Grouping Classical recordings

I want to import my extensive CD collection into iTunes. I noticed looking at classical CDs offered for purchase at the iTunes store that a number of disks have a triangle shown at the start of the Name column of the CD track descriptions. If you click the triangle, it hides/unhides all of the movements in that particular work.
How do I get my imported CD to group movements together like that, just as it does it in the store? It is exactly what I want to do, but hours of reading have not helped figure out how to do this!

TroyTK,
I'm afraid it appears that functionality is unfortunately not available for the user's library as it is for the iTunes Store library. What Chris CA is referring to is the ability to group the tracks in such a way that an entire work plays (as opposed to the individual tracks or movements or sections of an entire work) should you wish to shuffle the playback order. FYI if you want to do this, you have to tell iTunes to shuffle playback by group. However, this does not answer your actual question.
This is not a Windows or Mac issue, it appears to be an iTunes limitation:

  • Grouping classical music movements

Is there a way to group a classical pieces' movements together in the library so first movement is always played first in shuffle mode and the subsequent movements (i.e. 2nd, 3rd, and/or 4th) would be played in order? In other words, make the mini think that the 4 separate movements are really just one piece of music?

Do this BEFORE you import the CD.
Put the CD in. Click on the CD in iTunes SOurce.
Select the tracks you want linked, go to Advanced menu and select Join CD Tracks.
This basically makes them one song file.
Gotta do this with Heatbreaker & Livin' Lovin' (She's Just a Woman).

  • Punctuation for non-English artists (classical recordings)

Although for a good deal of my CDs the data has been correctly recorded by Gracenotes, there are times when the artists' names are not included. Just for completeness it would be good to include the correct characters with graves, circumflexes etc. I notice that previously supplied information usually includes the punctuation. There seems not to be any reference in the menu bar of iTunes to enable me to do it. Can anyone provide a remedy please?
If the solution is to use two key strokes with, for example, the option key first, where can I find a list of punctuation marks and the corresponding key strokes required for the various marks?
And thank you for the provider of the solution to my previous question on shuffling within genres! Excellent.

    hi aussiechris!
i think it's only fair to warn you that the last Mac OS i ever used was a 7.x.
but be that as it may, wiser heads than mine say that the language capabilities of your itunes should be the same as your Mac OS:

  • Classical music organisation

My carefully organised classical music collection on my iPhone is now impossible to navigate after updating to iOS5. I know I'm not the first to feel that iTunes wasn't designed with classical music listeners in mind and thankfully enough fellow sufferers were generous enough to post suggestions up to get around that, but iOS5 appears to have rendered them a waste of time. Can't say I feel too happy about re-categorising loads of music just to be able to easily access it on my iPhone. Think I'll lave my iPod running iOS4 unless anyone has any other bright ideas.

Thanks to Mike and Lance for the replies. I had seen those four videos listed. Unfortunately, only the Lang Lang is a classical music video. Andre Rieu plays mostly "New Age" nonsense and the "East Village Opera Company" is -- I don't know what -- jazz-rock fusion, maybe. I like J-R fusion mind you, but I'm looking for classical recordings in this instance.

  • IPod classic sound quality issues

    Hi guys,
I understand probably it's too much early to discuss this topic but anyway I try to ask.
In order to the release of the new model (yesterday's event in USA)of the classic, anybody has any news about the sound quality complaints arised in the previous months?
I mean, anybody knows if the quality sound problems, due to the change of the sound micro-chip, have been solved in the new modelMany thanks in advance for the help.

Excellent question, the answer to which I eagerly await. If the sound quality improves, I might purchase a 120GB, otherwise, there are now alternatives by competitors with 120GB capacity, similar form factors, built in FM radio, subscription music services, and wireless sync of the music library for the same price as Apple's 120GB. They don't have the sound stage issue as the 160GB Classic. There is even a 240GB model being offered by a competitor.
Too bad Apple didn't release a 240GB Ipod classic. Toshiba, Apple's hard drive manufacturer, announced a 240GB 1.8" drive on 9/9, coincident with the Apple Ipod announcements. I have a large and growing library of classical recordings as I explore the classical catalog, as well as many Podcasts. I could really use the space! I've input this request on Apple's Ipod feedback page and suggest that any like minded customers do the same.

