Grey screen, wiped mac and still same problem

About 2 weeks ago my son accidentally pulled the power cable out of the back of the iMac. He then suffered quite a bit of freezing on several applications and even force quit was not working. He had to hold the power button in to turn off. He then had quite a bit freezing but force quit was working, albeit quite slowly. One day I could not login to my user account, my son had his open and the shared account we use for the iPad and I thought this might be causing my account to start logging in but just ending up back at the login screen. I logged out of the other two accounts and tried again and it worked. It was fine for a few hours but then I logged out and later my son tried to log in to be met with a grey screen and spinning cog. After looking on line we first tried safe boot which worked but then after restarting the same grey screen. It then seemed that we should insert the cd and try disk repair but this was greyed out so we could only verify disk and then the disc would not eject. I couldn't eject from the keyboard or from utilities but finally did it from starting up and clicking left side of mouse. After quite a few more start ups where we had grey screen followed by blue screen then nothing we then got it to start up. I quickly backed everything up using time machine and tried a repair disk again. This time it said the dusk could not be repaired so we prepared to wipe the iMac. I did this with relative ease until an error message showed the installation had failed. Back to the Internet for more help. Verbose mode threw up an error message of disk02 i/o error so we started again with doing a reinstall. It worked and seemed ok for a day or so, then freezing, spinning beach balls etc. I tried a verify permissions and about 50 needed repairing which it did. Worked fine and we started to copy our music and photos back (I don't actually know how to bring back everything but we were running out of space anyway so it seemed ok to just bring things back slowly). It seemed ok though start up was atrociously slow even with nothing on the system but it was working. Then Christmas day and my son has a new iPod which he wants to sync. It starts up fine, he syncs and then turns it off for Christmas lunch. He turns it back on and grey screen but this time nothing else, it can sit with spinning cog for over 10 mins. We've tried the power supply trick, draining the power and waiting but nothing. Is it the hard drive? And if so is it worth repairing or should we be thinking about a new iMac?

Update on my iMac, apple rang today to say they have replaced the hard drive too and let it run on and off since Saturday as the problem was intermittent and they had to make sure it did actually boot up properly. Anyway it seems the pulling of the cable from the back of the iMac caused a power surge which in turn caused problems on the hard drive, I have been saying this since day one but no one would listen! Apple are replacing the hard drive free of charge as they have caused us some inconvenience in not fixing it properly first time. That's what I call excellent customer service.
Quatchi, it sounds like there are similar issues on your hard drive to ours, apple said bad sectors and I'd guess you'll need to replace the hard drive.

I have updated my billing information and still can't update my existing apps , i ahve changed the payment card and still same problem ,what shall i do ?

It's a credit card, not a debit card ? As far as I know that message will show if you are trying to use a card that was not issued by a bank in the same country as where your iTunes account is based (and you need to be in that country). If you are sure that it is then you could try contacting iTunes Support and see if they can help : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Purchases, Billing & Redemption

You need to restore your iPad using recovery mode and the process is covered in this article.

  • RMA and still same problems! (Neo2 Plat)

I was having the system shut down over night problem where nothing woudl turn on, no fans on anything, not even the powersupply.  So I tested my Powersupply on a friends computer and it was dead and I also tried numerous power supplies on my motherboard and it was dead alos.  So I had the power supply and motherboard  RMA'd and got it put back together today and I am still having the same problems!!!!@ !
I hooked up the CPU, ram, and video cards just to see if it would start up; nope, I hear a crackling noise coming from the brand new powersupply, but the fans start spinning on the powersupply but nothing else.  What else could be wrong, could my CPU be dead???  I only hear the crackling noise when I have the 12V connector plugged into the motherboard and this is where the CPU gets power from correct?  Could I be in need of a new processor?  I tried my ram video in other systems with no issues so its seems the cpu is the only thing left......@#$%^

I had a similar issue.  Shut it down over night.  Next morning I removed the HSF to install AS5.  When I put it back together, It wouldn't boot.  The D-bracket at 4 red LED's, which means "CPU damaged or not installed properly".
So I sent my CPU to AMD for testing, and It wouldn't post for them either so they sent me a new one.  RMA'd the MB also.  Got the "new" MB/CPU back together and have had no problems since.
What does teh D-bracket hang on?

  • HT2470 Grey screen after reboot and keychain password problems..

It's hard to believe I have only had my iMac 1 week and already I have managed to lock myself out of my user account and now after following online advice to unlock the keychain within utilities, I have a grey screen and spinning pointer. I remember deleting something from the keychain but now I can't even log on?
Is there anyway I can resolve this myself ( very little technical experience) or will Apple phone support be my best option?  Any answers would be greatly appreciated.............. thanks in advance.

You paid for 90 days of phone support. Might as well use it.

