Grouping of songs under an album

I am using itunes 10.5 with windows 7 64 bit.  Some of my songs are not together with the album they were ripped from.  It will have them in a separate box than the rest of the album.  How do i fix this?

Generally all you need to do is fill in an appropriate Album Artist. For more details see my article on Grouping Tracks Into Albums, in particular the topic One album, too many covers.

  • Consolidating songs under one Album Cover

When importing a CD Album into iTunes, iTunes will create several album covers then spread different songs under each cover. How do I consolidate these spread-out song under on album cover? Currently I have an album, under library, that show 5 album covers with 2-3 songs under each album cover. I am new to using an iPod so any help is appreciated.

  • Grouping single songs under one artist

    Hi,
I've been busting my brain; how do you group single songs to appear all under ONE artist? Is there a way to do this without changing the artist field? Has it something to do with compilations/sorting category?
Note, this is for playback on the iPhone but hope this is the right category as you have to do this in iTunes!
    Thanks

    So say you have these random songs;
    Yesterday by the Beatles
    Hey Jude by the Beatles
    Hotel California by the Eagles
    Respect Aretha Franklin
On my iPhone, they each appear under the artist name (Beatles/Eagles/Aretha)
There still doesn't seem to be a way to plan all these songs from the ARTISTS menu by selecting say, 'various artist' or miscellaneous.
The only way i can think is rename every artist field to 'various artists' but you loose the artist name this way.

Nope, the artists menu is just that, a list of artists. If we had an *Album Artists* menu then you could find such collections under say "Various Artists" if you grouped them together with an Album name. Even though we don't get an *Album Artist menu* if you do go to the trouble of creating an album name for this collection then you can just choose it from the Album menu. If you happen to be browsing the artists and notice the Beatles entry you can drill down into it, then the album for this collection then having selected a track, turn your iPhone into landscape mode and reselect the album so that all tracks play. Otherwise playlists may be a better bet, and at least you can then leave these tracks with their original album art and other details.

  • How do I combine a group of songs into an album?

I downloaded a group of songs from a single artist into my iTunes on my PC and created a playlist, but when I sync with my iPod, they sinc as single songs. How do I group them so that they are in a single folder and sync'd that way?

Generally, in iTunes, all you need to do is fill in an appropriate Album Artist to keep things together. For older iPods each track from the same album should have the same artist, or be marked as a compilation where appropriate. On iOS devices you may need to go to Settings > Music > Group By Album Artist > On. For more details see my article on Grouping Tracks Into Albums, in particular the topic One album, too many covers.

  • How do I group songs under one album, please?

    OK, so I
iTunes works better than Windows media player for my set up with Windows 7 Ultimate .... BUT it 'took over' the Media Player library and put some tracks as separate entries - so, for example, I have one album of Rod Stewart in 6 different places, with tracks from the same album. I have tried everything I can think of, even deleting the whole album and starting again - frustratingly, same result. Can anyone help, please?

Generally all you need to do is fill in appropriate Album and Album Artist fields. For more details see my article on Grouping Tracks Into Albums, in particular the topic One album, too many covers and, if necessary, the two following sections.

  • How to combine munltiple album songs under one ablum?

I have looked all around the iTunes Help section and just can't seem where to find out how to combine album songs under one album in the cover flow view. I know it's confusing so here is a picture of what I mean. The circled part is what I want to be under one picture.

You're on the right track. iTunes 8 is changed - you need to go to the Options tab to see the Compilation box.
Why Apple can't get their version control in check so that matching help & tech support articles are released the same day as new software, I'll never understand. It presents a very poor quality image.

  • Combining songs into one album

I previously imported music from my Music CD Soundtrack: Forrest Gump (has multiple disks) while I was on a Windows platform (not sure if that will matter considering my issue, but wanted to give that info.)
Now, I've imported all my music on to my recently purchased MacBook. I had the same issue on my Windows iTunes, but never resolved it.
I have, let's say 20 songs I selected from the soundtrack, but, they have placed them in different albums. Consequently, only a few have found the artwork to go with the album. I tried switching the album name to the same album name that had artwork. I tried dragging those songs to the album with artwork.
Still, I cannot combine all the songs under one album. If I wanted to play all the songs from my Forrest Gump soundtrack, I'd have to go to about 10 different albums, and, as I said before, I could not get artwork for a majority of the songs.
What do I need to do to combine these songs all under one album (FYI: for some reason the two artworks I did get downloaded, were actually two different covers, one correct and one that was still a Forrest Gump cover, but a different one than I had on my original CD).