  • ITunes has skips in playback for classical music

After importing a CD into iTunes, there seem to be skips in the playback. This only happens with my classical music CDs. I've tried changing import settings such as the encoder (from aac to aiff) and turning error correction on and off. It also happens when the songs are played using quicktime. Anyone know what the problem is and if there is a solution?
    Thanks!

    Thanks Dan Clark3,
Currently am ripping to the internal drive. I rip at 320 kpbs when using the AAC format, 16 bit when doing AIFF. Sample rates are 44.1. It's interesting that it doesn't happen with non-classical recordings. But, I tried ripping on another computer I own (powermac g4 running OS X 10.3.9 at the same rates and everything was fine. It must be the drive. I found out I cannot burn CDs anymore on this particular machine, so problem solved I guess.
I remember having this problem when I burned CDs of recordings I made in college. Always with the skipping sounds; but I chalked it up to the speed of the computer.
Let me know how if anything is fixed by ripping to the internal drive...

  • Classical Music Videos in the iTunes Store?

In Europe, classical music videos are (or were a few years back) often shown on television. Mostly the performances were chamber music and they were filmed in beautiful locations -- baroque churches, castles, palaces, for example.
I know that there are classical music videos (at least one) in the iTunes Store because I stumbled upon a video performance of the Hungarian Rhapsody #2 played by Lang Lang.
Is there a secret to searching for videos of classical performances in the iTunes Store? I've tried everything I can think of, to no avail.
    Thanks!

  • Organizing recordings? possible?

like others have mentioned, the new fios tv 1.9 update is horrible. that's not a matter of hating change, it's just a really bad update, kinda like Windows ME. anyways, it's not likely verizon is going to do anything about it any time soon so that means suffering with it so...
one thing i noticed is that the dvr recordings are no longer sorted. they all have been titled as "recurring recording." i have to scroll through each to figure out which is which. any way to set it back so that it groups like recordings? i've searched through the settings and haven't seen anything. i've tried googling, but not sure which search terms would be best. so far i haven't found the answer online. telling me to record by "series" is not going to work on shows that do not follow the guide's timeline. the guide doesn't always use the consistently right name either. hence, creating manual recordings is the best method...
    thanks in advance

  • Disappointed with errors in classical music track metadata

I recently purchased Spotify Premium and, as a classical music fan, have been greatly enjoying the excellent sound quality and ad-free service. However, I have one big issue with Spotify's content: Several classical recordings I regularly listen to are incorrectly titled, or the recordings themselves just cut off after 20 seconds (ie the track itself is only 20 seconds long) when the full track should be a few minutes long. I have submitted feedback forms multiple times with no apparent action taken. Here are a few examples of this: The first 1-2 tracks of each cantata in this album (https://open.spotify.com/track/2MMkxPJe4AiiO3Vx7Eek04) are truncated. You can hear that in the track that I'm linking to -- it's only 22 seconds long but the piece has barely started. This album is completely, entirely mislabled. https://open.spotify.com/track/6QwUCTNHMqdgB5q7PJoSh5 . The first 6 tracks are all Suite No. 1, and instead they're labeled as 6 entirely separate Suites. It appears that this is a problem with the CD metadata, as it's also happening on the Amazon listings I can find. Here are the correct titles for the first 6 tracks:
Suite No. 1 in G Major: Preludium
Suite No. 1 in G Major: Allemande
Suite No. 1 in G Major: Courante
Suite No. 1 in G Major: Sarabande
Suite No. 1 in G Major: Menuetto
Suite No. 1 in G Major: Gigue
This particular CD also has a duplicate listing which is also mislabeled. (https://open.spotify.com/track/42OxCbovuegKeLtR3Pv2Iw)These are actually two of my favorite albums, so this is really impacting my enjoyment of Spotify's premiums service. Thanks!

