were produced using Premier Elements 9 or would they be saved so that they can still be worked on in Premier Elements 13?
Does Premier Elements 13 work with Windows 7?
    Thanks
    Terry

Premiere Elements 13 absolutely works with Windows 7!
In fact, I'd highly recommend you download the free trial and give it a test run.
Meantime, go to Windows Update and make sure you have all of the latest Windows updates, including those that don't install automatically. Then go to the nVidia or ATI site and ensure you have the latest driver for your graphics card, and go to Apple.com and ensure you have the latest version of Quicktime, per the program's requirements.

  • What now? Hard drive replaced 10 days ago but now iMac won't go beyond the grey screen.

Hard drive replaced after inability to get beyond grey, sometimes blue, screen. It's been working fine for the past ten days but now it's stuck at the grey screen. After 3 or 4 minutes, it'll restart itself and the whole cycle begins again. Did a Hardware Test from the disc. First time it appeared to have passed but again not getting beyond the grey screen, did another. This time it froze half way through. Any suggestions? This is an iMac 24", 2009 with large architectural programs installed (Vectorworks).

Not sure what to suggest at this point.  I don't think a smc and pram reset will do anything useful for this case but you could give it a try as a desperation move.
If the machine could stay up long enough I would try to make a backup.  If not, at least try to copy off that Vectorworks stuff on to a drive.  Maybe it will stay up long enough to get just that.
By the way, if you had the AHT boot disk you should also have the installer disk.  If you boot from it you could try to run Disk Utility from there to try to repair the boot drive. just in case it's only a problem of a corrupt disk.

  • Not my day. Deleted "wheel" user. Can't reboot. Grey screen. Only an iPad to help solve.

IT is not my day. Just fixed a problem with my desktop(thank you Linc Davis!) and noticed a user I didn't recognize: "Wheel." I deleted it from permissions and things froze up on my computer. I restarted and got a grey screen.
I'Ve already checked this solution: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4011246?start=0&tstart=0
but I don't think I can use BatChmod from the grey screen and I haven't set up a root password. I am stuck. Help! I've certainly learned my lesson to not fiddle with the HD!

That was foolish, however if everything goes fine it won't delete your files, but if not they're most likely to be gone.

  • Grey screen on 2 computers on same day

This is strange. Earlier today i tried to log out of my Powerbook and nothing happened, just a blue screen so i turned it off holding power button. Then tried to turn it on and nothing, it wont load past the grey screen. So i erased and installed everything, ok, it now loads up.
Now i restart my brand new imac alu and it wont boot up! all i get is a grey screen with the apple symbol and spinning thing. What is going on? Same thing on 2 different computers on the same day.
please help as my back up was on my imac. thanks

i can access the imac from the powerbook via firewire with no problem and have copied everything off but still no luck getting the imac to boot up. I have reset the pram, and when i try to repair permissions using disk utility off the dvd i get:
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit.
also when booting in safe mode i get the error message
mdnsresponder not found or something similar, it goes through trying to load up mdnsresponder over and over again...
    thanks for any help

  • Retina MBP, grey screen of death (GSOD) 3 times in first 4 days. Hardware issue?

I just picked up a Retina MBP 4 days ago. So far I've mostly just done light web browsing on it (using Google Chrome Canary), maybe ten hours of total usage. It's died to the Grey Screen Of Death (GSOD) three times so far. Is this likely a physical hardware issue, or are there some software kinks they are working out? Should I try to return it within 14 days, or take my chances getting it fixed if it turns out to be a hardware issue?
This is my first mac (previously all thinkpads), and I have to admit that if a windows laptop BSODed on me three times it would be in the return mail, and I wouldn't even bother to re-order. This is because I have enough experience with windows to know that three BSODs doing nearly nothing is absolutly a hardware problem. What's it like on the Apple side of the fence? Is this probably a hardware issue, or possibly poor quality control on drivers?

Digging in a little deeper, I found the location of the kernel panic logs, and all three of them look like they are the same Intel HD4000 driver bug ticked by Google Chrome which is talked about here.. Perhaps it's not bad hardware after all.

