Grey X icon on PDF files

I recently installed Reader X on my Windows 7 pc and now when I go to a network share, some of the PDF files are appearing with Grey X's on them.  If I try to open the file, it says access denied.
It doesn't seem to present on PDF files newer than 2010, but older PDF files 2009 and under do seem to be affected.
If you right-click on the Grey X PDF file and send the file to IE, it opens fine, or if you move the file to a local drive, the X icon changes and it can be opened in Reader X.
What is causing the Grey X icon and how can it be resolved?
Thanks!
Emma

Your question does not provide any details about where the PDF is being displayed (in what software, on what platform).
PDF files displayed within operating system browsers (Windows Explorer, Mac Finder) take their icon from the application associated to open the file, NOT from anything embedded within the PDF itself - so they cannot be changed. "Thumbnail" previews typically render the first page of a document.

  • Strange Icon behavior: PDF files now show an iPod Icon

    A week or so ago, the icon for PDF files on my G5 (10.5.5) switched to become the icon for an iPod. All PDF files now look like iPods. If only I had so many iPods!
    Waaaaaay back, one would "rebuild the desktop" and it would correct many icon problems. I don't know what to do these days.
    Any ideas what this is about?

    It might be that the LaunchServices database is corrupt and needs rebuilding. Launch the Terminal app, copy & paste in the below command, hit the return key, quit the Terminal app, restart, and check the icons on those files:
    */System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchS ervices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user*

  • Illustrations greyed-out when printing PDF file from Adobe Reader

    Hello,
    From within PageMaker 7 I've made a 52-page PDF document in Distiller (selected job option is for Print) and uploaded it to my website.  It contains many greyscale illustrations (TIFs and JPGs first imported into PageMaker), and text.  I am able to view the PDF file over the net, and can print the illustrations and text on each page with no problem.  I am using an old HP laser printer (LaserJet 5L).  Other users are able to view the same PDF document on the net, and they can see all the illustrations and text on every page.  However, some users who have tested it are reporting that when they try to print out the pages on their own printers, most of the illustrations are greyed-out between pages 3 and 51.  The text is printing correctly on their printers.  The images on the front and back cover are printing, and so is an 11-page comic strip (made up entirely of 11 TIFs, with no additional text).  Can anyone work out why all the other illustrations throughout the document are printing greyed-out on their printers?
    Thanks
    Roger3

    I am replying to my own question.
    After posting here, I received feedback from a viewer that the PDF file is downloading and printing out pages with no greying-out of the illustrations.  It looks to me as though the problems are arising from other viewers' slow internet connections and/or hardware RAM for printing, especially if trying to print all pages at once, rather than Saving As to hard drive, then printing.
    Thanks,
    Roger3

  • How to create ICon/Cursor from pdf files

         I was able to create ICon from jpg file without problem but I couldn't create ICon from pdf files.
    Here my code:
    var myDoc = app.newDoc();
    myDoc.importIcon("myIcon"); // it worked when I chose a jpeg image, but it didn't
    //when chose a pdf file.
    icon = myDoc.getIcon("myIcon");
    oIcon = util.iconStreamFromIcon(icon);
    myDoc.closeDoc(true);
    app.addToolButton({
                   cName: "myButtoon",
                   oIcon: oIcon,
                   cExec: "app.alert('Someone pressed me!')",
                   cTooltext: "Push Me!",
                   cEnable: true,
                   nPos: 4
       //app.removeToolButton("myButtoon");
    My goal is to create buttons which have icons from a pdf file (stamp) and when user click on these buttons, the cursors become the icon . And then, when user click on the document, the iCon will be showed in the document. The point is: is there anyway to create icons/cursors/stamps from one pdf file. Because the stamp is changeable, when user changes the color/shape of the pdf file, the icons/cursors/stamps will automatically change
    What kind of pdf format do I have to use?
    I used the sample "SignHere.pdf" in stamps folder of Acrobat but it didn't work.
    Thanks.

    The SDK has all the information - but certainly there are only samples for those common actions that users have been doing for years.  Most developers don't recreate stuff already present in the application - such as the Stamp plugin - so we don't have samples of such things.
    But all the pieces you need are present in the SDK - it's just necessary obvious.  You will need to learn about the details of how the plugin APIs work to create the toolbars and toolbuttons, and then how to handle cursors.  You will then need to learn about PDF details in order to be able to take an existing PDF, potentially modify it (eg. Change the color(s)) and then place it onto another PDF.
    The methods you listed are from JavaScript - there are alternative methods for plugins, such as the AVConversion APIs.

  • Acrobat Pro 9 - Disable thumbnail preview in PDF file icons on Desktop

    After upgrading to Acrobat Pro 9, the file icons of PDF files on my Windows 7  desktop changed to showing a thumbnail preview. I want to get the standard PDF file icon back for all PDF files. Can someone please tell me how?
    Thanks.

    Did you ever find an answer for this??? I had the same issue and was searching for an answer. I saw this and since I fixed mine I thought I would tell you what I did. Also, in case someone else finds this and needs an answer.
    Opened Windows Explorer -> Tools -> Folder Options
    Go to the View tab
    Check "Always show icons, never thumbnails"
    Hit Apply
    All your PDF files on your desktop should now show with the generic PDF icon.
    Reverse this to get the preview icon "thumbnails".

