Ground hum through desktop speakers - suggestions?

I'm getting 60Hz ground loop hum through the subwoofer of my 2.1 desktop speaker system connected to the analog audio out of my Mac Pro. I unplugged & disconnected every other electrical device in the office, including the cable modem. I thought the issue was a faulty subwoofer, but I just bought a second one, and it hums, too. Not an issue when plugged into my iPhone. The sub has a two-prong polarized AC plug. Both the Mac Pro and the sub are plugged into the same AC outlet via a shared extension cord. Tried plugging the sub directly into a different AC outlet, but no joy.
I'd rather track down and fix the problem than put a Band-Aid on it in the form of an isolator. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks for the advice. I'm not electrically handy and don't have any tools for checking my household wiring. All I've read on the topic indicates that ground loops are generally caused by having the two devices plugged into different outlets. I've got my Mac Pro and desktop speakers plugged into a 3-prong 3-into-1 adaptor at the end of a very heavy-duty 3-prong 25' extension cord that runs into a 3-prong AC outlet. The speaker's plug is 2-prong polarized. I've decided to try connecting the speakers to the Mac Pro via a USB-audio adaptor rather than the Mac Pro's built-in analog audio port. I'm awaiting arrival of the adaptor and will report the results here when it arrives.

Problem here is you admit you cannot afford the service.
And you want to blame Verizon for losing a job because you have no cell phone.
If your job depends on that phone I would pay it on time every time if you need a job to pay your bill.
No other service is going to treat you any different. And if you cannot afford Verizon's monthly invoice how are you going to afford new devices, activation fees, possible security deposits on any other cellular carrier? You can't.
Also if you made an arraignment to pay and then decide you cannot do so, why should Verizon extend you service or credit, or why is it you want to use the service and data and not pay for it as agreed.
Get a prepay phone. Its evident the cost is too high for you to afford on post pay.
    Good Luck

  • No sound through external speakers on my iphone 4s but headphones work fine! When headphones unplugged volume button shows headphones not plugged in! Tried all solutions suggested here to no luck?!??

No sound through external speakers but fine through headphones! Button on left is not on mute and checked all settings and all fine! Tried all solutions here but no luck! Sound gone before I updated the software??

You may have debris in your headphone jack blocking the sensor.  Try blowing hard on the jack, and inserting/removing your headphones quickly multiple times to clear it.

  • How to eliminate ground hum?

I have recently tried recoding my Roland Juno synth into Logic but have discovered that there is a ground hum issue.
I have taken the Juno to a synth repairer and they have suggest that I remove the ground earth from the plug to cure the problem!!!
I understand that this is extremely dangerous and am not prepared to carry this out.
Can anyone suggest another way around this issue.
Some of my thoughts so far have been:
    - Can I use a DI box with an earth lift switch?
-Could I record the Juno with ground hum to one audio track, and create another track with just the sound of the ground hum, and then invert the phase of the channel containing the hum?
    - Use Logic's Noise Gate or Strip Silence?
    - Is there a piece of kit I can buy that could remove the hum?
FYI, I am plugging the Juno into the mains outlet at the wall and not through a powerboard.
I look forward to any comments.
    Cheers,
    Mr Rock

I can sympathize. Ground hum can be very frustrating to diagnose and eliminate. The ideas that you have suggested are all worth trying. You can lift the ground from the keyboard with one of those little adapters. You can get them at any hardware store. That can be the quickest, easiest and cheapest fix. Don't alter your keyboard by removing the ground prong from the plug or anything like that. The 3-2 ground lift adapter will do the same thing and it's reversible. If that's what the repair shop was suggesting, I'd find a new repair shop. If that's their idea of a solution, chances are they might have missed something while diagnosing the problem. A power supply problem in the kbd. would be one of the first things to check out.
But, assuming the kbd. is OK, here are some other ideas.
Have you tried a different audio cable to connect the keyboard?
Have you checked the outlet(s)? Maybe you have a problem with your AC wiring that you didn't know about? You can buy a cheap outlet checker at the hardware store. Mine is a little plastic thing, about the size of a ground lift adapter, w/ 3 LEDs that light in different combinations to show wiring irregularities. Is the keyboard plugged into the same AC circuit as the rest of your gear? If not, try that.
You could try the DI ground lift, too.
It could be any piece of connected gear that is interacting w/ the kbd. to cause the buzz. My friend recently spent a few long days chasing down a similar problem only to discover - by accident - that it was his display monitor that was causing the problem. Ideally, you have to isolate the problem. The best way to do that is to completely disconnect (AC & audio cables) everything except the kbd, computer and interface and see of the problem is still there.
Recording the noise separately and inverting the phase of that track should work in theory but I think you would have to record the noise-by-itself track in perfect phase w/ the noise-plus-keys track in order to cancel is completely. In any case, it would be an interesting experiment to try. If you can afford it, Izotope RX is very effective for this type of problem http://www.izotope.com/products/audio/rx/

  • How to listen to itunes through external speakers

I have Intempo IDS ipod speakers and want to know how to plug them into my laptop so i can listen to my itunes playlist through the speakers... I have read that there should be a box in the bottom right of the screen to select speakers but I do not have this and I do have the look for speakers box ticked in my preferences.
Any suggestions? what needs to be plugged in where?
any help would be much appreciated
    Ela.

