Grinding noise from PowerMac G4

As the topic suggests, I swapped Hard Disk Drive for boot up and still the noise persists. I thought it might have been a HDD on the way out (unless 3 HDD's have gone at once but they all work in the different bays). Here's the kicker though, when I open the side panel after start up (because I'm frustrated by this problem) the noise is gone. When I close the panel, it returns. I have a Radeon 9800 with onboard fan. If it's that, can I replace the fan or should I take it to a authorised dealer who charges $99 just to open the mac for me. Thanks in advance

Do a web search for "replace fan on radeon 9800" and check out postings like [this one|http://www.techspot.com/vb/all/windows/t-39471-Radeon-9800-Pro-stock-fan-no ise.html] and [this one|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4798974]. I have never even looked into this but it looks like there are solutions, and maybe multiple causes, out there. I also saw mention of Arctic Cooling ATI Silencer 1 (Rev.2), for example at [this site|http://www.velocityreviews.com/reviews/Arctic-Cooling-ATi-Silencer.php].

  • New T500 Grinding Noise from Hard Drive

My brand new T500 Hard Drive makes off and on very faint grinding noise. The grinding happens for 6 times and then goes away for 5-10 seconds and then happens again and so on.
Is this normal or is my new hard drive defective, and should I ask Lenovo for a replacement hard drive?
I ran the lenovo hard drive diagnostic tool and it did not find any issues.

Fortunately Dell has released firmware update DE17 for the following Seagate models that seems to work for my Lenovo:

  • Grinding noise from hard disk

I have been going through posts but cannot find specific similar cases so am posting a new topic.
I have slow downs and spinning wheels accompanied by 3 grr.grr.....grrr where ..... is a second length pause. Repeats every 2 seconds. ( same timing as a wood pigeon or dove song !!) 10 slowdowns with spinning wheels while writing this. It makes this noise whenever there is a spinning disk. Every 10 - 20 seconds!
This seems to be since 10.5.8 update.
Back up to a firewire G-tech drive gives me a lot of read/write errors and can't copy files on iphoto files and one mp3 file. No way round but to copy in batches to find the culprits. Finder freezing and have to force quit on the copy error. I get a -36 error code. Random files that were ok are impossible to copy. Time capsule has been getting stuck on backups for a month. Can't track down a reason. I don't know if its getting stuck on the same files.
So - is my hard drive on the way out with this noise and hanging???
I am not up for an archive and install. Its lengthy and I don't think it will help............
I tried to compress my i photo "originals" folder but to no avail - error half way through I presume on one of the files that it can't copy.
Anyone any suggestions. A complete power down battery out helps but I am just waiting for the next session of hangs.
A verify disk gives the disk a green light. I don't have my original install disk with me (me in France - disk in UK).
    MBP 2.5 Mac OS X (10.5.6) 4 GB

Cheering news - I was afraid this was going to be the case.
However - I have no console log - HD/Library/logs/etc. Spotlight won't find it either.
Also it seems I cannot just copy whole chunks of files - I just get read/write errors half way along and have to start again.
Finder crashing and freezing each time requiring a force quit. It crashes when I press "stop copying".
Any ideas of recovering these read/write error files would be gratefully received.

  • Strange grinding noise from my superdrive on a specific disc!?!

This is very weird. When I insert a specific software disc into my superdrive, there is a grinding and buzzing sound...like there is a weed whacker inside the computer.
Again, this is really weird because no other disc has this problem...
It appears to be reading fine, albeit a little slower than normal.
Is it hurting the superdrive to run this disc? Does anyone know what would cause a disc specific behavior like this?

Two common possibilities is that the disk is reading with lots of errors causing the drive to re-read sectors, or that the data is poorly distributed across the disk and it has to do lots of reads to get it all.

Sounds like the disk in your MBP is accessing data on wake up
If you are still concerned you can take it into the Apple Store where they can hear it to be sure

  • My Powermac g5 makes wierd noises from PSU

My Powermac g5 makes weird noises from PSU is not continuous it does that irregularly could be the PSU Frying or is just the fans going bad ?

I'd say it's most likely the fan going bad, but have you blown the dust out of the PSU lately?

  • Grinding Noise and Frozen Macbook

Last night I was awoken out of a sound sleep by a loud grinding noise coming out of my MacBook. This was not a 'hum' or a 'buzz' this was a full nuclear invasion Alert! When I investigated, the Macbook was frozen. The screen was on but the keyboard and mouse were unresponsive. I did a hard reboot (what else was there) and it returned to its happy little self.
I'm worried that this is a failing harddrive. Anyone else have an experience like this? I have an appointment w/ the Genius Bar but I'm not really interested in four hours on the road to get their opinion if they can't do anything until the computer completely dies.
PS. There was NO kernel panic.

