Grinding away all too often...

I've been really happy with my MBP's performance since I purchased it around 10 months ago but just recently, and I'm sure it's after the 10.5.3 update, it seems to grind away even doing the smallest of tasks. It's something that I've not heard before and it just seems to happen all the time now.
It's like when you have an old computer and you can hear it grind away at every task you ask it to perform. I really notice it a lot when I'm using Safari but it's also apparent in every thing I do.
I've had a look at the Activity Monitor and there doesn't seem to be anything strange going on there - the kernal_task and WindowServer always seem high up in the list but not using a great deal of CP.
Any help with this would be much appreciated. Is there maybe something I can do to optimise it's performance or any other checks I can try - I'm a little lost as to what to try next. I remember ages ago I used to De Frag my drive - is that something I could try?

I'd get directly in touch with Coriolis, Alan. They are usually very responsive to requests for technical help in that sort of situation. email is [email protected]
What were you running it from? an external HD or a CD. Sometimes, if you have just booted up from an external HD, then spotlight indexing or other such processes can cause problems.
see their FAQ at http://www.coriolis-systems.com/iDefrag-faq.php:
+3. Do you recommend running iDefrag from a bootable CD?+
Yes!
+While you can run iDefrag from a hard disk, customers often find that other software is using the disk they are trying to defragment; since this other software is sometimes not immediately obvious (e.g. Spotlight’s indexer, or your anti-virus program), this can cause considerable confusion.+
+We therefore recommend that you use the CDMaker tool to create a bootable disc and run from there. You can get the CDMaker tool from the Downloads page.+

  • Can watching videos too often on Macbook Pro "wear down" the screen?

I watch most of my TV shows on my new macbook pro, and my mother just informed me that if you watch videos too often on a mac, that the screen can apparently wear down and die. Is this true? I'm not sure exactly what she meant by that or what could happen to my computer, but it doesn's sound exactly correct. Thanks!

Back in "the old days" when we all had green letters on black screens like in "War Games" (Matthew Broderick and Ally Sheedy) there were problems with "burn in" which was caused by the fact that only certain parts of the screen got used because the displays were text only. This is kind of like a prehistoric version of the problem with early plasma displays. Efforts to save CRT screens led to the creation of the ever-popular "Screen saver."
Most moms don't track display technology, so the notion remains that all video monitors are just shinier versions of last century's 15"/50 lb. wonders. Not so. Today's monitors will wear out, but most will be killed by their users long before that. Modern monitors CAN go off in color, loose brilliance, etc. over time  but not specifically from movies.  Notice I said movies, not video. The way we use computers these days, pretty much everything is video.
    Keep calm and surf on.

  • You have attempted to login too often...

We recently got Wi-fi set up in our house, since then ichat will not work. I will log in and it shows that none of my friends are online, then after about 2 or 3 minutes Ichat will log out then log in rapidly on its own. Then I get a message that says. "You have attempted to login too often in a short period of time. wait a few minutes before trying to login again." Then when I try to login again the same thing happens. can anyone help?

    Hi,
It can be for a Number of reasons.
One speculation is that the AIM servers get busy with AIM and ICQ members and now BEBO all using the same port. (not to mention all the apps that can log into AIM and the AOL ISP Browser that can IM)
As iChat uses port 5190 on the TCP Protocol to Login but uses port 5190 on UDP to Send Files, Pics in Chats & Direct Messaging and certain Buddy List updates Buddies coming and going) - some routers and modems that route do not seem to like this double use of port 5190 (it certainly effects Zyxels devices).
Sort of related, with Devices set up to Port Forward, a port can normally only be forwarded once (to one IP), so this seems, to some that specify Protocols as well, as doing it twice.
Apple have an Article that I don't have link for about Some Netgears needing to change this port.
More generally though port 443 is open in most routers and routing modems as it is under the threshold of 1024.
All ports below this are open.
It allows Web Browsers and Mail apps to use the ports they use without any set up.
Several routers can be linked together without any input and these apps will still work.
Port 443 is used by secure Web Sites such as Banks and the like and the Apple Discussions Login Page.
It is also used by mail apps to access some mail servers.
Therefore dropping the login port in iChat to this port is likely to find it is open in any router.
Pre Leopard the above also used to apply to the way the Mac Firewall worked as ports had to be specifically listed. This means if a ports is open for one app other apps can "Piggy Back" that usage.
In Leopard the App is "Certificated" and even if it allows a Port it will not be open for another app that is nt allowed to use the firewall.
    Hope this helps.

