Grey 'smudge' the middle of the screen??

OS X Yosemite
iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2011)
Processor 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
Memory 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Startup Disk Macintosh HD
Graphics AMD Radeon HD 6750M 512 MB
Not sure exactly when it started but I noticed it about half an hour ago and have come straight online to 'troubleshoot' the problem. The is a grey smudge/shadow in the middle of my screen and I am unable to remove it by cleaning the screen or restarting my computer. I have seen similar issues posted with no resolve so I don't know if people discovered a fix or just gave in and took the computer into the Apple store. With no way to transport the computer safely into the city centre, I would like to avoid doing that if at all possible.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Rebecca

This is a well documented issue:

Unfortunately I also share the same issue with you, only 2 years earlier, and basically all iMac of that model are bound to have that problem eventually.
In short, somehow dust is able to get into and accumulate INSIDE the LED component, specifically between the glass and the first layer of the LED display unit.  Note that this is NOT between the LED and the protective glass which you can touch, it's IN the LED itself and you will have to dissemble the display unit to have any chance to fixing it, which is a high-risk surgery unless you are a techie.
Many of us, myself included, just decided to live with it instead of taking the risk, though it's your call at the end of the day.
Here is a youtube video FYI so you can see exactly what you will have to do to fix it yourself, good luck.

help a grey line in the middle of the screen

Probably a hardware issue, it could be a failing display or graphics card. I'd recommend running Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode 2-3x to see if it finds any errors. At some point you will need to make an appointment at  our local Apple Store or AASP for professional assesment.
BTW please complete your profile, you can find the link under Your Stuff in the upper right of this screen. At the very least let us know the version of OS X on your computer and what computer you own.

what does the box say?  Is is a black box with grey writing?

My macbook turns on to a grey screen with a folder in the middle of the screen.  I don't know what to do to get it to turn on...
This has never happened.  I have tried to do the command-option-p-r trick and that didn't work. HELP

That folder with the question mark icon means that the MacBook can't find the boot directory. That can either mean it can't find the hard drive or the hard drive data is somehow corrupted.
Put your install DVD into the optical drive and reboot. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option key until the Install Disk shows up). That willforce your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
Once it has finished booting and you Choose Your Language and you are at the Install screen launch Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is then select the First Aid Tab run Repair Disk and if that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions.
If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead.

  • My iPad 1st gen has a large grey stripe in the middle of the screen. Any help would be appreciated

It was not dropped and has no other damage and works fine EXCEPT i cannot view the middle part of the screen.
From other posts and searching the web this seems to be a "KNOWN" 1st Gen issue and I am ot the only one.
Anyone had any luck with getting this solved ??
My solution was I just bought a new iPad 4th Gen because I did not want to be without my favorite device but am discouraged by the fact Apple is NOT commenting on this issue or offering a fix
I am hoping that this 4th Gen did not come with a 2 year expiration date - for almost $800 bucks it should last until I decide - not until it is completely disabled by a manufacturer defect as in what happened with my 1st Gen
I still expect my 1st Gen to work and need any suggestions in dealing with the issue as (OF COURSE) the device is no longer under warranty

    $100 you can buy a replacement screen => http://www.ifixit.com/iPad-Parts/iPad-Wi-Fi-Front-Panel-Assembly/IF180-000?utm_s ource=ifixit_guide&utm_medium=guide_intro&utm_content=required_items&utm_term=ip ad_wi-fi
Then use the guide to swap out the screen => http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing+iPad+Wi-Fi+Front+Panel+Assembly/4174/1
I had a similar issue last year when I bought my new Samsung HDTV. There was a strip of discoloration going down the middle of the screen about 3 inches wide. Samsung replaced the screen as there was nothing that could be done to fix it.
I imagine this means the crystals in the screen are somehow damaged. It may not be your fault, they could have just gone bad from bad manufacturing or whatever. There is software for desktop computers that runs through series of tests for attempting to correct issues with an LCD screen, but it would be difficult to run this software on an iPad screen. I doubt there is an app that does anything similar, but you can check the app store or the Cydia market if jailbroken.
    Good luck

