Grid infrastructure software-only mode
Hi all,
What are the differences between those different installation mode for the Grid infrastructure ?
Install and configure grid for a cluster.
Install and configure grid infrastructure for standalone software
Install grid infrastructure software only.
Thanks

Creating ASM after installing grid infrastructure software only option
OS environment is Solaris 10 sparc (64 bit) with suncluster 3.2. Oracle version is 11.2.0.3.0... ASM configuration also..
Grid binaries (i.e. GRID_HOME) will be placed in local disk on both the nodes. Oracle Binaries (ORACLE_HOME) also will be placed in local disk on both the nodes..Oracle database only will be placed in shared storage with ASM...
My doubt is If i select "install grid infrastructure software only" option, can i create separate ASM instance on each node by using "$GRID_HOME/dbs/initSID.ora" file of each node?
Is it possible to create two ASM instance in the clustered environment since Single instance Oracle ASM is not supported with Oracle 11g release 2 as per "Oracle® Solaris Cluster Data Service for Oracle Guide"?
Please tell me the suggestion if anyone knows........
Thanks & Regards
Ramesh MHi,
First of all "software only installation" only places the binaries onto the local disks. This software only binaries later have to be configured either for GI Standalone Server or GI for Cluster environment. It differs in the root.sh script to be called, and in the need to use config.sh to configure the cluster environment.
So by configuring standalone server GI later, you will only have a local ASM installation.
However you will not end up with a initSID.ora file for the ASM instance, since the spfile of the ASM instance will always be placed inside the first ASM diskgroup to be configured. (the same for GI cluster, as for GI SI).
Now creating clustered ASM and SI ASM => you can only create clustered ASM for nodes which participate in the same cluster. So if you configured both nodes with clustered GI, but did not tell them to be 1 cluster, but 2, then both ASM instances will be separate. Resulting in beeing ASM1 instance on both nodes, and not able to mount the same diskgroup (consistent of the same disks) on both servers at the same time. So in the end having 2 clusteres consisting of one node each, does not really differ much from the ASM point of view, other than having ASM1 as instance name instead of +ASM (in GI SI). The difference is in the cluster stack below ASM, which simply has more processes and requirement for the clustered GI version.
And last but not least, yes you can have separate ASM instances on 2 separate nodes. If they are not part of the same cluster, the ASM instances are independent.
They are not really single instances, since they know that they are RAC ASMs, however they do not communicate with other nodes. However you may only have one ASM instance on each host (either physical or virtual host, as you can have an ASM instance in each solaris container).
Hope that clarifies it.

System re-booted while installing grid infrastructure software(11 gr2)
Good day,
While installing grid infrastructure software(11 gr2) for two node cluster on Redhat 5.4, the system re-booted i.e.node 1
just after the completion of running root.sh file on node 2.
My question is how to resume installation again.
Thanks

Hi,
Check if $GRID_HOME/cfgtoollogs/configToolAllCommands exist, if the file is there then as grid user execute the script
but to be safe and have clean installation I would deinstall it and re-run the installation

How reInstall Gride Infrastructure and Use old ASM disk groups
<pre>Hello to all
I installed Grig Infrastructure 11gR2 on a standalone server (OS is Linux)
and I configured ASM and my database created on ASM
Conceive that my OS disk corrupted and OS doesn't start and the Gride Home is on that disk,
and I have to install OS again
My ASM disks are safe , Now how can I install Grig Infrastructure again somehow that it can use previous ASM disks
and disk groups and I don't oblige to create my database again ?
In the step 2 of installing Gride Infrastructure it has four options
<pre>
1.Install and configure Oracle Grid Infrastructure for a Cluster
2.Configure Oracle Grid Infrastructure for a Standalone Server
3.Upgrade Oracle Gride Infrastructure or Oracle Automatice Storage Management
4.Install Oracle Gride Infrastructure Software Only
</pre>
If I select the option 2 it wants to create a disk group again
I guess that I need to select option 4 and then do some configuration but I don't know what I must configure
Do you know answer of my question , if yes please explain it's stages
Thank you so much
</pre>Hi,
no you are not obliged to recreate your database again. However there is a small flaw in the installation procedure, which does not make it 100% easy...
When you installed the Oracle Restart (Standalone GI), your ASM diskgroup will contain the SPFILE of the ASM instance. And this is exactly the small flaw you will be encountering. So you have 2 options for "recovery":
1.) Do a software only install (4), and run roothas.pl. This however will not create any ASM entries. You would have to add it manually (using srvctl) and you can specify the ASM Spfile with the srvctl command. Problem here is however to have to know where your ASM spfile has been. If you have a backup of your OLR and a backup of the GPNP profile, this might be easier to find out.
2.) Do a new installation (2) and configure a new diskgroup (with a "spare" disk or small lun and a new name), that Oracle restart creates ASM instance and the new ASMSpfile for you.
Then you can simply mount the diskgroup containing your database additionally. You then shoudl however move your new ASMSpfile to the new diskgroup (or simply exchange it with the existing one). In this case it is easier to find out where it was - however you will need a spare (though small) LUN for the new spfile (temporarily, until you exchange it).
In either case after you have your ASM instance back (and access to your old diskgroup), you have to reregister your database and services - if you do not have an OLR backup.
Again => It is doable and you can simply mount the ASM diskgroup containing your database. However I suggest you try this one time to know what really needs to be done in this case.

