Grey screen w/whirring circle lasts 4ever when trying to boot up - help!

Hi gang,
Just as of recent, my macbook pro screen stays grey with the whirring circle for ever! Today after several minutes of staying on the grey screen, I shut it down and tried to reboot again...same thing happened but not as long and it finally booted up. Any  ideas what might be wrong? Thanks so much for any insight!

Launch the Console application by entering the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search, and select "system.log" from the file list. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the times of the log messages referring to boot times. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the time of the most recent boot when you had the problem. Look for error messages in the minutes after that time, and post them here -- the text, please, not a screenshot. Edit out excessive repeats, if any.
Also in Console, look under "System Diagnostic Reports" for crash logs, and post the most recent one, if any. Please do not post shutdownStall or hang logs -- they're very long and not helpful.

  • When I restart my iMac it is stuck in the grey screen with spinning circle

When I restart my imac (less than 1 year old) it won't start up.  I get the grey screen and spinning circle and it never moves beyond.  A few times in the past, I've tried to reset the PRAM and that has worked.  However, its not working this time.  Nothing seems to restart the computer.

    Hi,
The Recovery HD I believe is the Internet Recovery feature found in most 2010 and 2011 Macs. Another poster in this topic suggested taking a look at an Apple support article regarding this issue. A solution may be found there that may work for you. If all else fails, I'd recommend you contact AppleCare. Unless you are within 90 days of your purchase (which isn't the case for you) you'll either need to have the AppleCare Protection Plan to call AppleCare over the phone, otherwise I'd suggest taking your iMac to an Apple Retail Store. Could be inconvenient doing that, though, considering the iMac is not exactly portable. However, the Apple technician will (presumably - just guessing) do various initial hardware tests on the machine and hopefully resolve the issue for you.
By the way, the Internet Recovery feature (Recovery HD) allows you to restore Mac OS X in the event you have misplaced your installation discs, for example. The Internet Recovery feature can also be activated at boot up by pressing the Command (Cmd) key and the R key afterwards (while keeping the Cmd key pressed down).

Rebooting will not make you lose any content. Rebooting is when you hold the home button and the sleep button down at the same time until the Apple logo appears on the screen.
You can these suggestions. One might work for you.
Make sure that you do not have a stalled download in iTunes - a song or podcast .... if you have a download in there that did not finish, complete that one first. Only one thing can download at a time on the iPad so that could be what is causing the problem.
If that doesn't work - sign out of your account, restart the iPad and then sign in again.
Settings>Store>Apple ID. Tap your ID and sign out. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Go back to Settings>Store>Sign in and then try to update again. Tap one waiting icon only if necessary to start the download stream.

Im having trouble getting my macbook pro to boot up after a fail safe boot, im getting as far as the grey screen with the apple loggo. so im trying to run a disk repair but is saying the disk is locked, how do i unlock disk??

    Some clarification may help.
You say you cannot boot normally.  It shows a gray screen with the Apple logo.
Did you say it will boot successfully in Safe Mode (boot, then hold down the Shift key)?
How did you boot the machine to run Disk Utility?  (Which keyboard combinations)?

  • "500 internal server error" when trying to use F4 help in the variable sele

    Hi Experts,
I am getting "500 internal server error" when trying to use F4 help in the variable selection screen (in WAD).
    How could this be resolved?
Quick reply would be very helpfull.
    Thanks in advance !!

It seems you are using wrong client ID. Make sure your logon pad has right details. You should verify this with your basis team.
If the problem persists then try re-installing. But before you do that you can execute sapbexc.xla which is in the c:\program files\sap\bw. Type c:\ in cell c3 and click "start button". Any red flag means you have wrong version dll/ocx on your local drive, in that case you should reinstall with right patches.

  • Windows Server 2012R2 Fatal Error C0000034 when trying to boot

    Hi.
We patched our Server 2012R2 DC today to fix against CVE-2014-6324 using Windows update. After rebooting, we are now unable to boot and receive the error stated in the title when trying to boot.
Our primary DC however had no issues applying the update and rebooted perfectly fine.
I can only seem to find articles relating to Windows 7 SP1 regarding this error code. Is there a method for recovering this with Server 2012R2?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
I think we could check if other update installed correctly.
Did you try to remaing pending.xml file to check the result?

  • Trying to rebuild my iphoto library from time machine backup and it still says 0 restored with a grey screen and the circle. How can i restore my library?

I just bought a new Macbook pro and i tried to rebuild my iphoto library from a time machine backup on an external hard drive. Even after pressing command+option when starting iphoto and selecting rebuild library from automatic backup, it still doesn't work with the grey screen with the white circle and a little window that says 'rebuilding library: 0 versions restored'. I also tried to make a copy of my iphoto library but that did not work either. how can i restore my iphoto library or at least gain access to my photos?

    Your question is not clear
Rerairing or rebuilding the iPhoto library never involves using Time Machine in any way
TM is a totally seperate program and you can "restore" a file (including the iPhoto library) from the past using TM - you launch TM and go back to the time you want and select the file (or folder or package) you want and click restore - it probably is best to keep the current one until you are sure everything is good