  • Help !!! freeze and stuck on grey screen, difficult to reboot, here is my EtreCheck report

Help !!! I experienced more and more issues since I upgraded to mavericks and i brought my MBP 15" (from 2011, out of warranty) to the Apple genius bar a couple of days after my computer started to freeze and crash on a grey screen with less and less possibility to reboot it (tried all advices i could find on the forums to reboot in other ways, etc. ). The overnight tests at Apple gave nothing, they just decided to reinitiate the software and concluded that the problem was solved.
But the problem happened again: when i reloaded my backup from Time Machine, i could run the whole process till the end then when I was asked to restart, I couldn’t open the finder, my screen was stuck on a light grey.
I could reboot it (always in maintaining the off button to stop the machine or in using the single mode) but it’s non stable, after too many manipulations, the screen freezes or divides in 2 parts with lines, etc. And I have to try again different ways to reboot…
I took a new appointment to the Apple Genius bar, but in the mean time, I tried to repair the authorizations, and I have to say that the list is really long, even if I did the operation more 3 times…
I think there is a software conflict somewhere and find the possibility to check the system with EtreCheck (thanks! I will also bring this paper to the Genius bar technician).
Please, would there be someone who could read this information and gives me some advices and opinion on what could be problematic, what to do etc.
In end, what is very weird to me:
I could read on this forum that “startup items” are no more necessary since OS 10.4. I tried to delete the ones that appear here in library/startupitems, and found another one which is not mentioned in this EtreCheck list : startouc
Also when I tried to delete those items, it was refused by the finder with the message saying that this items are in use…
Another point: I uninstalled the application Chiavetta Internet 42 a week ago when I started to have the problems. I was in Italy and this is a usb key with pin for internet. At the moment thought about a possible conflict with the key and deleted every item concerning this installation. This is because I don’t understand that it appears now in the “User login Items”.
Thank you so much in advance

  • Grey Screen with Flashing Folder with Question Mark

    Hi,
I need some help with an issue I'm having on my Mid-2012 Macbook Pro (13"; OSX 10.9.2; 8GB RAM).  I've had issues with this Macbook for the past year.  I've worked with Apple Support and had it into the Mac Store prior to the warranty expiring (Dec 2013).  I have the exact same model with all of the same specs that my employer purchased at the same time for work as my work computer, and I haven't had any issues with that one.
Previously, the system would slow down excessively and eventually start hanging. Occasionally the screen would start flashing.  Apple phone support had me wipe the hard drive and re-install the OS and all of my file, apps, and setting from my Time Machine backup.  That worked for about four months, and then it started again. Since it was getting close to the warranty expiration, I took it to an Apple Store. They ran a bunch of diagnostics, said the hardware was all fine but the OS needed to be re-installed.  They did that in early Dec, and everything was cool again until about three days ago.  Three days ago, it started slowing down and freezing again (even when doing non-memory intensive tasks such as broswing the web with only a couple of tabs open and no other applications open).  Last night, it froze hard and wouldn't shut down, so I had to cold boot it.  When I tried to power it back on, it came to the grey screen with the flashing folder with the question mark (which I know means it can't find the boot sector).  I waited until this morning, and it stil wouldn't boot. I then rebooted into Startup Manager, and the HDD was there. I selected the HDD, and it booted fine and ran fine for a couple of hours (I was able to do a Time Machine backup).  Then it froze up solid again. I waited for an hour or so before cold booting (don't like doing that), and when I tried rebooting, I got the flashing folder with the question mark. I tried booting into the Startup Manager again, but this time, my HDD wasn't listed. I then booted into the OSX Recovery utility (CMD R on boot), went into the Disk Utility hoping to do a disk repair, but my HDD wasn't listed. I have an external SATA to USB adapter, so I pulled the HDD, hooked it to a USB port on my other (identical except it doesn't have problems) Macbook Pro.  Once my other Macbook booted, the HDD from the bad Macbook Pro showed up fine.  I ran a verify and repair disk on the HDD from the bad Macbook, and it didn't show any issues.
So I figured I'd be really brave. I took the HDD from the bad Macbook Pro and put it in my work (good) Macbook Pro (I took the HDD out of my working work Macbook Pro).  It booted fine.  I then did the verify and repair disk (again no errors) and verify and repair permissions (it found a few, but no more than it has in the past). I ran it that way for about an hour with no issues. That led me to believe that the HDD for my personal Macbook was fine, and it must be an issue with the SATA cable or the mainboard.
Here's where it gets odd.  I put the HDD from my work Macbook Pro into the bad Macbook Pro thinking it wouldn't even recognize it.  It did recognize it, and it booted fine.  I ran it like that for about 30 minutes.  It did have a couple of short freeze ups, but it didn't lock up solid. I didn't want to push my luck and possibly damage the HDD for my work Macbook, so I shut down the bad Macbook Pro ended the experiment at that point.
I put the original HDD back in the Macbooks where they originally came from. I then ran the Apple Hardware Test (press and hold D on startup) on the bad Macbook Pro; I did the extended testing option. It ran for about an hour, but it didn't find any issues with the bad Macbook Pro.
I put the HDD from the bad Macbook back in my working Macbook and wiped the disk and reinstalled OSX from a Time Machine Backup from last week (before the problems occured).  Put it back in the bad Macbook and still no luck. Finally I tried resetting the PRAM because I saw that as one of the options on this discussion board.
I've searched and read everything I can find related to this, but I can't find anything that works, and I'm at my wits end.  Can anyone point me in a direction of what might be wrong and what else to try?
    Thanks!
    Mike

