Grouping by Artist

When I try to play back bt artist, it lists the artist several times.
How do I get it to play ALL the artist songs without having to select each one listed?

Generally the compilation tag is used when you want to keep all the songs grouped into the same folder rather than having all the songs written out to a folder for each artist.
So in other words, it isn't really meant to be used on a greatest hits album from a single arist, but instead on an album of many artists like "Hits of 1979" or something like that. You would then get one listing for "Hits of 1979" in your album list, but you wouldn't have 15 artists listed in the artist section each with only a single song under that artist. So if you import a few multi-artist compilations and do not have other stuff by those artists, this option helps keep your artist list from getting cluttered with a lot of artist names from those compilations.

  • Grouping various artists as one

    Hello all,
I have a question about my newly acquired iPod nano and iTunes.
I have several CD's of the same artist, but iTunes and therefor my iPod sees it as different artists because of small spelling differences.
For instance, if you browse for the artist J.J. Cale it appears 4 times written as J.J. Cale, J. J. Cale, JJ cale and J.J.Cale. This annoys me and I'd like to group all 4 as 1 artist. Does anyone know how to do this without editting every single song info (we're talking about a massive library here)?
    Thanks!

While you do have to manually edit the song information, it might be helpful to point out that you can edit multiple track information at once... if you highlight ALL of the tracks that need to have the same artist (click on the first track, hold the SHIFT key on your keyboard while clicking on the last track), and click File > Get Info, you'll be prompted to edit multiple track information. Say yes. Then, you only have to type the artist name once. When you click OK that artist name attaches to each track you had selected.
    Hope this is helpful.
    Good luck,

  • Deleting a group from "Artists"

I deleted a group I wanted to in Playlists from my iPod Nano, 4 GB, but I see that "they" are still in "Artists". I brought up my iPod screen and it isn't listed; how can I delete it from Artists ?
    iBook   Mac OS X (10.4)

Unless you use an additional keyboard command, deleting from a playlist doesn't completely remove the files, a playlist is just a set of shortcuts to songs in your Library. You need to delete the files from the Library, click on the Music icon and delete from the main list. You can fine a list of keyboard commands here: : iTunes Keyboard Shortcuts for OSX

  • Itune - How to Group Different Artist into Same Ablum

I have a collection type Album - has all different artist
I would like to the songs to show up in an single cover flow
so when i go to cover flow view - there is only 1 album not multiple
    right now
i have 7 album in cover flow for that collection -they all have same album name but different artist
could you please help me and give example while explaining it
i read other posts. but the explanation isn't clear
    thx a million

You need to select the 1st song, then right-clock on it. Select "Get Info" from the dropdown list. On the Info window that opens, select the "Information" tab. In the bottom right corner, you'll see a checkbox named "part of a compilation".
Left-click to put a checkmark in that box. Next, click on the "NEXT" button (at the bottom-center of the window), and add the checkmark to the next song in the list. Repeat that process for all songs in the compilation album.
Unfortunately, I haven't found a way to select that checkbox for multiple songs at once... You have to manually do it to each song. (I have lots of compilation albums, and it took a LONG TIME to fix all the info.
So far, I'm pretty unimpressed with the "Genres" that iTunes created when it imported my 180GB music collection. It's taken a couple of weeks to change all 38,000 songs into the Genre folders I have things sorted into in my computer.

  • Not able to find Group/singer in the "artist" list but only by album

After importing a cd, the artist name appears in my library, but then on my ipod I can only locate some groups/singer/artist by looking for the album.
Why aren't all of the artists appearing in my "artist" list on my ipod? THANKS MUCH!!

It could be that you have inadvertently imported these CDs into iTunes as part of a compilation. If so, the artists won't show in the artists menu on the iPod.
To check, highlight the tracks on one of the offending artists CDs in iTunes, right click and select "get info". This brings up a multiple song info window, and from there you can check if you have 'yes' in the box marked "part of a compilation".
If you have, select 'no' instead and click 'ok'. Do this with any CD that has this issue. This will alter the info in iTunes, and you should then connect your iPod and synchronize the changes.
The problem arises because the information contained on the Gracenote CD Data Base (where iTunes gets all it's album/artist/track info from), is sometimes incorrect. It can show CDs as compilations when in fact they are not.
You should also check that the songs have album name info in their ID tags.
See: Some songs don't don't show under artist on my iPod.

  • Genre Audiobook missing (or lack of grouping in Audiobook section)

I got my new ipod nano 3rd gen today and put some audiobooks on it. They show up in the Audiobook meny. Annoyingly enough each track on it's own, but I know that's how it is even if I wish that a way of grouping them by author and book would be implemented soon.
However, previously I've done (with my 2nd gen nano) instead is to chose Genre -> Audiobook and thus getting the grouping by artist and album (author and book), but now there is no Audiobook in the genre menu... How do I get the Audiobook genre to show? Or is it impossiple?

