Greyed out ID3 Tags Artwork problem

I have a few mp3 files(not "read only") that have missing song information when checking the advanced section in the summary tab (window's explorer).
The only ones I can see are the "track number," "Title" and "comments" fields.
For example, the Artist, genre, year, album title, etc fields aren't even visible.
As such, I am not allowed to add any artwork to the songs using itunes. There isn't even a "artwork tab" to click on.
After searching the net for hours I am somewhat getting the idea that I might not have full "permission" to edit the files. Still haven't found any clear explanation or solution to this problem.
Help would be great!

  • Greyed out Face tagging- Still!?!

I have a library of 15,000 photos.  I would say only 1/16th of them have face tags.  I have done library rebuilding.  I have been on the phone with support to try their "Solutions".  I see no spinning wheel next to faces like it's actually working to find more.  However, iPhoto continues to write 387mb to my drive every minute while open.  I am assuming it is finding photos to face tag, but I look through and there isn't that many new face tags.  Terrible that it takes that much space to tag a face.  I have left my library open for about 6 months now and it's still writing and writing to my drive and tagging photos is still greyed out on a majority of my photos.
I want a real answer from someone who is intimate about the program.  If this program was made for a library of 500 photos then just friggin tell me and I will move on!
Does anyone know a proceedure that will fix this issue and force the faces to work properly?  Quickly identifying missing faces and allowing tagging of all photos in libraries this large.

So, what solutions have you tried? It saves time for everyone if you tell us all the things you know already won't work.
There's a question that might yield useful answers. You have provided no details at all, not even the most basic information such as the version of iPhoto, where your Library is stored and so on.
And yes, I would happily say everything I have already written to your face. Frankly, your frustrations with Apple Support are of no interest, nor is your unhappiness. I don't work for Apple, no one here does. But I know something of iPhoto and am often happy to help other users. That said, users who simply whine and are argumentative soon prove tiresome and I quickly lose interest.

  • "Reveal in project" greyed out and match frame problems (Premiere Pro CC 7.0)

I'm trying to reveal a clip in project window by right clicking a clip in timeline and choosing "Reveal in project", but the function is greyed out. Is it because the clips are merged? The clips have one track of video and 1-3 audio tracks depending on clip. When option+right click either only video or audio, i get the "Reveal in project" available, but when clicked, nothing happens.
I also have problems with match frame. When i put a new (merged) clip on the timeline, it works, until i try the match frame again on different time. So it kind of works only on the clip that was previously edited to the timeline, and only once. Works fine with regular clips.
Clips were merged using in or out point as the sync point, and "Remove audio from AV clip" checked. Audio and video sources don't have matching timecodes.
I'm using CC 7.0 on Mac OS 10.7.5.

Is it because the clips are merged?
Yes.  Match Frame does seem to have issues with Merged Clips as well.

  • ID3 tags / artwork confusion

Firstly I need to say that I do not use the iTunes library - I rip all my albums as highest quality mp3s in windows media player and store them as files. I then drag and drop the files I want straight onto my ipod thus bypassing the itunes library and the automatic download of artwork feature. So I then tend to add artwork to my ipod albums manually, however out of about 500 albums, around 20-30 of them already display artwork on the ipod. Where did this come from? I assume it was written into the files when I ripped them. NOw, when you rip files in Media PLayer and youre on the net, usually artwork will be displayed in a box with artist and album, so my question is does windows media player attach artwork information to individual mp3s when you burn them and if so how do you make the program do this all the time? Ande does this have something to do with tags?? Its real handy to drag music onto your ipod and have the artwork already there for you (without using itunes library!! and yes guys I know thats the easy option so please dont tell me that!)
    thanks