  • Why does iphoto screen go grey and a spinning wheel in the middle of the page and nothing else

can someone tell me why i always get a spinning wheel in the middle of the page and nothing else when trying to open iphoto

Either the program, the iPhoto Library or the iPhoto preference file is hosed.
First thing is first, backup your user file folders to a external hard drive and disconnect.
The easiest (and most likey the cause of your issue) to fix would be the iPhoto preference file
    iPhoto preference file fix
Look in your /Users/Library/Preference for a file like
    com.apple.iphotopreferences.plist
    or
    com.apple.iphoto.plist
and delete it and reboot, restart iPhoto and re-enter your preferences.
If your on OS X Lion, your going to have to use the Finder's "Go To" to get to the Library as it's hidden as in Snow Leopard it's not.
    Reinstall iPhoto
If that doesn't resolve your issue and your on Lion, you can redownload the iLife software from the MacAppStore and simply reinstall it, which will overwrite iPhoto and fix it.
If your on Snow Leopard you reboot holding c from the 10.6 grey installer disks (only) that came with your comptuer and simply reinstall OS X 10.6 which will reinstall iPhoto (the 10.6.3 Snow Leopard retail disk doesn't have iLife)
If you purchased iLife from the boxed set, then reinstall it.
If you had iLife from 10.5 and your on 10.6 or 10.7, or got it free with 10.6 and now on 10.7, then your going to have to wait until you try the next step (then extract iPhoto from the installer disk using Pacifist or purchase iLife)
    Rebuild iPhoto Library
If that doesn't resovle your issue you can right click (or control click) on the iPhoto Library and "Show Package Contents" inside will be a folder with all your original photo's. Copy these out and move the iPhoto Library out of the Pictures folder and rename it (if you can) so iPhoto can't find it.
Then restart iPhoto and see if it creates a new iPhoto Library, then simply import the pictures from the copy you made.
If it fails to work after this, there is a corrupted picture in your iPhoto, you'll have to repeat the same process with importing a few pictures at a time until you can locate the corrupted ones.

  • Since upgrading to Yosemite my old email address is showing in the middle of my screen and I can't remove it.

Since upgrading to Yosemite on my iMac I have my old email showing in a small grey box in the middle of my screen. I don't know how to remove it.

The address has now gone - all I needed was another restart. But it did take two attempts. Thanks for your interest. Have also found that the iMac is slower at the moment. Goodness only knows what else I will find when I restart other progs.

  • There is black bar in the middle of my screen.

There is black bar in the middle of my screen. I have a Macbookair, 2011. I was writing in word when it happend.
I have restarted the machine, its still there, done a hardware test, nothing is wrong. What should I do

If the black bar appears immediately upon booting (at the grey screen) then I'd suspect you have a hardware failure of part of the screen.
An external monitor could help confirm that it's not a software issue where OSX *thinks* there should be a black bar there :-) .  If you hook up an external monitor and have OSX set to mirror the displays (which I believe is the default setting for a new monitor) see if the black bar is also on the external monitor.  If it's not, I think you need a new screen for the Air.

Have you tried giving it a reset? Hold down the sleep and home keys for about 20 seconds. When you see the silver apple let go and let it reboot and see if htat helps.

  • When I try to open a picture from email all I get is a yellow mozilla square in the middle of my screen and it won't go away unless I restart and I can't view the picture.

Why can't I open pictures sent to me in email. All I get is a yellow mozilla box in the middle of my screen that won't go away unless I restart.

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later...
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Is there a way to force my iPad to shut down? I "slid" to turn off three hours ago. The "wheel" is still spinning in the middle of the screen.

Is there a way to force my iPad to shut down? I "slid" to turn off three hours ago. The "wheel" is still spinning in the middle of the screen.

Yeah, hold down the top Sleep button and the Home button simultaneously.  Continue to hold until the screen goes blank and the Apple logo appears.  Ignore the red slider midway through this process, just keep holding both buttons down until the Apple logo appears -- it takes about 8-10 seconds.  That should do a soft reset and fix your problem.
