Group Policy Management Console crashes when you click the target domain KB 2928427
I have the Problems described in KB 292827 with Riverbed Steelhead WAN Optimizer configured as Active Directory Integrated mode enabled, on a Windows Server 2012 R2. The Hotfix in KB 292827 is only for Windows 2012 and Windows 8. Is there a Hotfix
for Windows 2012 R2 / Windows 8.1?
Hi,
Please understand that there is no hotfix for Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 on this issue now. As a workaround at this time, I suggest you’d better disable the application while modifying
GPOs in GPMC. Hope this hleps.

Group Policy Management Console Failes to open when one Domain Controller is powered down
Hi All,
This was an accidental discovery, but here's my dilemma. I have a site with 2 domain controllers(Windows 2008 R2), and if I shut down my second domain controller, when I try to open the Group Policy Management Console on the 1st domain controller,
it fails to open and I get the following error, "The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted" with 3 options to "retry", "choose another domain controller", or remove. If I go to chose another domain
controller and select the 1st domain controller it still fails. Unless the 2nd DC is turned on, I have no issues opening the GP management console. Not sure, why this is happening, I've done it in the pass without issue.
Any help would be appreciated.
ThanksWell it seems that some how the PDC emulator is set to be the 2nd DC instead of the 1st DC on the 1st DC which explains why the failure after the 2nd DC went down. Why or should I say how could the PDC get switched from the primary DC without human intervention.
Does the PDC automatically switch for any reason? -
WMI Filters Folder NOT Found in Group Policy Management Console.
We have a Small Business Server 2011 Standard Edition install that is Hosting a Domain that was migrated to it from Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition. All seems to be working. We have a few problems that we are trying to work on one at a time when this
issue was brought to light.
We were trying to push the installation of a client software via group policy and in the process to have it pushed by the server, we had to configure several wmi filters in the group policy management in the SBS 2011. We opened the console and found
that the WMI Filters Folder is nowhere to be found.
We would like to find out what can be the cause and resolution of this problem. I would like to find out how to get the WMI Filters folder back in the Management Console and be able to create the filters that will help us deploy the client software
we need to provide to our users using the group policies.
Has anyone experienced this problem. Can we just go into the group policy management console and create the object and then import the default filters into that object we created. The filters were exported from another sbs 2011 standard edition
install that has the wmi filters folder in the GPMC.
Need help on this situation. Have very little experience in troubleshooting GPO's and GPMC's issues.
Thank you
JFMHi,
>>I need to find out if there is a way to get the WMI Filters Object Folder back or find a way to recreate it.
Based on the description, we can use LDP.exe to check if the following object is missing in Active Directory:
CN=Windows2003Update, CN=DomainUpdates, CN=System, DC=domain, DC=com
Regarding how to use LDP.exe to view AD object, the following article can be referred to as reference.
How to Use Ldp.exe to View Entire Directory Tree and Locate the Microsoft Exchange Container
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/252335
If the object is missing, we can follow the solutions described in the following article to check if the object was deleted and we need to restore it if this is true.
Step 2: Restore a Deleted Active Directory Object
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd379509(v=ws.10).aspx
If the object is there, we can check if proper access permissions have been configured for it.
If the object is missing but not deleted, this may be related to the migration process. If this is true, we can ask for suggestions in the following SBS forum.
Small Business Server
https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home?forum=smallbusinessserver
In addition, regarding migrating Active Directory to SBS 2011 Standard, the following articles can be referred to for more information.

Safari Crashe when you click on toolbar after 10.4.5 upgrade
I've been having severe problems with Safari crashing when you click on the toolbar. If you try to click in the "google" box it crashes. If you click anywhere on the user interface that isn't a button (say to drag the window), it crashes. During my search of the forums, a lot of folks say that is was caused by third party extensions like Safari Enhancer. I don't have any of those installed.
I've since switched to using Firefox (still not the more stable program).
Thanks,
PaulI went back and installed back to panther. Did a complete wipe on a brand new hard drive. Everything was working great until the software update patched safari with its latest release. Now it won't even open. I'm going to uninstall safari and try again. This time with no software updates.

