Grey "!" when opening photos in iPhoto V6

I've probably done something really stupid (as I always do with this laptop!). I noticed that my HD(60gb) is nearly full. I'm not sure why because I only have 20gb of music and 3gb of photos. I t looked in the HD and it seems that my "users" folder is about 30 odd GB so I started deleting thing (I know, I'm sorry). I checked afterwards that I still had my music and then checked my photos. I have the photos in thumbnail but cannot open them in iPhoto itself. I can open the photos in preview and photoshop. I have over 3,000 photos and am GUTTED.
I have also thought about getting an external HD. What's the deal here. Can I transfer all my music over? And what will happen when I want to play it? Do I need to transfer itunes too?
Thanks in advance!!

First thing:
Go to your Pictures Folder and then to your iPhoto Library Folder. Have a look inside for the Originals Folder. Are your full sized pics there?
If so:
Try these in order - from best option on down...
1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums back.
3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Roll Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
Regards
TD

You are posting in the "icloud on my mac" forum, but your profile mentions Windows.  If using a mac, you need to have iphoto or aperture installed in order to receive new photos via photo stream.  If using windows, try posting in the iCloud on a PC forum.  You'll get better help there.

  • When importing photos into iPhoto I get an error Unreadable Files:

When importing photos into iPhoto I get an error Unreadable Files: The following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data).
I can open the JPG in question with PREVIEW, photoshop etc.. actually if I try to import a photo that I had originally imported it also fails..
    Please help... Thank you..

I too had this error message (and to be honest, it was becoming a bit of a pain). I resolved it in a slightly different way to Terence.
I had 10 photos that were allegedly unreadable; however, as Terence rightly says, they are duplicates. When I opened iPhoto I mad a note of each of the files concerned and did a Spotlight search throughout my hard drive.
For each photo, there were four or five duplicates. I deleted all but one of each of the photos and then reopened iPhoto. No more error message.
The original problem stemmed from importing my files directly from an external device I was using with a previous computer [that was running XP].
    Anyway, hope this helps.

  • Since i upgraded to Yosemite, when importing photos to iPhoto, they no longer appear in the 'events' summary in library. Why is this and how can i amend?

Since i upgraded to Yosemite, when importing photos to iPhoto, they no longer appear in the 'events' summary in library. Why is this and how can i amend?

The events may be incorrectly sorted. Try to sort the events by date, while in "Events" view.
Go to the "View" menu: Sort Photos > By Date > Descending. That should bring the most recent events to the top of the list.

  • Photoshop CC freezing when opening photo(s)

When opening photos into Photoshop CC, photoshop somewhat freezes. It appears that it is trying to open the file, but nothing happens. I have tried to let it sit for about 30 minutes, to let it runs it course, with no progress. This happens when opening a single photo or opening multiple photos at a time. The only way to get out of this, is to Control, Alt, Delete. I have tried closing out of Photoshop and going back in and even rebooting the computer completely, with no luck. Each time, I get the same thing. This all seems to have started after I ran the newest update.

Have you trashed the preferences as mentioned here?

  • When importing photos from iphoto to Aperture....

When importing photos from iphoto to Aperture 3 it shows two versions of each image. One is original and one is iphoto edited.  It shows this for every picture even if it was never edited in iphoto.  Has anyone ever experienced this?  Is so, what image should I use to edit in iphoto?

This is asked and covered a lot here, a search of the list will bring up numerous other threads covering this. Also the More Like This box on the right side of the page will show you other posts on this topic.
This post, Duplicates when importing from iPhoto is the most recent example.
Briefly iPhoto took even the most trivial change to an image as an edit and created a new image. The most common reason for this is rotated images.
As for which image of the two you want to keep, that's entirely up to you. If there is really no difference between the two then you can keep either it makes no difference.
The thread I linked to above will explain how to use Aperture's filters to gather up all of one or the other.

  • Problems opening photos in iPhoto

Hi aim having problems opening photos in iPhoto?

    Hi
Remember: we cannot see your machine. There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 8 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS.  So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Basic things like :
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For instance: 'iPhoto won't export' is best explained by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that any helper is simply guessing. More information means you get better assistance.

When I double click on an event my photos will not open.

im on mac version mavericks/ iphoto version 9.5.1.
This worked fine two days ago.

Hi Larry, thanks for the reply.  That did not work.  When I click the event in iphoto, then double click to open, it does nothing.  I can however click the event, then click edit and scroll through the pictures that way.  It is a suitable but inconvenient work aorund and frustrating nonetheless.
I did what you suggested and clicked through all the repair options unfortunately that did not resolve the problem.  I still can't double click the event to open the photos.  I can also see the files in the finder view under master and thumbnail folder... which will open the photo in iphoto but still the original issue remains.
    Any other suggestions?

  • Opening photos in iPhoto - size query

    Hello
I have iPhoto '11  version 9.4.3  and use Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.4 on a 24" iMac around 4 years old
When I now open photographs in iPhoto, instead of a nice big clear and attractive picture, I see a small version like this:-
Please can you tell me how to restore things to how they should be?
Any help will be much appreciated!
    Dave

If you have plenty of space, I'd create a new folder on the Desktop and use the search window from above to copy all full size images to that folder.
Sort the photos by size, select all photos starting from the top of the window to the last sizes you want, and copy them to that folder (hold down the ⌥-key,  and drag the photos from the search window to the folder on the Desktop. The cursor should turn into to indicate copying).
Then import this folder into iPhoto, with "File > Import to Library". When prompted for duplicate images, select "Don't import" duplicates:
iPhoto will craete new events by auto splitting the folder into events, according to your settings.
You may still need to weed out duplicates afterwards.
And I would do this in a new iPhoto library, and not import into the old library, if all your photos are only thumbnails  in that library. Switch to a new iPhoto Library with "File > Switch to Library > Create New".
If the photos were isolated in one older library, you could try to rescue that library with iPhoto Library Manager, but so I have little hope.  Perhaps LarryHN has a simpler solution

  • "Unreadable files" when importing photos into iPhoto

OK, I just recently got a new iMac - my first time using iPhoto. All seemed well for a while... until I started to import my photos into iPhoto from my HD (which I had copied over from my old G3).
The problem was that as I was importing some of the photos I got an error message saying the following:
    "Unreadable files: 7
The following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognizable file type or the files may not contain valid data)."
Now I really don't understand why it's saying this, as the 7 files it is referring to are just normal jpegs straight my from digi-cam. They are just like all the hundreds of other photos that were successfully imported.
Any ideas or help would be much appreciated!
    Thanks.

    Abstractman23:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Were the photos you were trying to import located within an old iPhoto library folder/package? When you got the message did iPHoto display the file names of the files it couldn't import? What were they?
If you were trying to import a library folder then the unrecognized files would be the database files that are part of the library structure.
If you are trying to move your old library from the G3 to the new Mac, just copy the iPhoto LIbrary folder/package intact to the Picture folder of the new Mac. Move any other library out beforehand. Download and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, putting your administrator login name, long or short, in the owner and group sections. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field. Now launch iPhoto and it will open the library and, in an older version, update it to iPhoto 7.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
