Grid Control architecture.

Can I have 64 bits primary and 32 bits standby logical server controlled by 32 bits Grid Control.
Primary server (64 bits) + Standby server (logical) 32 bits + Grid Control (32 bits)

Oliver,
Thanks for the comments. The article is based on practical experience. If one was to recommend a pool of 2 management servers for a large corporate with 1000 servers, what that would mean is that if 1 server was brought down for any maintenance reason (for eg. applying an EM patch), all the EM work load would be on the remaining management server. So it is better to have 3 management servers instead of 2 when the EM system is servicing so many targets. Otherwise, the DBAs would be a tad angry since only 1 remaining managment server would not be able to service them properly during the time of the maintainance fix on the first management server.
The article ends with these words: "You can easily manage hundreds or even *thousands* of targets with such an architecture. The large corporate which had deployed this project scaled easily up to managing 600 to 700 targets with a pool of just three management servers, and the future plan is to manage *2,000 or more* targets which is quite achievable." The 2000 or more is based on the same architecture of 3 managment servers.
So as per the best practice document, 2 management servers would be fine for 1000 servers, although I would still advise 3 servers in practice.
For your case of 200 servers, it depends on the level of monitoring you are planning to do, and the type of database managment activities that
will be done by the DBAs. For eg, if the Dbas are planning on creating standby databases now and then through Grid Control, running backups daily
via Grid Control, cloning databases in Grid Control, patching databases in Grid Control and so on, I would definitely advise a pool of 2 servers
in your case. 2 is always better than 1.

Porus.

  • Grid Control cannot determine primary host architecture

    Dear all
i try to create new standby database for my oracle rac database (2 node) in grid control 10.2.0.2 but after first step of wizard i get this error without any oraerr number : "cannot determine primary host architecture" , but i have all database target items correct ,up and running include ( ASM,Listener,Cluster,Host,Agent,Database instance)
please help me how i can resolve this error
    Oracle RAC version :10.2.0.1 (windows 2003 R2 X64)
Oracle Grid Control Agent ( 10.2.0.2 ) for windows X64
    Oracle Grid Control 10.2.0.1 windows 2003 R2 32bit

    Hi all,
I'm trying to create a stand by database with the same tools as described above. My configuration is the same.
I've checked in my database and I already got the value 'Intel Pentium' described in the query. I tried the query anyway but, as I was expecting, it didn't solve anything for me.
If somebody could explain a bit on what actually generate this error and what OMS is looking for in MGMT_TARGET_PROPERTIES, it would be great.
If I find anything I'll update this post.

  • Need architecture/config details for GRID Control

    Hi All,
I have scoured the Oracle documentation, but I am still interested in the details of the architecture and configuration of OEM Grid Control. I have installed version 10.2.. I want to know more about the various components, how they interact, how information flows in the configuration, how discovery and data collection works etc...
Can you point me to some resources, or maybe a person I can do on offline email conversation with???

Did you take a look at the Grid Control documentation? The links are under http://www.oracle.com/pls/db102/portal.portal_db?selected=21 and the doco for the different platforms are there.

  • Listener & grid control after upgrade to 11.1.0.7

going from 10.2.0.2 to 11.1.0.7 on aix 5.3
On our test server we have about 8 databases that are all currently using the 10.2 listener. I've upgraded one of our very basic test databases to 11g this morning, and for the time being just created a new listener11g that listens to different port. when I start it, the log file is being created in ORACLE_BASE/diag/tnslsnr/<server>/<lsnrname>/alert/ instead of the default ORACLE_HOME/network/logs I didn't tell it to create the listener log there, anyone else have this issue?
Also, my databases are all currently being monitored by OEM Grid Control and NOT DB Control. What steps should I take to get that running correctly again after the upgrade? Delete the target database and add it back after the upgrade? Sorry ahead of time if there is a meta-link doc for this, I've searched briefly and came up empty handed.
    Thanks,
    Ben Alvey

well, from what I read about the ADR architecture it wasn't clear that the listener log would move. the metalink documents for the listener log still state that the default log directory is ORACLE_HOME/network/log as well.
And seeing how I supplied a different value for diagnostic_dest during the upgrade of said database it didn't make much sense to me how it came to the decision to stick it where it did. I'd say it is using the value from $ORACLE_BASE during the install.
It would be helpful if their docs didn't contradict themselves constantly.

  • 1st attempt to install GRID CONTROL

I am on an HP-UX ITANIUM box and have been told by Oracle to install the general HP-UX Grid Control installation. After reviewing the documentation and from my last class I learn that ORACLE MANAGEMENT SERVICE must first be installed. I have waded through the listed downloads to the following pages:
    www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/oem/index.html
    and
    www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/oem/htdocs/hpsoft.html
both pointing to OEM 10g Grid Control r2 for HP-UX with a README attached.
I have downloaded the 6 HPUNIX_Grid_Control_full* zip files and went to read the indicated README hoping to see installation instructions or at the least WHERE on the HP to place these files - README goes to an ORACLE NOT FOUND page.
Can anyone assist me in obtaining the installation instructions?

    Thank you
Ravi Rangas (Oracle Business Development Consultant) assured me that the Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g Grid Control Release 2 (10.2.0.1) for HP-UX (six HPUNIX zip files) found at www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/oem/htdocs/hpsoft.html were the downloads to use for HP-UX ITANIUM.
I executed the installer and when it reached the point "Linking "oracle Net Required Support Files 10.1.0.2.0" errors began to generate from the make files (example: warning: the file no.o is from an incompatible architecture). This tells me that the install set I was assured would work on ITANIUM in fact will not.
Do you have a recommendation on the correct HP-UX ITANIUM installs?

