Grid overlay when not cropping?

I am doing a sequence of photos and it would be extremely helpful if there was a grid overlay for the photo I am working on when I am not in crop mode, the same as the thirds grid overlay you see when using the crop tool.

Hi Geoff
We are doing large sequence surfing shots (30+ images) and the subject bounces around the photo area a bit.
If I had a grid when in full view while doing other edits, I would not need to keep toggling back and forth in the crop mode to see exactly where to line up the next shot in the sequence.
But because the cropped image is so small, it is not practical to do the other edits. So after completing the other edits, I need to go back into crop, check the position, back out of crop, go to next image, set position, then resume editing.
If the grid was present it would save 2-6 clicks per photo and we do 500-1000 per day.
Cheers
Greg

  • Grid Overlay does not show up in my LR5

I recently subscribed to the Creative Cloud and installed both Photoshop and Lightroom.
After working with the new LR5 for the first few days I noticed that when I am within the Lens Correction
and I click 'Manual' in order to manually correct perspective you always get a grid overlay that shows up when you hover
over the different Transform options (Distortion, vertical, horizontal, etc...) and it no longer shows the overlay.
In order for me to correct the perspective I have to manually click Option+Comand+O in order to get the grid, which is
a little bit annoying since it was automatic before.
Any clues why this is happening and how can I get that back?
    Thank you!

Make sure that you haven't got the "Show Grid" option set to "Never". You want it either to be "Auto" (which will display it as you hover over the controls), or "Always" (self-explanatory). The setting is on the Tool-bar (press T to show the tool-bar if it's currently hidden), and if the "Show Grid" option isn't showing click on the down-arrow at the right-hand end of the tool-bar and select "Grid Overlay" from the options which will be shown.

  • Develop Tool overlays do not show, crop distorts

    Lightroom 5.6 on Windows 8.1
Only installed today. Imported a Photoshop Elements 9 catalogue. Thought I'd play with Lightroom and retouch some old photos but I'm getting very odd problems.
The Develop Tool Overlays do not show when any of them besides crop. Yes I know you can turn them on, off or auto in Tools -> Tools Overlay menu option. No matter which I choose they never show up and do nothing when I try to drag, click brush etc.
The crop tool distorts my original image to a strange 16:9ish ratio before cropping.
Anyone heard of these problems? I've tried searching for these problems but can't find a solution.

I am having the same problem.  The crop menu doesn't show drop down menu's.  I am running the 64 bit version of
photoshop CS5 and I don't know if maybe it is a compatiblity issue?  Any help to get the drop down menus to appear?

  • Illustrator CS4 exporting images with subtle grid overlaye

I've run in to a rather troubling issue where Illustrator seems to be exporting images with a very subtle white grid overlay.
The raw images do not have this grid, neither do the images as viewed in Illustrator.
The grid appears when exporting as .png and .jpg in a variety of resolutions.
Any ideas what's going on or how to remedy?

The images were part of a web mockup that was created in AI.
"Save for Web" did not change the outcome.
I defaulted to Photoshop, which fixed my immediate problem.. but still does not answer my question as to why this is now happening when I have completed this process trouble-free numerous times before.

I use Week Cal on the iPod.  I think it was only $1.99.  It is a lot better and does a lot more than the one that came with the Palm Pilot.
As you know, unlike the Palm Pilot, the iPod does not come with a desktop application that you can sync your iPod calendar to.  Since I don't use Outlook, I have to use a Cloud based calendar to sync with my PC.  I use Hotmail's calendar for that.  (If your computer is a MAC, you can use iCal)

  • Saving as PDF, Photoshop CS5 (Acrobat not cropping)

Just upgraded to CS5 from CS3. In the earlier version, I always saved files as PDFs from the Print box. Then I'd open the PDF in Acrobat and check "Remove White Margins" in order to crop to my Photoshop file size. When I try this same method in CS5, Acrobat will not crop my image to match my Photoshop file size.
I believe it's an issue with Photoshop CS5 because I tried my same old method using Photoshop CS3 and the new Acrobat and it works like it used to. Is there another way to save as a PDF from CS5? Any ideas?
    Thanks.

Printing to PDF from the print box is an OS process - it takes the printer data that Photoshop sends and creates PDF from it.
Photoshop CS5 does use the newer Cocoa printing APIs, which could cause changes in the output (due to differences in Apple's code).
For saving PDF, I really suggest you just save the file as PDF from Photoshop and skip the print dialog.