You performed thorough and methodical troubleshooting, and this appears to be the most important result:
I put the HDD from my work Macbook Pro into the bad Macbook Pro thinking it wouldn't even recognize it.  It did recognize it, and it booted fine.  I ran it like that for about 30 minutes.  It did have a couple of short freeze ups, but it didn't lock up solid.
Given compatible hardware, you ought to be able to swap hard disk drives in exactly that manner, so it shouldn't surprise you that it worked. However, installing the "known good" HDD in the problem machine should not have resulted in any freeze-ups at all.
You can conclude the hard disks (both of them) are serviceable and whatever fault exists probably lies elsewhere. Often the SATA cable is damaged or not seated properly, and is likely to fail more than anything on the logic board. Inspect the logic board's SATA connections and make sure there are no contaminants or damage. The two drives and two logic boards are going to have slightly different component tolerances, so perhaps the defective one is simply exceeding some limit.
Apple Hardware Test is very cursory and essentially tests for the presence of operable hardware. It is far from an exhaustive test, and only a report of a failure can be relied upon for accuracy. For a more thorough test you would need to have Apple evaluate it using the time-consuming Apple Service Diagnostics. Even then, they may come up without a clue, and eventually someone will suggest a logic board replacement which can be expensive.
It is an unusual problem, and I don't know how much time Apple would invest in diagnosing it before they conclude you really ought to buy a new Mac instead. They might surprise you though in that a "depot repair", if yours is eligible, is a very cost effective option so consider it.
Given your ability you might also consider purchasing a replacement logic board from PowerbookMedic, or even sending it to them for a flat rate repair.

  • Mid 2011 mbp i7 with a SSD has problems, including grey screen/blue screen/beeping/freezing when I stream live video (i.e. watch espn or time warner cable) Help? Ideas?

Recently my Macbook Pro (June 2011, i7, 8gb RAM, 512gb SSD, AMD Radeon 6750, Mountain Lion - since July - currently 10.8.2) has been presenting me with an array of problems, usually initiated when I am streaming live video. I was streaming Time Warner Cable on 12/9 and it gave me what looked like the blue screen of death.  It started up after about five attempts that time. The other day, after about a week of not using the computer, it wouldn't boot past the grey screen. I (option) started it and it gave me two boot choices, the regular HD and a "10.8 restore" option.  The HD gave me the grey screen and the restore option gave me the dark blue screen. I reset PRAM and that didn't work.  After a force (x) start it worked.  Today, I was using "Watch ESPN" and the screen froze and the computer did some kind of repeating RAM beep or something.  I rebooted and it started up fine.  I'm not watching any videos anymore, but this is a problem since the primary purpose for my mbp is video editing. I'm still under AppleCare but I find more solid answers in the forums or at least better questions for the AppleCare people.
Anybody have similar experiences, or a solid idea of what the heck has happened to my machine?

I'm not really sure what method that person was talking about. I just read he had a successful install so I posted it.
    But I'll hazard a guess
    1. copy your entire drive to a backup drive
    2. boot into that drive and test it out - make sure its a flawless backup, it works, and the hard drive has no problems
    3. eject that drive, disconnect it and reboot into the leopard install dvd
    4. erase your main hard drive using disc utilities on the leopard install dvd -- you've made a backup, made sure that backup was good, and disconnected it so it's currently safely disconnected from the leopard install you're about to do. Also, on the hard drive you're erasing and installing leopard on to, many people recommend "Zeroing" it as well as erasing it. That option is part of the erase function in disc utilities on the leopard install disc.
    5. do a clean install of leopard
    6. follow step 4 from that original post exactly as that person described to do.
    7. read the rest of what they said
That's pretty much it. With the backup/erase/clean install/import/ you pretty much get everything you need exactly the way you want it with very few things missing -- and you've done this over a clean install. Plus that poster did mention that you can select what you want to import from your backup hard drive.
It sounds like its a "clean install" method that gives you control via "import from machine" option in the installer. Control over what parts of your "old mac" you want to import into your "new leopard mac".
Hopefully that helps. It sounds more involved, but its actually pretty quick and provides you with a perfectly save backup in case anything goes wrong with the leopard install.

