Greyed out Volume Format box in Disk Utility 10.4.

Hi,
i'm trying to open up more space on my hard drive by doing a full erase. Available space is about 6GB on a 80GB drive. Running OS X 10.4.11. on a Mac Book Black. Want to install 10.6. SL.
In Disk Utility the Volume Format box is greyed out. It's set as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
How can i change it?
Thanks for any advice.
Mark

How much free space is on the HD, where has all the space gone?
OmniDiskSweeper is likely the easiest/best, and is now free...

And if needed, you can use Terminal to run it in admin mode to see files/folders your user can't see...

Help needed. I have a 3TB external hard drive partitioned into 1TB's. I used one partition as backup for the main computer hard drive. But now it is greyed out as shown in the disk utility and its name changed, i dont know how that happened, i tried verifying and repairing it but had no luck. I also tried mounting and unmounting it but still no solution. Anyone to help please?

Looks bad. I would strongly advise backing up the stuff on the other two partitions as soon as possible in case the rest of the drive goes wrong.
Beyond that, Disk Utility has limited abilities to repair disks, DiskWarrior uses a different approach and might, emphasis might be more successful. It has certainly done the job for me in the past when Disk Utility could not.

  • I had created a partition in my drive, one of which was protected. Unfortunately, I do not remember the password. How do I open that partition? Most of the features are greyed out when I go to disk utility? Help Please!!!

I had created a password protected partition on my drive and unfortunately have lost that password. Please guide me if the drive can be partitioned? To give some more details - I had created 3 partitions, one is main start up drive, then 2nd partition which was password protected and the 3rd partition without password again.
I have used some of the tips Kappy had given on one of the earlier discussion but that has not worked either. Help Pls

Microsoft Office 365 is a subscription - based service. You have to pay for it... and keep paying for it... and paying for it... as in 365 days a year... or lose your hard work.
Office Home Premium is a mere $10 a month, but a convenient annual subscription is only $100 a year. This is a substantial discount to Microsoft's Office 365 business products ($150 / employee / year).
Such a deal! Are you not absolutely thrilled?
Here are some slightly more reasonable alternatives, all of which are compatible with their Office equivalents:
    LibreOffice (donation-supported)
NeoOffice ($10 but older version is free if you can find it)
    OpenOffice (completely free)

  • Grey startup screen and problems with disk utility

    hey all,
I recently started up my powerbook and it froze on the grey screen that you see right after startup. I also noticed that the hard drive wasn't making any noise like usual. I then booted from DVD to run disk utility. The disk utility can see the hard drive but it cannot verify or repair the disk or permissions since the options are blanked out. I have not installed any major updates or new software recently. It seems to have happened out of the blue. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thank you.

I don't have disk warrior and I am wondering if now might be a good time to get it.
DW is a great tool you will use again and again, if not for troubleshooting, for maintenance. In my experience, it is an excellent investment.
I still don't like it that your volume doesn't show up. I am assuming that you are using install disks for the OS you have installed. Am I right?
    Good luck.

  • Format, image format, partition in disk utility...

I'm hyper in my thoughts of what I wanna do and hypo in really doing them. So this question comes from someone who is know as a geek amongts his folks (and is) and has been using a computer since 10 years and OS X since 3 years now....
If one wants to have a clear picture of what a disk and disk image is all about... how will u put what "format", "image format" and "partiton" are and how they relate to each other.
My need to finally know disk utility more came from the fact that now I want to have a shared iphoto library, which according to a Apple support article, needs to be on a disk image for some permissions related issues. at the moment i have just put the entire library in the shared folder in Users and have set the premissions to let all user accounts in my system to access it. i still dont understand why that would not be apple's way.
anyway, i want to have a more clearer view about what lies inside disks and disks images. so if u could please answer my question above.
    thanks

Ok thanks for pointing out that i need to use NTFS instead of FAT.. And the order of partitions..
    I----------OSX----------I I------Windows----I I---Install---I
My only issue now.. ( atleast i think it is my only issue )
Im a noob at this, so please dont get mad.
But as i understand, you are using the information in this link
    http://discussions.apple.com/message/17365855#17365855
to bypass (Or Un-grey) the "create a usb" option.
Now my only issue is that there is no "create a usb" option, i have
"download the latest windows support software from apple"
    And
    "install Windows 7"
I stuck... ive tried remote disk, rEFIt, installing from usb, installing from dvd.
Dont know where else to go.
Once again, thanks for your help.

  • "Keys out of order" message in Disk Utility

    Hi,
I was just doing a regular maintenance check with Onyx and to my surprise it said I needed to repair the disk using the Installer DVD and Disk Utility.
I did this and again to my surprise I seem to have a problem.
After the whole processs is complete these messages come up:
"keys out of order" (in red)
1 HFS Volume repaired (in green)
1 Volume could not be repaired (in red)
I don't know what to do about this. On the one hand my system seems to be running fine, but on the other if these errors are coming up then surely there is an issue which I need to resolve.
Could someone enlighten me on what to do next?

