Grid Control and Data Guard Setup

Hi,
I have 4 PCs on which I wish to test the following:
1. OEM Grid Control 10.2 - Console + Service + Agent
2. Data Guard feature with Broker
3. Standby Setup for a Primary Database.
I will create the Primary DB on one Linux PC.
Standby DB using Grid Control & DataGuard on second Linux PC.
The Third PC is also Linux but the fourth PC is Windows XP.
Please guide me in understanding the following:
1. On which PCs should I install OEM Grid Control 10.2 - Console + Service + Agent?
2. On which PC should I setup DB Broker?
Please assume that I will use Oracle 10.2 Softwares and Linux x86 version.
Regards

well why don't you go ahead and test?!
Test and see whether you want to put oms, console all one machine, or whether you want to separate out the componests (you'll need an agent on each box regardless). I have no idea what the specs of your machines are, so why don't read the documentation on Grid and dataguard, see what the recommended settings are and then plan what you want to do.

  • Figures in Grid Control and Enterprise Manager Console don't match!

    Hi,
I have just installed Oracle 10g Grid Control and it is managing an existing database on another server. It appears to gather information as expected in most areas (I can look at the alert log through grid control and it is up to date to the nearest 60 seconds as I expect) but today I looked at how full my undo tablespace is and the figures seemed completely wrong. When looking through grid control it showed me that Undo was 20% full. When I looked in the old java console, it showed it was 30% full!
Is there any reason why figures in Grid Control would not be accurate or up to date? I have no error messages and it seems to be gathering data fine.
Is it more likely the old java console is not accurate? (I've always found it accurate in the past I think!).
These are Solaris Sparc servers, Oracle 10.2.0.3 Grid Control monitoring an Oracle 10.2.0.3 database on a remote server via management agent.
    Thanks,
    Paula

And this morning my old console says 21%, and the new Grid Control says 14%. So they both seem to be gathering the info and putting it out but they have completely different opinions on how much space is used. I think that makes the whole thing fairly useless. Not so glad I spent an age trying to get grid control set up now!!!
    Any thoughts much appreciated!!!!
    Thanks,
    Paula

  • Sql Developer and Data Guard enabled instance

I have version 1.1.2.25 SQL Developer and when I try to connect to Oracle 10gR2 instance which is data guard enabled and its logical standby it spits few message, and then connects, but data is not visible from any table.
Is there any way to see data and other code while in logical standby instance which only in read only mode?
    Thanks.

This problem came when I tried to connect to Oracle
instance which is a logical standby in data guard
setup. Eventually connection is made and then you can
    not see any object.
In logical standby database its suppose to be read
only and should be available for query.
In TOAD you can see every thing and when you want to
make any change ,it spits an error and wouldn't allow
    you to make any change.
My question was, why SQL Developer is not showing the
objects in the list and its contains.Perhaps we could help you if you told us what the error was.

  • Data Guard setup with Clustered primary ?

    Hi,
I am sure I am not in this unique requirement of setting up a Data Guard configuration where my primary database is clustered (for local server failure) and I am setting up the Data Guard (for the site level failure).
I could do the Data Guard setup without any problem where my primary and standby are on single individual servers (not clustered) but when I do the set up with primary database as clustered and do a local failover (not using Data Guard but using the veritas cluster) the DB Broker just stops recognizing the configuration.
I did come across a metalink note (BUG 4404952 ) which says DG Broker does not support Cold Failover Cluster.
Has anyone found any work around to it?
Has anyone tried using the above configuration in 10.2.0.4? Does it work in 10.2.0.4?
The Bug is dated 2007 so I am sure I am not the first one to encounter this issue.
Would really appreciate if someone can tell me what the workaround would be or guide me to any good link which would tell me the same.
    Thanks a lot in anticipation.
    Manoj Datar

I read somewhere that cold failover support in 11g is also ONLY for the oracle clusterware configuration.
Its really so hard to believe that there is NO ONE who wants to have a clustered primary (for local server failures) and a Data Guard (for the Site level failure or DR) as a combination in their HA environment.
I am still in the testing phase, What else could I be looking for in the solution if I need to achieve both these objectives (ie Local Server failures and Site level failures or DR)? I already have the Local server failure taken care by using the Veritas cluster so what do I need to include in the mix to achieve the site level failure?

  • Oracle11gR2 data guard setup

I am looking for a document on "Active data guard configuration and setup".
In past I have used the following doc.....
    http://wiki.oracle.com/page/11GR2+Data+Guard+Setup+project
But now the web link isn't available anymore (The link automatically redirects to www.oracle.com). The document was basically a workshop on how to setup Oracle 11gR2 active data guard with fast-failover option. It was an excellent document and very informative. Any idea where I can find it?
If anyone could point me to the document or atleast let me know who the author is....that will be extremly helpful.
    Thanks,
    Sourav

Thanks for the reply! But no, that's not the one I was looking for.
The old URL "http://wiki.oracle.com/page/11GR2+Data+Guard+Setup+project" had step by step very detail directions on data guard setup starting from physical standby creation from scratch. Nor typical OBE style....... just step by step instructions. It was indeed a very popular document/workshop.
Since this web link was active just 2 months back, I was wondering if there would be an archived location or someone would be able to help me locate the doc. It's hard to believe that these very helpful docs are deleted overnight.
    Thanks,
    Sourav

