Grouping objects by drawing round them

I am using the latest Pages (5.1) and I do a lot of grouping of graphics objects. However, the only way I know to do it is to select every object individually (holding the command key). Is there any way to draw round part of the screen to define an area and automatically select all objects in that area ?

My flash objects have boxes round them!

Hello - if anyone could help me with something, I'd be
eternally grateful!
I'm building a website with Dreamweaver, and it's got several
flash elements, like buttons and pictures.
When I preview the site on my BT browser, everything looks
great - but when I preview it on my IE browser, it's a mess.
When I hover over a flash element, a box of dotted lines
appears around the flash object, and the words "click to activate
and use the control" appear.
When I then click on the object, the box disappears, and I
can then use the buttons etc.
My dreamweaver site is made with tables. The dotted-line box
surrounds the CELL that the flash object is in, rather than the
flash object itself.
I've no idea what this is, or why it only happens in my IE
browser and not my BT one. If anyone can give me some pointers, I'd
be very grateful. At this rate, I'm going to be at my PC all
Christmas Day!

CP5 - W7 - Nested/Grouped objects - Not possible

Hi dear community,
I use Photoshop, Premiere, after effects, and many other adobe produts...
All of them have something in common, you can group or nest objects, vector based or pixel based media does not matter.
In Premiere, yoy can group a film a title and some effects into a cilp, and then use that clip as a object.
In Photoshop you can create folders under layers and use those to manage several objects at once.
But what about captivate? Even the "not to be mensioned here PowerPoint" can group objects.
Why is it so that within a company one does not reuse smart ideas and maby code?
Do not get me wrong, I love all the posibilities with captivate, but explode sometimes on the small unessesary to forget to develop things.
And to you who want to tell me about SHIFT, that is not what I am talking about

Using grouped objects as drag and drop source

I am creating a drag and drop interaction. I have an image grouped with a text area and would like to make them draggable together as a single drag source.
However, even though they are already grouped, when I edit the drag and drop interaction, they can only be specified as separate sources.
Is it possible to use grouped objects as a single source? How?

Have tons of workarounds, but none for this. It is simply not possible to indicate a group as a drag object, you have to put everything in one object. Maybe if you explain what is in the group?

Transform group objects

Hello Illustrators.
I've came across a thought, how to transform a grouped object. like in Photoshop when we use the distort transformation, we can manipulate the corner points
for a particular occasion. Here in the example I have 3 rectangles one smaller than another, and I I have grouped them. Now I'm trying to figure out a way how to adjust
the shape into the grey one. I have used the free distort tool, but does no justice. because there is no preview so I cannot see how it adjusts. I'm only after the equivalent of the distorition
like in Photoshop.

The root problem--as I've been pointing out here ever since Illustrator acquired envelopes--is that Illustrator envelopes insist on being created with their curve handles auto-extended. FreeHand, by comparison, provides you a choice of whether a rectangular envelope has its handles initially extended or retracted. So such a thing in FreeHand is as no-brainer simple as applying a rectangular envelope and then dragging its four corners to where you want them (just as in Photoshop).
To do that in Illustrator, you have to tediously set up guides so as to try to replicate the proportional positions of the envelope's extended handles on each side, after moving the corner points.
Using Envelope>Make With Top Object only works sometimes, because that feature does not provide any means by which to instruct the program which corner of the artwork is supposed to map to which corner of the already-drawn envelope shape. Instead, it just makes its own "guess" according to the ever-tyrannical horizontal/vertical axes of the page.

Placing a Grouped Object in Library

Is there a way to place a grouped object in the Library? For example, I have a smart object (0% opacity with 0 border) placed over a custom button grouped together. This grouped item will not always be placed in the same location, so it's not like I can just place them on a template slide. I realize I could just copy and paste from another page, but for a cleaner solution, I would like to just be able to pull it right from the asset library. Is this possible? I am using Cp7.

No Kevin, that is not possible. But why do you use a smart shape over a button? You can use a shape as a button? But of course, too bad that a shape will never be in the library (as is the case for buttons). You can copy/paste within the same project, or create a template to have them available for future projects.

Error: Accessing grouped objects in tab control

I have encountered an error where I cannot use/select objects within a tab control because they are grouped together.
If I copy/paste the tab control it shows them grouped and I can select them but as it stands in my program I cannot select the objects.
I would just copy/paste and work with that but I have property nodes and additional code for each of the 20 objects and would rather not have to go back and relink each property node and wire the new controls within the BD.
I am looking for a way of accessing the objects without having to copy+paste/recode anything.
Please note that there is a recent post about this tab control grouping error but is geared more towards adding an error notifier to LabView rather than how to fix the error.

The objects were grouped using the reorder menu on the front panel and then placed on a tab control.
The issue was that when I tried clicking on any of the grouped objects within the tab control on the front panel, nothing would happen.
If I double clicked, I would select the tab control on the BD.
I got rid of the bug by selecting everything on my BD and copying it into a new, blank VI.
Once I did that, I was able to access the objects that were grouped on the tab control.
Sorry for the late reply-- once I got it working I was only focused on finishing my task.

Feature restore request. (allow locked and grouped objects to be able to tagged.