    Hi,
Thanks. Unfortunately my battey died and now I am stuck on the apple logo at reboot. Opening disk utility via the install disk doesn't work as disk utils doesn't recognise any disks (even though I hear them spinning)
I am lucky in that I am able to access th powerbook's HD in target mode via firewire on my G5
so I am going to copy over a lot of my data and then invest in Diskwarrior.
However, I am a little confused with the Diskwarrior website. I would prefer to download as I am not near a shop to buy the software and I would rather not pay for express amazon delivery.
Would I be able to use the download of diskwarrior on my Powerbook?
    It seems a little confusing:
    "If You Are Purchasing DiskWarrior
Repairing your usual startup disk requires that you start up from another disk. In order to use the download copy of DiskWarrior, you will need to start up from another disk with Mac OS X 10.3.9 through 10.4.x installed. You will then need to run a copy of DiskWarrior from a disk that is not the disk you are repairing. (The DiskWarrior download does not include the Apple System files necessary to create a startup CD.) If you cannot use the download version of the software (i.e. you have only one internal hard drive and this is the drive you wish to repair), please order directly from our sales department or from one of our resellers to be sent the software on CD. If you order via the secure server, you will be sent a CD, but delivery of your CD will take approximately three to four weeks, depending on your location."
Basically I am in a hurry to get my Powerbook working by Thursday my two options are
a)Buy from Amazon and pay extra to get express delivery by wednesday
b)Buy download from Alsoft (with cd version on way in 2-3 weeks)....however if the download version is not sufficient then i'm screwed.
I'd really appreciate help here. It just happens that I have to work away on Thursday....and I therefore need my powerbook. I usually use my G5 in my home studio.
    THANKS!!

  • 'volume check failed', and disk utility can't fix it

I was planning to create a new bootable backup today and ran 'repair disk' from an install disk before cloning.
Unfortunately I grabbed a Panther disk by mistake, and only discovered it was the wrong disk as I took it out. By then, DU had run through the 'repair' - changing quite a few things - until it showed 'volume cannot be repaired'.
I've tried to correct them using DU from the Tiger install disk, but without any luck. DU shows:
    +Invalid catalogue record type+
    +Volume check failed+
+Error: the underlying task reported failure on exit+
+1 Volume could not be repaired because of an error+
My iBook still appears to be running perfectly, but obviously I need to repair the disk before I can clone it. Disk Utility can't do it - could DiskWarrior?
I'd really appreciate some advice on the options open to me, and the best way to do it.

    Success!
I powered down and ran DiskWarrior a 2nd time to rebuild the directory. This time I skipped the recommended Preview stage and went straight to confirming Rebuild. Everything now seems to be fine again. DU finds no faults with the disk, and the iBook feels significantly quicker and snappier.
Two things I learnt that might be helpful - the first is, it's easy to be careless for just a moment and end up in a time-consuming mess. It's the first time I've done it, and I won't be doing it again.
Second thing is, when people say DiskWarrior is slow to boot, they mean it - it took at least 10 minutes to show up on screen, which is unsettling. And the Preview stage, for me, was equally unnerving.
Still, it worked - superbly - all my data is intact, the iBook is overhauled and working faster than ever.

  • Grey folder with question mark and Disk Utility can't find HDD.

I have a 2010 MacBook Pro and for some reason the OS X does not boot up. Therefore I see the grey folder flashing. I tried booting into Recovery from holding options button but there are no available startup disks. So I installed Apple recovery on my USB and I boot up with that. I opened disk utility but it does not seem to find the hard disk. I also tried reinstalling Mac OS X and it gives me an error. Is there another bootable software except for Disk Utility that can check the HDD and see if there are any errors or is the HDD just dead?

Try the steps in this support article:

Have you tried installing the original Snow Leopard installation disk and access Disk Utility from the Utilities menu?
    Ciao.

  • Explain Image Format options in disk utility

I have a DVD full of jpeg files. I want to make an exact replica. I've read the explanation of how to do this in the Disk Utility help section. There are four options under the Image Format dropdown menu. Presumably  there are advantages and disadvantages to each of those options. Where do I find an explanation of those choices? What is my best choice for making an exact replica that can be read by any other DVD drive?