  • Sorting by ARTIST not the same in iPod and iTunes?

In iTunes/Windows, I insert a CD consisting of a compilation by various people as ARTIST='Various artists' and ALBUM ARTIST='whatever-singer'. Sorting by ARTIST shows the CD under the group 'Various artists', with each song corresponding to 'whatever-singer'. The iTunes library creates a folder for 'Various artists' with the CD name and all the songs inside.
Transfering to the iPod and selecting ARTIST, lists instead all the 'whatever-singer' as separate items, rather than the 'Various artists' name used in iTunes.
Any suggestion to make the iPod terminology compatible with iTunes?. Thanks

Mark it as a compilation then. It will show up as one album, at the end of coverflow but NOT under artists, unless you have a "regular" non compilation album by the artist. Unfortunately all of your, for example, Bryan Adams music would not be together - Albums in alphabetical order, compilations at the end. Another way to work around this would be to add the guests name to the individual song titles, such as "We're In Heaven (Feat. whoever)". This involves renaming the tracks, and deleting the "Featuring" name from the artist, but the album will only show up once. This is the most annoying thing about coverflow - an album is not a compilation because it has 2 guests on it - but the ipod thinks it is. My opinion is that if I would sort it with an artists other albums in my CD collection, I should be able to do so in my ipod...without creating 4 covers because of guests on an album. I really hope this is addressed in the future!

  • ITunes 10's Album by Artist column not good for assorted artist albums

If a given album has selections done by different groups or artists, iTunes will fragment the album and create as many little groups for it as there are different performers on the album. This feature became a big problem for me with an album of big band music with presumed many different groups represented that I have and had put onto iTunes. For a few of the selections, I was able to identify the band leader (the album came from an analogue medium, a reel-to-reel tape, that had no titles or artists information) and had these names entered into iTunes. With the old iTunes version, the album would be shown in one place with all the selections in order and with a few of them showing an artist name.
I found that some of the music files were misnamed and I wanted to add names to another group of generic file names. All these changes caused iTunes to report it couldn't find the songs and needed my help to locate them again. No trouble here, as I would expect nothing less and was familiar with this from other similar cases. What was an unpleasant surprise was that the selections with identified band leaders separated off from the anonymous group and from one another, based just on the names of these band leaders. I had to slowly scan through close to 1900 songs to find the all of the stray pieces of the album.
If I didn't find all the album titles with new file names, the files would had quietly remained not found and probably would have been deleted from the iPod. ITunes doesn't alert to unfound files at startup; one has to click each name for Get Info in order to get the dialogue for locating the file again.
Even if iTunes wouldn't keep all the pieces together (and I understand why it didn't), if the Next and Previous functions would allow me to step through all the tracks of such an album, I could get by, but this is not so either. Next and Previous navigate just to the physically adjacent songs, not the logical neighbors.

I'm not sure where you were putting in the band leader information - my guess is you used Album Artist instead of just plain Artist - but I think I answered this in your other post.

Yes, this is a pain. iTunes used to show these unfound tracks more readily. THere is a script that has been around or years that will find them, though. It's "FindDeadTracks" from this page:

That all depends on what column you've sorted your tracks by. I usually sort my library by Date Added, with new tracks at the top. A new CD I've imported would be at the top and all the tracks from it together. Very easy.
Other sort columns could also keep the tracks together so you could use Previous/Next.

  • How do I get my Music library songs in alphabetical order and not sorted by artist?

Curious how you can sort your songs by alphabetical order without them being grouped by artist? Having this problem on ipad and iPhone

Well as far as I can recall, I did nothing special at all when I synced my music to the iPad. I have very few downloaded/purchased songs on the device, but even the very few purchased songs that I have in the Music App are in alphabetical order. The only settings that can be changed on the iPad are in Settings>Music and I don't see anything in there that has any bearing in this. I have Group by Album Artist selected, but that doesn't change the alphabetical order if I toggle it off and on.

