Group songs from one album together

How do you group together multiple songs all from one album? iTunes imports these as multiple albums all with the same name. It's driving me nuts, why oh why is iTunes nowhere near as good as Windows Media Player?

If you look at the getinfo page for these tracks. Is there an entry in the Album Artist Field - NOT the ARtist Field. You can put any value you like in here
eg Various Artist, Artist A and Friends whatever and then if this is the same accross all tracks they should display as one album.
iTunes 11 seems to have a far more rigorous interpretation of tags compared with iTunes 10 where you did not have to bother with Album Artist.

  • HT1473 how do i group songs from one album

Sometimes when dowloading a cd to Itunes instead of showing up as one album with all the songs it places the songs that have the artist featuring in another album by itself. how do i tell itunes these are all apart of the same album?

Generally all you need to do is fill in appropriate Album and Album Artist fields. For more details see my article on Grouping Tracks Into Albums, in particular the topic One album, too many covers and, if necessary, the two following sections.

how do i get all my songs of one album together under one album artwork  some are ok and some are all over the place

If the songs in your library are not all in the iTunes Music folder you can consolidate them (Choose File > Library > Consolidate Library). When you consolidate, any songs in the iTunes Library that are not in the iTunes Music Folder are copied to the Music Folder and the Library is updated to point to those new files. Files already in the iTunes Music Folder have no changes made to them: Consolidating your library - Windows

  • Is it possible to group songs from different albums?

Can I create a copilation ALBUM out of songs from different albums, which are already in the iTunes Library (I mean without changing the album name for each song) ? Or, if possible, without making duplicates. It sounds more like linking songs together in compilation albums. Kinda like creating playlists that are actually albums... compilations. Is it possible?

In iTunes each track can only be in one album. If you want the same song to appear in multiple albums you'll need to make copies. An album in iTunes is any collection of tracks with the same album name and the same album artist (or marked as a compilation). Track order within an album is goverened by disc & track numbers.

  • IPod will only play songs from one album

Help! I downloaded an album onto my iPod, and now my iPod will only play songs from that album. When I go to select songs from another album, my iPod skips over them like it is searching for something.

  • How do I keep songs from an album together when importing?

When I import music from a cd, often it is broken into pieces if there is a collaboration on that song. For example, Santana's Shaman album is almost all collaborations with various artists so it is imported as a huge number of separate albums.
How can I prevent this from happening when immporting cd's and how do I put them all together again?

That's what the "Album Artist" field is for.  The track artist can have all kinds of variations (especially with Santana!), but the Album artist should be "Santana" for all of the tracks and that will keep the album together.  If the Album Artist field is left blank, you will get the behavior you have described.
I usually answer "no" when iTunes prompts me to import the CD when it auto-detects one... then I edit the Album Artist (which is almost never automatically filled out), then I import the CD.
You can edit all of the CD tracks simultaneously by selecting all of the track, right clicking and selecting Get Info.  You can also add artwork at that point if you have specific artwork you want iTunes to use... I usually get mine from AlbumArtExchange.com.
If you don't edit the info before importing the CD tracks, you can sort by "date added" after importation to get all of the tracks you've already imported grouped together and edit the Album Artist field there.
You can see below that "Guitar Heaven" stays completely intact in all views even though there are many track artist variations.

  • How do I group songs under one album, please?

    OK, so I
iTunes works better than Windows media player for my set up with Windows 7 Ultimate .... BUT it 'took over' the Media Player library and put some tracks as separate entries - so, for example, I have one album of Rod Stewart in 6 different places, with tracks from the same album. I have tried everything I can think of, even deleting the whole album and starting again - frustratingly, same result. Can anyone help, please?

  • Grouping songs into one album that are featuring someone else

Trying to clean up my iTunes library.  Some on my albums that I have ripped to my iMac have songs on the same album, but feature one or more other artist.  I'd like to find out the easiest way to get those songs into the same album group that they are from.  I've done one so far and edited the artist to just the original album artist, but I'd like to be able to see who else is on the track if possible.  Sort of knitpicking but that's me, thanks!!!

Quick answer:  Select all the tracks on the album, File > get info, and either give them all a single "album artist", or check the "compilation" flag (as in https://discussions.apple.com/message/17670085).  You can leave the artist there. Album artist will force it to sort by that.
If these are from multiple-CD sets you may also need to enter the appropriate information in the disc number fields.

  • Songs from same album not grouped together.