++sycning is just so much less hassle. As you tidy your library, update artwork, tags etc. you just sync and every change will be carried on to the iPod.++
So does that happen vice versa too? Like if you edit something on iPod elsewhere then use it on your normal computer..
No, it's one way, from iTunes to the iPod. If you connect an iPod to another computer & manually add or amend a few tracks then next time you sync with your home library those updates would be lost.
I probably going to give in and start building up my iTunes library in the same image as my iPod - just in case I ever have to reload everything! (Although I think its stupid that you cant copy the contents of your ipod INTO your iTunes library.
The aim is to discourage casual piracy with the iPod as vector. iTunes can copy store purchases from the iPod, since it "knows" you have a licence for them. There are 3rd party tools that can copy other media from an iPod into the computer. You could use these, for example, to let you add some stuff to your iPod at work, then pull it into your library at home.
One question though - I have just added music to my library from my huge music drive and it took ages to load in and auto find all the artwork, BUT has all this music been physically copied across into iTunes/an iTunes folder? Its not just effectively short cuts to the original music files you wanted to add to the library is it (ie like winamp!)? I only ask cause I had some old videos from my iPod left in the library and I couldnt play them cause it said couldnt find original file....
It all depends on the options set when you imported your library. Select a track in iTunes and use CTRL-I to "Get Info". At the bottom of the Summary tab is a section showing where the file is located. iTunes can either add files by linking to their existing locations, or make copies inside it's own folder structure. If you have the option to let iTunes "Copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" set then it will have created copies. While it's no bad thing to have a backup there are plenty of posts on this site along the lines of "Help! I've imported my music folder into iTunes to add some new tracks and now it's full of duplicates" to suggest a flaw with this mechanism. For this reason I choose to manually orgainse my music inside the iTunes Music folders before importing into iTunes. Likewise I choose not to let iTunes "Keep iTunes Music folders organised" and maintain control over the layout of my files.

  • ID3 tags that look fine in iTunes are ungood on the iPod touch

I've got 60,000-plus MP3 tracks, collected over a decade, that were encoded by a variety of apps on Macs and PCs. The tracks look OK in iTunes on a Mac, but on an iPod touch, many songs are missing artwork, and others display the lyrics in garbled "mojibake" characters.
If the garbling occurred in all the ID3 tags (Name, Artist, Album, etc.) of a track instead of just the lyrics tag, I'd simply reverse the unicode; but as it's not, the solution has to force the misbehaving ID3 tags/artwork to display correctly. I've tried selecting the problem songs and reassigning the ID3 tag, but iTunes can't or won't overwrite the bad tags.
What does work as a solution is toggling the ID3 tags off and on by selecting the bad tracks in iTunes, right-clicking and choosing "Convert ID3 Tags...", then assigning "None" as the ID3 tag version. Next step is to select "Convert ID3 Tags..." again, this time choosing v2.3 or v2.4 as the ID3 version. That does the trick every time, stripping away corruption in the ID3 tags and forcing the tracks to accept artwork. However, it also truncates tags longer than 30 characters, and deletes existing lyrics and artwork. That makes for a lot of cleanup editing.
Is there a way to make iTunes assign ID3 v2.3 to tracks so as to overwrite the corrupt tags without going through the steps I've outlined? If not, is there an app out there with the mojo to fix these corrupt files?

If the song is in iTunes, and it is in a playlist that you auto-sync your Touch to, then the only things that might cause this problem are:
1- Is this new song un-checked in iTunes? If your Touch is set to sync only checked items that would prevent it from syncing. If that's the case, just enable the checkmark next to the new song and re-sync.
2- Is this playlist a smart playlist that is forced to be limited in size? If so, there is a bug with the 3.1.x OS such that smart playlists that are limited in size will have different contents (and sorted differently) when you compare the playlist on iTunes vs. on the Touch. The solution in this case is to disable Live Updating in the smart playlist definition, then the two versions of the playlist will agree.
3- Is the new song tagged as "Skip when Shuffling"? If so, and if your Touch is in shuffle mode, then the song count in the playlist will not include songs that are designated to be skipped.
See if any of those three things are what is going on. If not, then perhaps you need to reset or restore your Touch, but I doubt that.

  • Problems w/ artwork & ID3 tags

    What up?
I have some albums that just won't allow me to add artwork for them. I did some research and apparently it's to do with my ID3 tags. I selected the songs went to the advanced menu or right clicked but the option 'convert ID3 tags' was not there, it simply didn't exist in the menu. Why would that be?
Another sympton my iTunes has been having is (with this same album) if I single click the song it will add to the song title, a 1-04 (the latter number depends on the track number I click.) Now why would all this be happening?