I have read that there should be a box in the bottom right of the screen to select speakers but I do not have this and I do have the look for speakers box ticked in my preferences.
That is only for speakers connect to an Airport Express wireless system. There is no setting in iTunes to play through speakers connected to your computer. All you should have to do is plug them into your laptop's audio/headphone output.

  • Why is my mouse making noise through my speakers?

Just got a new mac mini. I hooked it up to my M audio firewire 1814 sound card, and I'm getting noise through the speakers every time I move the mouse, every time an application is loading, every time a web page is loading. I presume it's some kind of electro magnetic interference, but does anyone know how I can remedy it? This did not happen with my previous MBP (now dead) or my borrowed Macbook.
Further detail: Through the headphone output, there is no noise. Only through the main output.
    Thanks for reading

    Good suggestions
Ok, just tried those things, but no luck.
I turned off wifi and BT and loaded an application, and still got a lot of noise.
    I also tried...
*unplugging the screen and loading something.
*switching the power outlet I was using.
*moving the firewire cable away from all the other cables.
*switching to the second firewire port on my sound card.
    More suggestions totally welcome!

  • I have sound either with my desktop speakers OR my HDTV connected with an HDMI cable

I have a Media center desktop - Model M7330n, product number ERR101AA-ABA. It has onRealtek AC97 audio on-board audio (I think) I just upgraded to a GeForce 210 graphics card in order to be able to connect to my flat screen using an HDMI cable. I am running SP3 of Windows XP , have updated to the latest BIOS, have updated the AC97 drivers. Everything is working except I can either have sound on my desktop speakers by designating the Realtek AC97 as the default audio output or I can have audio on my TV by designating the NVIDIA Hi-def audio as the default device. Is there a way of have both my speakers active and my HDMI audio. I looked through all the post and saw some no sound issues that were not quite the same but none helped my. It is not too onerous to just change the default audio output when I want to watch recorded TV but I think there must be a solution to this. HP tech support says you can only have one active. I was wondering if I could have both active by adding a new sound card. I have PCI slots available.
Thanks in advance for any help

I have reached the same conclusion in the mean time. I have done a bit of investgation in to other grahics cards and am seeing some that show SPDIF connections from the card to the mother board. I was not familar with SPDIF but it did a little bit of sluething. It is of course a digitally enconded voice. I am guessing that in that case the mother board ( assuming it supports this hardware option) would use this output and be able to translate that digital audio to its other audio outputs. That is a lot of guessing of course. I think my "solution" might  be a whole new desktop - a rather drastic course of action! I was in the proceess of getting ready to upgrade this machine anyway with a new graphics card (which I will now return), go to Win 7, and maybe even a new digital TV reciever,  and I don't want to throw good money after bad anyway.

  • Airplay: Wireless desktop speakers?

I have a wonderful pair of Bowers & Wilkins MM-1 speakers on my desk, and I'm very happy with the sound quality, but I'm trying to see if I can diminish the growing number of cords on my desk.  So I'm wondering if anyone makes really good desktop speakers that are wireless.  Airplay, Ethernet, Bluetooth, whatever.
I know B&W makes the Zeppelin Air, and I'm going to check that out, but I'm not sure a single unit will sounds as good as the pair of speakers I now have.  In theory, I'd prefer a 2.0 or 2.1 system.  But if the Zepplein sounds really good, I'd go with it.
    Any recommendations?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that would be fine if my only audio need was to play iTunes through the speakers.  But I want these to be the speakers I use for everything that comes through my computer, from website audio to DVDs.  I don't think Airport Express hooked up to powered speakers will do that.

  • Pavillion 15 n097sa laptop. L and R audio coming through both speakers at same time.