  • PDF files - no preview icons

    I have searched all over the place... will Tiger show a preview icon for PDF files? I only get an Adobe PDF icon, there is no preview thumbnail. I have Adobe CS Pro installed. Thank you in advance for any suggestions.
    shawnotay

    Hi shawnotay. Welcome to the Discussions.
    Not as you would normally think of preview icons. Specifically:
    - Not if Finder is in Icon or List View.
    - If you put Finder in Column View and select a PDF file, a new column appears that, after a moment, shows a preview image.
    You can assign preview icons to PDFs using Graphic Converter. Using its File > Convert & Modify menu choice, one can use the "Create Icon/Preview" function to create a preview icon for a PDF file. When I've used this, it assigns an image of the first page of the PDF as the preview icon.
    Hope that helps.
    Good luck!

  • Can't restore icons to Acrobat files after install Reader 9.4.1?

    I've lost my icons for Pdf files since a recent download of Reader.  How can I get them back?

    Reader can only save a filled-in form if the document has been Reader-enabled. You can do this with Acrobat (9) using: Advanced > Extend Features in Adobe Reader. In Acrobat 10 it's an option under: File > Save As

  • PDF-files convert themselfes to PSE-files!!

    Need help! All my PDF-files suddenly convert themselfes to PSE-files!! PDF-files sent to me as enclosures in e-mails turn up as PSE-files and is of no use to me. And worse: all my old pdfs spared on my computer has been changed to PSE-files. All icons for PDF-files on my desktop have a blue mark with "PSE" in them instead of the red PDF symbol. And it is impossible suddenly to open them as the pdfs they were spared as. The open as unreadable PSE documents.
    I really don't know what to do about it, so I need HELP!
    Leif Wallquist

    Yes, something has changed. WINDOWS has changed. The files have not changed, because this is nothing to do with the file.
    It works like this: there is a "default association" for a file type. Don't worry about the jargon. What it means is that for each type of file (DOC,TXT,JPG,PDF,PSE...) Windows has an app (program) to run. It also, for each file type, has an icon for that app.
    So, if the default association for PDF files is Adobe Reader then, when you double click a PDF, it opens Adobe Reader. And the icon comes from Adobe Reader.
    But, if the default association for PDF files is Photoshop Elements, when you double click a PDF, it opens Photoshop Elements. And the icon comes from Photoshop Elements. This doesn't mean that they are PSE files!
    When you change the association it affects all of the files, BUT the files don't change.
    As I said, you can probably fix this from Adobe Reader's preferences. You can also sometimes fix it in Windows, with the right click - open with - Adobe Reader. Do you have an "always use this program" option? Try it.

  • When adding a PDF file to a New Message in Mail it does not show up as an icon link, the entire document appears. How can you attach a PDF without the entire document displaying itself?

    After scanning a document, I save the file in a PDF format. When attaching the PDF file to a New message it appears on the entire page instead of a PDF icon link that the recipient can click on to open. Why can't I get the PDF file to appear in a icon format? Thank you.

    Control mouse click the document and select View as icon.

  • How can I retain the attached .pdf files (displayed as icons) from my word file 2010 to a pdf file?

    Hi everybody,
    I have looked for an answer in this forum ... without any good result.
    I worked on a Word 2010 file with some attached pdf files. These attached files are displayed as icons on the word file. If you double click on them, you can consult them. This works very good.
    Problem: I would like to convert this word 2010 file into a pdf file, which keeps the icons (linked to attached files) active. If I "pdf" this with my current system, icons are displayed as pictures: I cannot open the attached files.
    My question is very simple: is it possible to retain these active icons (= to open attached documents) in a pdf file? Which adobe package should I use?
    Many thanks for your help
    cheers
    elgreengo

    No, it's not possible, but I agree it would be a very nice feature.

  • Please Help - PDF File icon No longer working???

    Ok this may sound a bit wierd, but bare with me.  Ok so I just got a new laptop because my old one was going a little wonky..... long story short, it's gone.  So I was transfering some pdf files that I had backed up to an external drive onto my new system.  Both systems are running on Windows 7 Ultimate.  So in a folder I have a number of PDF's stored.  When I open the folder I see all the files, but they all look the same, they all have the default Adobe reader icon.  This is fine, but I would much rather have my old view back.  I used to open the folder and see all of the Covers of the books that are in the pdf's.  How can I get the covers to show as the file icon again as oposed to the Adobe file icon?  There has to be something that I'm missing.  Sorry to have rambled on. I look forward to hearing your sugestions.

    Thanx for the suggestion.  I did the steps that i found on google to create the enable/disable thumbnail option and changing it to enable, i can tell it has changed to enable because other file types show the thumbnails but the pdf files are still not showing.

  • Why are my PDF file icons/files missing from Docs?

    Using Windows Vista 7 -a few years old but never had any problems...
    I'm writing a film script on an old version of Final Draft (5) -it was working great until
    a few weeks ago. Suddenly, all the PDF icons were gone when I went to look for saved PDF files.
    I never write in PDF -it's just the standard way to send a script- however-the system every expects.
    I can still "Save as" PDF however, after saving, that file doesnt appear in my list. When I open from
    the Acrobat icon in the start menu, only a few files appear. I'm not even sure how I got
    acrobat, if it just came free with this computer or if it came with my free trial month in July
    when I down loaded Adobe Premiere (video editing) -- I'm ok paying $9 or whatever to sign
    up with Adobe "again" but not if I'm just doing something wrong and I already have it.

    The Acrobat subscription is about $19.99 per month for Pro. You can also purchase the full product for $499. Your answer may vary depending on your OS (PC or MAC). If something just changed, you might try a repair (open Acrobat and go to Help>repair. Then do updates also.). For more help, provide info on the version of Acrobat and the OS details.