I selected the songs went to the advanced menu or right clicked but the option 'convert ID3 tags' was not there, it simply didn't exist in the menu. >Why would that be?
    They are not MP3 files.
I have some albums that just won't allow me to add artwork for them
Likely they are WAV files. Also, teh files may be locked/Read Only or you do not have Read/Write perminssions to them.

  • ITunes ID3 tags handling for artwork

I have created MP3 versions of my band's artwork for inclusion in an online radio.  I am running into some issues with ID3 tags.    The MP3s show the artwork and everything just fine on my Mac.  However the artwork doesn't show up in the radio software (Centova) when the files are uploaded.  Because of this, I've got a crash course in ID3 tags--at least the album artwork tags.
It turns out, in ID3 tags version 2, there are no less than 15 different ID3 tags reserved for artwork--meaning you can attach up to 15 separate pieces of artwork (in theory) to each MP3 file.  Here are the tag reservations:
    $00     Other
$01     32x32 pixels 'file icon' (PNG only)
    $02     Other file icon
    $03     Cover (front)
    $04     Cover (back)
    $05     Leaflet page
$06     Media (e.g. label side of CD)
    $07     Lead artist/lead performer/soloist
    $08     Artist/performer
    $09     Conductor
    $0A     Band/Orchestra
    $0B     Composer
    $0C     Lyricist/text writer
    $0D     Recording Location
    $0E     During recording
    $0F     During performance
    $10     Movie/video screen capture
    $11     A bright coloured fish
    $12     Illustration
    $13     Band/artist logotype
    $14     Publisher/Studio logotype
Yes, you read that right, there's a tag for "A bright colored fish".  So here's the rub:  I'm finding that iTunes defaults album artowrk to the first position (00), which has a certain logic to it.  But, I'm finding that this radio software, and some other pro level software looks for cover art in the third tag (Cover Art) be default.  This makes a number of problems.  It means that I'm having to find a serious ID3 tag editor to change the iTunes artowork tag from "00-Other" to "03-Cover Art" in order for it to be properly displayed.
NOW THE QUESTION:  Does iTunes have any sort of method to select which "type" of cover atwork tag you want to apply to the added artwork?  Or am I at the mercy of iTunes' default designation and that's that?

  • Can not edit id3 tags since upgrade to iTunes 8.1: permissions problem (?)

    Hi all,
I am angry at myself for having upgraded to 8.1 before I knew that it's ok, and angry at Apple releasing this update with too many problems. Here is my list:
    (1) I cannot change ID3 tags within iTunes for certain tracks. I usually click on one or several tracks, press Command+i for information, then change the desired tags (e.g. genre, album, etc.) and click ok. Only that iTunes won't let me write anything. I found that I have no longer write permission to exactly these tracks (my music is on an external LaCie Firewire800 HD). What I did so far:
    - I tried to run "Repair permissions" on the internal HD.
    - I clicked on the iTunes music folder on the external hard drive, opened the information window and changed under "Sharing & Permissions" the rights to read&write for my user account. I clicked on "Apply to enclosed items", which should set the permissions to all elements within the folder.
Any ideas? My system is freshly installed (~3weeks old), everything is updated.
    (2) Probably related to (1): certain files and documents on my internal hard drive have wrong permissions. Firefox for example is locked as read only, and I cannot update it via the "Check for update" in the help menu. I know there is an update available, as I am using 3.0.6 and the newest is 3.0.8. Repair permissions did not help. See the screen shot for the grayed out "Check for updates" menu entry.

    (3) In iTunes, I have a smart playlist in which all songs rated with four or more stars are gathered. I found songs in this list that I did not rate yet, and they all have odd "empty" stars in comparison to the songs I rated myself. What's up with that? See screenshot, some of the songs of the album "I love Jazz" have these odd stars:
    http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/8702/picture1zkg.png

That's exactly what I did, it took ~20sec to complete the "apply to enclosed items" command (there was heavy disk access), but it does not improve. The permissions stay the same for the files/folders in question. It's very odd, have a look at the screenshot:
Some folders have correct permissions, others (to which I have no access through iTunes) show "admin" twice as the only user who is allowed to write. Repair permission does not help. I have hundreds of files/folders where permissions are wrong, only since the upgrade recently.