  • Oracle 10.2 Grid Control – Adding Database residing on different hosts

I used to work with Oracle 9.2 Enterprise Manager. Now I have installed Oracle 10.2.0.2 Grid Control on Windows 2000. I want to do database administrator from Oracle Grid Control for Oracle 9i, Oracle 10.1 and 10.2 databases. I do not want to install any agents on my database servers because they are production servers,
All of I am interested in to have nice user interface of Oracle 10g grid control, so I can do database administration such as adding a database file, looking at database users, sessions etc. I was able to do all of that with Oracle9i enterprise manager. IN Oracle9i EM, one can manually add a database instance if it cannot be discovered using an agent. Is it possible to do that in Oracle 10g grid control?
When I start Grid Control, go to targets tab and then database tab and want to add a database, it asks for host name. When I enter hostname (which is accessible from the network), it says host not found. Is an agent required on the host before Grid Control can recognize it. In Oracle 9i enterprise manager, there was an option to manually add a database (i.e. automatic discovery was not successful), is it possible to do that with Oracle 10g grid control.

Over the years, working with Oracle, I've found tremendous value in reading the docs. You might find similar value doing that too.
The only issue you seem to have is an unwillingness to learn the architecture and concepts behind the product you are trying to install. You get rid of the error by deleting the entry and doing it correctly.
There is no way to drop a brick on your foot and not have it hurt. <g>

  • Problem Load Balancing connections for Grid Control Console on port 80!

I have two OMS and I'm balancing connections for Grid Control Console using a Software Load Balancer according with "Oracle Enterprise Manager Advanced Configuration". I have success where the load balancer is listening on port different to 80. When I configure Load Balancer to listen on port 80(architecture requirement) and distribute load between the two OMS(Port 7779), when login to Enterprise Manager Console the URL on the web browser changes to the port configured for HTTP server (port 7780) wich produces an "unable to connect" error message; and this behaviour also happends in some of the internal links of Grid Control Console too. Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance!

I've been asked to install Grid Control on a RHEL4
box with a 64bit architecture. Is this at all
possible as I've not found any documentation or forum
threads to support this?I was just in class last week for Grid Control at Oracle HQ (Belmont, CA). We had 6 Customers and 9 Oracle employees. There was someone there from the Oracle on Demand site that was very good.
    Three things I can say:
    1) Apply the 10.2.0.2 patchset and follow the instructions exactly as the doc says. This was very helpful and has been recently posted on OTN.
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/obe10gemgc_10202/patching/patching.htm
    2) Do attempt to upgrade the DB from 10.1.0.4.0 to 10.2.0.2.0. After sometime the database will become corrupted.
    3) Everything, but the OMS is supported on 64-bit RHEL 4. Even though the 32-bit binaries are there, it might work, but you more than likely will struggle to get it to work.
There was an Acct. Rep there from the eastern office and he said that the 64-bit version of EM(GRID) will be coming out in 11g (~12-18months) and will not be backported.
We have our install on 32-bit RHEL 4 on 64-bit hardware. Not a popular choice, but it will give you an upgrade path in a couple of years.

  • How to install OEM Grid Control R2 on RHEL AS4 (AMD64/EM64T)

    Hi all,
I was able to install the Oracle Application Server (Infrastructure and BI and Forms) successfully on the another machine with the same specs. The application I installed on the 64-bit machine is a 32-bit Oracle Application Server.
Now, I tried to install the OEM Grid Control R2 (another 32-bit Oracle Software) on an identical 64-bit machine but had no luck. Ran linux32 bash before trying the install.
I always get the error "error in invoking target 'dm_on ioracle' of makefile 'OH/db10g/rdbms/lib/ins_rdbms.mk".
Please help me/guide me in this install if it is at all possible.
    Thanks and regards,

Did you read the installation docs?
Did you look up trying to do this on metalink before proceeding?

  • Weblogic 10.3.2 Smart Update / Grid Control 11.1.1

I'm implementing a new Grid 11.1 environment on a linux x86_64 platform. I've installed everything including weblogic 10.3.2 with the default options. (required for grid control installation). The problem is.... now I have to patch the 10.3.2 weblogic server.. BUT it doesn't have the smart update utility installed... in other words .. there isn't any BEA_HOME/utils directory. Much less a bsu.sh script to launch the patching process.
Has anyone ran into this before? I am new to weblogic and have never used the product. Thanks

Somehow the installation got split. Part when in the /u01 and the other went in the home path of the user. never had that to happen before. I ended up uninstalling and reinstalling to correct the issue. Thanks

  • Oracle 10g Grid Control Installation On RedHat Advanced Server 3.0

I am planing to install Enterprise Manager 10g Grid Control Release 1 (v10.1.0.3)
on RedHat Advanced Server 3.0. The agent I am trying to download is showing version 10.1.0.4.1. I am not sure iof this agent is going to work with (v10.1.0.3). Pl. let me know if someone has performed this installation. Do I need to apply any patch on OEM and agent.
    Thanks
    Raj

Actually, entirely the other way around, unless you like seeing errors in your OMS.
OMS must be at at least the same patch level as the communicating agents.
    10.1.0.3 agent against a 10.1.0.4 OMS = OK
    10.1.0.4 agent against a 10.1.0.3 OMS = Bad mojo
Download the 10.1.0.4.1 patchset from Metalink and update your OMS, or stick with the 10.1.0.3 agent if you've no access to metalink.