    Hey
    That feature is still there.
Try a clean reinstall of Spotify to see if that fixes the problem.
First uninstall Spotify and then delete these folders if they exist:
    C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Spotify
    and C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Local\Spotify
    After that reinstall Spotify
If you can't find the folder, try this:
Uninstall Spotify: Start > Control Panel > Programs / Uninstall a Program > Spotify
Find your AppData folder and delete all Spotify data.
Start, run, type: %appdata% and hit enter
You probably see 4 folders; enter each and see if they contain a folder called Spotify. Delete the entire Spotify folder.
Restart your computer at this point.
    Reinstall Spotify (download)

  • Where to purchase dowloadable classical music?

I was looking for a particular thirty or forty year old recording of a Beethoven symphony today and it's not available at iTunes.
Any suggestions for alternative legitimate downloadable sites that sell music that I can import into iTunes?
    Thank you.

Thank you for the suggestion. Actually, I began collecting CDs more than 20 years ago and have a collection of close to 1,000 all of which have been ripped into iTunes using Apple Lossless encoding. (~200 GB)
In iTunes I have four recordings of the Beethoven sixth symphony and was comparing the styles today of the different conductors. I remember hearing Erich Leinsdorf conduct it and wanted to hear his recording of it. I’ve become so used to the responsiveness of the Internet to get things “when I want them,” I didn’t realize how difficult it is to find classical recordings for download.
    Thanks again.

  • IPod volume needs to be more consistent and louder. Ideas anyone?

I am really impressed with the revolutionary achievement of Apple's iPod. Yet, I'm bothered by the difficulty of managing its volume.
Even with Sound Check turned on, there's quite a bit of discrepancy between the volume of older or classical recordings and newer, pop-rock songs purchased from the iTunes Store. I purchased and tried the "iVolume" shareware recommended in other discussions, but it has no effect on the "Protected" music files from the iTunes Store. The best I've been able to do is adjust individual songs with the volume tab in the Get Info window, and that's tedious and hit-or-miss, especially without some kind of volume meter.
Then, ever since an iTunes update introduced a volume limiter (to protect the eardrums of those headset users too reckless to care for themselves), I can't raise the volume of my iPod to match my car radio. Switching from the iPod to the radio produces a loud radio blast that hurts MY eardrums!
Has anyone discovered a fix for these problems?
    Thanks.

John, I've been there and done that. Allow me to repeat what I said in my question: turning on Sound Check does not resolve the issue.
Perhaps it works for you -- if all your music is within the same genre or of about the same age. But I have a somewhat eclectic library -- Pop, Rock, Country, Classical, Oldies, New Age, Easy Listening, Big Band, Soundtracks, etc., etc. With this mix, Sound Check has minimal effect.
Moreover, I still have the problem of being unable to set the main volume level high enough to be compatible with the car radio. This was not a problem with earlier versions of iTunes. It is likely that a code exists to unwrite the code that introduced the volume limitation. I'm hoping that someone can tell me how to do that.
Thanks, though, for submitting your suggestion. It probably will be helpful to others reading this thread.

  • IMIC - how the **** does it work?

I've read the posts regarding this tricky little beast but cant get a signal through on my mac. I've followed all the offered advice on settings and levels, noted the "counter-intuitive" button on the gadget itself, used garageband, audacity, toast, peak and final vinyl and I even got to the point where I cut off the phono plugs and stuck the bare wires into the speaker outlets - at least that got a connection, but obviously not much good for sound quality!
Do you think that the aux outlets on my hifi dont work? Unfortunately my other, newer, hifi doesn't have aux outlets - is there any other way of making a connection or any other way of geting a couple of hundred cds - mostly deleted classical recordings - zapped onto my mac's hard drive? I've spent alot of time on this, so any help would be welcome.

