Greylisted in 10.4.8
I got this message in my mail.log
Recipient address rejected: Greylisted for 300 seconds
Does this mean i have a greylist system in my mailserver? i hav not installed postgrey or anything like that!??
If you haven't installed then it is the other way around. One of your users has sent an email to a mailserver that does greylisting.
Next time please post the relevant and unmodified log entries. My psychic powers only work during solar elipses

Can't keep greylisting disabled on Lion Server.
If I remove the greylisting settings from /etc/postfix/main.cf, If the mail server is restarted, the greylisting entry is recreated. Is there any way around this?
I know why greylisting works, and I know it does its job well. But it's incompatible with the way we work here. Many of our emails are time-sensitive and often from new people. I also find that a lot of auto-response type emails just plain don't get past greylisting (password resets and such).claytonfromgermantown hills wrote:
How do you manually replace the line.
We stated it above, but here's the run-down:
Edit: /etc/postfix/main.cf
Toward the bottom, change the line beginning with with smtpd_recipient_restrictions to be:
smtpd_recipient_restrictions="permit_sasl_authenticated permit_mynetworks reject_unauth_destination permit"
(essentially, you'll just remove the check_policy_service unix:private/policy entries from the line).
Save the file, then reload postfix:
$ sudo postfix reload -
Have a problem with greylisting in Mail server on Lion Server.
I've edited the main.cf file and removed greylisting, but it keeps reappearing, am I causing this or is it getting rebuilt and put back?
It's driving me mad to keep removing it.
Advise please.Main.cf or master.cf?
In the /etc/postfix/master.cf you should see:
# ====================================================================
# Greylist policy server
policy unix - n n - - spawn
user=nobody:mail argv=/usr/bin/perl /usr/libexec/postfix/greylist.pl
# ====================================================================
If you try commenting that out, as well as:
smtpd_recipient_restrictions = permit_sasl_authenticated permit_mynetworks reject_unauth_destination check_policy_service unix:private/policy permit
removing the "check_policy_service" from that line, what happens then?
(Make a backup of both files before tweaking, and be sure to do a "sudo postfix reload" after making changes) -
Botnet in 5505 ASA v9.2 - Manual entered Blacklist is only Greylisted
Any help is appreciated, I know not a lot of people are running the botnet but after using it on a trial basis I was hooked so I would like to know if this is a but or a setting where blacklisted traffic levels are defined.
I may have had this issue in other versions and not noticed it.
I have two issues, first is manually putting entries into my blacklist section for example:
dynamic-filter blacklist
name www.sprint.com
Are only being Greylisted so when I test I am still able to get to the webpage because I only block high to very high traffic.
Looking at the monitor it shows that the website was only Greylisted any my filter level was set to only block high and very high threats.
Documentation says manual entries in the blacklist are considered Very High but my system only categorizes them as Greylist.
My current workaround is to go under
Botnet traffic filter
Traffic Settings
and select the checkbox for "Treat ambiguous (greylisted) traffic as malicious (blacklisted) traffic
The problem is I may now get false positives.
My other question is can I set the ASA to display a page saying "Blocked by Botnet" or redirect traffic to my internal webserver so I can create that page? Merely blocking a page without definition can cause some frustration.
Can anyone else who has this take a peek to see if this is the same or did I jack one of my settings?
Here is some of my config

That is indeed a feature that we can consider. If you have a Cisco representative, I would strongly suggest you talk to him and request the feature. By now there is no redirect page or block page for botnet.
In regards to the other query. If the site appears to be good on our database, but you categorize is as black, the site would turn out to be grey, the way to drop this would be applying "grey is alway black" which is the option you have.

