Grouping music

In iTunes, I thought the area Grouping on the song info window, would help on organising music also in Windows Explorer. I thought the music with the same group field would be stored in the same folder when I click Consolidate Library.
But I was wrong. It not affects organisation folders on Windows Explorer.
I was wondering: Can I put these folders together manually on the iTunes Music Folder? Will it result on a error?
Could anyone tell me more details about the Grouping feature?

PC   Windows XP

Yeah,I've realized about reassociate music links manually, but I'm afraid iTunes could create another folder by Artist of the grouping on my next "consolidate library".
About the grouping feature:
I've already made a search before posting, and repeated after your answer, but i still haven't found anything related (check it out: http://search.info.apple.com/?asq=&as_epq=Grouping&as_oq=&as_eq=&btnG=Search&lr=langen&kword=kituneswin&type=&Submit=Search)
Actually, I've been searching a lot and I see it is not a very explained feature, on Apple site and outside it.

Are there pepes out there using ipads to make group music with children who have profound and multiple learning difficulties? I am and I'd love to share the ideas.
I am the music teacher in a  Special school in London UK currently working with Drake Music who are a charity that go into schools to enable music making through music technology. Our purpose is to enable a group of 7 children who have profound and multiple learning difficulties to play instruments on the ipads or through the soundbeam and to be able to play and jam together with me underscoring on the guitar. We're having a lot of fun and we're all learning a lot about what can be achieved using the amazing ipad technology. If you're doing a similar project I'd love to hear from you and we can swap notes!

See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
You can use iTunes to easily manage multiple devices by having each sync with selected playlists. I don't personally have any recommendations for other software but perhaps others might.

  • Group music feature in iTunes vs shuffle play in ATV2

    Hi everyone,
I recently discovered the "group" feature in iTunes, that allows to group separete parts of a sonata or symphony, for example, in order to play them together when using the shuffle mode. All this works perfectly in iTunes (latest version).
Now, when I use the Shuffle mode in the AT2... well, the AT2 seems not recognize that some of my music is grouped. It just plays the music as if nothing was not grouped.
Maybe this is normal? Or not?
    Thanks in advance...
    Mathieu.

I'm not sure that's gonna work; I've got an old iPod 60, and I'm pretty sure you can only shuffle the main library on my iPod, not individual playlists. I have no idea why this is happening. I just opened iTunes and clicked on another playlist that was shuffled, and turned shuffle off. The songs went back to their original order. Then, I shuffled that playlist again, and the songs were placed in a random order. This problem seems to be specific to only a few playlists [naturally, the ones I want to shuffle]. Any ideas?

Thank you! That's been driving me crazy. I have one artist with only 2 videos. I've tried re-valuing the artist name, removing from the iPhone, putting them back... Now I just need to find another video.

  • Does not group music by album

If I try to sort the music on my ipad by album and the album is from various artists it shows it as various albums intead of just one, any suggestion??

Make sure these missing artists don't have the "Part of a compilation" option ticked for each of its track. You can locate this setting by right -> clicking on a track and choosing Get Info and then clicking the Info tab.
Then sync the updated changes to your iPod.

  • HT6119 Music by the same group in the US and Australia.

Why would some of a groups music be avaliable in the US and some only avaliable in Australia?

Because they haven't granted Apple permission to sell the remainder there, or a glitch caused it to disappear from the iTunes Store servers. Try contacting them.