Yes...I had been working through the night on my dissertation, but that's no excuse, I really didn't deserve any responses for a stupid slip of the keyboard like that - of course I meant cassettes! I really have checked all avenues suggested with my hifi and borrowed a second one with aux and still no success. So I'll buy another of those pesky little imics - unless there's something better on the market. It breaks my heart to see those now unobtainable recordings just sitting there without any possibility of re-editing them to bring them up to modern standards...

  • Thumbnail Image

Hello Everyone and thanks for your help in advance.  I am new to creating Flash movies.  I have used the improt video wizard to create some videos although not very professional looking.  ON the video posted on this site:
    http://theacegroupclassic.com/videos/the-first-tee-s-katie-mclaughlin-experiences-the-ace- group-classic-up-close
There is a video that has a thumbnail preview of the movie.  How does one create this as I cannot see how to do this with the improt video wizard.  I assume it is a parameter of the player, but can't really see how to reference it or set it.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the help.  I found what I was looking for at:
    http://monkeyflash.com/tutorials/poster-frame-for-flash-video/
Seems to work pretty well.  I was wondering if there is some type of component or add-on available the could automate the process?  Do you know of any?  What is the preview parameter of the playback control used for?  Seems like it doens't do anything at runtime.
    Thanks again for the help.

I Have a class 'Gui' which is used to display the current recording and i am trying to use the class 'addframe' to give the option to add a CD or Digital type of recording to the manager class. i want to use a dialogue box to take input for the attributes of the recording and then to be able to delete the current recording using the delete button on the gui class. However i am now well and truly stuck and any advice would be much appreciated

I am not going to scroll through your code but let me make some suggestions.
*CD or Digital implies (to me, anyway) that radio buttons would work well as selectors.
*I would enter attributes of a recording in individual text boxes: one for artist, one for producer, and so on.
*If you have a container of recordings, there is no need to delete the current reference.  Simply replace the
the var that points to it with a new instance of the recording.
*Instead of posting lots of code, try posting a small self-contained example.

  • 'Natural' Track Or

There are various earlier posts on this topic re other players and I wonder therefore whether it is a generic issue with all MP3 players, but just in case there is more recent knowledge, please bear with me if I am repeating what is obvious or already answered. When transferring tracks from an album to my Zen V, the natural order of the tracks is lost and alpha order takes its place. For some CDs this is not an issue but for li've recordings and multi-movement classical recordings, this is not acceptable,? I can see why alpha order applies, but I would have thought that the need to preserve the natural order of the source material was so fundamental a requirement that it ranks up there with the provision of?a volume control, on/off switch etc. Do audio books get loaded with the chapters jumbled? Please tell me there is a workaround or a software pacth for this available or planned, and that?I will not, having ripped the CDs to the creatri've media player, have to laboriously rename all the tracks to include 00, 0, 02 etc at the beginning of the name,? Again, I undertand the logic of the workaround, but the need to do it is just too bizarre for words

Call me crazy, but my friends Zen V Plus is doing the opposit of what all here describe. And its driving us crazy. It does NOT play in track title order such as a.wma, b.wma, c.wma, 2a.wma, 2b, 2c. etc. The track titles represent the disk number of the book and the letter is the track order on the that disk. So aphabetically, the book would play in order even if there were hundreds of files in that one folder.
INSTEAD it is playing in order of "tracks" in the tag. Each of the book's 9 CDs has a track one, a track two etc. It is not reflected in the file name, but it does say , 2, 3 etc in the Tag field. So the player instead play a, 2a, 3a ... 9a, then b, 2b ... 9b, etc.
We have listened to books on the CZNano and Nano Plus and they play correctly, that is alphabatized by track name. Can someone tell me how to make his V Plus work that way. If I can't do this I would have to edit literally hundreds of tracks by hand, calculating how many tracks in totality of the 9 CDs in order to get them to play in the proper order.
    Thanks
    Mike