I have found what might be the way to fix. Anyone has any idea?
Inside the db-4.5.20/perl/BerkeleyDB/config.in file are these lines:
# 1. Where is the file db.h?
INCLUDE = /usr/local/BerkeleyDB/include
# 2. Where is libdb?
LIB = /usr/local/BerkeleyDB/lib
They look pretty good... except for the fact that the BDB make installed
everything under
/usr/local/BerkeleyDB.4.5
and no, it didn't bother with a symlink.
Once I'd made that link
/usr/local/BerkeleyDB -> /usr/local/BerkeleyDB.4.5
the build ran very quickly and without errors.
Cheers
BenIndeed, at this point if you don't know how to un-do what it is you have done,
quite honestly your best bet is to do a full wipe & reinstall, and if you are going to use
anyone's instructions (typically, tutorials), then make sure to fully read it from start to finish,
and not install things that are not meant to be installed.
If you know what you've done and why, with all due respect you should already be on your way to solving your conundrum(s), and not even needing to ask for any help here -
How do I disable Greylisting in OS X Server (10.8)?
How do I disable Greylisting in OS X Server?
Thanks!It looks like it is the same way I did it in OS X 10.7 Lion Server
sudo postconf -e 'smtpd_recipient_restrictions = permit_sasl_authenticated permit_mynetworks reject_unauth_destination permit'
sudo postfix reload
for a quick fix.
And follow the instructions here to make it permanent:
http://www.practiceofcode.com/post/15543512691/disable-greylisting-under-lion-se rver
Hope this helps -
I am trying to send mail from my .mac address using Mail (os x 10.4.11) and get the follwoing message from the [email protected] :
Sun, 26 Oct 2008 16:43:31 -0700 (PDT)
[email protected]: smtp;450 <[email protected]>: Recipient address rejected: Greylisted, see http://isg.ee.ethz.ch/tools/postgrey/help/mic.gov.mz.html
This seems to imply that either Apple or I is using a grey listing tool that won't permit sending to the intended address.
Is there any way I can get the intended recipient off the grey list? The link indicted in the message does not tell me anything I can understand....
thks

Make sure that:
1. Your e-mail address is only known to people in the government agencies.
2. You never use it for eCommerce external to the government.
3. The people you communicate with are protecting their machines against spammer viruses.

Whitelisting my backup MX host so it bypasses greylisting
I'n having a heck of a time getting Server.app from the command line to accept the addition of a range of IPs to bypass greylisting. They either don't add at all, or if I manually edit the host file, never seem to populate the database.
Has anyone else had experience on how to successfully do this?Hi there,
No, you're exactly right.
My copy of the O'Reilly publication: "Postfix: The Definitive Guide" arrived in the (real) mail today. Once again, this marvelous publisher has put out a book that exposes a complex technical subject to be really quite simple when it's explained by someone who can communicate effectively.
Someone dropped the book on my desk around 10AM. By 2PM I'd already double-checked my configuration and tested to make sure that backup transport for my domain was functioning correctly, while prohibiting an open relay situation. It was really handy to be able to check the configuration by Telneting into port 25.
Thanks to Kyle Dent for writing this excellent guide and demystifying an easy to use and well-designed program.

Hi qwerty,
Dun tink that creative customer support sucks cos I had been dealing with them in the past and I can say that their service are quite gd and fast. If you wanted a refund, I tink you need to contact the store that sells you the product. Dun tink creative will refund you though. -
Whitelisting in OS X Server (pass greylisting without disabling it)
To whitelist domains from greylisting so mails from that domain arrive instantly, enter
sudo serveradmin settings mail:postfix:add_whitelist_domain = "example.com"
and replace example.com with the domain you intend to whitelist. It seems like you can also whitelist hostnames (server.example.com) and mail users ([email protected]), but I don't know how to do that yet, using:
mail:postfix:add_whitelist_host = _empty_array
mail:postfix:whitelist_fromI am using Mac OS X 10.8.5 with Server 2.2.2, but I think the same will probably apply in Mavericks. I have in the past been trying these same commands but they were not always reliable in passing on the settings to the greylisting system. So, I found out where they write by analyzing /usr/libexec/postfix/greylist.pl and now maintain these by by hand. The unexpected thing is that this is not maintained in the Config directory tree but in the Data directory tree of Mail.
Go to the directory /Library/Server/Mail/Data/gldb
(gldb = greylisting database). Here, the greylisting script maintains the database of sending systems that have past the greylisting trick. Here I have added info to two files:
whitelist_domain
and
whitelist_host
These are static data files that are read by the greylisting script.
For instance, if you want to whitelist all servers from facebook.com (because their myriad of file servers defeats the greylisting assumptions) you add a line to whitelist_domain that says facebook.com and one that says facebookmail.com. The domains to add, you can find by analyzing mail.log and look for the greylisting 'error' messages.
Some obvious entries are:
amazon.com
facebook.com
facebookmail.com

Versa Mail "No Such User Here" and "Greylisting"
I'm new to the community. Usually when I try to reply to an email I get the response "No such user here" or I get a response saying the receiver is "Greylisted" and that I should try back in 300 seconds. What is going on? I couldn't find any info in the VersaMail guide.
Thanks.