  • Trying to install snow leopard on my Macbook Pro.  After already having problems with Grey screen, blinking file with a question mark, etc.  Computer now says that one of the hard drives is failing. The "hitachi" drive says it's failing in disc utility.

o.k.  So, I've been tinkering with several "self help" fixes for several days now with no positive results.  I'll explain my initial problems and then end with my most current situation.  In hopes that someone out there will have a good suggestion or possibly remedy for the issues i'm facing
First, my problem started after my wife played a game on my macbook pro and the computer froze.  She went into a panic and decided to shut down via power button.  When computer restarted she got the blinking file/grey screen and that problem continued for a couple of days before I began using steps from various support topics from apple concerning the grey screen/blinking file folder.
Ultimately, yesterday I decided to erase my Macintosh HD file as one tip suggested.  Following the brief online and on screen (via the process) tips that were there.  Once that was completed I attempted to reinstall snow leopard (my most current version on hand) into the pc.
At first, I thought this would work.  It looked promising.  But, after several hours the installation screen returned with failure.  I attempted to repeat.  And, even repair drives during this try and re-try process.
Now, today, one of the drives..  "hitachi..." states that it's failing and is in red letters with no ability to repair via the disc utility screen.  The Macintosh HD drive shows that it's o.k. But, this drive is listed under the HItachi drive so I think that's where a problem might lay.
So, I guess my question really revolves around.. What if anything can I do to get the hitachi drive back up?  (short of taking it to a repair facility and replacing.)
And, how on earth can i get my OSX back up to I have a laptop again.
Operating on a macbook pro here.  It's my lifeline.  Otherwise, I am using a Windows desktop that i'm not that fond of.  lol
I'm trying to bring this 2006 laptop back to life.  Trying to avoid a rather expensive repair or the purchase of a new laptop.  Also expensive...
    Any help would be appreciated.

Well, running on a 2006 model.  I did not have a startup disc.  Initially, it booted up on original software in 2006.  Since then, I've upgraded to 10.6 via a box set.  And, since then I think I popped it up to lion.
All I have on a disc is snow leopard.  And, I can't get farther than the setup screen due to hard drive.  I'm taking to a apple authorized repair store right now.  We'll see what they tell me .  I'm just going to weigh the cost of repair vs. buying new.
Another bad, stupid thing is I had no means of backing up my stuff.  So, I might have lost things like music, vids, etc.  we'll see if they can recover.  If the cost is too much for repair I might just forget it and start over with a new system.  Just not sure at this point.

  • Grey Screen at start-up - Troubleshoot harddrive and/or logic board?

Hi everyone. Sorry for the lengthy post, but hopefully you can help me - I've spent a lot of time on the boards already, but hoped you could clarify some things.
The problem is my Powerbook will not get past the grey screen at start-up. It will not boot off the 10.5 install disk and I can't eject the install disk to run the hardware test disk. Removing 3rd party ram, resetting PRAM, NVRAM, attempting to boot in 'safe' mode haven't helped. The harddrive is softly clicking/searching.
    So some questions:
    1) Is it possible that an interrupted time machine backup will bork the drive to the point where it wont boot? (See back-story below). I wouldn't have thought so, but prove me wrong.
    2) Should I be able to boot from the install disk if the harddrive is stuffed?
    3) If it is hardware, it's either the logic board or the drive. Is there any way to determine what it is (eg: is it possible to do a remote hardware test?)
Edit: Just tried mounting the drive in target disk mode using an iBook, but it wouldn't mount. Powerbook displays a black screen.
Oh, and I should point out that this is well out of warranty and any fixes would have to be cheap : ). Basically I need to determine if it's the drive or the logic board, preferably without having to buy and install a new drive when it may not be the problem.
Any help or advice would be appreciated.
    Cheers
    - Ben
Here's the back story if it's any help; recently upgraded to 10.5, created a base install disk image of all installed and registered apps (in the event that my drive failed). Copied data etc from the previous system over. It ran fine for a few days. This morning I ran time machine for the first time, left the computer for a while, came back and the screen was black (as if it was just displaying black, as opposed to off). Thinking it was just a display issue (which I've seen before), I put the system to sleep (power button, then 's'), woke it up again; still black. So I forced a shut down (wouldn't allow me to do a normal shut down, because dialogue boxes must have been preventing it) and on boot I got the grey screen.