Hi, so basically, i have just upgraded to this 15 n097sa laptop (new to me) from my old aspire, and it is sooo much better.
Only, I have just noticed that when either left or right sound is coming out of both speakers at once. i noticed it whils wearing headphones. the left definitely comes out of the left slightly more, and the right as well respectively, but they still come out of both speakers quite a lot.
To make that clearer, the left only channel is coming through both speakers at once, instead of just the left speaker. And the same for the right channel.
i have only done a real test on youtube stereo test videos, the same i tested on my old acer before, which came out of correct speakers.
i have a dts sound, whatever that is, and it could be down to simply changing the settings, but i don't think that's it.
Does anyone else have or have had this issue too?
I know i am a pc simpleton, but please go steady on me, ta.
    win 8.1 pro  .
please, and thank you very much indeed, Sofa.

    Hi there @SofaQueue
Welcome to the HP Support Forums! It is a great place to find the help you need, both from other users, HP experts and other support personnel.
I understand that you are having trouble with the audio balance on your notebook computer, and I am happy to help with this. First I would suggest reinstalling the audio driver.
Try this link which will automatically start the download of the driver to your notebook. You will then have to run the file to install it. Realtek High-Definition (HD) Audio Driver
If you are still having trouble, check through this page; there may be something within that could be useful.

  • Sample Rate 44.1 kHz creates Hum/Buzz in speakers

I noticed a quite hum in my speakers, Mackie MR8s, and cold not figure out what it was. So going through the menus in Logic Express 8 I found the "audio" under settings. Where it says sample rate I changed it to 48 kHz and the hum disappeared. I went to switch it back and I get a buzz, but only when the 44 kHz sample rate is chosen. Does any know why it would create a hum? Thanks.

It's more of a a real quite hiss than a hum. My battery backup was making them buzz so I've moved that across the room. Could it because of their close proximity to my imac or other electrical items on the other side of my wall in the other room. The hum doesn't come through on headphones or in recordings. Thanks.

  • Play through phone speakers when dock connected

Can I play through phone speakers when dock connected?  I bought a new case to mount my phone to my bike's handlebars.  To allow use of other attachments, the case has an internal dock connector.  I want to play music through the speakers while riding (rather than headphones), however, due to the cases internal dock connector, it seems I cannot do this.  Any suggestions?

    I would try in oreder:
    - Resetting the iPod:
Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restoring the iPod via iTunes.  First from backup and if problem persists, restore to factory defaults/new iPod.

  • Playing video AND audio through TV speakers using Mini Display to HDMI adapter

I have a late 2011 MBP and want to hear the sound of the videos I'm running on my MBP through the speakers of my LG HDTV.  I have used a Belkin Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter (model f2cd021eb) plugged in to my MBP with an HDMI cable running from it to my LG HDTV. The video shows on the tv, and sound plays thru the MBP speakers.  I have used an off-brand Mini DispalyPort to HDMI cable (without any adapter) - that is, it plugs directly into my Mini DisplayPort on my MBP and the HDMI port on my LG TV. The video shows on the tv, and sound plays thru the MBP speakers.
System Preference > Sound > Output, selected LG TV (type HDMI) and the note that displays is "Settings for the selected device: The selected device has no output controls".
I open Audio Midi Setup. It lists Built-in Mic (2 in/0 out), Built-in Input (2 in/0 out), Built-in Output (o in/2 out), HDMI (0 in/2 out). The Built-in Output is selected by default. The source is Headphones (Format 44100 Hz, 2ch-24bit integer, ch master far left, ch 1 and 2 far right with value of 1 for both dB of 0 for both).
Upon selecting HDMI, the source changes to LG TV (Format 48000 Hz, 2ch-24bit Interger, ch Master, 1, and 2 to far left and unavailable to adjust).
Upon selecting Configure Speakers, I click left front and right front and hear sound coming from the tv speakers just fine...loud and clear.
I'm deployed overseas and getting products through the mail is really really slow!!  So any insight you can offer would be great!!

I was wanting to do the same and was at the verge of following The Official Way (Apple dongle + HDMI male to male cable). But on the trip to the store, found a TechLink iWire TB male to HDMI male adapter cable for half the cost, bit the bullet and got it instead: http://www.techlink.uk.com/products/apple/iwires/iwires_mini_displayport_plug_to _hdmi_plug
First time use with a Hitachi TV was disconcerting. Used to the old VGA setup, plugged everything in (while the rest of the family was watching regular TV on the unit), fully expecting the Mac to recognize the external display and send the signal over. No go. Tried resetting the PRAM, rebooting the Mac, no joy. Was about ready to write the cable off as a bad POS, when in a flash of inspiration switched the TV's input over to its HDMI port.  Lo and behold, the Mac switched res and started sending sight and sound over at the TV's native capabilities. Did not need to fiddle with any adjustments at all. Sound was great, display crystalline clear. Wowed the folks.
And if I switched the TV to another input, the Mac would immediately disconnect and revert to its usual settings.
So yeah, the cable can be a culprit, but so can whatever's on the other end of the cable