  • Organising classical music

I started to write this as a response to somebody else's query, but then I thought no, I'm asking for general guidance on the best way to organise classical music to be listened to on my Mac and on my iPod.
I know that classical music lovers are a (threatened) minority, but oh, how I wish Apple would heed these regular sounds of anguish from us.
    *What we need*
The 'Song' is an almost meaningless concept when organising classical music; 'Artist' is not much better.
Classical music fans may want to:
    1. sort by composer
    2. within composer, possibly sort by type (eg symphony)
    3. within type, sort by work (eg Symphony 1)
    4. within work sort by movement.
    *Nested folders?*
A pretty obvious case for nested folders? (Not to mention having a clear consistent way to order and group movements.)
Yes - provided you dont have an iPod.
Thus I can have a folder 'Beethoven', within that I have a folder 'Symphonies' and within that I can have a playlist 'Symphony 5' ( actually two playlists for my two different recordings, otherwise I risk hearing the first movement twice before moving to the second movement). To ensure the movements are played in order, I have to ensure they are listed in the right order in Names (ie have 1,2,3,4 in the title).
This cludge sems to work in ITunes (although how nice it would be if Names and Albums were replaced by something a bit more akin to the world of classical music, and how nice it would be if one could have an Opus field.
*Not if you have an iPod*
But then this scheme falls apart if I sync with my iPod, which can't handle nested folders.
I quote from my message of 21 October 2006:
+... is there any sign of Apple introducing nested folders for the iPod (as it did with iTunes) and if not is there any manageable workaround for organising large collections of music?+
If you have a playlist for every symphony within a folder called Symphonies within Beethoven, you end up with at least nine playlists to scroll through! (Imagine the effect on my 400+ Bach items.)
I have found the only two useable viewing methods on the ipod are Playlists and Composers and both have serious problems. This is how they seem to work:
    Under Playlists on the iPod:
If in iTunes, you have a playlist Symphony 1, within a folder Symphonies, within a folder Beethoven,
on your iPod there will be an item for each playlist, ie lines for each of the nine symphonies And if you select one, you will get the four movements of that symphony.
If you had made a playlist Beethoven Symphonies, there would be just one item in the playlist - but then once selected there would be all the movements of all the symphonies.
    Under Composers on the iPod,
everything by Beethoven is listed, with a line per movement! Things are better if you have sussed (as I did not) that if the Album name for All the movements of Symphony 1 was exactly the same, eg 'Beethoven: Symphony 1', then this particular item appears once in the list.
    *So, what am I doing?*
When not cursing Apple, I have already grouped music in folders by composer/broad category of music (in the case of the main composers) and under one playlist for minor composers (ie ones which I dont have much music for).
I'm painfully renaming every Name of every piece so that the movements appear in the correct order.
I'm painfully renaming the Album name of each piece so that all movements have exactly the same Album name (starting with 'Composername: )
(By the way I tried and abandoned some people's strategies involving calling Composers 'Artists' and vice versa. Too messy, and besides, I do from time to time download the metadata from Gracenote CDDB - deeply flawed though it is - and don't want to have to do more editing than necessary.
So, for example, for the first movement of one recording of Beethoven's Symphony Number 1 I have the following:
Name-- Symphony 1 In C, Op. 21 - 1. Adagio Molto, Allegro Con Brio (crucial that the movements are numbered, to get them in the right order)
Artist-- Nikolaus Harnoncourt; Chamber Orchestra Of Europe
Composer-- Beethoven (I also put Bach for JS and only put the initials for the other Bachs)
Album-- Beethoven: Symphony 1 In C, Op. 21
*Is there a better way to do this?*
Wouldn't be surprised. But you don't expect Apple software to be so bad that simple users like me have to work out a logic to make things work on both Mac and iPod.

    ed2345 wrote:
What, for example will you do with an albmum of Maria Callas singing arias from many composers?
I have indeed got an album of Maria Callas and I put each song under the composer. (I can after all select Callas under Artist and get all her songs that way.)
    ed2345 wrote:
As a workaround for the iPod, I suggest to manually add the composer in to the Artist field (since the Composer field does not show on the iPod).
As I said, I tried that and, apart from finding it a messy fix, it means changing EVERY entry, whereas sometimes I get a semi decent one from the CD or the database. (Actually the Composer field does show on the iPod - the problem is that I scroll for ages to get through Bach.)
I'm pretty certain I sent feedback a couple of years ago, but see absolutely no signs of development of the metadata behind iTunes or the iPod. Sad. I'm an Apple user going back 20 years.

  • Help me put my music in Albums????????

Having just spent ages ripping all the music from my CDs into iTunes I can only view all my tracks in one long list in the Library. I can't get it to group music by Album or Artist at all.
I've been through all the menus and looked to find any box I've forgotten to tick but I just can't work it out.
I've never had any trouble with SonicStage or Windows MediaPlayer. Surely I don't have to individually create playlists and drag all the tracks into them??????
    Any advice gratefully received!
    K.

iTunes doesn't do grouping in tree form like windows and sonic. theres 2 ways to do this you can creat a smart playlist that will add the artist and album or in the top right corner where it says search, just start to type out the first part of the artist name or album and the lisat will only show those u want to see.

  • ITunes makes a new playlist every time music is added.

