Grey Thumbnails

I just recently purchase a new Macbook pro and all of the thumbnails in iMovie went grey. I've tried deleting the thumbnails and cache and renaming it but nothing seems to work. Does anyone know a solution to this problem?

I experienced this problem once when initially upgrading to v1.1 and converting the library. Never did discover really where the problem lay but more on a wing and a prayer from the menu I chose Export Metadata To File. After that the images appeared but as I say whether or not this is where the problem lay I couldn't really say.

  • Grey Thumbnails of some offline photos

    My configuration
    Using LR 3.2
    Windows 7 64bit
    8 gigs ram
I have a catalog of over 200,000 photos spread over one local and 4 external disks.
    Intended result
I need to be able to view all thumbnails for all offline photos
    Problem
When I am scrolling through the thumbnails on the offline disks, randomly some of the thumbnails are grey. I can spend HOURS rendering previews while the disks online but when they are off line I have randomly grey thumbnails again.
Steps taken to try and fix the problem
imported ALL photos to a new catalog - issue happens with new catalog
Render standard preview of all photos - issue still happens
Render full preview of all photos on one external drive - when drive is offline issue still remains

    Hi Savage,
I'm afraid I don't have a solution for you, but if you want, you can file an official bug report here: http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform.

  • Mini bridge in CS6 Photoshop displaying grey thumbnails

    Hello,
I"m on a MAC platform and working with CS6 Photoshop with minibridge (thumbnails preview at the bottom). When I preview the images, the thumbnails are all grey.
Does anyone has an answer to switch back to normal view.
    Thanks!
    sntm

    Hello,
Thank you for replying to this discussion. The grey  thumbnail preview occurs only in minibridge when I launched Photoshop CS6, not the case with the regular bridge. I can preview thumbnails with images in the regular bridge. Nonetheless, I've tried purging cache but to no avail, grey thumbnails still displaying in the mini bridge.
    Thanks,

  • Thousands of grey thumbnails with duplicate ._IMG* filenames?

    Hi
I have iPhoto 9.5.1 for Mavericks and have 10's of thousands of grey thumbnails that I cannot view. When I check the info on these they all show with a ._ prefix. E.g. "._IMG_0041", when I search for IMG_0041 I can see the photo fine. I have gone through all the first aid options of rebuilding thumbnails to rebuilding database and still I can see these grey thumbnails.
My question is what are these and why am seeing them and can I safely delete these without causing other issues?
    Thanks

Has it ever been on a FAT or NTFS drive or a NAS? It sounds very much like what happens when such a drive sees the resource fork of a file and doesn't know what to do with it. You get a dummy file with a leading .and the same fileame.

  • IPhoto 5.0.4 Grey thumbnails

upgrade to iPhoto 5 shows 1900 grey thumbnails and 100
pictures in my library from iPhoto 4 with 2000 photos
I rebuilt the iPhoto library and have 1900 grey thumbnails
and 2000 photos the albums if selected bring up
    the grey thumbnails
    Anyway I can fix it?

    Hi CozMacRay,
The upgrade to 5.0.4 and the rebuild of the Library are two of the fixes for the gray thumbnails. You have tried both and they didn't help.
You can check out these two pages and see if there is anything else you can try.
If nothing works, you may have to follow the instructions on Page 2 to create a new library.

good luck and get back with any results.

  • Grey thumbnail pics after rebuilding question mark thumbnails

    Hi there,
Is there anyone who can help me with this:
I use iphoto11 and it looks like a whole bunch of pics from 2010-11 have gone first into thumbnails with ?marks, some I could go to 'revert to original' a tedious process then I follow the iphoto blog/instruction retrieve thumbnails only and cahes both- long process! and... now am left with grey thumbnails hurray!
what do I do ? Any help to help me out of this would be much appreciated Mirella

Sorry but you're post is not very clear. But to rebuild thumbnails:
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to rebuild the thumbnails. It can take 3 or 4 goes for this to work

  • How can I restore grey thumbnails and photos?

When I look through my photos all but three of the thumbnails appear as grey and the actual photos will not load. Is there any way to reverse this?
    Thankyou

    - Do you know for a fact that there is no back up on any computer?
    - Did you back up to icloud?
Also if you had an email signed in on the phone you could try singing in to the email again in settings>mail contacts & calendars then turn contacts on and see if they transfer back to the phone from your mail server.

  • Lightroom 4.0: Troubleshooting Video Codecs?  Fix grey thumbnails?