In CS2, using the direct selection tool, I'm able to select and tag the image even if it's grouped and locked, no script needed at all, no sweat and fast!
Furthermore this XML element can also be moved freely in the structure hierarchy after tagged and remains grouped and locked.
In CS3 and CS4,
I can't do that.
It will give a warning message "Cannot modify elements that contain locked content, or are contained by locked content. Please unlock or check out the content and try again."
So need to write script to unlock the image's parent first, and then tag and locked the object back automatically.
(This script is essential so as to prevent any unintentional and accidental change on the page layout if it's done manually)
But to make matter worse, grouped objects will need to also find out all these ancestors and have them unlocked first!
It creates alot of hassle! Really being user-unfriendly in CS3/CS4 when doing such a simple xml tagging task.
PLEASE please restore the wonderful CS2 feature back in the next version of Indesign.

I'd suggest you submit your suggestion through the iTunes application feedback page. It's more likely to be seen by the iTunes development group that way.

Importing grouped objects

Is there a way to paste grouped objects into Keynote and keep them separate. When I try and paste part of an Illustrator file, or a set of objects from Powerpoint, it pastes them into Keynote, but lumps them together as one image and there is no way to ungroup them. Any thoughts?

Welcome to the discussions, cascas.
When you're copying from Illustrator, those items become merged together during the copy as a .pdf. After that, you can no longer edit them as separate shapes. However, if you can export those to .svg, there's a tool called svg2key that you can use to convert them to native Keynote objects. Then you'll be able to group, ungroup, change the stroke and fill, etc.

Object wrapping of grouped objects

When I group a bunch of objects (say some images and some text) and then set "object causes wrap" to "wrap text only above and below the object", the rule is applied individually to all the items in the group - meaning they can no longer be next to each other. My feeling is that the rule should be applied to the group as a whole and only cause wrapping in things around the group.
Is there another way to achieve this behaviour that I've missed? Or do people think this is a bug?

In the upper part, two pictures are grouped. The text wrap around the "sum" of the two rectangles.
In the lower part, the two pictures ares grouped with a rectangle enclosing both of them. The text wrap around it.
I assumed that it is what you where asking for.
Now, I know that the app is designed to work as it does in the top part : wrap around the "sum" of the grouped objects, not around the enclosing rectangle.
If we want to wrap around the enclosing rectangle, it's our duty to add the white rectangle.

Changing Line Thickness on Grouped Objects?

So I'm changing my style of animation from hand-drawn art to the usage of things such as the line and pen tool, in Adobe Flash CS3. I am drawing characters that have segmented parts, I.E. the arms, legs, head. body, ect are all separate grouped objects with a set line thickness. The problem is that when I try to shrink or grow the character, the lines making up their body is either too thick or too thin, depending on whether I make him bigger or smaller. It seems that I am unable to change the line thickness of grouped objects, or dare I say it, a group of grouped objects. The properties panel greys out when I select an object, so I have no access to it at all. I dont want to have to go and change the line thickness individually on each object, whose lines are all the same thickness to begin with.
Is there any trick or plugin I can use to change this, so the line thickness of grouped objects can be changed? Or am I just ignorant with the answer just staring me in the face? Either way, I would REALLY appreciate the help any of you could provide!

Okay, so I seem to have found an even better solution to my problem than what I was hoping for. I can just convert the lines into fill by going to Modify > Shapes > Convert Lines to Fill. This makes it so the lines will now change in relative size depending on how much I shrink or grow an object.

Rename Layer, Group, Object Javascript

I'm trying to write a script that renames a layer, and group within the layer, then an object within the layer (but not a part of the group) and have it run in a loop.
Here's what I've got so far, the group rename doesn't work.

Found out that I was really close, and some interesting facts about how thorough illustrator will be when renaming groups across the board. Basically the files I'm working with have a layer that requires a specific name and number, and group within that layer and an object outside of that group but still in the same layer. Within the group is a compound path made up of several objects, I noticed that the when I started getting the group rename working it was skipping multiple numbers because it was going inside the compound path, find groups within the compound path and renaming them as well. So as long as I make sure there are no groups hidden within the groups I wanted to rename the script works like a charm.
Anyway this is what that script looks like I'm still working on getting the up-grouped object renamed. I notice this discussion has gotten a few views since I went to lunch. I'll post the final version at the end of the day if I have time.
If anyone has any suggestions or constructive advice I'd be very open to hear it.

Concatenate a string with the results of group-object

I wrote a script to get the 10 most recent entries in the Windows application log. It works fine, but I would prefer to format the output differently.The output looks like this:server1\

Error while creating MV replication group object

I am getting error while creating replication group object. I tried to create using OEM and SQLPlus

I think I know what may have happened.
As I can see you are trying to create support for an updateable materialized view.
You have to make sure the name of the schema that owns the materialized view is the same as the schema owner of the master table (at master site).
From the code you have shown, I bet the owner of table EMP is SCOTT.
From the other hand, you want to create materialized view EMP_MV under schema KARTHIK that refers to table SCOTT.EMP at master site.
According to the documentation, the schema name used in DBMS_REPCAT.CREATE_MVIEW_REPOBJECT must be same as the schema that owns the master table.

I tried to reproduce your example in my environment, and I got exactly the same error which actually confirms my assumption that the reason for the error is the fact that you tried to create the materialized view in a schema with different name than the one where master table exists.
I'll skip some of the steps that I used to create the replication environment.

I don't think that you can. Yahoo's basic email features do not include mail forwarding.
