Grinding sound in refurbished 60 GB video iPod

I just got a refurbished video iPod, and in playback when I start the first song, or switch songs to a new album, I'm getting some minor grinding and whirring noise and vibration. It doesn't seem to happen when it switches between artists or albums in shuffle mode. And it doesn't happen once I'm playing consecutive songs on the same album. Should I be concerned? My fourth generation iPod never made a sound (except for music).

  • No sound on video Ipod after sync?

Every night I leave my video ipod plugged into my PC to sync up with my podcasts overnight. In the morning I just grab it and head out. Lately, maybe 1 out of every 3 times, there is no sound when I go to play anything on the ipod and I have to do a quick reset. I did recently update my Itunes software but I dont think that could have anything to do with it.

    Hi Phil,
Have you tried restoring your iPod to factory settings?
For instructions and info on how to restore an iPod in iTunes, see this:

Also, is your iPod's firmware updated to the latest (which, I believe, is 1.2.1)?

  • IPhone vs. Video iPod battery life & sound

For those that have used both, which will play video the longest - iPhone or Video iPod?
Also, which is loudest? I use the Video iPod on flights with noise cancelling earphones but find it is still not loud enough. Would the iPhone be louder in this case?
    Thanks,
    Brett

Patience my friend! And welcome to Apple Discussions!
Anyway, sounds like your connecting your iPod to your computer.
Does your iPod show up in iTunes? If so, eject the iPod from iTunes and the Do Not Disconnect screen should go away.

  • Grinding Sound/Frozen IPod

I connect my ipod to the computer and it starts updating, but then it makes a grinding sound, then freezes, then makes a beeping sound and tells me its out of battery and needs to be connected, despite the fact it is connected to the computer and the little battery meter shows its charging. Then it disappears from ITunes as though its not there. Help!!!!!

I have the same problem with my IPod 20GB... i have a weird buzzing sound inside my IPod and it's frozen... there is a smiley-face who's looks dead...
Please help me if you can...

my sound won't work on my ipod 5. I plugged the speakers in and it works fine.  When the headphones aren't plugged in and I turn the volume up it says that they are plugged in.  Please help !

    - Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so. (this was already sugested) There is a little switch in the headphone jack that disconnects the speaker when the headphone jack is inserted.
Try the following to rule out a software problem
    - Check also Settings > General > Accessibility > Hearing. Make sure that the sound balance is not set all the way to "R".
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Seems you have a bad headphone jack.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
If not under warranty Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one for this price. They do not fix yours.

30gig and i've not had a single problem related to vista.
any problems have been to me never having owned an ipod .
just thought i'd set the record straight for those who are thinking of getting a video ipod and already have vista .
you know , just fyi .
but i am wondering , how well does the ipod record notes ?
and anyone here in a band and tape their rehearsals ? was wondering how it sounds . thanks all !

after I watched them they dissappeared from my ipod,
Sounds like you have selected to only sync unwatched video content to your iPod.
This is a setting that you can change in your iTunes preferences.

  • Video ipod wont add any more MP4 video files?

i have well over 23 GB left on my 30 GB video ipod and for some reason stupid itunes will not add the files to my movies setion of my library. I have the videos in my documents, and i click add file to library, that doesnt work, and when i double clcik the file so it will play in itunes, that doesnt work either! PLEASE help.

    Oh, my mistake!
The screen is leaving pixel lines? That sounds like a pretty well damaged iPod.
If restoring/updating hasn't worked, the best thing to do is to request service for your iPod. If it is under warranty, they will do it for free:

  • Problems with my new Video iPod

Hi, I just got a brand new black 30GB video iPod, so far it has been great. However, I've noticed a problem with the HD. Whenever the HD is spinning up and the iPod is moved you can hear the HD clunk. It also tends to make a odd whirring noise when I move the iPod around. If the iPod is moving around during startup (Apple logo appears) it will clunk and I will get the sad iPod icon. This doesn't seem right, this is exactly what my previous iPod did (20GB 4G) and that is why I got the new video iPod as a replacement. It just doesn't seem right for it to do this. Has anyone else noticed this before or do I just have bad luck with my iPod's? Secondly, I was considering buying the Apple USB power adapter. It is possible to buy a 3rd party charger for less money than what Apple wants? It's really stupid to not have a charger included on a device this expensive.
    Power Mac G5 SP 1.8 (Rev B.), iMac G3, iPod Video 30GB Black   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