  • Satellite A200 screen stays black when trying to boot

    Hello everyone,
My Toshiba Satellite A200 notebook is not working anymore, so everything started when I was playing a game, suddenly, the screen turned blue with some tiny text written on it. I had to hold the power button a few seconds to close it because nothing was happening on the computer. I then pressed the power button to open it. Everthing was going well, until the welcome screen. At this part, it was written "Welcome" but the Vista loading circle left of it wasn't turning.
After a few seconds, I decided to close the computer again, so I did hold the power button so the computer closed. Here is the problem : I tried to reopen it, but the screen stayed black. Nothing was happening. The power light was blue, but not any computer activity. So I let it like that a few minutes then closed it and tried again, but the same thing happened. I tried to disassemble it and noticed one of the two memory card wasn't fully in its slot. I fixed it, but it didn't fix the problem.
I also tried to plug another screen on it, but that one was also black. So I put back the screen on its computer and tried to boot my laptop and it worked. It was booting, but the first problem came back, the Welcome screen was frooze there. So yes I did close it again and then the same thing happened, the screen stayed black.
I don't think the problem is the screen because as I said sometime it goes to the welcome screen. Also I don't hear any welcome sound when the screen stays black as if the computer would simply not start up. And as I said earlier, I don't see any computer activity on the little light in front of the computer. And left of this one, I clearly see that the computer is ON because the power light is blue.
So this is my problem, next time the computer manages to start up I'll try to boot it on the SAFE MODE, but until then, I don't know what to do. Please, help me.
    Thanks in advance,
    MrRoy
    EDIT :
After letting the computer turned off for about 30 minutes, I started it, and booted in safe mode. At this step, I securely closed my comptuer with the shut down button instead on holding the power button. Then I reopened my computer, and it booted and the problem was fixed. Now my notebook is openened and working.
So if this is happening to you :
    1. Shut down you computer.
    2. Wait for about 30 minutes.
    3. Boot in safe mode
    4. Shut it down using the shut down button istead off holding the power button.
    That should work.

Finally, it doesn't work. I don't know why but my computer did start up after the 30 minutes, but now it's not working anymore. It just won't startup like I said later, with a black screen.
The computer did work for about half an hour. I mean, I managed to start it up but after executing a program, it just froze and I had to hold the power button to restart it. I did it about 3 or 4 times, then it simply did the black screen again. I think the problem is my processor, maybe it's damaged or something, could it be possible?
Because I see that the processor isn't working when I try to start it up.
So let's say it's damaged, would that be the symptoms of my computer?
And if it's the processor, the only way to fix it is to send it to a reparator or something, because I don't feel like it, I'd rather do it myself.
But right now, my computer is simply not booting, like I said in my previous post.
    Thanks in advance,
    MrRoy

  • Black screen when trying to boot into Windows 7

    Hello everyone.
Today we've encountered an issue with one of our MacBook Pros with Windows 7 installed. The computer was booted into Windows 7 (it's strictly used as a Windows machine by this particular user) and after a time of inactivity it went to sleep. It wouldn't wake up from it's sleep so we tried a hard boot. At that point we would get the grey screen, the Apple tone wouldn't sound off and it would just go to a black screen (by default we have it booting to windows). So then we reset the PRAM. Now, we get the apple tone and we can boot into the Mac side. But when we try and boot into Windows, we get a blank screen.
What's even more interesting, if I try and boot into a Windows install disk to do a boot repair, it gives me a black screen. If I even try to boot from a live Linux cd, I get a blank screen! When important thing I then noticed was that the cd spinned for a couple minutes, then stopped. So I began to wonder if it was still loading the OS like expected, but just wasn't displaying it.
So I booted into Windows, got the blank black screen. Then I went into another computer, fired up remote desktop and voila! I'm in the machine!
So the problem is this: When booting into ANYTHING other than OS X, the display turns off.
    What can we do?

    Hello there,
I have a similar problem! Windows 7 shutdown unexpectedly and since that I can not reboot in windows anymore only with safe mode where everything is a mess.
Also when it's trying to reboot in windows a blue window appears, says something about drivers  and it is counting something (79.78...till100)but  I m not able to read it cause it disappears immidiately and then black screen and then it turns to reboot in mac which works fine.
I m sorry if I confused you with my english...
    If anyone knows please help!
    Thanks

  • Grey screen of death?  Did it die?  Any suggestions?  Help I'm ready to jump!

Help me please!  I turned on my iMac tonight. At first it seemed business as usual, the screen came to life, I got the opening musical bong then the grey screen. Unfortunately, it all stopped there.  I tried turning it off and then back on only to experience the same issue.  Luckily I have almost everything backed up EXCEPT for the 8 hours of work a bride and I just did on her wedding album, she didn't have adequate Internet service.  I desperately need to find a way to get this sucker up at least long enough to save the file somewhere else.   I'm so sick with worry... Please help!

I'd start with an SMC reset. If that doesn't work post back as there are other things to try.
To give the best advice we'll need to know what version of OS X you are running - 10.5/10.6/10.7 and what iMac you have.
    SMC Reset
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer’s power cord and disconnect peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • Error icon when trying to boot up

I was working on my black macbook when suddenly everything froze up, I gave it time to load but I eventually just restarted. Since then my computer starts with a grey screen then shows a file icon with a question mark in the center, it doesn't boot up and eventually just shuts off after flashing this icon for a few minutes. What's happening and what can I do?

Then the best thing to do is call up Apple and request a box be mailed to you. They'll send the box free of charge & do any repairs that are necessary. Alternatively, you can have your installation discs sent to you from your home to do some more troubleshooting.
Unfortunately, if you send the machine in for repair, they won't save any data off the hard drive.

  • IMac restarts when trying to boot up

Since about 2 weeks ago,  my iMac has been having problems. The only problems which have occurred were during booting up. Whenever I try to boot up, there's a cycle - I press the back button, the chime plays, the grey screen, apple logo and loading wheel show up, but then the screen goes black, and it repeats. It can repeat from 2-20 times on one attempted boot up. It's extremely frustrating and wastes time, but there are no further problems. I'm on a 21.5 inch Mid 2011 iMac.
    Thanks.

    Do this:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