So, I get that 10.6 implements greylisting. Unfortunately it's not working all that well for one of the folks sending to my mail server - ironically from mac.com. Since upgrading his mail always takes an hour to be delivered.
Is there any way I can specify either a specific address, or failing that, a domain to be whitelisted? In other words, how do I specify what should be exempt from greylisting?
I don't want to turn off greylisting - it's made a large improvement in the amount of spam we get.The greylist policy service is located here:
/usr/libexec/postfix/greylist.pl
It is almost a clone of the example postfix greylist policy example from here:
http://www.postfix.org/SMTPDPOLICYREADME.html
For what it is worth, the greylisting server never clears the database it uses to store which client addresses have tried to deliver mail to it, so once an address is whitelisted it should stay whitelisted forever. So delivery delays should go away with time as the full range of possible servers from places like mac.com and gmail get remembered.
If you're adventurous and know some perl, it should be straightforward to modify greylist.pl to check a whitelist file. -
how can I change the messages that are greylisted or the time?
It says
for: 60 seconds due to greylisting
but sometimes it takes 15-20 mins until I get the message. Or is it depending also on the other server, I have tested it with google mail.
and why does it always greylist the same adress shouldn't it learn the adresses that are once accepted that it is ok?
rgds janusing command line as sudo edit the main.cf at the line
smtpd_recipient_restrictions = permit_sasl_authenticated,permit_mynetworks,reject_unauth_destination,check_pol icy_service unix:private/policy permit
remove the check_policy_service unix:private/policy
once done you will thenhave to lock the file because if you restart or a pidgeon flies past the system puts it back in.
To lock a file enter #chflags nouchg main.cf -
Greylisting in 10.5 server?
In 10.4 Server, I have used the guide on the link below to install greylisting on 10.4 Server. Have not found any info on how to accomplish this in 10.5. Since niutil dont exist nowadays it must be done in some other way. Any ideas?

Milter-greylist and Messaging Server
I have been using the milter-greylist for a long time on the sendmail servers and relays, and at least with the older releases I thought this milter only supports local sockets to interact with sendmail (and can listen on the network for peering with other milter-greylist instances). I reviewed the recent release's README, there's no notes of non-local sockets either.
The Wiki [http://msg.wikidoc.info/index.php/About_milter_plugin] suggests, however, that all milters may (and for Messaging Server - must) be configured on a networking socket. It also states that milter-greylist was tested as working with the Sun Messaging Server.
Can somebody please elaborate (ideally - write up a step-by-step how-to on the Wiki) how to integrate this milter with Sun MS, which versions are supported, where do we configure the network-listening socket (is it greylist config or libmilter config), etc.?
Thanks in advance :)JimKlimov wrote:

I hit this very issue when writing up the guide you refer to -- there is little in the way of information on the Internet regarding the sendmail milter library and getting the milter to listen on a non-unix socket.
Can somebody please elaborate (ideally - write up a step-by-step how-to on the Wiki) how to integrate this milter with Sun MS, which versions are supported, where do we configure the network-listening socket (is it greylist config or libmilter config), etc.?For the milter-greylist I made the following change to the greylist.conf file:
replace:
socket "/var/milter-greylist/milter-greylist.sock"
with:
socket "inet:19025"This causes the milter to listen on an INET port (19025 in this example) vs. a unix socket. You will find that a similar approach will work with other milters that use the sendmail milter library and this is why I mentioned it in the guide:
<snip>
3. Run the milter-server, configure it to run on the INET:<TCP port number> socket.
</snip>
As for writing up wiki's on supported versions and what-not (we don't support specific milters rather we support the milter interface) this is something I simply don't have the time to do. Feel free however to update the milter wiki page with your own testing results.
I did however fix up a number of broken links on the page -- it seems sendmail have moved their milter related information to a new site (milter.org) since I created the page.
If you are looking at greylisting addresses, I would recommend you consider using the following instead as it is far more efficient then calling out to a milter server for this purpose.