If this is a compilation album where you have many artists on one album then you probably need to toggle the compilation checkbox at the bottom of the Get Info window for the tracks on the album. Highlight all the tracks, Get Info, then check the compilation box says yes.

  • Group Different Albums by the Same Artist under one Album Cover

I've read many posts regarding grouping tracks by different artists into one album, but none dealing with grouping tracks by one artist together from different album titles. An example of this would be classical pieces that are divided into different acts, or more recently, the new Green Day album "21st Century Breakdown," which also divides the album into "acts." Another example of this situation could be a box set by a particular artist, for instance an Eagles box set that contains 3 discs of differing titles (disc one: Eagles, disc two: Desperado, disc three: Live) in which case the three CDs are all essentially part of the same album.
I know the grouping field can be utilized to tag all the CDs within the same set to keep them together; however, I have not been able to use this feature to group albums such as those mentioned above together under one album art in the grid or in the coverflow view. It looks rather silly when there are 3 or 4 of the same album cover in a row in the grid or the coverflow.
The best way I could think to differentiate the different acts on an album or CDs in a set was to group the songs in their own folder and change the title of the album tag to reflect which act (or CD) those particular tracks covered. While this works in the list view to keep the tracks in order, it does not allow me to view the album as a “whole” using the coverflow view. It seems the only way to merge differently tagged tracks is if the ALBUM title is the same even if there are multiple artists. I’ve tried using the grouping, sorting, and “part of a compilation” options with no success. Is there any way to merge these tracks under one album art while retaining the different album names?

Adding slightly to the previous post I would suggest that you give each disc of the set an appropriate disc no., e.g. Discs 1 of 3, 2 of 3 and 3 of 3 for Eagles, Desperado & Live respectively in your Eagles Box Set. Record the individual disc titles in the Comments or Grouping field, then change the Album title for all three discs to something appropriate like "Eagles Box Set". The three discs will collapse into one cover and play in sequence. If marking the transition from one disc to another matters you could, for example, simply add the album name in brackets to the first track of each album. You could use curly brackets to distinguish this from other types of track comment. For more organizational tips see my previous post on Grouping Tracks Into Albums, in particular the topic One cover for multi-disc album.
The alternative approach for box sets which simply repackage a number of original albums together is to find the original artwork for each album.

  • How do i stop each song getting up under seperate album covers?

hello, I want to load all my mp3s (about 500) onto my itunes, but everytime i do this, each song comes up under individual album covers, how can I put all the songs under just one album cover or no album at all? i dont want to have 500 different albums i have to scroll through everyday! thanks!