Why doesn't Skype not close when you click the X b...
I'd like to get some input as to why Skype does not close when you click the red X button on the top right corner but rather only gets minimized. It's frustrating and makes no sense at all. The only way to close Skype is to right click the icon in the tray and choose "Quit Skype."
I'd like to understand why this useless feature exists. It renders the minimize button ( - ) useless, which is only two squares away from the X button.
Please don't proceed to list other programs that do this (i.e. some antivirus software) as that was not what I asked. It's standard for programs to close when the X button is clicked, as will happen momentarily when I click the X button on my Chrome browser window when I'm done typing this quation. ThanksWhat he was talking about was setting it to ""run as administrator" in the shortcut/executable as you should know that would run the application in a true administrator mode (like Windows XP) vs. the default crippled administrators group in Windows. I personally have not had to do this since I have not run into the issue but for those that have, people claimed it has helped/resolved the issue. In regards to following UI interaction rules, it does as it actually closes the form. Skype doesn't send an additional closure to the resident system tray icon form because it's a memory resident communication program. Some programs give you that option, others don't. Geforce Experience is one of the latest programs I use, that doesn't. Nobody forces anything on you. If you feel your family is "forcing" something on you, you always have the option of "forcing" something on them or suggesting another method you prefer in order to stay in contact with you. In the end that's a family issue, not a Skype one.
If you want to close Skype down in one click you can do so using the provided shortcuts in the following thread. You can also assign those shortcuts hotkeys or assign them to a key on your keypboard/mouse using additional key mapping software to completely close Skype with the press of a single button.

I know this isn't really the right place to ask, but could someone explain why when I open Portal 2, that I got off steam and spent a whole day downloading, keeps crashing when I click the Campaign/Single Player mode. It Freezes and then crashes. Help!
I know this isn't really the right place to ask...
Uhm, why don't you go to the right place, then? There are several Steam/Portal forums out there... -
Can you have a DIAdem file embedded in a web app and then when you click the link to the DIAdem file it invokes DIAdem?
Hello JCN,
I will keep in touch with the current Applications Engineer who will be assisting you with this issue and update the forum with the status of the problem. I personally think that your best option would be to create a link that opens DIAdem and then runs a script to load the data from a predetermined file (Rather than a link to the file itself).

No longer see "Internet Explorer Maintenance" in Group Policy Management Console
I am trying to configure Internet Explorer favorites on a GPO that I have already constructed. I had already successfully created the GPO many months ago and wanted to go back and check on some things.
However in the GPMC when I navigate to User Configuration-->Policies-->Windows Settings, I no longer see "Internet Explorer Maintenance" listed. This is where I had previously configured Internet Explorer favorites.
I uninstalled and reinstalled GPM using these instructions
http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/how-to-install-the-group-policy-management-in-windows-7/ but this did not help.
Previously I had two Windows XP computers in the OU that this GPO was applied to. I had no problems at all configuring it and getting the rules and favorites to apply to these two computers. I just recently upgraded one of the computers to Windows
7 and used the same machine name for the computer. The computer gets some of the rules applied to it but not all. In particular the IE favorites are not being applied which led me to check the policy in the GPMC. However, as stated before
I cannot even see "Internet Explorer Maintenance" which has me confused on what to do next. Please help.Am 29.03.2013 14:15, schrieb FuFighter:

I'm too tired at the moment to check all you already did, so just let me
ask some further questions on that item:
This is a user or a computer item? If it is a user item and "run in
logged on users context" is checked, I believe it will fail, because a
non administrator cannot add all users favorites.
I'm unaware whether all users favorites works at all - never used it...
For further clarification, I'd enable GPP debug logging:

For example, when I create a message in my autoresponder service and want to attach an image a new window opens up so I can enter the details of the image (url, position, alt text). When I click the Save button, the information is captured but the window remains open and I have to manually close it.
Firefox used to close the window automatically.YES!! Thank you jscher2000! You sir are a legend. Thanks for this, changed the newtaburl in about:config, totally worked. Nope, never saw it happening! Speedy machine this one :P Yep, that change completely sorted the issue, just opened about 741 new tabs through the shortcut on my mouse just to celebrate. Thanks guys who helped, no thanks those who didn't.