  • Adobe Flash Player Updates too often

Flash Player Updates are too often.
Just last week or so I finished updating the 500+ computers we have here at Kahakai Elementary School to version 15.9.
Now they all have to be updated to flash version 16.0
The students can't get to the test web page without the correct flash, it won't load with v15.9 it now wants v16.0
The students are NOT allowed to install/update software on the computers.
Can you at least NOT UPDATE FLASH for a 3 month window?

There have been three updates in December 2014 I think. I have several computers. Despite the fact that in the Global Settings, Advanced, I have the radio button for "Allow updates (recommended)" checked, I still need to download a file, click on it several times, and remember to unclick the extremely annoying McAlfee download (Grrrr, which bombarded as I am with updates on all my computers I have forgotten to do which installs a very power consuming program, which I then have to uninstall) which takes time.
On windows 8 the proxy settings can get in the way of the download requiring hours of work.
I would prefer not to download flash at most once a year not THREE TIMES A MONTH.
But perhaps I should be grateful to be using this software for free? or switch to HTML 5? There are firefox addins that allow one to choose, apparently.

  • FF updates happen way, way too often

Firefox 13 arrived and well, like suspected, plug-ins/add-ons are not compatible. Most important one for me is Kaspersky Anti Banner. So back to FF 12 for me.
Mozilla states that companies have more then enough time to alter their software: 6 weeks.
6 weeks? Come on, that is way to short! FF is forcing companies to work constantly on their software just to fit in their ridiculous update scheme of every 6 weeks an incompatible update!?
FF was the best browser for me but this weird, way to often update thing really brings it down. And I am not alone with this: just do a search on this way too often update cycle and you will find many, many complaints about it.
I did file it as a bug but all I got back was: "Developers are giving a 6 weeks heads up to make their software compatible. If they can not do this ... well, then it is their own fault."
Yep, Mozilla is beginning to show Micro$oft behaviour :(

this is a primarily user driven support forum, so there isn't much that we can do about it. if you want to give feedback to mozilla, use https://input.mozilla.org/feedback
my personal thoughts on the issue: most addons default to compatible anyway, so developers won't have any additional work to do for a new firefox release. if a commercial company like kaspersky decides that it wants to offer a browser addon one supposes it can't be that hard to keep up with a pre-scheduled release cycle of 6 weeks. they apparently also have the capability to constantly develop & distribute signatures every few hours.
you can also just use the adblock extension as alternative - it's free, works very well for millions of users & doesn't have any compatibility problems with new versions of firefox: http://adblockplus.org/en/getting_started

  • Slow loads,if you stop the page and refresh it loads fast, too often than I would expect.

way too often you have to "stop" and refresh the page to get it to load.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
    == Always.

    Hello.
It's possible that you are having a problem with some Firefox add-on that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?
Whenever you have a problem with Firefox, whatever it is, you should make sure it's not caused by one (or more than one) of your installed add-ons, be it an extension, a theme or a plugin. To do that easily and cleanly, run Firefox in [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode safe mode] (don't forget to select ''Disable all add-ons'' when you start safe mode). If the problem disappears, you know it's from an add-on. Disable them all in normal mode, and enable them one at a time until you find the source of the problem. See [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes this article] for information about troubleshooting extensions and themes and [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+plugins this one] for plugins.
If you need support for one of your add-ons, you'll have to contact its author.
If the problem is not disappears when all add-ons are disabled, please tell me, so we can work from there. Please have no fear of following my instructions to the line, as all can be easily undone.

How do I get my web pages back to original size? My fonts are all too large and keep reverting after I change them back!

That has not worked. I do it and still it reverts. Isn't there a way to tell Firefox to just go back to default settings?

  • Photoshop CS2 crashes too often!!!