    Hello.
I just purchased and installed Lightroom 4.0 - excited that it would be able to help manage my videos as well as pictures.
Everything works fine for some of my videos (from my Canon cameras), but older videos from my Olympus cameras (including an E-620 and SP-560UZ) won't generate thumbnails or play.  The thumbnails are grey, and have a warning triangle with the message "Lightroom has encountered problems reading this video".
I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, and I have K-Lite CODEC pack and just re-installed the newest version of QuickTime.
The video files that are failing are mostly AVI format, and open correctly in QuickTime Player and Windows Media Player so the necessary CODECS must be installed, but are either not compatible with Lightroom or Lightroom isn't finding them.
The Windows Control Panel and K-Lite CODEC pack both have myriad options for tweaking CODECS, but I don't really know what I'm doing.
Can anyone suggest how to troubleshoot this problem?  Either to find more information on what is going wrong, or on how to fix it?
I am very happy to provide more detailed information if that would help.
Thanks in advance for any assistance,
    Ian

I am having the same problem. Any ideas on how to fix it?
    Thnak in advance,

  • Grey previews & grey thumbnails

I have used Aperture, to great effect, since it came out some two years ago. The other week, for no good reason my thumbnails went grey; the preview only showed whilst loading then goes grey.
Images do not export to Mail.
The images all open in Photoshop, no probs.
I have deleted all Aperture files I can find, in user, user/library, hdd/library/app-support, .../library/receipts, etc, etc. Emptied trash, re-booted and re-installed Aperture.
I have visited the Genius Bar (I'll comment no further on that experience - guess I'd have been OK if it was an iPod problem). I have again removed all Aperture files I can find and again reinstalled. In an empty Aperture I imported one new, fresh image. Thumbnail and preview went grey.
I'd really appreciate some pointers on this one. I guess the Adobe Lightroom will do the trick?

This problem occurred for me last night for the fist time. App 2.01 gave me problems re. thumbnailing but not 2.1.
Ap began generating a project's thumbs on its own (1000 pix, all previously generated), while no-one was using it. Selecting pix led to the grey screen, and any scroll led to all thumbs being regenerated. Took about a hour to sort out: after rebuilding lib I switched to viewer plus browser mode, and Ap recovered its dignity after a few minutes.
    However....
Earlier in the day out in the field I backed up those same pix from card to laptop (which does not use Ap) and checked a couple using Preview. Grey screens appeared there too, and never have before, and the pix were mighty slow to display.
So am wondering if this is an occasional issue with the way NEFs are sometimes written or downloaded, or the time at which an uploading device is disconnected. Are others with this prob also using Nikon? Or downloading direct from camera instead of into a finder folder first?
    best

  • Mixed up and grey Thumbnails...

    Hi!
I have iPhoto installed on an 17'' iMac with OS 10.3.9 running. My problem is : some of my thumbnails in iPhoto are greyed out and there are others that link to totally different pictures as shown on the thumbnail.
I have +6000 pictures in the libary, could this be the problem? What should I do to solve it? Is there e.g. a possability to rebuild an index or thumbnail-index or something like that?
    Hope someone can help me!
    Thanks in advance!
    Marco.

    Hi Walter,
    A rebuild should help.
    Try this:
Before doing a rebuild make sure iPhoto's trash bin is emptied. You can do this by control clicking on the trash bin, or from the menu bar under iPhoto.
    Close iPhoto
    Duplicate the iPhoto Library folder
Drag the duplicate to the desktop (hopefully you have enough room on your hard drive for the duplicate.)
Launch iPhoto holding down the Command and Option keys until you see the rebuild options screen.
Choose the first three options. If you were missing photos in your library, also choose the last option. Be advised that you will get a roll of orphaned photos and it might be quite huge. Most of them will already be in your iPhoto library, but use caution when deleting anything from this roll until you are sure the photos are still in your library in another place. It might be a good idea to share/export this roll of photos just in case you need to import them again.
Back to the rebuild, depending on the size of your library it might take some time. When it is done, hopefully your photos will be there.
You might see some unexpected results as I did when I did a rebuild. Photos had been moved to wrong dates, video clips had lost their duration info and some were even orphaned from the jpg pointer file. It took me some time to straighten it out again.
This is the reason to make a duplicate before you rebuild, in case you do not like the result. If you don't like the result, close iPhoto, then delete the rebuilt library and drag the duplicate back into the Pictures folder making sure the name is iPhoto Library. Launch iPhoto and it should open the library in the Pictures folder.