The 'items' I refer to are the various articles in the blog 'The Corner'. The 'problem' occurs on any of NRO's blogs, i.e. 'Bench Memos', 'The Campaign Spot', etc.
The point is that if I, from the NRO home page, select 'the Corner', the back arrow key should point then to NRO home, no matter how far down into 'the Corner' I read. As it happens, however, every discrete item inside the blog posts its own pointer to the history and one ends up with multiple repetitive pointers to the Corner, rather than to one NRO home. All,
I haven't looked at that tutorial for quite a while but just gave it a quick look.
Further down in the tutorial, it directs you to set the value of P7_PREV_PAGE, under Add Functionality to Support Adding Multiple Issues Sequentially - have you done that? There is also a mention that there is more branching to be done - "The branch you just created is looking for a value in P7_PREV_PAGE. Since the page was not called from another page, the value has not been set. You need to fix that next." It goes on to have you define that value from other places.
Can you describe what you are doing when you get the error? There could be something missing from the tutorial. A way around it would be to create a default value for P7_PREV_PAGE so that if it is not set, a default page will be used.

CHM crashes when you click on links to PDFs/word on IE9 only
Here's the situation:
CHM file is created with a few links to baggage objects, which are PDF files. I have links in both topics and direct from the TOC.
On PCs with Internet Explorer 8 or less installed, users are able to click these links and the PDF file opens.
On PCs with Internet Explorer 9 installed, the CHM file crashes (and worse still, takes the application the help was launched from with it).
The error message is: Microsoft HTML Help Executable has stopped working [Close Program].
I have tried creating a small project with links to PDFs, and word docs, both as baggage files and just external links, and the same thing happens. I have tested on multiple PCs (even a Vista PC that was OK when it had IE8 and not OK when I upgraded it to IE). I am running the CHMs off my PC, not off network drives.
Has anyone else seen this? I would have thought other people would have noticed this if it was a generic problem with CHM files and IE9, but I can't see anyone mentioning it in this forum or anywhere else on google. Which makes me think it's something I've done wrong...
One last thing, I output the file as webhelp and the links worked fine.
Thanks in advance to anyone who has a suggestion here. Thanks for the suggestion. I had tried that and not seen anything unusual on my PC, which is running windows 7.
I've since done the following on a Windows Vista PC, using my test help file with 1 link to a PDF and 1 link to a word doc.
- PC originally running IE8. Links open without problem.
- PC upgraded to IE9. Help file crashes when clicking the links.
- Removed IE9 from PC. Links working again. Ran MJs diagnostics.
- Upgraded to IE9 again. Links not working. Ran MJs diagnostics.
Diagnostics were identical when IE8 and IE9 were installed on the PC. So I don't think this is going to point out where the problem is. Unless someone can tell me what I'm looking for specifically. All the HTML help settings were correct.
I should also mention I'm on Robohelp 8.0.2.208.
Lastly, I tried setting open in new page for the links to PDFs and word. This time, on IE9, they didn't crash the program, but they came up with a "navigation to the webpage was cancelled" message in IE9. On IE8, the links looked like they were opening, but didn't open at all.
I'd really like to know if anyone else with IE9 has had problems with links to baggage files. If there's anyone with IE9, and perfectly behaving CHM files, I'd love to compare notes - i.e. how do you refer to them. My links just look like this: <p><a href="test.docx">test</a></p>
Is it something I'm doing wrong?
Thanks! -
App Store Crashes When You Click Genius Tab
After updating to iOS 6, when I click on the Genius tab in the App Store app, the app crashes. Is there a workaround for this issue?
In cleaning out some files on Google Reader, I just read an article in TUAW about Feedback. While they may not answer your question directly, you can be sure that they WILL read your feedback and will certainly look into it. Try going to this link: http://www.apple.com/feedback/
I just submitted this question, and pointed out to the powers-that-be there, that other people are also having this problem, as evidenced by the feedback here. So maybe - just maybe, we'll start to get some action on this topic. adgray

Can't find setting for IE10 Compatibility View in Group Policy Management Console.
Hoping this is easy.
I'm trying to use the Group Policy setting for Compatibility View under Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Internet Explorer and it is not there.
The domain controllers are 2008 Standard SP2, so not R2. We are using ADMX files from a central store.
If I open the local GPEdit on my Windows 7 workstation I can see the setting for Compatibility View but cannot see it using RSAT or on the domain controllers themselves.
How do I get this setting to appear so I can use it?
Thank you.

Copy %windir%\policydefinitions from your win7 WS to the central store:
robocopy "%windir%\policydefinitions"
"\\%userdnsdomain%\sysvol\%userdnsdomain%\policies\policydefinitions" /s