  • Comparision between Multimaster replication and data guard

    Hi,
I have some questions regarding Multimaster Replication and Data Guard. Like
*1.)* I have a web site having database in oracle 10.2.0 and multimaster replication configured on it. But whenever i need to change the structure of the tables i
need to stop replication. So my web site is unavailable but my first priority is availability. So will it be useful for me to configure data guard.
*2.)* I have configured data guard for testing . My Database is Named as Gard and physical standby database is like stan.
    it is working fine.
suppose my main database server get corrupted i have no option to start main database server. Now i left with only standby server how i can start standby server
    as database main server.
*3.)* Is there any if main database stop working Standby database start working as main without dba intervention.
    Thanks
    Umesh
Edited by: Umesh Sharma on Jan 14, 2009 4:17 AM

    Hi Umesh,
first of all you should be aware that Dataguard and Replication are two completely different things.
While the database where you replicate to is always up and open in read write mode, a physical standby can either be recovering or open in read only mode.
1.) I think from what you are telling you probably should consider using dataguard with a logical standby database, but be aware that there will be some limitations regarding datatypes.
2.) you can do a failover or a switchover, depending on your database version switchback may not be possible
3.) have a look at dataguard broker, you can use it to automate the failover

  • Oracle 10.2.0.3 Grid Control and ReNew the IP Address

    Hello
I have installed Grid Control and added few hosts and was working fine. But I have changed the IP address of Grid Server host. I mean I have been given new IP address for Grid Control host.
I have changes the ip address in /etc/hosts and reboot the server. But Grid Control Console page is not coming up on IE. Help Please...
    Regards
    Sindhi

It has been sorted out. As Grid Control use FQDN and it do not use IP address. Just I changes the IP address and FQDN was same. I was forgot to change IP address from Terminal Server where I was accessing Grid Control Console using IE. Thanks for you both to response my query.

  • Flashback Database on Data Guard setup

    Hello!
    Win 2003 server - 64 bit
    Oracle 10.2.0.4
As i have noticed Flashback Database is popular in Data Guard setups for the reinstate reason; you dont need to rebuild.
    However, im looking at Flashback for 'flashback database' reasons. Some developers has asked for a method to rollback if an release has gone bad, so my questions is;
If i flashback database primary database, will standby also change due to redo log shipment?
    Thank u!

After flashing primary database check CURRENT_SCN in Standby. If flashback scn is greater then current_scn, then do nothing. Otherwise, on standby:
    ALTER DATABASE RECOVER MANAGED STANDBY DATABASE CANCEL;
    FLASHBACK STANDBY DATABASE TO SCN "flashback_scn_number -1";
    ALTER DATABASE RECOVER MANAGED STANDBY DATABASE DISCONNECT FROM SESSION;

  • Install Grid Control and use repository within a DataGuard configuration

    Hello,
I need some information if anyone has experience in the following
We have severel database running in DataGuard standby configuration.
I want to install OMS 11.1 and use the repository in a primary and standby configuration.
My configuration will look like this:
    host 1     Primary Repository database
         OMS service 1
    host 2     Standby Repository database
         OMS service 2
During normal operation i want to have 2 OMS services running.
Whenever a failover is necessary, i want to active my standby database and run OMS service 2.
Can this be a working configuration?
    Any help is appreciated.

    Hi.
As far as I know, the dbconsole installed with the Oracle database applies for only one database on one server. The information accessed by the dbconsole relies within the sysman schema inside the actual database. For a database environment with 10 databases, it is possible to install grid control and manage all these databases despite version and OS. And I think that grid is a good solution to such an environment.
The grid installation itself is a application server installation, and I suggest if possible that you separate the rdbms server and the server that contains the grid control.
The repository database the grid control uses can either be installed in the 10g environment or in the grid control environment (server). You can place the repository in a new database in a separate ORACLE_HOME from the actual grid control application server.
    Good luck.

  • Installing Grid Control and not using ASM

Is it possible to install Grid Control and not be using ASM? We are on the brink of beginning our install (Peoplesoft) and may not use ASM. It seems to me from documentation that I'm reviewing that installing GC assumes you will be using ASM.
    Any info would be appreciated.

    Hi,
the Grid Control Repository database does not require ASM. It works perfectly fine with datafiles on a normal filesystem.

  • Grid Control and CEP

    Hi,
We are building for one of our clients a solution that is comprized from several products. One of them is CEP. For all theother products we can use Grid Control to "watch" the status and "health" of the products but we could not find any reference to CEP.
We know that we can get the statistics on the EPNs using Visualizer or JMX but we prefer to have it all in one place. Is it possible to use Grid Control?
Is there any information regarding Grid Control and CEP?
    Thanks,
    Shimon

    Hello,
There is currently no support for CEP in Grid Control.

  • GRID Control and management  hostname

With a HA deployment you have to set :
    emd.properties:#AgentListenOnAllNICs=FALSE
This is ok for me but the servers have 3 differents IP adresses (3 differents hostname), one is foucuss for management tasks and this is not the name registered by the Agent.
Do you know if it is possible to run host scripts (external jobs) with Grid Control and to specify the hostname where these jobs have to run by default the jobs will run on the hostname registered by the Agent.

    Hello,
There is currently no support for CEP in Grid Control.

  • When to install Grid Control and when to just use 10g built in?

    1. is Grid Control really the only way to Enterprise Manage multiple databases? (if not, how do i switch from different databases on the 10g built in EM)
    2. I only have about 10 databases, is Grid Control overboard?