  • Grey thumbnails/grey images

Although my images are able to be opened in Preview and Photoshop, they are merely grey rectangles in my Iphoto app. Following previous posts I rebuilt my Iphoto Library which allowed me to see my last imported roll of images (thumbnails as well as actual photos) however none of my previous rolls are viewable.
    Should I reinstall Iphoto?
    Thanks for your help
    Gregg

    Hi Greg,
If a rebuild didn't work, then you should create a new library and import the images from the old library to get your images back.
A reinstall of iPhoto will not help.
    Close iPhoto
Rename your messed up iPhoto Library to "iPhoto Library_old"
Drag this library to your desktop
Hold down the Option key and launch iPhoto
This is the window you will get
Create a new library or choose a library to open
Choose to create a new library
Once this new empty library is open it is time to import the images from your old library
    Go to File>add to library
Navigate to the old library on your desktop and highlight it in the window, then click the "open" button.
iPhoto will start importing the images from your old library
    This is what to expect:
Your images will be imported in nice dated rolls. (make sure your view is set to sort by rolls to see it) There are a couple of caveats to this. You will get rolls named "Originals" These rolls will contain your video clips and your original images that you had edited. If you had RAW files they would be in those rolls too (I don't do RAW, so I don't know for sure) Delete what you don't want from those rolls. You will also get the jpeg pointer files to your video clips imported. They will just be jpegs and will not point to the video clips anymore as iPhoto made new ones when the clips were imported again. You can delete those. they should be in a roll right next to the newly imported video clips so they are not hard to find. The thumbnail files don't get imported as iPhoto makes new ones when the images are imported.
Once all you images have been imported, check through the library and make sure everything looks ok.
You can now start making your Albums, and do your keywords or any other organizational steps.
You can also delete the old library on the desktop.
It is also a good time to backup this new library to CD/DVD by burning the iPhoto LIbrary folder in the Finder, or copying the iPhoto Library folder to an external drive formatted for Macs, or copying the iPhoto LIbrary folder to an iPod.
    Good luck!
    Lori

  • Grey thumbnails in photo roll of Iphone

    Dear friends,
    I have the following problem.
Sometime ago I saw that most all photos in photo roll of my Iphone 4 (5.1. iOs, no jailbreak) are very pixelized. Though, the same photos in photo stream were absolutely ok.
I checked that I have a fresh back up on iCloud and decided to make the full reset.
After restoration, I found out that pixelized photos are now grey with inscription "jpg" without image - just this text.
Please advise me, how can I get ,y photos back?
    thank you for your help.

i'm having the same problem: all the pictures I'm taking with the Iphone's camera looks pixelized on the device but OK when I send them by email, for example.
I did the full reset but the problem persist. It's really bizarre...

  • Not opening projects and grey thumbnail

Hi, I've done about 5 different movies using iMovie. The projects are done (I didn't export them yet) but for some reason I cannot open them anymore. And the thumbnail is gray, not showing the movie's frame.

    Hi Lolgag,
I deleted iMovie from my Mac and installed it again using the original installation CD. It solved my problem.
Hope it solves your problem too!

  • Grey thumbnail, grey loupe view-- no photograph displayed in library mode

When I import a new batch of photographs my library mode, both in grid and loupe view will not show my new photographs.  And not that it just takes a bit of time to load-- the picture will not show, only gray.  This has only happened in the last month or so.  Previously everything worked well.
To get my pictures showing I have to go to develop mode and view them.  The loading is taking considerably longer than it used to as well.  I've been into my preference pane and can't see what to do.  As per a tutorial I upped my "Camera Raw Cache Settings" to 50 GB.  The problem hasn't coincided with this change however.  I don't know what is going on but I am frustrated to have all photos load but not show up in Grid or Loupe mode.
Any ideas?  I have over 7,000 photos in library.  I've validated and checked library and it comes back okay.
    Thanks for your help.
My computer is a newer 27" imac so I should have plenty of juice to run the program.  Hard drive space isn't an issue as I have a 1TB.

Sounds like a corrupted preview cache.  Let's test that theory.  Close LR. Find your catalog on your hard drive, and rename the Previews.lrdata or move it to another location - you can delete it later when we know the new one's ok.  Now restart LR, go to Grid view, select all and go to Library menu > Previews > Render Standard Previews.  Hopefully that'll bring back your previews and if everything looks correct, you can then delete the previous one.

  • Clips thumbnails lose audio then turn grey

I have read several of you having similar problems and have not yet found a fix. I have an iMac that came with Tiger and ILife 08 which I bought at the end of Sep. Upgraded to Leopard. Video clips imported into event library don't last long before: 1. the audio goes 2. the thumbnails turn grey. They can be put into project, but will not render so that iDVD will work. I would rather not spend the $ on Final Cut Express and have to learn new software, but iMovie 08 isn't cutting it unless I can get a fix. Thanks.

I was also having this issue. I had the latest version of iMovie from iLife 08. I took the iMovie application and trashed it. I then reinstalled the iLife 08 suite to get back to the 7.0 (471) version. When I did this and reopened iMovie the sound for all of my clips had returned and the grey thumbnails were gone. Good luck.