The sad face icon usually means the hard drive is dead. If you're seeing it, it sounds like your hard drive is about to die. I'd exchange it or get it repaired. One thing I would do now too is to do the diagnostic on the iPod just to see if the hard drive is bad. Reset the iPod by pressing Menu and Center. Right when the Apple logo appears, quickly hold down Center and RW. Press Menu to do manual test, go to IO, go to HardDrive, and then to HDSmartData. If the hard drive is good, it gives values for retracts, reallocs, and some other numbers.
Third party USB power adapters should work fine, and yes I agree it is cheesy and cheap for Apple not to include one, which they used to when they were nicer.

  • My 30 GB video ipod plays video but they have no audio

i have a 30 gb video ipod and the videos i put on it do not play audio i have used the mpeg4 streamclip and it still doesnt work please help me

You can use itunes convert mov and mpg to mpeg-4. One thing though, is that if you convert an mpg (mpeg-1 or mpeg-2) muxed (muxed means that the video and audio are put together on one single track) than you loose the video or sound when converting them to mpeg-4 from itunes. If your videos are muxed you must find another video converter on the web. You can find out if the original video that you are trying to convert for the ipod is muxed by opening the original video in quicktime and then click on the Window menu then click on Show Movie Info this will show you if the file is muxed.

  • Video ipod update Freeze

having just installed the updated software for my video ipod,
when playing movies the picture freezes after 30 seconds or so
and then plays without sound! I have tried to reset numerous times but it does not help. music and picture files are fine though.

If you don't want to wade through all the responses, I'm copying here an extract of the answer I gave in that thread:
For those people like me who don't have firmware 1.0, I've modified the procedure a bit to suit our purpose. Here's what needs to be done for downgrading to firmware 1.0 without losing any data for new iPods that only come with firmware 1.1 Installation CD:
-Connect your iPod to your computer, ensures its updated via iTunes, then disconnect it from PC and exit iTunes
    - Download iPodSetup 2005-11-17 here:
    http://appldnld.m7z.net/content.info.apple.com/iPod/ww/win/061-2225.20051128.PDW nw/iPodSetup.exe
    - Download iPodWizard here:
    http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=153441
(download the release, top link of the two)
    - Uninstall iPod for Windows 2006-1-10 and reboot
    - Install iPodSetup 2005-11-17
-Connect your iPod to PC, make sure iTunes is not running
    -Launch iPodWizard.
-In the top left, click "Open Updater"
-Locate the iPod Updater.exe located in a sub-folder where you just installed iPodSetup 2005-11-17
-In the "Firmware:" drop down menu, select "5th Generation iPod (v.13.6.0)"
-Click "Load" just to the right of the drop down menu
-In the iPodWizard Essentials box on the right, it should say "Found 1 iPod drives:"
-Click "Downgrade Firmware". I'ts very quick.
    -Close the iPodWizard
-Again, make sure iTunes is not running
-From your Start menu, run iPod Updater 2005-11-17 and click "Update", not "Restore"
-Once the update is completed (it takes a few minutes), exit the iPod Updater and run it again to view the new firmware number. It should read:
"Software Version: 1.0 (up to date)"
-Launch iTunes. A pop up window will ask you if you want to download the new software version 1.1. Tick the box "Do not ask me again" and click "CANCEL"

  • VIDEO IPOD HELP....REAL BAD

i've just about had it with Apple...this isn't the first time (last year with my 20 GB i had all sorts of trouble) AND ITS STARTING TO **** ME OFF. I got a video ipod about a year ago and and its been working beautifully and i treated it like a baby. just a few scratches and one drop while it was in its case not that far off the ground. I was listening to it last night and all of a sudden it froze...this freeze is different..the screen is on, the motor sounds like its on, but when i turn the ipod a little it makes a funny sound (like the engine is hitting something) I pluged it in and tried reseting it, ive tried pluging it in my frickin computer. but nothing works, and it really makes me MAD.