Hi Ben W. I don't have a good answer for you, but based on your information and what you've done, I think I would try starting the machine after disconnecting the harddrive. That requires taking the top off first, for which instructions are on ifixit.com.
I can conjecture that a blown HD is preventing normal operation, perhaps sucking the power down, disrupting the optical drive, etc. This is purely conjecture, but costs you nothing but your time. If this turns out to be the case, I figure the optical drive should start responding again (hold C key during reboot, etc).

  • I am having problems rebooting my mid 2009 macbook pro (grey screen other issues), need help!

I am having problems rebooting, I have experienced the same problem as others with the grey screen but my case is a little different, It started with my mid 2009 macbook pro acting a little slower than normal, the screen would freeze, mouse wouldnt move and i'd be forced to "force reboot" this went on for a couple of days until i was tinkering with the wifi connection and it froze again. I had to reboot and this time i noticed that it took a long time to get to the login screen. i put in my password and it went into infinite load (i also tried the guest account and other accounts with same result). i tried rebooting again and the same thing would happen. after several reboots, the screen just stayed grey, sometimes with the apple logo and gear sometimes without it. Since its a 2009, (and for the most part, still works like a champ) i decided test the ram, i took one stick of ram out at a time to see if i could notice anything wrong with them. when i stuck just one in, the mac was still having the same problem rebooting. i pulled that ram and and stuck in the other and i noticed that this time the apple logo never appeard and a big crossed out circle appeared. figuring that the ram must be the problem, i ordered new ram and installed it. i noticed that when i rebooted for the first time with the new ram it was rather quick and took me straight to the login screen and i was able to log in with no problem. at this point i thought the problem was solved, but i noticed the macbook still acting funny. at first, none of my files appeared on my desktop or in the finder window. after about 20 minutes, everything magically popped up. i also noticed long pauses/freezes with the colored pin wheel spinnig. i closed the laptop and opened it again and the screen just stayed black. i tried rebooting again, and again i got the grey screen with no signs of being able to log in... i waited about 20 minutes and tried to reboot again and again i was able to log in, however the macbook is still acting slow and will freeze with no signs of unfreezing without a reboot.
my macbook is 5 years old and has plenty of miles on it, so i understand if the thing needs to be replaced alltogether but does anyone know what could be the issue? could the bad ram have corrupted the hard drive in anyway? would re-installing the OS fix it?? and if so, how would i do that if i downloaded mavericks from the app store? are there any other solutions to this problem?
all my files and what not are backed up on an external HD so theres nothing on it that i'd miss desperately if i had to whipe the hard drive but id really like to get her working again without any whiping of the HD. if anyone can help me out, it'd be greatly appreciated

It is very difficult to offer troubleshooting suggestions when the "os version" you are using is unknown as each os has their own troubleshooting solutions.
How large is your hard drive and how much hard drive space do you have left?

  • Please help, I cannot start-up my PowerBook G4 (grey screen, no options)

    Sir/Madam,
My PowerBook (PB) started misbehaving two weeks ago. It seemed difficult for i to access its drive (repetitive whirring sounds). I made a clone while I could and tried to fix any problems using Disk Utility.
At first, minor problems were detected so I booted using the clone (on firewire) and tried to repair. Disk Utility reported the drive was fine. I tried Drive Genius, Disk Warrior and Techtool. I rebuilt the directories, and yet when using the drive, the access problems and delays continued. During this whole process, I kept finding that in System Preferences - Startup Disk list, my firewire clone was not detected. I had to boot with the OPT key pressed to use it (this was unusual).
Anyway after hours of trying to find the fault, I decided to boot from the firewire clone again and completely erase the built in PB drive. After this, I thought, I will do a clean reinstall.
When the time came to do a reinstall, I found that my PB got stuck on the grey screen. Even if I pressed OPT-C on startup (to reinstall the system from optical) nothing would happen. In fact the only thing that does anything different is when I just press OPT on startup. I then get asked my firmware password and there follows what should be a menu of startup options but is actually blank. My firewire clone is absent from the menu, as is any optical disc that I may have placed (eg Leopard installation or the original system discs that came with my PB). The screen with the curly arrow on the left and the straight arrow on the right remains while a little clock mouse pointer shows time passing. After about 45 seconds, the clock hands stop rotationg and the pointer will not longer move. This remains as long as I have waited (hours)
I am now at an impasse where I do not know what to do. I am frustrated. I cannot run any hardware tests, I cannot install any system, I cannot get my PB to see my clone and startup. I would appreciate any help.
    Thank you