    *HowTo: Grouping Tracks Into Albums*
Excuse the long post, but hopefully covering all the bases (that I can think of) will help you fix the other issues you are likely to run into as you try to organise your iTunes library.
    *Use an album friendly view*
iTunes will let you sort music on many columns, some of which are unlikely to group albums together or put the tracks in their normal order. The most useful order for editing the library is probably *Album by Artist*. If you're not already there, select the list view and click on the column heading for Artist until it reads Album by Artist.
    *One cover, too many tracks*
The iPod (and iTunes to a lesser extent) conflates two or more albums with the same title, most obviously with *Greatest Hits*. On the iPod this can result in one album acting as a combination of two or more. Selecting any cover gives all the tracks of all albums with the same title. The workaround for this "Greatest Hits" bug is to give each album a unique title - I tend to go for *Album - Album Artist* as this reads clearly in the iTunes browser. Alternatively you could use the wording as it appears on the cover or append different numbers of spaces for each different album. Somewhat oddly, setting different values for Sort Album doesn't work.
*Missing artist or album not with others by same artist*
iTunes relies on the Gracenote CDDB database when identifying CD's. This often marks collections or anthologies of an artist's work as a compilation. In iTunes, however, the compilation flag has the logical function of grouping together tracks with the same album name, but different artists on each track, e.g. "Now That's What I Call Metal 666!". These compilations are then all grouped together at the end of cover flow. Most of us however, would expect "Greatest Hits" albums to be listed with the other albums by the same album artist. For albums which are essentially by a single album artist or group it is best to set the appropriate value for the album artist and clear the compilation flag.
    *One album, too many covers*
For true compilations, where each track is by a different artist, the answer is to set the compilation flag to true and enable the iTunes preference to *Group compilations when browsing*. If the album is not a compilation however, any tracks which list guest artists may be treated as separate items. Filling in the Album Artist field is enough to link things in iTunes. Sadly, however, the iPod ignores the Album Artist field when grouping albums so this is only a partial solution. You can simply mark the entire album as a compilation which seems to be the way iTMS handles it, however that's not an ideal fix. Short of waiting for Apple to address this issue (and as far as I can tell it goes back to the 1st gen. of iPods) we need a workaround. What I do is to put any additional artist info. in square brackets after the song name. E.g. *Track \[Feat. Guest\]* and then set *Artist=Album Artist* for each track. For anthologies where the Album Artist is credited as part of another group, e.g. for Cream tracks on an Eric Clapton anthology, I use *Track \[As Group\]*. For a track where the main Album Artist doesn't receive a credit, e.g. the first track of the Slim Shady LP credited to Jeff Bass, I just set the track name to *Track \[Guest\]* while still setting the artist to the album artist. N.b. I use square brackets to indicate that this is information about the track as distinct from the song title and also use this style for Mix/Live/Bonus info.
*One album, still too many covers*
iTunes may split albums into two or more sections if some tracks from the album have different values for Artist, Album Artist, Album, No. of Discs or Part of a Compilation. Tiny differences such as trailing spaces, accented characters or variants of symbols can sometimes be quite hard to spot. The iPod is also more sensitive to case variations and may split or reorder an album that looks okay in iTunes. Normally overtyping the desired value for each shared field will complete the grouping of the album into one entity. Occasionally, however, this method seems to fail. When this happens I've found that you can force every field to update properly by adding some extra text - e.g. a trailing X, which once applied seems to complete the joining of the tracks into one album. Once this has happened the extra data can be removed and the album should remain properly grouped.
*Tried that, there are STILL too many covers!*
The Sort Artist, Sort Album & Sort Album Artist fields can be used to override the normal sort order. For example iTunes automatically drops leading articles (a/an/the) so "The Beatles" are arranged under "B" instead of "T". Occasionally different tracks from the same album can have different values in these sort fields which can also break up the grouping. Making the sort columns visible in iTunes can help with spotting & correcting such problems.
    *One cover for multi-disc album*
Multi-disc albums are often listed as *Album (CD1)* for CD 1, *Album (CD2)* for CD 2 etc. To display these properly using just one cover, each disc should have the correct *Disc X of Y* values set, and then the entire album should be given the single title Album. Being somewhat obsessive I also renumber the tracks sequentially, working backwards from the last track (so that no two tracks ever have the same number) until I reach disc 1. BTW You can still give the individual discs different artwork should it be relevant so that the correct artwork will be displayed as the album progresses.
    *One artist, many names*
With some artists, particularly classical composers, you should be aware of alternative representations of their names. E.g. 2Pac vs. Tupac. The menus will work best if for each artist you standardise on just one form of their name. E.g. make a choice between Mozart, W.A. Mozart or Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and then apply it consistently. For classical music I tend also to use the Composer as the Artist & Album Artist and either discard the performer details or place these into the Comments field.

  • Multiple Music Videos Grouped Together Under "Unkown Album"

I recently upgraded to iTunes 8.0.1 (this bug might have existed in 8.0.0 but I only noticed it now).
Some of the music videos I have purchased off the iTunes Store are now grouped together under Unknown Album. This only happened for some of the videos I have purchased. There is nothing written under the albums line when I click get info. It only says Unknown Album in grid view, but they are under the same album artwork in Cover Flow.
Here is a screen shot of how it looks in grid view. The "album" with multiple videos is on the left, next to two music videos displayed properly:
Here is what it looks like in cover flow:
The next two are the setting under get info.
Thank You To Anyone Who Can Help!

It isn't a perfect world. Make something up that is meaningful to you to help keep things neat if that is what you are looking for.
I let iTunes do the work and have the 'keep' and 'copy' features enabled in iTunes prefs>Advanced. To keep my stuff simple I have created my own compilation albums and label them as compilations. 80's, 90's etc. as there are to many one-hit-wonders to let them loose all over the place. So by creating compilations I keep things together.
You could apply the same idea to the videos. Call the Album 'My Music Video's' and label them all with that and select the compilation option and they will all be in one place.