A couple of things to try...
    1. Run the Disk Utility directly from the DVD. Verify and repair permissions and then verify the drive. See if you get any errors and report back.
    2. Run the Apple hardware test, also from the DVD.
    3. Reset the PRAM and the SMC. Apple has outlined how to do this on their site.
If none of these things show any errors, that doesn't mean it can't happen again. I'm starting to think these hard drives in the MacBooks are flimsy and bad updates don't help either.

  • Grind noise when waking up

My MacBook is about 2 months old and from the very beginning, or very close to it, it has made this weird grinding noise when I open the lid and it wakes up. It sounds as if it were coming from the DVD drive, but the sound happens whether or not there there is a DVD/CD in or not. I'm concerned that there might be something wrong and I'm wondering if anyone else has ever had this problem.
    Thanks.

Nope, thats perfectly normal mine does that too. Its just the DVD/ CD-RW drive waking up as well a bit annoying but again normal.

  • Grinding noise on start up

    Good Morning,
I have a G-series laptop currently 1 1/2 months out of warranty and it is making a grinding noise upon start up.  It seems to go away once the laptop has started up completely ad the desktop is ready.
I have a second laptop of the same make/model and purchased at the same time with an lcd that died two weeks after the warranty expired.
So, long story short I have two 13 month old laptops that have significant issues.  Help!

The grinding noise could be the fan or the hard drive.  Next time you boot up carefully put a plastic coffee stirrer in the fan area to keep it from spinning, do you still hear a grinding noise?  If not it is the fan, if so then move on to the next step.  (I don't advocate leaving the fan blocked for any longer than a quick test FYI).
If the grinding noise continued then it's most likely the Hard Drive, go into the BIOS F10 at startup and navigate to the Diagnostics Tab and then run a Hard Drive test and see if it returns an error.

  • Boot up and wake from sleep noise from superdrive normal???

whenever booting up or waking from sleep, the superdrive seems to make a loud, not grinding, but close to grinding noise.
this noise is on other mbp's that i tested at the apple store, but it's really annoying, like your drive is about to die.
this happens every time on boot up and wake from sleep. do others find this acceptable or normal?
everything else is great. i do have the cpu idle whine, but it's intermittent and running the mirror widget definitely resolves the issue until the next restart.

that's really unfortunate. coming from pc side of computing, i don't recall such an awful sound when booting up laptops tha t had similar drives.
as for previous apple notebooks, i could only comment on the ibook g3 model which had a more pleasing mechanical sound...kind of like whirring(although not a superdrive).
also, a car cd player mechanism is much smoother and much more quiet. apple should pay more attention to this area like bmw does.
the only solution is to keep a cd or dvd loaded in the drive, but peace and quiet comes at the expense of battery longevity.

  • [HELP] HP Pavilion DV6-6b50sa fan - abnormal whirring and grinding noises even after replacement

    Product:     HP Pavilion DV6-6b50sa
    Operating system:    Windows 7 64bit
    BIOS version:   F.1 C  (current)   01-2013
My laptop fan started making a very loud grinding and whirring noise constantly (very loud, easily heard in other rooms from the laptop) and after cleaning out with compressed air with no improvement I decided to get the fan replaced as it was clearly worn out in some way. (This laptop fan has always been loud, but never making this sort of grinding sound).
Replacement fan was ordered directly from HP and installed. However, while the noise is much quieter, the fan is still making a constant sort of whirring/very low grinding noise which gets louder and changes pitch whenever the fan kicks up to a higher speed.  While the laptop is now at least useable, this noise is still annoying after being on for a long time and I did not expect it to still have the same problem after fully replacing the fan.
Since then I have looked online for solutions and similar problems, having since flashed the BIOS to the latest version, checked both the hard drive and memory in the BIOS (both proved fine)  and tried switching between having the fan mode set to always on or not always on in the BIOS and messing around with HP coolsense. None of these have helped remove this constant whirring sound.
Now this laptop fan has always been loud. That I am ok with, I know the sound of a loud, yet working fan drawing air, but this is not the same sound. The fan is still drawing air sufficiently and keeping the system temperature down to an acceptable level, but this constant whirring noise is annoying when having to work on the laptop.
    [In Summary]
-HP Pavilion DV6-6b50sa  Laptop fan had loud whirring/grinding noise
    -Fan was replaced
-Noise reduced and grinding somewhat gone, but whirring and some grinding remains even with the new fan from HP
Any help would be great, I have tried to include as much information regarding the problem as I can but if there is anything else needed dont hesitate to ask and I can try to provide such information as required.
    Michal.