Finally stumbled across the explanation buried in DU Help:
    IMAGE FORMAT DESCRIPTION
    read/write
Choose this if you want to continue adding files to the disk image after it’s created.
    sparse bundle disk image
Choose this if you want to continue adding files to the image and want to conserve space. The disk image is just large enough to hold the files in it and expands to its maximum size as you add files to it. For example, if you create a 100MB sparse bundle disk image, its maximum size is 100MB.
    read-only
Choose this If you don’t need to add more files to the disk image.
    compressed
Choose this if you don’t need to add more files to the image and you want to conserve space. The data is compressed so the disk image is smaller than the original data.
    CD/DVD master
Choose this if you want to use the disk image with a third-party application. The disk image contains a copy of all sectors of the disk, whether they’re used or not, and copies them to other CDs or DVDs bit for bit.

  • Cannot format iPod using Disk Utility

My iPod (5th Generation) has been displaying a -48 error for weeks, and i tried to follow the advice to format my iPod using Disk Utility. However, after leaving my iBook 1.2Ghz G4 on over night with Disk Utility erasing it, the little bar was still stuck on partitioning, never moving. What can i do?

try reset in iTunes. Then follow the steps in Jason Creasey's excellent procedure in the long thread ref Code -48. Good luck.

  • Raided xserve raid boot volume, OK to run disk utility?

I have been asked to assist another site in our organization, and they have an older g5 xserve and xserve raid. They have the xserve booting off a raided boot volume on the xserve raid (2 drives in a raid 1 config)
They have started having some issues, so I thought I would check the obvious stuff first (i.e. disk util > repair drives)....Just wanted to check here first and make sure that I can SAFELY run disk util on a raided boot volume that is hosted on the xserve raid...
also, does anyone know if diskwarrior will also work in this config? (again, safety being an issue)
    Thanks in advance...

Yes, you can run Disk Utility to check the disk, or Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro and any other tool that checks the HD.
That is the point of RAID, it changes nothing of what an OS understands of a HD. If there are any problems and the drive/data is somehow 'lost' it is not due to RAID.
Safety would expect that you ahve a backup of this drive already, so running a disk check would only enhance and not reduce your safety by confirming reliability.

  • Printing w/out gray formatting box

I am new to Numbers, moving from Excel. For some reason when I print my sheet/table (only one page) whether from print view or not, the gray formatting box is visible (in preview) and is then printed. How do I get rid of it?

what do you mean by formatting box? Do you mean the grid lines? Remember that Numbers is true Wisywig. Meaning that what you see is what your going to get. So if you see grids when the table is not selected, your going to see them when it prints. You will want to select your grids and set them to none.
setting grid line settings can be a bit confusing. I use the inspector to do it. I select my cells, then I pick what lines I want to set, then pick the "None" setting. So its select the cell(s), then which border you want to set, then color and thickness.
    Hope this helps you.

  • Volumes not visible in disk utility

    Hi All
I'm running an X-RAID and just updated all the disks to 250GB in all fourteen slots. Then I made two new RAID 5 arrays, one on each side, using RAID Admin 1.5.1. All lights are green and the arrays seem fine, only they do not show up in disk utility or any other disk software like Disk Warrior. Nothing shows. I read somewhere that I might need to disable the LUN masking but the new RAID Admin won't let me do this as far as I can see.
    It's running OS 10.4.11 on a Mactel 2x2.66Ghz 8GB Ram

Did you upgrade the firmware to 1.5.1? If you didn't, then LUN masking is in place but RAID Admin will not let you turn it off. If you upgrade the firmware to 1.5.1 then there should be no LUN masking since 1.5.1 dropped support for it.
You can download and run RAID Admin 1.5. This version supports LUN masking and should allow you to turn it off.
If your firmware has been upgraded to 1.5.1 then something funky might be happening. You might want to downgrade the firmware to 1.5, then check LUN masking, and then upgrade back to 1.5.1 after it is turned off.

  • Formatting With The Disk Utility?

Hi! Is anyone having good success using Leopard's disk utility? I was trying to partition on the fly with little success (getting the message that it had to be OSX Extended journaled-which it was already) so I decided to erase using case sensitive journaled with no other options selected. It was a 120 gig drive and now after 4 1/2 hours I'm beginning to think it's doing a zero data option. Needless to say the disk utility's status bar isn't much help either. Tom

Hope this link helps. This should also apply to Leopard.

    Good Luck!

  • Nearly all Disk Utility options are greyed out. I just want to wipe dvd-RWs.

I have been searching for a few months for a solution, I finally decided to post my problem.
I have many rewritable disks that I would like to reuse. However, my disk utility is utterly worthless as nearly every option is greyed out. Only the "verify disk" option is available on any of the disks on the left column. All I want is to be able to erase my disks (or not even erase, just burn over them!), yet my disk utility does next to nothing.
I currently run 10.8.3 Mountain Lion, yet I had this problem at least since lion, and possibly snow leopard.
    Thanks all,
    Hazzard V

Can you post a screen shot of what you're seeing in Disk Utility?
I just tried it with a DVD-RW which shows no files, except that I know there are some on it.