    Hello,
I just received a new ipod nano (the new ones) as a gift and all though i love it i am having some troubles with Itunes 7,
the first problem is that iTunes does not group some songs from the same album together, I made sure that all the album details are the same but still I tunes separates certain songs from the album, In case I am not clear here is a link to a screen shoot:
    http://img369.imageshack.us/img369/188/ssngtud2.jpg
As you can see some songs from System of a downs album "Steal this album" are arranged as separate songs, how can I change this?
    A second problem I have encountered is with compilation specifically with classical music, ITunes slashes the 10 track album into 10 separate songs, although I marked them all as a part of a compilation and set the preferences to display compilations, screen shots;
    http://img86.imageshack.us/img86/2387/ndctt6.jpg
    1. Is there any way ITunes can display these tracks together?
    2. If I move this album to my IPod (after setting it to display compilations) will it show them together as one album?
Thanks for your help in advance

For your first problem, make absolutely certain that there are no hidden spaces at the end of the Artist or Album fields. Also check track number of and disk number of fields. Finally, and this may be most likely, make sure that you use the same Album Artist for each song (blank, or System of a Down).
For the second issue, make sure all songs on the album are marked as "Part of a Compilation", then sort your library as "Album by Artist" (you may need to click the Album header a few times to see that). The Compilations will then be bumped to the bottom of your library. On your iPod, turn Compilations ON to see similar grouping of compilations.

  • Why does my music from one album show up as two separate albums: one with all the songs in it, and another with two or three. Why is it that when i delete the incomplete album it takes the same songs out of the complete album also?

When I first imported music from my CDs onto my iTunes library, all the songs appeared, but those with the album artist and guest/additional artists they appeared in their own album under the same album name. After searching through iTunes help and support, I learned how to put all the songs under the same album (part of a compalition) and add the additional songs information, artwork, lyrics, etc. After getting all the music (imported from my CDs) onto the iTunes library and in their album. I synced my music onto my iPhone. (My iPhone is a 3GS)
Once the music was on my iPhone i noticed that the albums appeared in 2s again. One was the complete album with all the songs, song info, etc. together (solo tracks and/or one with multiple artists) and another album of the same name, artwork, etc. with 2-4 of the songs from that album. Since all I saw need for was to have the completed album on my iPhone, I deleted the album with only 2-4 of the songs. When I went back and selected the completed album, all the songs I had deleted from the incomplete album were also deleted from the completed album too! I just couldn't figure out why it did that and my my friends with iPods and iPhones said they didn't know what caused it either. So now I'm here with the idea how to fix this problem.
If anyone has a solution to this problem, please reply. It will be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure why this happens, but I found a workaround. Below the album title it will list the artist(s). The issue seems to happen when there are multiple artists. For example, an Album titled "Over the Sea to Skye" has The Chieftains and James Galway as artists. Some tracks (for whatever reason) will list only one of these and result in the playlist showing what appears to be multiple albums. You can click on the artists and it will highlight. Paste in what is appearing on the other "albums" and it will then show as one:
Hope that is somewhat clear enough to help. Doesn't fix whatever the issue is but it is a workaround. For me this is only happening with CD's that I have imported.

  • Songs from same album not listing as within one album

Okay, here's a problem that's kind of strange. I already owned an album, bought on CD, that I have imported into iTunes. I later wanted to make one of the songs into a ringtone for the iPhone, which you can only do with stuff bought from iTunes, so I purchased the song, figuring I would just add it into the album. I changed all of the information to be the exact same between the ones I'd imported and this song from iTunes, and it sorts correctly when sorted by "Artist," but if sorted by "Album by Artist," it moves the downloaded song to being from another album, though it's the exact same, and it Coverflow it also lists them as two seperate albums though they are not.
Is there a way to get iTunes to recognize that these tracks are from the same album or is this just an anoyance I will have to deal with?
    Thanks.

In short, there are two possibilities: either you didn't actually get the information identical, or iTunes is slightly confused. Both happen to me pretty regularly.
If you have iTunes keeping your music organized, there's an easy check: pick one of the songs, right click, select Show In Finder. Is your new purchased song in the same folder as the CD you imported? If not, the information is definitely different. The most recent time this happened to me, the imported CD had the "Compilation" box checked.
Next thing: select all of the songs from the album - the imported CD and the purchased song. Right click one of them, select Get Info (or choose Get Info from the File menu). The artist, album artist (if there is one), and the album title, should all be showing. If not, it means that one of those values isn't actually the same for all the tracks.
After that's all fixed up, it's time to blame iTunes. In that case, make a small change to the artist, album artist, and album name. I just add an X to the end of the name. Click OK, and hopefully now the tracks will all be grouped the way you expect. Get Info again and put the names back the way they belong.
    Good luck!

How do I stop iTunes from breaking out all the songs in one album into multiple albums when the artist has many collaborators on the different songs, for example Timbaland?  I want to just listen to the full album with all the songs, instead of having to play every song separately.

Hello,  I have songs that show they are "Waiting" for download from the cloud but they are greyed out.  Some songs in one album are done others in the same album will not download. It is not a time function because i have been working on this for weeks. I have allowed my compter to run for days and the songs are still not accessible.  I have a Match subscription and Match is working.  If I click on the "Genre" link the greyed out songs show that they are ready for download from the cloud but I cannot download them.  I have downloaded over 1500 other songs, so I am trying to understand what is going on here. I would appreciate any help anyone can give me.
    Thanks

I did think about that and if I have to I will do that, however there are about 50 songs. I have closed and reopened iTunes several times and I am sure that I have the latest version. It fails right away but I can click on the cloud download icon and download the song that it failed on ... therefore it is not that song "or any one song" causing the issue. Any ideas?