  • Compilations and various artists- Playing order on iPod

    Hi everyone.
I have a two-fold problem with my iPod Classic 160 GB:
I have several compilations of various artists that I grouped by "Artist"- being the title of the album (so it will show up in Albums), and the "Album Artists" being the names of the respective various artists. It plays fine- i.e. in the correct order in my iTunes when my iPod is connected to my Mac, but when I play it on my iPod (not connected to my Mac), my iPod plays the songs in alphabetical order by artists.
The other problem I have is that I have several albums in which artists cover other artists. I entered the "Artist" as the artist covering the tunes (for instance Richard Cheese)- so that it shows up under Artist in my iPod setlist, and the "Album Artist" as the original artists of the songs. Again- no problem in iTunes when iPod is connected- correct order. On my iPod, it alphabetizes the songs based on artist.
Is there any way to fix that so that, under both circumstances, the songs play in the correct order, while still being able to search "Artist" as the artist covering other artists and "Album" by the name of the compilation?
Thanks in advance for any info, and hopefully the questions made sense

Artist should be the name of the recording artist of each track. *Album Artist* should have the same for a whole album, so a compilation album typically records the *Album Artist* as *Various Artists*. Most iPods group tracks on Artist instead of Album Artist which causes problems when you have guest or featured artists... • ITunes duplicating artwork for same artist but different song.

iTunes is automatically adding artwork to another song of the same artist in my library. I import artwork for one track of an artist and iTunes applies that artwork to all tracks by the same artist. This is silly. They are all singles and I want each track to have the proper artwork.
I have tried deleting the duplicated artwork and adding its own but that doesnt help. I tried restarting iTunes as well.

Thanks for your help but its doesnt really apply to me.
Let me try to be more clear. I have 100 SINGLES that I have in an album that I named "1980 Top 100". I do this because I have 1981, 82, 83, 84..and so on.
Within this album I have a few artist with 2 or 3 singles. iTunes is automatically adding the artwork for "Air Supply - All Out Of Love" to "Air Supply - Lost In Love". I should be able to add a different artwork for each single an artist has within this album. However, I cannot seem to force iTunes to use the artwork I want for a track of the same artist.
THE REASON I BELIEVE THIS CAN BE FIXED:
From those 2 tracks by Air Supply, they each are showing different artwork in their info. Coverflow seems to be grouping the artists.
EDIT: In another album Im getting this:
CoverFlow is not grouping the artist but it is using the same artwork for both even though they each have their own separate artwork in the info...

  • Make songs appear under a different artist

I'm real anal about the way my songs are named. For example, I would like the songs by Genesis to show up under under Phil Collins.
I want the correct artist to appear when the song is played (i.e., "Genesis") but I want the song to appear under "Phil Collins" when I select him from the list. I've tried changing fields such as grouping, album artists, etc., but can't seem to find the magic bullet.
Renaming the songs is out of the question. I just want the songs to appear under the artist I choose.
Please help me. This is driving me crazy.

I don't think you read Chris's post correctly or didn't understand. Rt click on a track and do a "Get info". Then click on the info tab. The third text box down says Album Artist. If this information is filled in then the album would be filed under that artist. It will still appear in the library as The Artist not the Album Artist.
I've used this for a BB King album. I didn't want to call it a compilation but I didn't want to lose what was in the Artist field. With the latest version of itunes, using the album artist allowed me to keep that album and all its tracks in one location.
    Hope this helps.

  • Can Radio be limited only certain artists?

Is there a fast way to build a Radio station that ONLY plays music from the artists you list? No finding of "similar" artists (maybe it's just me, but they never seem to be bands I like, have to wonder what the similarities are based on!) -- basically, sometimes I just want to hear from one artist or a select group of artists. I could just build a playlist, but I wondered whether Radio does this.

    You're welcome. Glad to help.

  • ITunes API & querying lists of artists

I'm trying to build an interface similar to the iPod's, where you can group by artist, album, genre, etc. I can't seem to find any existing method in the SDK for doing this. I'm starting to suspect I'm gonna have to do this by querying the library XML file with some twisted XPath. Are there any other options?

Yeah, you're probably going to have to use the XML file.
Good luck....you seem to have a sense of 'twisted Xpath' humor...welsome to these boards!

    Hi cupboy1,
According to your description, you want to design your report as the screenshot your post and hide the detail row until select in top parent group. Right?
In this scenario, we can design the report as you have done by yourself, then delete the column (Label), but still keep the Label group, then add a column left of Disc, put the data field into appropriate textbox. You can get the same effect as your first
screenshot. And we can hide the detail rows and set them toggled by Artist. We have tested your case in our local environment. Here are steps and screenshots for your reference:
    1. Create a table. Drag Disc into textbox, add parent group with header (group on Label) for Disc, add parent group with header (group on Artist) for Label.
    2. Delete the column Label, add a column left of Disc.
    3. Right click on detail rows, select Row Visibility. Set hide and toggled by Artist.
    4. Save and preview. It looks like below:
    Reference:
Row Visibility Dialog Box (Report Builder)
If you have any question, please feel free to ask.
    Best Regards,