I run Photoshop CS2 on my Mac Pro 2x2.66Ghz Intel Xeon, 5GB RAM, with Leopard OS X 10.5.2. I keep having problem with Photoshop quitting unexpectedly too often. It's not when doing certain types of task or anything, but just crashes randomly at any point. Sometimes I work fine for hours, and sometimes I can't even last 30min.
I do have CS3 installed, but don't really open it. I use CS2 for now.
I don't understand what might possibly be the problem.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

"I don't understand what might possibly be the problem."
The problem is you have a version of Photoshop supported under Leopard (CS3) and you are choosing to use one that isn't instead (CS2).
Try working with CS3. Besides the better stability, you should also notice a rather dramatic improvement in speed if you are working with files of any good size.

  • Mac needs to force restart too often

My mac keeps giving me an image on the screen (http://cjmiscfiles.webs.com/20110124211705.jpg) which says I need to force restart my Mac. I got this message 2 times in a week, and I got it once before. I just got my Mid-2010 Mac when it was first out, and I'm concerned that it might be breaking already. Please help!

Yeah I've been getting these force reboots as well, way too often, like 3 in the past 2 days actually, often within minutes of each other even after the reboot.

  • Bookmarks are shown permamently on the left of the screen. How do I get rid of them,so that the screen is not limited. I also do not have "print" oe "file"tabs at the top. I think it is all too complicated.

The Bookmarks are shown permamently down the left had side of the monitor acreen. I cannot find a way of removing them. I usually see the Bookmarks via the Firefox tab at the top left hand of the screen .
You information pages refer to tabs such as "file" ,"print", "view" etc on top , but I do not have these either.
I am afraid that I find this all too complicated

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in full screen mode (press F11 or Fn + F11 to toggle; Mac: command+Shift+F).

  • Overload, disk too slow etc far too often, why?

I would like to know how to prevent this happening, it is an all too familiar occurrence in Logic.
I have trialled some large projects in Logic to check performance and it seems that they are only using up to 28% of CPU, so how can a project of this size overload the system?
I use mostly midi, which keeps projects pretty small. I have tried freezing and protecting tracks but this makes 0 difference to CPU use.
    Is this a RAM issue?
I have even had this issue on my macbook pro which has 4GB RAM 2.4GHZ CPU. Quite embarrassing live when a backing stops half way!
Is there a way to rid Logic of these problems, or is it just an unstable platform?

I disagree with the above poster... 3G of RAM is not really enough to warrant turning off VM in EXS (which you do, BTW, by going to Options > Virtual Memory right in the EXS's front panel). But again, I wouldn't.
Question... are you using a lot of plugins on each channel strip? In a similar vein, have you selected some (or many) of your sounds by loading up channel strip presets which might be pre-programmed with EQ and Reverb right in the channel strip?
Also, re live stuff, have you optimized your rig for live performance? On a side note, is it really necessary for you to run virtual instruments live? Couldn't you bounce them all down to stereo (or a few stems) and run that instead? See, there are a million things that could be going wrong with your system (or your approach to setting up a live playback system) which would account for why you're getting overload messages, etc. The best way to alleviate the entire problem is to commit your tracks to audio and be done with it.

  • OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 Crashes Too Often

    Hi,
My iMac and MBP have been upgraded to OS X Mavericks 10.9.3. They crash too often.
    Ed

    Provide the crash report.
You might also provide an EtreCheck report as well.
Did you install 3rd Party RAM recently?  Bad RAM is a frequent cause of kernel panics
Are you running an Anti-Virus package?  Another frequent cause of kernel panics, and completely unnecessary on Macs, as Mac OS X includes very good anti-malware measures built-in.

  • MBP 2008 late crashes too often after update to Mavericks

My Macbook Pro 2008 late(First generation of Unibody) works perfect on OS X 10.8.x, but after update to Mavericks yesterday, it crashes too often, about 1 hour 1 time.
It seems com.apple.driver.AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement caused the issue, but I have no idea how solve it.
I checked the kernel extensions, found there are some from VirtualBox, so update it to latest 4.3.0 version, it have initial Mavericks support, but crashes still.