Hi. I am running lion. Latest version of itunes. On a mcbook pro.
Everytime i add music,w heather i drag and drop or import it makes a playlist on the side for each and every artist.
I have a gigantic library and i don't wan to have to go to at the end and delete like 200+ tabs.. I am really frustrated. Because i also have some misc files
i would like to add into one playlist. I don't want to mix the misc files with my actual library, and i was hoping to make one playlist for those misc. files and
another for my other things.. I was hoping someone could help me. That would be super great. I have already looked through preferences and i could not find anything. I am pretty tech savy, but am confused on this right now. It could just be a glith or something. THANKS

Your folders are probably littered with mu3 files. Previously iTunes would ignore such files when importing a folder, though they could be imported on demand. Now they are being imported too. A previous build failed to add the files so they all imported as empty lists, though if you have the current build they should be populated. Rather than importing the whole folder use something like Music Folder Files Not Added from Doug's Scripts.
    OR...
I've just missed the fact that you are describing the column browser which can list Artists, Albums, Genres etc. This is a useful feature for browsing the content of your library, but you don't have to have it displayed if you don't want it. View > Column Browser > Hide Column Browser... (at least on a PC)
If you add media to your library then it is added to one of the content groups, Music, Movies, TV Shows etc. You can't have it only appear in a user playlist.

  • I have music files by the same artist but they are listed in itunes in more than one album hod can i add then to just one album pf that artist

I have music files by the same artist but they are listed in Itunes in more than one album hod can i add then to just one album of that artist I am using windows 8.1 .

iTunes will group songs into an album when:
All songs have the same value for the Album and Artist field, or
All songs have the same value for the Album and Album Artist field
All songs have the same value for the Albumfield and the Part of a Compilation flag is checked.
If you want to group all the songs by one artist into a single "album" you can do so by following one of these rules.  However, it may be more useful to create Playlists to group music like this and retain the original release information.  One Smart Playlist for each artist you're interested in would meet this need without over-writing information about the source albums.

  • How do i sync music from iMac to iPhone 5s

How do I pull / sync music from my IMac to the Iphone 5s?

No. I loaded a CD to iTunes and when I connected my iPhone and select "Music" to sync, it loaded the music but my ringtones of which I loaded several months ago were gone. I thought that if you synced your device and only selected one group, "music" that would be all it would bother with. I guess I was wrong.

  • FOR **** SAKE! It can't be this hard can it ?

OK - admittedly I'm coming from the most intuitive music player (Creative) where you fill a folder with music on the PC, plug in the player, drag the folder across, then get the player to play the folder - no fancy software required, no playlists, no categorisation, just play that folder please.
So I thought - creme de la creme, Nokia 95 8G, does everything doesn't it? Smartest phone on the market isn't it? I can toss the old player away.
Bah. What a load of old toss.
Why does the Nokia system have to be so complicated ?
Firstly - why do I have to create a new file type - "Playlists.m3u" - why can't the damn thing take a folder full of music and play it ? If I try dragging across several folders of tunes onto the device it a) doesn't recognise the folder structure and just shows a long list of music files and b) doesn't automatically recognise the new tracks and requires a "refresh". I thought these were supposed to be "Smart" phones - so with all that computing power, how come it can't do something this simple ?
Synching with Windows MP is an effing joke. First there are the dreaded playlists, then there is the absence of being able to tell the thing to just send stuff to the N95 and it insists on doing a 2-way synch so I have to sit there while it tries to synch content back to the PC - most peculiar, all other synching programmes normally allow you to choose one- or two-way synching. S'Ok - I know this isn't your problem, just thought I'd let you know not to suggest that I use this inutile offal.
And so we come to the Music function on PC Suite. Well first I had to get rid of the **bleep**py N Series Suite because bizarrely it didn't have the PDA functions of calendar and contacts that the "normal" suite version 7 promises.
Then the old problem of the Nokia Music Manager not recognising the folder structure as a way of categorising music grouping (even rubbish old WMP 11 will do this!). So we're going to have to go back the the extra step of creating effing pointless playlists. Finally I work out how to see the folder structure by showing pathname and sorting on that - phew, one housepoint to the development team. then I select my chosen files, drag to "N95 8G" and while they're there automatically create a playlist. Wow. This is getting easier - am I done? Oh. No. Hang on - this doesn't actually appear to be the phone, just a holding directory called "N95 8G" on the suite - presumably I press a button to synch it into the phone ? No - the only button wants to send it to "My Collection" (for the life of me I haven't worked out what this is for - I thought my collection was the several hundred thousand carefully arranged tunes on my laptop ? what the hell is this for then). Re-selecting these files under My Collection ungreys an option under "File" to send to phone - my God ! am I finally here! something's happening! Icons are flashing, timer are counting down. Oh. There's nothing on the phone. Ah yes, I was forgetting - dumb phone - I have to "refresh". Still nothing. **bleep**. Didn't work. **bleep** software, **bleep** phone.
Just to recap the TEN (ultimately useless) steps: 1) Open Nokia Music Manager; 2) find the correct folder structure; 3) select songs; 4) copy to "N95" folder in Music Manager; 5) create playlist (note - effectively recreating the existing folder structure); 6) select all; 7) copy to "My Collection" folder in Music Manager; 8) select all; 9) under "File" menu select "copy to 'phone"; 10) refresh 'phone.
Come on Nokia and pull your **bleep** finger out. Away with your fancy graphics and synching options and BPM calculations and your "ooh, let me choose the perfect song for you to exercise by" drivel. Let me simply listen to my tunes in a simple way that doesn't require me to re-organise my collection. I want a cheese sandwich on white bread. I don't want or need Roquefort with grapes and pickled mice on multigrain focaccia.
Let me simply, in three easy steps:
    a) create a folder on my PC with my file manager with my selection of music in.
    b) using my file manager, let me drag that folder to my N95 under "Music".
    c) let my N95 recognise that folder structure and play the songs inside a particular folder.
Please. Please. Before the whole lot gets slung out of the **bleep** window. Please. Look - you don't even need ot get involved in the first two steps! You don't need to rewrite any of that **bleep**py Music Manager software or update your stultifyingly useless help files - all you need to do is to include an extra category in the next firmware upgrade of the Music Player that recognises folders, as well as artists, genres, playlists etc.
Make this dumb phone smart !