Also, when the fan is running at higher speeds the whirring/grinding noise is quieter and less noticable than when it is running at very low speeds... When running at very very high speeds (while playing games)  the fan sounds almost the same as my old one when it was still working, and at high speeds its more a whirring humm... Then at lower speeds it goes back to a more low whirring/grinding.
Not sure if this helps but its just something I've noticed...  Any help with this problem?

  • Fan "grinding" noise

The fan in my G4/450 AGP has been making this intermittant grinding noise for almost three years now. I can only guess that the power supply is slowly failing. My question is, if I let the power supply completely die, will it corrupt any of the data on my hard drive?

There are several fans in there. There is one in the power supply, and there is a much larger fan behind the hard drive shelf. You may also have a graphics card with a smaller fan.
If either of the large fans fails, you Mac may overheat and stop working. If the Power supply fan fails, it may cook components inside the power supply. Power supplies are intended to fail gracefully, without zapping anything, but there are no guarantees. Also, a too-hot Hard drive is much more likely to fail. On 450 MHz G4s, overheating should just cause it to shut down. On later G4s, permanent damage could result.
You also should check to see whether the fans are clean -- dust can have a major impact on cooling and noise.
That Mac can be operated with the side door open for a while. I suggest you open the door and try to determine where the noise is coming from.

  • Grinding noises and frequent jams in HP Photosmart 6520

A piece of paper tore in the printer the other day and required a bit of tugging to get both pieces out. Since then, the printer has made grinding noises as it prints and every 2nd or 3rd piece of paper jams. And ALL pieces of paper have a notch or small rip at the same point after going through the printer. I checked under the printer and it's at the spot where a small stick of plastic teeth contacts the paper. I think this piece isn't moving at the right time (I can tell it's on a spring), causing the paper to catch on it as it gets pulled up into the machine.  The standard "Paper Jam" routine isn't helping. Anyone have advice for this kind of problem? BTW, the printer prints photos just fine. It's a problem with paper feeding out of the tray. I've also been having frequent network problems with this printer for about a month, but I assume those are unrelated...

Hi , and welcome to the HP Forums! I understand you're getting jams, alongside some grinding noises.  I would like to help! I would recommend removing the ink cartridges from the printer, and perform a power reset.  Disconnect the power cord from the printer and the power outlet, then wait 60 seconds. After 60 seconds, plug the printer back in. Ensure you plug the printer directly to a wall outlet. Make sure to bypass any sort of surge protector or power bar. I would also recommend the steps in the following documents: A 'Paper Jam' Error Displays on the HP Deskjet Ink Advantage 6520 e-All-in-One and HP Photosmart 6520 e-All-in-One Printer Series A 'Carriage Jam' Message Displays for HP Deskjet Ink Advantage 6520 e-All-in-One and HP Photosmart 6520 e-All-in-One Printer Series Good luck and please let me know the results of your troubleshooting steps. • Grinding noise at bootup

    Hello,
This laptop: dv7t-2000 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC - about 7 months out of warranty, has started to make a fairly loud grinding noise at bootup. (the noise seems to let up as it reaches the desktop.
I did notice a momentary "pink" looking screen once right before it reached the windows desktop.
The hard drive test from the BIOS reported "passed".
Help appreciated as to what to look for now.

yeah do a search on this forum and refer to all the other posts about the bug with the radio coming on with windows when it is supposed to be muted.
go to Volume Control > and depending on your system mute either the Radio or Aux audio inputs. then when you start and close the radio program it will mute/unmute this setting automatically

  • Weird noise from CPU

A few nights ago I awoke to hear my P-book G4 making a loud crackling noise so I freaked out and shut it down. After restart the next day it booted fine and then just booted up to a blue screen. I Waited until today and I tried to reboot off of the startup disk, and it spit that out and then all of a sudden it restarted normally but made those crackling noises again. THe noises have now stopped and I am running disk utility on it to see if that helps but does anyone know anything about this issue and if so could I have some help. Thanks

Denny: Replace your hard drive. The optical drive can't possibly make crackling or grinding noises without a disc in it, and it can't slow the operation of the computer to a crawl or prevent a normal startup from the hard drive. A failing hard drive would account for all the symptoms you've experienced, including the awful noises. Replacing the HD is easy; instructions for doing so are right in your Powerbook owner's manual.
I hope all your data is backed up, because any grinding noises you've been hearing could have been the read-write heads in your hard drive plowing furrows into the surface of the platter where your data used to be. You'll be very, very lucky if you're able to recover everything important from that drive. The more you try to use it, the smaller your chances of salvaging anything from it will become.
