Grouping Movies on Apple TV

I have a number of Movies that I have loaded into iTunes from a vacation in Norway.
When they get synced to the Apple TV they appear in the long alphabetical list of movies (which is getting quite long).
Is there a way of grouping them in iTunes so that when the appear on the Apple TV you get sub menus (like it works on TV Shows).
I would like a 'Norway' item in the Movies list, once selected I would then see all my Norway movies.
I have tried giving them the same Artist Name, Album Name, Show Name etc, etc, but I can't seem to get the items to group together.
Any ideas?
Ian

Sorry but Playlists are not supported in the 'Movies' part of the Apple TV.
All you get is one great long list of movies, there is no way to group them (you can in TV shows)
What I have done is rename the movies to have grouping as part of the name e.g.
Norway - Begen
Norway - Tromso
Norway - Trondhiem
At least that way they all appear together in the list

  • Apple TV grouping movies/TV shows

    Hi,
We recently bought a new Apple TV and I am trying to group movies like Harry Potter and TV programs into one folder. I have researched this online and got a hint that I should select the group of movies I want and command I and under the video tab and show line I entered what I wanted it to show. When I re-launched my Apple TV the folder isnt there. Also when I go back into the video tab the show button has now un selected itself. No other method has shown up. I hope this can be done. Any information would really help. Thankyou.

The playlists would be in the movie section, not in music.
Check you have video playlists enabled in settings.
Yes I'm disappointed there is no grouping of movies, with my home movies I have over a thousand movies and the list is too long without grouping, I'm also disappointed that TV shows are listed in groups of series instead of shows as was the case on the Apple TV 1, I have 19 series of one show and the list of TV shows is as awkward as movies.

  • Home Movies to Apple TV Format ?

I had 67 reels of 8mm film spanning 25 years scanned in which created about 4.5 hours of video. I used iMovie and iDVD to create 3 DVDs with about 1.5 hours of video on each. I have chapters for every different part of the films resulting in about 90 chapters over 3 DVDs. Now I want all this content in iTunes and available in Apple TV. I'm not sure the best format so I'm looking for recommendations before I spend 672 hours converting these. So far I could:
    1) Put all 4.5 hours into one movie and have 90 chapters. I think this would be hard to find the chapters that I want using the current Apple TV software, and one large file might be harder to manage.
    2) Split the movie up into 90 individual movies by chapter. This would make finding a chapter very easy since it would be the title of the movie. Having 90 movies in the Apple TV movie section would be really bad since Apple TV can't currently group movies.
    3) Break the movies up into say three movies, with about 30 chapters each. This seams like a crappy compromise.
    4) I could have 90 movies, one per chapter, like option #2, but I could make them TV shows and episodes. That way with the current Apple TV software I could group them all as 90 episodes under one TV show which is easier to manage. I sort of liked this but I could not get my sample movies to show up as iTunes as TV shows even after changing the metadata to say they were TV shows. Am I missing something here ?
Has anybody done this or can you offer any suggestions ?

I wouldn't worry about it. many people are concerned about the resolution without giving a thought to datarate. Your tv is limited to the bitrate it can play, at a fixed bitrate a 1280 x 720 movie will have less info per pixel (macroblock-technically) than a 960 x 540 so whilst there are more pixels in 1280 x 720 those in the 960 x 540 movie are higher quality and there is little difference, indeed my tests generally show 960 x 540 to be slightly better.
You could reduce the frame rate of 1280 x 720 to allow it to play on the tv, but this will likely introduce jittery motion.

  • How to "group" movies

Hi, in the past I used to "group" movies with a specific item on iTunes (Program name), doing so watching with my Apple TV 1G they were rendered as "grouped" on the list, let me to explain: suppose to have three movies of "Toy Story" (1, 2 and 3), using that field in iTunes with the name " Toy Story" on Apple TV 1G I had a single movie title " Toy Story" with a > and clicking on it I can select one of the three movies.
This was very useful to limit the large number of movies into a specific genre...anyway this don't work anymore on my Apple TV 2G that took the place onto my previous one (1G).
I don't know if the problem is about 2G or to iTunes version so I'm asking here hoping to have a reply.
Anyone could make a test and let me know if I have to change something ?
    Thanks, best regards.
    Roberto.

Unfortunately there is nothing you can do about it, yes it's very frustrating and represents one of a handful of features the Apple TV 1 had that the 2 doesn't. Not that it's important but it's not just limited to the Apple TV, all iOS devices are afflicted by this. Whether or not it can be achieved under iOS I don't know.

With the newest Airport firmware (7.6.1), it seems I should be able to do this.
Really? I need to check that out!
You should certainly be able to add content by reference to itunes from such a disk (even before the update) - so long as itunes knows the location of the file (set Preferences not to copy to local library when adding the media) it will stream it to AppleTV if the disk is available.
I hope you're right, but I'd be surprised if current Extremes can be upgarded to provide a full Home Sharing service - marvellous if they can but I'd be surprised as i've long said we need an Apple media server either based on TC or AE to do this kind of thing.

    Did you try Parental Controls?
Apple TV: Understanding Restrictions (parental controls) - Apple Support
See if that does the trick: I think there's a way for you to request a password for purchases, but still be logged in.

  • HT1390 I've rented & downloaded a movie on my computer in itunes, but it does not show up on my Apple TV.  Everything else shows up on Apple TV, including my computer's movie library.  When I click on the movie in Apple TV it says I've already rented it.

Unfortunately I have to if I download it on my computer.  I have rented itunes movies before directly using the Apple TV and it worked just fine and I could stay in the living room.  Without clicking that icon on my computer, there was no way to watch it.

  • I purchased a movie on apple tv (via itunes, I assume...). I clicked "download available purchases" on my pc, but it's not showing up. I don't have enought space on icloud to store the movie and I refuse to pay for more storage. Any ideas?

I purchased a movie on apple tv. I then went to my pc and clicked "check for available downloads", but the movie is not there. I don't have enough storage to put the movie on icloud, and i refuse to pay for more storage to move something that i already paid for. any suggestions?

It looks like the answer is to log out of iTunes and then back in.  That allowed Rentals to show up in my Movies Library.  I rebooted about three times which didn't work.  I closed the application and restarted it many times which didn't work.
The solution was to log out of my username and then back in.  That worked.

  • How to prevent movies on Apple TV from disappearing?

I used to be able to see all of my movies on Apple TV via home sharing.  Lately, they keep disappearing.  The only remedy i have found is to go into iTunes and "get Info" one by one on each movie and then it reappears on Apple TV.  I don't change a thing.  The simple action of "get Info" is enough.  Anybody have a suggestion on a better way to resolve?  I don't think going throiugh several hundred movies one by one is a great solution.

BTW - i dont think this has anything to do with it but i will share that all the movies reside on asynology NAS.  The reason i doubt that the NAS has anything to do with the issue, i can paly any of them on iTunes with no problems.  And yes, all of them are labeled with the media type = 'Movie'
Thanks in advance for any help offered.

The idea of storing songs, movies and photographs on the ATV is to allow the end-user to turn off their computer and just use the device like a stereo/video component.
Ah! Of course... I wasn't even considering this b/c I'm one of these people who almost never has his computer off b/c I work from home and also do a lot of web surfing, etc. but obviously many many people have the computer shut off much more often than it is on.
So, alright. I see why the hard drive is there... it just seems so tempting for it to be able to be more of a stand alone device, more like another computer with iTunes on it rather than like a big iPod that sits under my TV. I guess I'll file that away in my tech wish list...