  • Why are my files shrinking in MB so much when I crop?

No matter what, when I crop an image, even just the tiniest amount off of the edges my files are shrinking drastically. If I don't touch the file with cropping, it doesn't shrink when I save. So it's not a compression issue that I know of. An example would be of a 6 or 7 mb file shrinking down to anywhere from 900 something kb to 1.5 mb. I do these files for a photographer and for enlargements bigger than 8x10 that just won't work, so he has to re-do them, and he doesn't get this issue like I do. Is it possibly a setting in CS5? I've been banging my head over this for a few days because it's driving him crazy.
I'm just doing simple edits, curves in the studio and actions outdoors. Batch saving---if you think it could possibly something involved in that. (which I don't because it happens even when I don't batch save.)

He shoots in Jpeg, with a Nikon D300s that is 12 megapixels. Here is a screenshot with the crop bar open....Not really sure what other screen shots would help you. This particular file started out as 3 mb and shrunk to 904 kb. Studio files are typically smaller starting out, so that is why the 3 mb.

  • How to automatically ensure printing pdf in safari does not crop content

I realized today that printing  and saving as pdf in safari has been cropping my content. I dont know when this change occured or why, but at some point in time, content I've saved from safari by printing and saving as pdf has cropped the pages.
Is there a way to make sure that printing in safari selects a page size that automatically does NOT crop the content. As it stands now it automatically selects US paper size and that crops all my bank statements. I can put in a custom size buts its really inconcenient to have to do that every time. And every time, it reverts back to US paper. This was never a problem for me in the past and I'm not sure whats changed.
    thanks

Just to update, even if I select a custom size in print settings for the computer, safari automatically goes to US paper. Even if I select to scale content to fit, it still crops the content.
    I've also trashed Library/Preferences/com.apple.print.PrintingPrefs.plist

  • Remove grid lines when printing

I am trying to print a set of financial statements and do not want to see the grid lines when printing the final document. I cannot work out how to do this.
Some posts I have read say that grid lines are described as cell borders and suggest that they can be removed using the inspectors "cell borders " facility.
I have tried to do this but cannot make it happen. If I were to successfully remove the borders/grid lines then surely this would also remove the underlines I have inserted with great effort.
I would really appreciate anyone's help with this

One more time, it's useful to use our brain before stating a task.
If I read well, you used some cell borders as an underline segment.
Now you pay the result of a bad design.
You have no way to remove only borders which aren't "underlining" ones.
Next time think before and use the Underline text attribute so you will be able to remove the grid easily.
I know that some spreadsheets have two structures :
    grid
    borders
But, those which took time to read the User Guide know that in Numbers there is a single structure :
    borders.
So, remove or hide grid means remove or hide borders.
When we work with a tool, we may ask it what it is designed to do, not what we guess it will be able to achieve.

  • Loupe and Grid view rendering not as good as Develop view.

I recently see that while using LR 5.6 the images rendered in the loupe and grid views do not look nearly as good as the same image displayed in the develop view.  I have screen grabs if you'd like to see them below.  The Loupe and grid are not as saturated and the gradient in the sky is not nearly as smooth.  If I bounce between 'E' and 'D' it is pretty obvious.  Once in a while the 'E' (loupe) view looks the same.  I'm afraid that I will delete an image based on what I see in the Loupe or do unnecessary edits on an image.  When I exported to jpg, the images looked pretty good.
    Grid:
    Loupe:
    Develop:

As far as what could be contributing to a difference, other than an actual bug:
LR Previews are stored as AdobeRGB JPGs, so Library previews go from LR-Internal color profile to AdobeRGB to Display color profile, whereas Develop previews go directly from LR-Internal color profile to Display color profile.  If there are some colors that are outside of AdobeRGB then some conversion may occur.  The conversion to 8-bit JPG is also probably adding banding that Develop wouldn’t show.  There might also be Relative vs Perceptual color profile conversion differences occurring.  I don’t know the specifics of which is used for the Adobe color profile conversion and whether what you’re seeing is outside the expected variations.
If you view at less than 1:1/100% zoom, especially with Fit or Fill, then small details that vary across the group of original image pixels that are displayed as one display pixel can be averaged differently due to differences in the downsampling algorithms used between computing Library file previews and computing Develop display previews where Develop’s is built for speed because it occurs in real-time after every slider movement, where Library previews are computed in the background and so can use a more accurate resampling algorithm.  Usually this is only a difference in sharp/smoothness but it can also manifest as a difference in tone if there are lots of tiny noise spots getting averaged together inaccurately in Develop or more accurately in Library.
Since I can see only a tiny difference between Library and Develop on my monitor in this particular example, I can't imagine that small difference is enough to reject the Library version and accept the Develop version.  Maybe you're seeing others with more differences?