ASMCA needs Oracle Grid Infrastructure to configure ASM
Hi,
I am trying to install ASM 11gR2 on RHEL5. I am using VMWare Workstation for this.
I have already installed Oracle database software and Grid Infrastructure on this machine. While installing Grid Infrastructure, I chose install Grid Infrastructure software only.
Once this was successfull I am trying to create ASM instance using asmca.
Regarding the disks, I am using raw devices. I created a virtual disk which I have partitioned but haven't formatted it. Done this to create raw device
[root@localhost sysconfig]# /bin/raw /dev/raw/raw1 /dev/sdb
/dev/raw/raw1: bound to major 8, minor 16
and have added
ACTION=="add",KERNEL=="sdb",RUN+="/bin/raw /dev/raw/raw1 %N"
to /etc/udev/rules.d/60-raw.rules
Then I tried creating the disk but it failed. So I did the following steps to fix it
[root@dhcppc2 Softwares]# /etc/init.d/oracleasm createdisk VOL1 /dev/sdb
Marking disk "VOL1" as an ASM disk: [FAILED]
[oracle@oracle11gR2 grid]$ tail -f /var/log/oracleasm
Device "/dev/sdb" is not a partition
To fix this
[root@localhost ~]# /usr/sbin/asmtool -C -l /dev/oracleasm -n VOL1 -s /dev/sdb -a force=yes
asmtool: Device "/dev/sdb" is not a partition
asmtool: Continuing anyway
Now I am able to view the asmdisk through listdisks option.
Have set following environment variables before running asmca
[oracle@oracle11gR2 ~]$ export ORACLE_HOME=/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/Grid
[oracle@oracle11gR2 ~]$ export PATH=/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/Grid/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/kerberos/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/home/oracle/bin
When I am running ASMCA I am facing this error - Oralce Grid Infrastrcture is not configured properly. ASMCA needs Oracle Grid Infrastructure to configure ASM
Any thoughts?Hi Aman,
Thanks for the reply.
Is it possible to configure 11gR2 ASM on single instance databases ? I have done the config with 10g but I am struggling with the Grid Infrastructure. For eg: when I do deinstall of Grid Infrstructure

ASMCA needs Oracle Grid Infrastructure to configure ASM - 11gR2 on SLES11
Hi,
I'm trying to install 11gR2 with ASM on a new SLES11 Server. So far i successfully installed the Database Software but struggle now when it comes to installing the Grid Infrastructure.
Partitioning and stamping the disks as ASM disks worked fine, oracleasm listdisks would give me my disknames as output.
So far so good - in the grid infrastructure installer i chose "install and configure grid infrastructure for a standalone server"
The setup was working, i executed the root.sh script without any issues - but configuring ASMCA failed with the following error:
INFO: Read: Error while detecting Oracle Grid Infrastructure. ASMCA needs Oracle Grid Infrastructure to configure ASM.
Unfortunately i couldn't find a lot about it on the internet - i'm very stuck here..
Any ideas?
Andreai used raw devices in my first attempt - but read that it's not supported anymore - so i configured them as asm disks using the oracleasm tool.
which worked.. so the disks can not be the problem
i already read amans solution before posting here - but the problem in that thread was different - the guy installed the grid infrastructure software only and then tried to manually configure it, which failed.
His solution was to delete his previous install and choose '+Install and Configure Grid Infrastructure for a standalone server+' in the installer.
I already started my installation with Install and Configure Grid Infrastructure for a standalone server ... so that's no solution either :( -
Grid Infrastructure installable for Oracle Restart only (No ASM)?
Hello,
Can Oracle Grid Infrastructure be installed for its Oracle Restart functionality only? i.e., No ASM,; this box uses local RAID 5 filesystems only.
This is a standalone 32-bit RHEL 5 system with Oracle Database 10gR2 already installed that I intend to upgrade to 11gR2. Just experimenting with installing Grid Infrastructure for only its restart capability. There isn't anything out there I've found that addresses this other than the Oracle doc stating that the Infrastructure must be installed if I want to use ASM or Oracle Restart.
I'm currently in the installer in a Software Only installation waiting for my SysAdmin to run the root.sh script, but in looking at this script, it looks like it might try to do things with CRS, voting files and the like, which do not exist.
Thank you!
-JonHi Erik,
Can Oracle Grid Infrastructure be installed for its Oracle Restart functionality only? Yes ... you can do that installing Software Only
I'm currently in the installer in a Software Only installation waiting for my SysAdmin to run the root.sh script, but in looking at this script, it looks like it might try to do things with CRS, voting files and the like, which do not exist.Don't worry about that ... at the end of the execution of the root.sh script will report a proceedings to configure only Oracle Restart.
Only this resource "ora.evmd" will appear online.