  • Problems with ID3 Tags in iTunes - Desperate need of assistance!

    Hello all...
Desperately need some help. I just spent a very (very) long time going through my entire music collection making sure all album art is present and all tags are corrected to my preferences. Now I want to back up the entire drive (F: drive, I keep my music on a separate drive) to a new hard drive (H: drive). However, in the process I've noticed that not all the changes that I made to the tags have actually saved to the tags themselves, even though they continue to display correctly in iTunes. If I load them into another application or reload them into iTunes from the new drive, not all the tag changes I made in iTunes are showing up. It seems iTunes is perhaps storing this tag info in some kind of internal database? To be specific I am not talking about meta-data like ratings and number of times played. I'm talking about artist, genre, etc.
So my question is this: is there some way to force iTunes to save the data that is currently displayed in iTunes to the ID3 tags?
I've also been disappointed to find out that when adding album artwork, iTunes does not actually save the artwork to the ID3 tags as I assumed. Any way I can force iTunes to do that?
Lastly, if neither of the above are possible, is there an easy way to backup the iTunes database so that all my tags and artwork are present once I remove the current drive and re-load my collection into iTunes from the new drive? Will the change of path prevent me from being able to backup the database?

Hi Ed, thanks for responding so quickly. Yes, they are mp3 files, and yes, I had assumed what you told me, that changes made in iTunes would be made to the mp3 files. I also thought it could have something to do with read only, so I made sure that the files were not read only. But yes, strangely enough, even though the tags show up properly in iTunes, they do not show up properly in other players, and don't show up properly in iTunes if I remove the album, copy the album to the second drive, and load it back into iTunes (only for a portion of the files, but with the size of my collection this would still be time consuming to fix). I don't understand it either, but from research I have done online, it may have something to do with an iTunes glitch relating to the ID3 tag version.
Regardless of how it is supposed to work or what the explanation is, the situation now stands that my tags display perfectly in iTunes but are not all saved to the files perfectly. So I am hoping there is some way I can force iTunes to save the current state of tag info to the files!
About the 2 drives, it's simple. Right now my collection is on F:, and loaded into iTunes, but I want to get rid of that drive as it is IDE and too small, and store my collection on H: instead. I'm just really worried that after moving my collection and reloading into iTunes I will need to re-tag and re-load album artwork all over again. Any tips?

  • I transferred all my Itunes music from an old PC to my new one with Windows 7.  Now I cannot edit "artist" or anything else for the songs.  It is all greyed out and I cannot enter information. Is there any way to correct this problem?

I transferred all of my music from an older PC to my new one with Windows 7.  Now I cannot edit selected songs.  The information is greyed out and I can't type over it (on all my music except NEW downloads).  Can anyone help?  I even have a few songs with NO artist tag and I can't write anything in them either.

It's a permissions problem. Try this: right click on your iTunes icon and choose "run as administrator" that might fix it.

  • Can't edit movie artwork (greyed out on Get Info tabs)

All I need to know is how to be able to add artwork to my movies that are being read form an external hard drive. When I press CMD+I for the get info window the option to even select the Artwork tab is greyed out and unavailabe. How do I get it to add artwork that I have found online?
I did not have this problem when itunes was reading the movies from my actual mac computer it only started when I made itunes read the movies from my external drive. I can still edit the artwork for the ones that are not on my external drive yet and are only on my actual mac computer. Why is this happeneing?

When you add a movie to iTunes you have to make sure it makes a copy of the file in the iTunes Media folder.  Otherwise, you can't edit any of the information on the movie or video.
In iTunes 12, go to Edit-->Preferences
In Preferences, go to Advanced and make sure the "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library".
Unfortunately, you will now have to re-import the movie files into iTunes using "Add File To Library..." Once imported, the movie will sometimes appear under "Home Movies" instead of "Movies" but if you right click on the movie file it will list a menu item called "Get Info" where you can change the "Options" to "Movie". You should also be able to click the "Add Artwork" button.
    Hope that helps.