  • Why am I getting the flag Invalid URL for web content overlay when making scrolling panel in Indesig

Why am I getting the flag 'Invalid URL for web content overlay" when making scrolling panel in Indesign? Iam making additions to existing articles but the problem is new. The articles were originally made using CS and now I am on CC, which I have just uninstalled and re installed, no difference, can anyone help please? Steve

Hi Bob, thankyou very much for coming back on this. The flag is coming up towards the end of the preview process on desk top. I have made dozens if not hundreds on my two published apps on the app store, but have not done an update for nearly a year, in which time I have needed a refresher, and as usual went to Lynda. In this case I have followed to the letter your DPS course, which is great, and I found the process of making the scrolling panels somewhat easier than when I started 2-3years ago. Initially I was mystified that the flag talked about url and web content, but just put it down to something I had missed in recent improvements in CC.
I tried over and over, but always got the same result. I thought at one point it might be because the content of my slide was copy and photo, so for a test I deleted the photo. Same result, and many of my existing slides are copy and picture.
I also uninstalled Indesign CC and reinstalled in case of corrupted content, I also copied to IDML and relaunch, same problem. I am sure I have made the scrolling content as instructed, The one thing I havn't done is trash my preferences, if you think that would be a good Idea could you please direct me to some content at Lynda on how to do it in CC. Many thanks, Steve

  • Resolution problems when i crop

hello! i do a lot of photo editing and am temporarily using a laptop and a trial version of cs4 (i normally use cs2). i often square crop my images but have noticed that when i crop an image in cs4 on this laptop (running windows 7), my resolution automatically changes from 72 to 1 (for a jpeg image) or from 240 to 1 (if i shot in RAW)... i have never had this problem before.
i already checked to make sure i hadn't accidentally set the resolution to 1 in the tool bar... i also tried cropping with the resampling box UNCHECKED but that didn't work either... resolution was still changed to 1...
please, please help!! i have an assignment due for my photography class and i have to fix all my old images and properly crop new ones...
    thanks for reading this!

well, the thing is, i have been setting the same width and height for my square crops for over  a year now... the resolution problem started when i started cropping on this laptop, as opposed to my home computer (which i cannot use now as i am temporarily in another country!)...
NOTE: my pictures come out of my camera as follows: pixel dimensions 4272 X 2848 and when i crop, i always use the smaller dimension (2848)...

  • Possible to make regions transparent to see grid overlayed in Arrange ?

hi .. i was wondering if there is a setting somewhere to make the grid shine through the region in arrange window. I find it quite hard to align my audio tracks without seeing the grid on the waveform.
couldn't find this in the manual ...
    cheers

yes, I'll add my voice to saying how helpful it would be for a future update of logic to include an option for turning on a grid overlay over regions, or for being able to set the opacity of regions in order to see the grid beneath when editing. Personally, I get around it by using the method referred to in the post above mine.

  • When I crop in LR3 and move into PSE, the crop ratio changes.

I like LR's crop tool better than PSE, so I use that to crop before I move into PSE for further editing. I don't know if this would make a difference, but I do save the LR copy as a jpeg first cause I'm not always ready to finish editing it at that point (I know, not what everybody else does but it works for me). I crop in LR using 15x11, but when I open it in PSE it is only 13x9 (roughly). Any idea why the size would change? Should I not crop until I'm done editing, then go back into LR for the final cropping? Any help will be much appreciated! Thanks!

I understand how that would work, but I don't understand why it does it even AFTER I save the LR file as a cropped jpeg? If I save a crop in LR, shouldn't it save at the size I crop it to? I'm mainly referring to photos that I save first as a jpeg and export to my folders from LR, THEN open in PSE.