Where is 11.2.0.2 software for Grid Infrastructure
Hi All,
I attempted to upgrade Oracle database s/w from 11.2.0.1 to 11.2.0.2 . However I got an error stating that my Grid infrastructure software was at 11.2.0.1 and needed to be upgraded to 11.2.0.2
Can anyone tell me where I can find this software, it is not delivered in the 11.2.0.2 patchset and I could not find it in My Oracle Support as there is no obvious link to its location ?
Running on 64 bit RedHat
Any help much appreciated
Thanks
SteveThanks Srini,
Ive just logged onto MOS and find that MOS 1223673.1 points me to the patchset that I have already downloaded - 11.2.0.2. So that means Grid software is actually bundled in the same patchset as oracle db software
It gives details of the grid software being installed in zip file 3 of 7 , so I compared file sizes and see that I hadnt fully downloaded this file correctly
Problem solved
Thanks very much for your assistance

Configure Oracle Grid Infrastructure for a standalone server
As I understand and as the following doc indicated, to install Oracle database, I'd have to install Grid Infrastructure first. I am not configuring RAC/cluster, only on a standalone server.
I executed runinstaller, and choose " install the software only", then after I selected "configure oralce grid infrastructure for a standalone server", I am getting the following error:
[INS-40410] The installer has detected a configured instance of Oracle Grid Infrastructure software on the system
Please advice how this instance have been configured, and how to remove it before I can proceed?

Oracle Grid Infrastructure Query !!
Hi
I have a requirement to install Oracle Grid Infrastructure software on SUN SPARC v11. I would like to know, Whether the Oracle Database 11g Release 2 Grid Infrastructure (11.2.0.1.0) for Solaris Operating System (x86-64) ) is compatible with Oracle 11.2.0.4 Database version ?
From where can I download the link for the same ?

ChanI would like to know, Whether the Oracle Database 11g Release 2 Grid Infrastructure (11.2.0.1.0) for Solaris Operating System (x86-64) ) is compatible with Oracle 11.2.0.4 Database version ?
No, it is not compatible. You cannot have database version that is higher than the GI version. If you want to run an Oracle 11.2.0.4 database, then GI needs to be *at least* 11.2.0.4 as well. It can be 12.1 if needed/desired.
From where can I download the link for the same ?
From My Oracle Support, you can download the 11.2.0.4 version of both the database and GI software. This link shows you how to obtain the patchset.
Obtain Database Patchsets » Peasland Database Blog
Files 1of7 and 2of7 are the 11.2.0.4 version of the database. File 3of7 is the 11.2.0.4 version of GI.

Hi,
I have removed a successfully installed Grid Infrastructure Software. Now I was again installing it but the Installer is complaining about "[INS-40912] Virtual host name assigned to another system on the network", which it was not complaining about in the first installation process. :/
EDIT: I have checked and the two cluster-nodes are interpingable through their virtual IP's.
I see that the previous installation has created an own interface for that virtual IP:

Hi,
Try use kfod utility:
Note: Keep in mind that the Grid Infrastructure software does not need to be installed to use kfod, since kfod is located as well on the staging area where you uncompressed the Grid Infrastructure software, as the following example:
/stage/grid/stage/ext/bin/kfod
Where: "/stage" is the directory where I uncompressed the source software for the Grid Infrastructure software.
And put here :
$ kfod asm_diskstring='/dev/usasdirvg801_asm*' disks=all -

The Mercury Playback Engine Software Only is greyed out. Does this mean it is working or not?
your question:
"The Mercury Playback Engine Software Only is greyed out. Does this mean it is working or not?"
yes... it is 'greyed out' because it is your only option,
and premiere is working in "software only" mode by default !!!
if you follow the suggestion made in this thread:
https://forums.adobe.com/message/7321155#7321155
...you might be able to select MPE, and as a result the menu will NOT
be 'greyed out', indicating that you can choose between the default of
'software only' or the alternate 'mercury playback engine'

Please help.before installation have u configure the private interconnect on both the nodes to same network adapter..
for example on node 1 if the private interconnect is on eth0 then on the node 2 it should use eth0 only...
for private interconnect use the hostonly option on both the nodes in the network configuration page of the vmware or virtual box..
and for public network it can be bridged
more over if you are installing on the laptop its good to configure the SSH using the OUI.. rather than doing it manually.. as it saves time
the private and the public networks should not have same range of ip address. like if public address are like 192.168.2.222/255.255.255.0 and private address have to be different like 10.10.1.2/255.0.0.0 (this is just an example)
have to configured the NTP.
any ways try installing the oracle rac on virtual box follow the steps given the below website they are pretty straight forward...