Maybe this will be if interest. Hi everyone. First post...
Anyway, I was updating my 1.5 G4 Powerbook to 10.5.7 and scored the interminable grey screen. No joy from Option, C, Safe Boot, Verbose Mode etc, etc. Ran fsck in Single User Mode and got the all clear from the hard drive. So...
Off to the Genius Bar in Sydney's new Apple store. Again, all clear on the hard drive, so must be an operating system error.
Back home, transferred everything I could think of via Target Disk mode and Firewire to the other Mac and re-installed Panther - yep, it's an oldie but a goodie. Then updated. Then upgraded to Tiger. Then updated. Then tried to load Leopard again. No joy. Grey screen, blue screen, spinning beachball, and clicks and whirrs from the DVD drive.
After about a day of wracking my brains - I may be slow - I checked the About This Mac feature and it hit me. The RAM was 256MB, not the standard 512. Which is a prerequisite for Leopard. And the Diagnostics line said Memory Failure...
Then I found the faulty RAM slot thread/lawsuit/recall notices... None of which applied to my serial number.
To cut a long story shorter, either the RAM module or the slot is stuffed. I need to do a bit more diagnosis, but I can see an expensive swap to a MacBook Pro coming up...
If you're having trouble booting your G4 Powerbook, check it for memory failure. Apparently it's not uncommon. And apologies if this has all be covered before. Hope it helps.

  • Flashing grey screen and background pic when log in, can't access anything!

Please bare with me, this is a long one since I'm including every little detail in hope that it helps my desperate situation. I have been receiving "startup disk is full" messages for about a month now on the MacBook Air OS X Version 10.8.5 I bought new last summer. I am currently traveling throughout Asia with limited internet access, but am working from the road, which makes having a working computer critical. I checked online and followed all the advice I understood on how to clear up space: moved all my documents and pictures to Box/Dropbox, deleted unused applications, and emptied my general trash and iPhoto trash. This only stopped the startup disk full messages for a week before they started coming up again and again. I checked my storage and it said the "Other" was taking up most of the space. I realize that this could mean any number of things.I downloaded omnidisksweeper, but didn't want to risk deleting anything when I didn't what they were for. If I remember correctly, of the things I recognized, it said that my Mail was taking up a lot of space, but that made sense since I have 3 large accounts I work from. I deleted the couple files that were in the "recovered" file. Last week one of my email accounts kept resenting me the same 30 messages for a couple days. I couldn't figure out why. A couple days ago, I went to turn on my laptop after shutting it down the night before. I was able to log into my user, but once I logged in, my background picture and this blank, grey screen started alternately flashing. My dock on the bottom does not show up. In the top right corner it shows my Dropbox box icon (which I can click on and it says it's up to date, but nothing happens when I try to open it) but none of the rest (battery, Internet icons, etc). When I click on the apple in the leftmost corner nothing happens. In the top left corner the Finder toolbar shows up, but the drop down menus only open sometimes. When I click on anything from the drop down menus nothing happens. Sometimes a window pops up that says that "the last time you opened Finder, it unexpectedly quit while reopen ing windows. Do you want to try to reopen again?" The the meantime that grey screen is still flashing in the background. I have chosen "don't reopen" and "reopen" before, but nothing happens. I tried pressing down control, command, delete as suggested but nothing happens. I end up having to hold down the power button, and choose the shut down when the usual shut down, restart, sleep message shows up. I am able to access the Guest User account without problems and created a new User. However, the disk is, of course, still full, so I'm right back where I started, except that I'm unable to access my main user account that actually has all my stuff on it. I searched online and haven't been able to find anything similar to my situation. Please give me any suggestions you might have, I'm in Indonesia at the moment and have nowhere I can take it for help, but still need to work! I'm not very tech savvy (obviously), so please try to be specific! I've run the disk utility "Verify Disk" thing but it says everything's ok. I downloaded omnidisksweeper again onto the new user I created with the limited space I have available, but don't really understand what anything on it means! It says that most of the space is taken up as follows: 9.5GB private, 4.5 GB applications, 3.7 GB system, 3.6 GB library.
Is there anything  specific I should be looking for? Is there anything I can do to get my original user account to work?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
If you don't remember the password, you have to reset it. As you have a new MacBook, you are using OS X Mountain Lion, so follow these steps > http://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4101