    Ummm, no. Frayed knot.
That's exactly what I want to do. Exactly.
I can easily and quickly drag several folders of music onto the phone. No problem. Part one of mission completed. Bypasses Music Manager, WMP, synching - the lot. Hip hip hooray.
The problem comes after a refresh. The phone shows all the individual tracks that it's found but doesn't respect the way in which I have chosen to group them in folders. It offers me the option to play by artist, by album, by genre, by playlist etc. It does not give me the simple option to play an individual folder-full of tracks.
The music player firmware doesn't seem to recognise this as a valid way of "grouping" music, presumably because it isn't buried as an attribute of the track or recognisable as a playlist instruction.
Perhaps I've been spoiled by the simplicity of the Creative system where even the most basic players work on this uncomplicated basis. Oh how I laughed at those Apple iDiots.
If anyone has a simple workaround for this - most appreciated.
Perhaps there's a "less intelligent" stripped down music player out there that works with folders that I can download to the N95 ?
Aunty remains curiously estranged from Robert.

  • Data recovery planning for DRM protected musi

    Hi folks,
I'm curious to hear from you on this topic: <FONT color=#cc0000>how do you protect your DRM-protected music (with download license, <EM>not subscription</EM>) - and I mean: data backup and recovery.
Let me put it this way: I'm interested in buying music online, as opposed to buying CDs as I did until now. But I'm real concerned about the implications of the DRM.
If I see how much trouble it costs to do proper data recovery planning (i.e. a backup plan and execution) for my home pc, and how much data tends to get lost when transitioning to new PC or OS, and how quickly internet economy can shift to new hypes and solutions, I'm simply afraid that all these DRM restrictions will mean that in 5 years from now, I will not be able to use the music I buy today.
Reason can be : data loss, format changes, companies out of business, changing to OS (Linux, ...) that doesn't have the DRM appropriate software, etc, etc...
So, for instance, do you convert all your DRM music to DRM-free formats? Or how do you answer the above question for yourself?
I emphasize that I'm talking about personal and legal backups here, and no more than that.
    thanks for sharing!
    Fred

And I have a problem with album sorting - they're not being properly sorted by their titles.
As you can see it from above, I'm grouping music by genres and inside one genre (in this case, piano sonata), I want to sort them with their titles.
I chose the option which says it sorts by title, but as you can see it's not working properly.
         Chopin (C) - Schumann (S) - Liszt (L) - Barber (B)...
Actually most of albums are sorted correctly, but only some of the albums seem to be put on the wrong places.
Is this problem known and is there way to fix this?
It's not a critical problem but it's quite annoying for me...
If there's a way please let me know.
    Thank you!

    HJ Lee,
For one of the  problem tracks, right-click, Get Info and look at the Sorting tab.  There may be information there that is overriding the main tags.
If so, you can edit it in that tab.