Sounds like harddrive problem. Have you tried restoring it?

  • 30GB Video iPod quirks...

I have been having some odd issues with my new 30GB Video ipod. First, it sometimes doesnt want to unmount. I have to turn off most software and log out of other open accounts before it may (or may not) work. Second, I was playing music on it today and noticed that while they showed up in the playlists, the name of the songs as they played were blank. It showed the album art, but nothing else. Oh, and the icon for a video was in the upper right of the screen...weird! I restored it and now it seems fine, but I'm not sure if anyone else is having similar quirks. Anyone?.........Bueller?......Bueller?

  • One Solution For No Sound for imovie on Export to ipod from QT

In converting edited imovie projects to video ipod movies, I found the video had sound only for the first edited "clip" in the timeline. I finally solved this problem by extracting the audio from the clips- then saving the project. I convert the project movie to an ipod movie by first opening the QT imovie file in the project with QT pro 7.04, then export to ipod.

  • Video-iPod Compatible USB 2.0  PCMCIA (PC Card)

I'm getting more than a little frustrated looking for a direct answer to my question:
I am looking for a USB 2.0 PC Card for my TiBook that will give my video iPod full functionality with the laptop.
So far all I can find is what I don't care about: I don't want to hear about minis, shuffles, or nanos. I don't want to hear about PCs, PowerPC towers or PowerBooks with USB 2.0 built in. I don't want to hear about charging - I want to know which card, including model number, that will work completely.
I've already tried an older Belkin card that I borrowed, and a CompUSA card that I am now selling at a loss because it didn't work. Some people have used cards that worked, but don't give a brand and/or model number.
      Mac OS X (10.4)

quote > eww: "instead of ranting at us about what you don't want to hear, you could be searching the Tibook forums yourself for "USB 2".
Actually I spent a good deal of time fruitlessly searching these forums for 'usb 2.0' and 'pc card', PCMCIA, etc. hence my frustration. People with PCs for instance, were posting unhelpful things like: "I don't use a Mac but my friend does and he uses a PC Card that works perfectly." People with Minis were posting about charging with firewire. There was just too much irrelevent stuff after a couple hours to hunt through.
quote > eww: "whatever you may mean by "work completely," which you haven't defined at all, may not be precisely what tjk or anyone else understands it to mean".
I was trying to be concise when I said I was, "looking for a USB 2.0 PC Card for my TiBook that will give my video iPod full functionality with the laptop." Sorry if I wasn't clear.
I'll elaborate then: I want to use my 5.5g video iPod with my 500 mhz G4 Titanium PowerBook, including video playback. The TiBook does not come with USB 2.0 factory installed, so video playback doesn't work and file transfers are slow. I tried a 4 year old Belkin USB 2.0 PCMCIA card that my boss loaned me, but the iPod didn't mount. I bought a new card from CompUSA (storebrand), which didn't work either. I have gleaned from these forums that there are cards that work and there are cards that do not, but I haven't found a post or link that precisely says what brand and model these are. Sorry again if that sounds like I am asking for a guarantee of some sort.
I just did a search for tjk's thread as you suggested, and I did see tjk's posts before. It was actually the one I used as an example of my frustraion above.
    William the PC Poster:
"But I do have a friend in Calif. that does have a powerbook and I know he has a usb card, used it to charge my ipod... will im him and find out... hold on. "
    and
"Ok, here is the scoop, my friend has a powerbook with a usb card, his internal died. (hmmmmm a mac with a problem but he did say that it is as fast as his internal card was and as fast as his g3. He said that it is the same. His Ipod charges as fast as it does on his mainframe. "
he did post this, which was on the right track:
"I did talk to my friend again, and he told me that he bought a card from airnet that was only 14 dollars, and it was a 2.0 but low power. It was also noticably slower then this card, he paid 19 dollars for his belkin and it works great. He got his card while visiting us in Mexico. He said that this one charges his ipod and transfers both video and pictures as well as music at a fast pace. "
But get a load of tjk's final post in the thread, sound familiar?:
    "Hi william,
Any chance you know or would find out exactly which PB and card your friend has that apparently syncs at USB2 speed?
    Thanks"
That was back in November, I doubt William will be posting back at this late date.