  • Fresh snow leopard install and still same problem. Please help :(

    hello.
    After 10.6.3 update....
I had issues with trackpad and keyboard freezing on my early 2008 macbook pro.
I have tried to reset pram, nvram, smc, onyx maintance everything i could think of.
So i decided to wipe hard drive clean and do fresh install. Everything was working fine until i applied 10.6.3 update.
Is there any fix for this yet ?
It still doesnt work good even with fresh install of snow leopard and 10.6.3 update.
    Thank you

I've read a lot on the Internet about alien UFO crashes too, but that doesn't mean it is a good idea to take them at face value.
If something doesnt work after clean install then thats updates issue.
Not necessarily, at least if you mean the OS update itself. Do a little research. This same argument pops up after every OS update. There are no exceptions -- every one of them has been blamed for all manner of post-update problem, linked to each of several different models, & everything else you have read on the Internet about this one. Users also frequently use the "clean install" argument in support of these theories that the update, whichever one it happens to be, is the only possible culprit.
The problem is these theories rarely prove to have any merit at all, & like with most such things, even when there is some merit to them, the complete explanation is more complicated. For instance, some users do a perfectly executed clean install & then ruin it by reintroducing the same bit of software that was the real problem in the first place. Some users don't know what a clean install is & mistakenly say they did one. Some eventually find & eliminate a different cause for their particular problems but never report that. Sometimes coincidence is involved -- with millions of users upgrading the chances that in some cases it is not are slim to none.
Basically, it is like anything else on the Internet. You can find something to support anything imaginable because people can imagine anything & too many of them ignore anything that doesn't support that or just don't make the effort to look for it in the first place.

  • I updated to Yosemite and now Iphoto says it's incompatable.  Downloaded the new version 3 times now and still get the same message.  Restarted Macbook twice and still same problem

I updated my Macbook Pro to Yosemite this morning, (it took almost 2 hours!), and now iPhoto tells me it's incompatable with Yosemite and I need to download the latest version.  I've done that 3 times now and restarted twice, (just in case) and I still get the same message, incompatable...download the latest version of iPhoto.
    Frustrating as ****!

The "latest" version is a bit ambiguous. The App Store may be only showing you the latest version you bought, not the most recent version.
    Which version did you download?
You need to install iPhoto 9.6 and launch this version. If you previously have been running a version of iPhoto 8.x.x., you cannot update, but need to buy the upgrade to iPhoto 9.6 from the "Featured" tab of the App Store..
Then launch iPhoto from the Applications folder. The Dock icon may still be tied to the older version.
Also, depending on the version you upgraded from, you may need to run the iPhoto Library Upgrader, if your iPhoto Library has been created by iPhoto 7.1.2 or earlier, see this link:   iPhoto '11: About the Library Upgrader

Thanks for that 'sberman' - because my iPhone is backed-up to my work computer (only at this stage) I have had to call our IT Department in Adleaide. (4 times this morning). The last guy managed to get the phone into 'DFU Mode' - no more recovery mode screen - (kind of 'asleep' perhaps) from my understanding of same. I am awaiting a call again from IT so they can get my computer to actually recognise my iPhone on the C Drive. This also happened to  one of my colleagues in Newman (WA). She got so frustrated with the whole process that she bought another phone the next time she was in 'civilisation.' She hasn't had any problems since. (Cross fingers).
    Thanks again, Sandra2474.

    Are the messages successfully sent?
If so, what happens to a message after it is successfully sent has nothing to do with the cell phone that sent the message.

Is it possible to attach a bluetooth speaker to my mac and still use the mac's speakers at the same time, so I can have music in two rooms (from the mac in the lounge and the  bluetooth speaker in the kitchen? It seems to be a choice of either/or as when I pair my speaker the sound stops from the mac's speakers.

    No.

  • My iMac boots up and the mouse curser will move but nothing responds to the click. I was in the Apple store today and they reset the permissions, but still same problem. Help!!!

My iMac boots up fine and the mouse appears to be working fine however nothing responds to the mouse click. I took it to the Apple store today and they checked and repaired the permissions. I brought it home and still have the same problem. Does anyone have any ideas?

Hi, thanks for trying to help!
I just blew out the dust and turned it on again to the same problem.
So I tried holding the shift key which did something but then on reboot I got the same problem but this time worse, see here...
So I tried the alt key but that just gave me two startup disk options, both of which didn't work (they led to the same problem).
Then I tried CMD+s and followed your instructions, see below...
I just held the power button down and turned it on again and the same problem happened again.
    Any further thoughts?
    Thanks!
    Alex

  • After repairing permissions, in Mac OS X, I ask the utility to verify permissions again and the same problems are shown, as if I had not repaired anything. What's happening?

What you are seeing are messages. It's ok.. it won't do any good to repeatedly repair permissions. As long as you see Repair Permissions Complete when it's finished, you are good to go.
Also, if you see any messages that say: SUID: That can be ignored.
Mac OS X: Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions messages that you can safely ignore
Keep in mind, the only time you need to repair permissions is for troubleshooting.

    Hi Victoriahernandez10,
Sorry to hear you are having issues with your new iPhone. If you are having issues receiving iMessage messages across your iPhone and your Mac, you may want to double-check that your phone number and your Apple ID are correctly linked and that all your contact addresses/numbers are set up, as outlined in the following article:
iOS and OS X: Link your phone number and Apple ID for use with FaceTime and iMessage - Apple Support
